英语试题

A

Look at the map of Spain and point at the center. You’ve located the country’s capital and one of Europe’s most beautiful cities: Madrid. This popular destination is considered a city of contrasts with its abundant historic sites standing in the shadows of modern skyscrapers.

History

This city of over 3 million people is proud of Western Europe’s largest royal palace —the Royal Palace of Madrid, and some consider it to be Madrid’s most beautiful building.

Inside the Royal Palace of Madrid, 2, 800 rooms are decorated in glory with quality furniture and artworks. Tourists can tour 50 of these large and splendid rooms.

Art

The Internationally respected Prado Museum is one of the largest and most impressive art galleries in Spain. Opened in 1819, it is filled with works of art that feature the world’s most comprehensive collection of Spanish painting.

Shopping

Madrid has some of Europe’s best shopping malls, and potential buyers love to look through the stores looking for bargains. But for 500 years, shoppers have gathered to an extremely large outdoor flea market known as el Rastro where they find everything from antiques(古董) to CDs.

Entertainment

No trip to Madrid is complete without seeing a performance of Spain’s famous art form, flamenco. Every day, flamenco performers sing, dance or play the guitar in small cafes and grand theaters alike.

Food

Madrid has a wide variety of restaurants, but because the Spanish typically eat late at about 9 or 10 p.m., it’s difficult to find good dinner food earlier. If you get hungry before then, the best solution is to try a tapas bar where light snacks are served. Be sure to try the jamón, a kind of dry-cured ham: Spain is famous for it.

At first glance, Ronny looked like every other kid in the first-grade classroom where I volunteered as the Reading Mom. However, he arrived at school dirty every morning, and along with his outward appearance, Ronny stood apart from his classmates in other ways, too. His home was a mess and his parents never settled in one place. He had yet to live a full year in any one place.

Every time when it was Ronny’s turn to read, he would sit close to me. I watched his fingers move slowly under each letter as he struggled to sound out “Bud the Sub.” It sounded more like “Baw Daw Saw”when he said it because of his speech impediment and his difficulty with the alphabet.

The year passed quickly and Ronny had made some progress but hardly enough to bring him up to grade level. A few weeks before the school year ended, I held an award ceremony. It took me a while to figure out where Ronny fit; I needed something positive, but there wasn’t really much. I finally decided on “Most Improved Reader”. I presented Ronny with his certificate and a book.

A few days later, I returned to the school to visit. I saw Ronny read the book. His teacher appeared beside me. “He hasn’t put that book down since you gave it to him. It’s the first book he’s ever actually o wned.”

Fighting back tears, I approached Ronny and asked, “Will you read me your book, Ronny?” He glanced up and nodded.

And then, for the next few minutes, he read to me with more expression, clarity, and ease than I’d ever thought possible for him When he finished reading, Ronny closed his book and said with great satisfaction, “Good book.”

At that moment, I knew I would get serious about my own writing career and do what that author had done, and probably still does—care enough to write a story that changes a child’s life, care enough to make a difference.

I want to be that author.

4、The underlined word “impediment”in Paragraph 2 probably means.

A、technique

B、disability

C、anxiety

D、style
