Be a Professional Reader
——My interpretation of the new English
curriculum standards
Andy Joy
I. Aims of this activitie.
1. Leading teachers to read the curriculum standard.
This term our school invested a lot of money to by the curriculum standards. If noone to read it that’s a huge waste. So i’m here to cast a brick for attracting the jade. (i volunteer to give an opinion so that others may follow suit.)I’m the first the other 4 teachers will give the lectures after me.
2. Give teachers some advice about teaching.
When I read the curriculum standards so many ideas occured in my mind. I want to express them to you. Maybe all of them can help you in the class teaching.
3. Knowing something about the background of curriculum standards.
When teachers read the curriculum standards they usally pay attention to the details about: What works well? What does not work? How can I motivate my students better? How can I better prepare my students for tests? How should I change or adapt my lesson next time?
All the thoughts are good. But they are shortsighted. Today we are talking about some things larger deepper and farsighted. Guiding teachers apprehend the curriculum standards more integrally.
II. Background of the curriculum standards recension.
Ministry of education published the curriculum standard s (Experimental version) in 2001. Its essential notion is “using language synthetically”. The experimental version of english curriculum standards called for fundamental change in how English is taught and learned in China, and it carefully detailed the language skills, language knowlege, affect and attitudes, learning strategies, and cultural consciousness that students are expected to acquire.
After 10 years experimentation, English instruction has been steping a new era. According to this situation MOE revised the curriculum standards.
III.Principles of revision.
Many experts give thire opinions of the principles of this revision. I read a lot of them, combined them with my own, I list 4 principles below.
1. Persevering in direction of reform.
The new curriculum standards sum up the experiences in 10
years, and conforming to the request of today. It keeps the frame and the goal system consistently with the Experimental version.
2. Give prominence to curriculum importance.
Many teachers around us limit their teaching to what is in the textbook and what will be on the tests. Yet in spite of hard work, their instruction results in memorization on language facts rather than in fluent language use.
In standards-based teaching and learning, the goal is not simply to pass a test or complete exercises in a textbook. It is to enable students to use English effectively. Textbooks and tests are impotant tools, but they are means to an end, not ends in themselves.
The english curriculum standards is the students’ standards. It discribes what students should know and be able to use English well, and, therefore, they establish the purposes of instruction.
3. Appropriately adjust goals and content.
With the fast development of economy and education, the social attention more and more keep focus on the imbalance of education. For this situation, this vertion of curriculum standards beased on the medium English learning level of students on compulsory education stage. It reduced the goals requirement of the students’language
