从南北战争结束到第一次世界大战,美国文学总的倾向是现实主义的兴起、发展和浪漫主义的衰微。

南北战争结束后的20、30年内,资本主义处于自由竞争阶段,民主、自由的理想鼓舞着人民和作家,文学创作中乐观的情绪处于主导地位。

80年代以后,经过几次经济危机,社会动荡不安,人们怀疑民主制度是“人人自由、幸福的天堂”。

80、90年代以后,批判现实、揭露社会黑暗的作品增多,主题涉及农村的破产,城市下层人民的困苦,劳资斗争,不少作品揭露种族歧视、海外侵略和政府与大企业的勾结,也有些作品表现了空想社会主义的情绪。
