to be an honest man
Good moring, dear teachers! I’m glad to stand here to give a speech, and my topic is to be an honest man.
When I was a little girl, my mother told me not to tell a lie. She said if I did, I would lose everything like the child in the story called the wolf is coming. Now, let’s share a story from an English newspaper.
Alan, a woodcutter(伐木工), lived a hard life. One day when he was cutting wood near a river, his axe(斧) fell into the river. Alan had only one axe and did not know how to swim. He felt so sad and began to cry.
An old man heard and walked to him.“what ’s the matter, young man?”he asked.
“My axe is in the water. I can’t find it.”said Alan .
“Wait a minute,” said the old man. “I’ll help you.” Then he jumped into the river and brought up a gold axe.
“ Is this your axe?” he asked.
“No,”said Alan, “that isn’t my axe.”
Then the old man brought up a silver(银的) axe. Alan again said it wasn’t his axe.The third time the old man brought up the woodcutter’s axe.
Alan was very happy. “This is my axe.”
The old man was moved by the woodcutter’s honesty(诚实). He also gave the gold axe and the silver axe to him. I believe that we are all
glad to see such a perfect ending.
Being honest is important in our life. Because of honesty, our friends trust us; Because of honesty, our families get happier; Because of honesty, our city will be more comfortable to live.
My English teacher also gave me a lesson. One day last year, I went to her office to take the radio. I was so careless that I broke a snow globe on the table. Oh, my god! It was her favorite one. What should I do? Luckily, there was nobody in the office at that time. So I got back to classroom right away.
While I was having classes, I was very upset. Finally, I decided to tell my teacher the truth. “I’m really sorry! Miss Wang. I broke your snow globe.”To my surprise, she wasn’t mad at me. She thought honesty is more important than a snow globe, and she just asked me to be more careful.
The great poet Shakespeare ever said, “ No legacy is so rich as honesty .” Time is changing, but honesty won’t be out of style.
