• Chinese Materia Medica was a record of traditional Chinese medicine. During Li’s study and practice, he found many mistakes in the old Chinese Materia Medica and the compiling way was confused. So he made up his mind to compile a complete, accurate and new Chinese Materia Medica..

Honorific
• Li is the great scientists of the 16th century, the Chinese people are proud to call him “Doctor of the holy.” (医中之圣) • We should learn from his kind of lifesaving,efforts to study, to develop lifelong dedication to the spirit of Chinese Medicine .
• (2)Li shizhen also produced 11 other books on medical subjects,of which only 3 have survived to the present. 《奇经八脉 考》《濒湖脉学》《五脏图论》 • his work on pulse diagnosis(Pinghu Maixue, 1564 A.D.) is most highly regarded.

In his practice of medicine, he found that the medical books through the ages contained many mistakes and were likely to harm people’s lives. He made up mind to write a new book about medicine. He made a further investigation in some mountain areas in China. He also collected herbal samples as well as folk prescriptions in different places such as in Anhui, Henan and Hebei provinces. Over a period of 27 years from 1552 to 1578, the Chinese medical history witnessed the compilation of Compendium of Materia Medica by Li Shizhen, a huge medical masterpiece with the richest contents of his time. The book has details about more than 1800 herbal medicines, including 1100 illustrations and 11000 prescriptions.
• Compendium of Materia Medica covered topics in biology, chemistry, geography, geology, history and so on. • The text lists all the animals, plants and other objects which were believed to contain medicinal properties.
• ③On the basis of the old Chinese Materia Medica, he corrected the mistakes, reorganized the classification, collected the samples, drew the pictures, added a large quantity of new contents and systemized the traditional Chinese medicine knowledge before the 16th century. • It took him nearly 30 years and finally ended in 1578 with the name Compendium of Materia Medica •

• Because of his diligence and intensive study, his medical skill improved rapidly. During his practice, he cured many disputed and difficult diseases and quickly established his fame. Later he was granted a post in the Imperial Hospital in the capital.
(3)Why did he become a doctor • In his youth, Li Shizhen suffered from frequent illnesses and this generated in him a personal interest in becoming a doctor • After his three failures in the imperial examination, he was determined not to pursue official ranks. He started to concentrate on medical study and medical practice.
• On the beginning of the 17th century, this work was introduced to Japan, and then to Korea and European countries and translated into many languages .It is not only a traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia, but also a book which categorized plants and minerals in detail in early times in the world. Therefore, it has tremendous influence in the world.
(2)His childhood
• He was born in a family of doctors. Both of his grandfather and father were local prominent (突出的) doctors. In his childhood, he liked to read various Chinese medicine books and often went out with his father and elder brothers to treat patients.

1.Life story
(1) his born • LiShizhen was a great medical and pharmaceutical(制药) expert. • He was born in the reign of Emperor Zhengde of the Ming Dynasty (1518) in Qichun, Hubei Province.

• It presented a huge number of diverse materials: 1,892 medicinal substances (1,094 from plants; 444 from animals, and 275 from mineral sources), including 374 new items.
Compendium of Materia Medica
• The text is written in almost 2 million Chinese characters, classified into 16 divisions and 60 orders. For every herb there are entries on names, detailed description of appearance and odor, nature, medical function, effects and side recipes etc.
Li Shizhen was born in Qizhou( now Qizhou county)of Hubei province in China. Both his father and his grandfather were doctors. When he was a child, Li Shizhen was very interested in the nature of various herbal medicines . He helped his father collect herbal medicines and look after the patients.
