Professor Xu Yuanchong makes dedicate efforts to translation of Tang poetry and creates most splendid treasure for translated literature. He puts forward the translation theory of “three beauties” which defines that translation should reproduce the sense beauty, sound beauty and form beauty of original poetry. He advocates to put “sense beauty” first, followed by “sound beauty” next and “form beauty” last, with the pursuit of harmonious integration of those three beauties.

Beauty in sense
A translated version which only conforms to sense beauty may not be a quality poetry translation but at least can be regarded as a prose translation; while one which conforms to sound and form beauty without giving the idea of original text can not be called as a quality poetry translation.

Tang poetry is one of the most brilliant artistic treasures in Chinese history and it has strict requirements for rules of rhyming, number of characters and lines. In Xu Yuanchong's version, apart from the artistic conception, he works to lay restrict rules on the version's rhyme and lines, making the utmost efforts to conform to the style of the original text.
