Unit 1
LAURA: Hey, Will. Are you coming or going?
其它的方法来表达同样的意思::/Are you leaving?/ or /Are you off now?
WILL: Oh, I'm on my way out. Just checking out this schedule.
check out : finding out about
LAURA: Did you find anything interesting?
WILL: Yeah, actually. I was looking at some courses that you're offering outside the gym. I'm getting tired of the routine and repetition here.
LAURA: Mmm, we've had several requests from members asking for something more exciting and challenging. Did you read about the scuba diving classes and the rock climbing?
Note the use of adjectives used to describe the nature of the sport.
WILL: I haven't come to that bit yet. What did you say? Rock climbing and...Cuba diving?
地道的表达方式:/reached that point/, /arrived at/
LAURA: Scuba diving! SCUBA stands for self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. Do you catch my drift? SCUBA: /acronym/
Do you catch my drift: 是/Do you understand?/ 的习语。
WILL: Is that when you take a boat out into the ocean, with all that gear on and dive to the bottom?
LAURA:Yep, you've got it! Um... masks, fins, wetsuit, regulator and a tank.
A list of clothing and equipment required for scuba diving.
WILL: It sounds really difficult and dangerous. Anyway, where can you do that near the gym?
Note the use of adjectives used to describe the nature of the sport.
LAURA: Oh, we use an aquarium close by. We do all the confined dives there. Then, when you feel more confident and ready, we take a special trip to the ocean or a lake. I'm sure you'll love it!
aquarium :water-filled glass for keeping and exhibiting fish
WILL: Agh, I'm not too sure about it. I was thinking about taking up rock climbing. I love the mountains.
take up : An idiomatic expression meaning /try/.
LAURA: Well when you've made a decision, sign up right over there.
sign up: register
WILL: Great. Thanks for your help.
Unit 2
NICK: Aelred... I need to talk to you about something.
AELRED: What's on your mind, Nick? Sit down.
something on someone's mind is something which is causing them concern
NICK: Well, it's about Bill and Kirsten. Kirsten and Bill are dating.
date: to regularly go out regularly to romantic appointments with someone
AELRED: Really? I didn't know. So, what's the problem?
NICK: Well, it's just unprofessional... I mean, when they meet in the hallway, they kiss each other...and she's always giggling.Giggle, giggle, giggle... I mean: You know, I think she's the problem.
unprofe ssional (adj)- not suitable for something to do with busine ss or office work.
to giggle(v)- to laugh in a silly manner
AELRED: And you say everyone knows about this?
NICK: Umm, yeah... it's a major topic of conversation at lunch time. Nobody respects her anymore. I think you should talk to her about it.
topic: something that people are talking about
AELRED: Well, I do have meetings scheduled with both of them tomorrow. It's the end of the year; it's time for the annual review.
annual review: a yearly asse ssment of how an employee is doing
NICK: OK. I hope you don't think I'm gossiping about it, but I am a little concerned.
gossip about: to talk about the private lives of other people behind their backs
AELRED: I'll take care of it. Thank you, Nick.
Unit 3
KRIST A: So, I know that the cost of li ving is much higher in Japan than it is here in the US, but I'd like to get a more specific idea, since my departure date is approaching.
HR MANAGER: Well, as a rule of thumb , you can expect to pay roughly twice what you pay here.
rule of thumb: 固定的短语指的是/guiding principle/ 。
KRIST A: Uh huh. Well, for example, how about housing?
HR MANAGER: It depends on where you want to live, and what kind of accommodations you're looking for, of course. Are you planning to live in downtown T okyo?
depend on :表使推断。
KRIST A: Yes, I've heard that it's most convenient, and that it's an easier cultural adjustment.
I’v heard: "I've been told..", "I understand.."
HR MANAGER: OK, for an apartment comparable to yours here in the States you would pay 40 to 50 percent more in T okyo. It would cost less in the suburbs and in rural areas, of course.
States: America, the U.S.A. or the US
KRIST A: I see. OK, how about food and entertainment?
HR MANAGER: Food's pricey: you can try to shop around for the best deals, but it's quite a bit more expensive, no matter how you shop. Rice and beer are particularly expensive, compared to the US.
best deal: 找出并买最便宜的物品。
KRIST A: OK, how about entertainment?
HR MANAGER: Well, here again, the relative cost is very high: it can range from double the cost of the US to . . . how much do you have? (Laughs)
KRIST A: Well, how about basic entertainment - I'm not talking about formal events or anything. How much does a movie cost?
HR MANAGER: A movie in a theater costs almost exactly twice the price as a movie in the US.
KRIST A: You're kidding! At this rate , I'm beginning to think it would be better to just stay home!
If this example is typical
Unit 4
KENN: Hey Corina, have you had lunch yet? We're going over to Quick Burger--do you wanna come?
/Hey/是另一种与hi 一样不正式的问候语。
/Wanna/是want to 较为口语化的说法。
CORINA: Quick Burger? Isn't that the new fast food burger chain?
By a sking “Quick Burger” Lorraine implies that she remembers the place.
KENN: Yeah, they have cheeseburgers, bacon burgers . . . any kind of burger you could want.
CORINA: Actually I'm waiting for an important phone call. Could you get me a veggie burger with lettuce and tomato? 当Lorraine表示她正在等待时,她说:“I’m waiting”。
KENN: Ok. How about you Laura?
“How about you”是“would you like to“的另一种说法。
LAURA: No, thanks. I brought my lunch today.
KENN: Alright. See you soon.
LAURA: I didn't know you were a vegetarian Corina.
CORINA: Really? I haven't eaten meat for two years. I try to eat a balanced diet.
LAURA: Yeah, me too. My doctor said I have to start eating better so I've started a new diet.
Carl说他现在的饮食计划比他过去的饮食计划更健康。
CORINA: I see. So what's your diet?
I see: 我懂了。
LAURA: Well, in the morning I usually have a cup of yogurt, some cereal and a piece of fruit.
usually 通常这表示,他习惯于吃酸奶,但不是经常吃。
CORINA: That's good. I'm usually too busy in the morning so I skip breakfast. What do you have for lunch?
LAURA: For lunch, I usually have a small salad and a bowl of soup.
CORINA: That's not very much . . . well, I'm impressed,Laura. How is the diet going(How often do you stick to this diet?) LAURA: It’s going pretty well (So far, I'm doing pretty good), and already I feel better. How about you? Isn't it hard being a vegetarian?
这种情况下,pretty表示一般来说,并不表示绝对的。
CORINA: Everyone thinks so, but it's not that difficult. In fact, my friend turned me on to the idea, and I realized that I never felt good after I ate meat.
Unit 5
JUANA: Juana: It is so hard to find the right apartment.
MIKE: Is this one too small?
JUANA: It seems cozy, but I am not sure if it is too small.
/cozy/ has a positive connotation while /cramped/ has a negative connotation.
MIKE: This kitchen seems a bit cramped and there is only a little storage space. It does have a nice stove, though. Is that important?
a bit: a little
JUANA: Yes, but I am more concerned about space. (This place has all the conveniences), our townhouse is so spacious.
MIKE: The living room here is half the size of the living room in our townhouse. But isn't our townhouse too expensive? Not literally half the size. Rather, much smaller.
JUANA: It is twice as expensive as this place. And twice as cold, too. Old homes have terrible heating. The bathroom here is also bigger, and it has a closet. Wouldn't it be nice to have a bathroom that has a closet?
This is not only a question, but also a sugge stion
MIKE: Yes, but what I dislike is that this apartments are rather . . .well, dull. Contemporary apartments seem like boxes, just like this place. Don't you agree?
JUANA: OK, this place is dull, but I want a modern apartment where everything works. Aren't you tired of fixing up things?
By emphasizing /is/, she is strongly agreeing to the question
fixing up means repairing
MIKE: It does seem that I am always fixing something. But I enjoy the feeling of space. Our apartment is so big, while everything in this apartment seems so cramped.
/feeling/ is sensation or idea of
JUANA: Do you want to just look at another apartment?
MIKE: We have looked at three so far, but this one isn't right. Would you mind looking at another apartments? JUANA: No, that would be fine.
Unit 6
STEPHANIE: So, how did the trip go?
JOHN: Not too well, I think. First of all, there was a ton of traffic, so I was a little late for the meeting. I hate that! I didn't feel like my presentation went as smoothly as usual, and to top it all off, it rained, so my suit got all wet.
a ton of: 许多,很多
to top it all off: 在任何其他事情之上
STEPHANIE: Well, I can't say I'm surprised, really.
JOHN: Oh, what do you mean?
STEPHANIE: Well, there are some things you might've done differently. I was afraid you hadn't prepared as much as usual.
JOHN: How do you mean? What would you have done differently?
STEPHANIE: I mean, I would've rehearsed the presentation out loud at least a couple of times, for starters. rehearse: 练习过了
starter: 首先,开始
JOHN: I would've done that, but I've made nearly the same presentation so many times I could practically give it in my sleep!
give it in my sleep: 不花吹灰之力的
STEPHANIE: Well, I still would've rehearsed: can't hurt. And I would've planned better for the trip itself too. I always check the weather forecast, and bring an umbrella if there's the slightest chance of rain.
weather forecast: 预计的天气情况
JOHN: Yeah, that makes sense.....not too clever, leaving without one.
STEPHANIE: And you'd better leave early any time you have an appointment. I would've gone very early and relaxed for a minute after I got there; you never know when something's going to come up, like traffic. Remember "the early bird catches the worm".
come up: 发生
JOHN: All right, I think I see what you mean: "haste makes waste", right?
haste: 催,加速
STEPHANIE: Exactly!
Exactly: 完全正确!
Unit 7
JOHANNA: Hey Katie, look at these boots I bought. Aren't they fabulous?
If something is fabulous, it is great or fantastic.
KATIE: Those are great. You must have paid a fortune for them, though.
We can also say, "You must have paid a lot for them."
JOHANNA: Not really, they were discounted 50 percent. The mall across the street is having a half-off sale on all of last year's designs.
These are two ways of saying the same thing.
KATIE: Maybe I should go. Is that where you usually shop?
What do you usually shop for? Clothe s, food, electronics...?
JOHANNA: Not usually, but I've been looking for boots like these for a while. They're all the rage right now. Where do you like to go?
This means they are very popular and fashionable.
KATIE: T o tell the truth, I haven't gone out clothes shopping for a while. So those boots are the "in thing" now? Are they real leather?
Fake leather is called pleather.
JOHANNA: 100 percent leather. Leather is really in fashion right now. It's amazing how fast trends change.
What are the trends in your country?
KATIE: I know what you mean; I feel like my entire wardrobe is totally out of date. Your clothes are pretty trendy - you always seem to have something new. What do you recommend? How can I change my image?
wardrobe: This is your collection of clothe s.
JOHANNA: Well, fur trim is hot right now. And everyone is wearing sunglasses... And scarves - you need to have a scarf.
fur trim: This is when the hair of an animal is on the edges of a piece of clothing.
KATIE: I go for a more traditional style, I think: simple and classic. That's what I like.
JOHANNA: I've tried that before, but "classic" was in about 2 years ago.
Classic means the same as traditional.
KATIE: So, the "traditional trend" has come and gone?
JOHANNA: Yeah, but don't worry, it might come back in style again soon. Do you have time to go window shopping at lunch? The sale is still going on. . .
window shopping: This is when you walk around and look at the window displays of shops.
KATIE: Absolutely. I could use a second opinion.
A second opinion is what someone else thinks.
Unit 8
ALEXIS: So, what would you like to do for exercise?
What do you do for exercise?
NICK: I was thinking of running. Do you like to run?
ALEXIS: I've never really been much of a jogger. It seems fun at first, when I start very slow... but I never seem to stick with it very long. I guess jogging's boring for me.
We can also say "I've never jogged a lot."
NICK: Boring? Really? It helps me clear my head. I live to get out and see the trees, get some fresh air.
/Clear my head/表示理清思路。
/fresh air/与/clean air /含义是一样的。
ALEXIS: How about walking? Do you like to walk?
NICK: Oh, that sounds like a good idea. I like walking too. It takes a bit longer than jogging, but it's nice too.
We can also say "Y eah, I'd like that."
ALEXIS: Yeah, for me stretching and walking at a good pace are better than, say, running, or doing aerobics or something.
at a good pace: 表示中速
NICK: Ah, so you don't like a fast pace?
/fast pace/表示快速
ALEXIS: Well, actually, it's not so much the pace as the impact. I like low-impact exercise.
What do you think is the difference between low and high impact?
NICK: What do you mean, low-impact?
ALEXIS: Oh, I mean, exercising by running or jumping is high-impact. It puts a lot of stress on your bones, your joints... especially your knees.
What other activities puts stre ss on your knees?
NICK: OK, so we'll start stretching and walking, and then if we feel like picking up the pace we can try that a bit later.
/pick up the pace/表示加速
ALEXIS: Sounds like a plan!
Alexis thinks it's a good idea。
