1．Introduction of the Kite

Kite is a man-made object, which is controlled by a string when flying in the sky.

Kite, invented by the Chinese, originated in the Spring and Autumn Dynasty. It has a history of more than 2,000 years. China has good technology in making kites. Kite can be of many forms. But most of them are to imitate animals like fish, dragon, butterfly and bat etc.Their patterns re present Chinese culture and reflect Chinese people’s hope of good lives.

There are 5 cities called“The hometown of kite”, they are Kaifeng, Beijing, Tianjin, Weifang and Nantong. Especially Weifang is very famous for “Weifang International Kites Festival”. It is held in April every year. Many people from China and other countries will attend this show. They all enjoy this very much.

2. Why Kite can fly

Kite flies up into the sky by the force of wind. When we look at the flying kite, it always flies against the wind. Also, the body of the kite is always in a tilted downward direction, which is the key point for kite’s flying. The kite is very light, so the pushing of air is enough to let the kite fly in the sky.

As we know, the kite has its own weight. Then why it cannot fall down from the sky? It is because that the air gives the much support for the kite, it makes the kite be able to float or fly in the air.

It is really very interesting. Attached to a long string, the kite can be sent up through the action of wind on its surfaces. Its distance or height is controlled from the ground by playing out the string.

First kites are applied in military and communications. Sarting from Tang Dynasty, kite has gradually become an object for people’s viewing and flying. Around the time of the 8th Century, Kite was introduced to other countries around the world. Since then, Kites have been used for various uses both in China and abroad.

Kites was used for signaling, lifting an observer above the field of battle. The kite photography led to many victories in battles. Kites can also be used for scientific research. We have all known the kite story about Benjamin Franklin who flew a kite in a thunderstorm. By using the kite, he was the first man to prove that lightening is electricity, and invented lightning arrester.

Today flying the kite becomes an activity enjoyed by the people around the World. Kites can be seen flying in the sky all around the world , and has filled our life with more happiness and laughter.

4. The skills of flying kite

For flying a kite, you’d better choose a windy day. In north China, spring is the best season for flying kite in a year.

Before flying a kite, you should make clear the wind direction according to the flags nearby. Then the kite should be flown against the wind. If the wind is big enough, just by loosening the string, the kite can be flown up. If the wind is small, you should run for some distance to fly it.

After the kite is flown in the sky, if you feel the kite has a downward trend, you should quickly roll in the string. If you feel that the kite has a pulling force, you should roll out the string in time. After the kite is flown about 800 meters in the sky, you can tie the kite on the tree or other object, allowing it to fly freely.
