When shopping, we were walking in the supermarket and noticed someone walking down the aisle with her head down. Skylar walked up to her and gave her a big smile. I watched her walk down the aisle, turned around and smiled at Skylar again or perhaps smiled at someone else.Kindness is a chain that pulls us all together. Every single act of kindness has a rippleeffect(连锁反应). In 2002, my dad had a series of strokes and other illness. My dad had been doing nice things for all sorts of people for years, from the street crossing guard, to the waitress in a restaurant, to a friend’s mother. That same day, I made cookies for the janitor(门卫)at the post office. When I gave him the cookies he actually looked a little embarrassed. “Why, Linda?” he asked. “Because I appreciate you!” I answered. “When I get here at 6 am and it is still dark out and it is a little scary, I know you are inside and I feel safe. And when I first moved here and my post office box was always empty, you always cheered me on. And you always keep this place clean.”That evening his wife called me and said that he was overwhelmed(受宠若惊的). “No one even knows his name, let alone bakes him cookies!” she said. Irish-born Campbell and Japanese Omura won half of the prize for discovering a new drug, avermectin, that has helped the battle against river blindness and lymphatic filariasis, as well as showing effectiveness against other parasitic diseases. The Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, an 85-year-old female scientist, was awarded the other half of the prize for the discovery of artemisinin(青篙素), a drug cure for malaria(疟疾) that has saved millions of lives all over the world, especially in the developing world. When the news broke that Tu won the Nobel Prize, there were cheers as well as doubts. It also has highlighted differences in prize-awarding practices between China and the West. Some said the achievement was the result of collective efforts by lots of Chinese scientists, so it was unfair to award the prize only to Tu. Indeed, Chinese science awards are mainly presented to projects, instead of individual scientists. But Western awards tend to honor individual scientists who are the first to come up with a new idea or method. Li Zhenzhen, a researcher of the China Academy of Sciences said that the West believes that the advancement of science comes from individual s’ creative minds. In 1969, Tu started to hold a government project aimed at eliminating malaria. Tu and her teammates experimented with 380 extracts in 2,000 candidate recipes before they finally succeeded in getting the pure substance qinghaosu, later known as artemisinin. In 2011, Tu was awarded the Lasker Debakey Clinical Medical Research Award, commonly referred to as “America’s Nobel Prize”. B2. C3. C4. C5. B6. D7. B8. B9. C 10. A11. D 12. D第二部分13. f x=x−114. −315. π216. f x=x−22+1(不唯一)第三部分17. (1)原式=53−23−1+2=2.(2)原式=lg2lg2+lg50+lg25=lg4+lg25=lg100=2.18. (1)当a=3时,A=x−1≤x≤5,B= x x≤1 或x≥4,所以A∩B= x−1≤x≤1,或 4≤x≤5.(2)若A=∅,此时2−a>2+a,所以a<0,满足A∩B=∅.当a≥0时,A=x2−a≤x≤2+a≠∅,因为A∩B=∅,所以2−a>1,2+a<4,所以0≤a<1.综上可知,实数a的取值范围是−∞,1.19. (1)由f−x=−f x得f−1=−f1,所以a=1.

Your parents, while you were a young child? Your teachers at school ? Perhaps even the BBC as a grown-up. Whoever it was, somehow you have developed an understanding of what is rapidly becoming a truly global language. There are now about 376 million people who speak English as their first language and about the same number who have learnt it besides their mother tongue. It is said there are one billion people learning English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in English. Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures? Or should we worry about the dangers of “mono-culturalism", a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food and listen to the same music?Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? On the contrary (相反),I would have thought——although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India (where many of them speak at least some English) and Pakistan (the same situation with India)…If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonald's burgers? Surely not. If English becomes more dominant (占主导地位的), it will kill other languages? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak notonly their own language but also one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well. When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic email from a listener in Ireland. "The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it's like a rose," he said. "But who would ever want their garden just full of roses?"Well, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. Teachers first noticed Cameron Thompson’s talent for numbers when he was four years old and at pre-school. Throughout primary school, Cameron Thompson’s best subject was maths. Then, when he was eleven, he took a maths test prior to entering secondary school. The test was out of 140; Cameron scored 141. “I broke the system,” he recalls.
But his academic achievements have not always been matched by social success. “I have the social ability of a talking potato,” he admits. In other words, he feels more at ease with numbers than among other teenagers.
Communication is not one of Cameron’s strong points and, apart from the problems this causes socially, it is now beginning to affect his marks in mathematics. This is because, at undergraduate level, he is expected to give reasons for his answers together with the answers themselves. Cameron’s difficulty is that he often doesn’t know how he has arrived at the answers, even though the answers are usually correct.

Without such problems, animals in zoos should live to a ripe old age. But that may not be true for the largest land animals on earth. Scientists have known that elephants in zoos often suffer from poor health. They develop diseases, joint problems and behavior changes. Sometimes, they even become infertile. To learn more about how captivity affects elephants, a team of international scientists compared the life spans of female elephants born in zoos with those living outdoors in their native habitats. Zoos keep detailed records of all the animals in their care, documenting factors such as birth dates, illnesses, weight and death. These records made it possible for the researchers to analyze 40 years of data on 800 African and Asian elephants in zoos across Europe, North America and Asia. The scientists found that female elephants born in zoos lived an average of 16.9years. Their wild counterparts who died of natural causes lived an average of 56 years - more than three times as long.Scientists don't yet know why wild elephants seem to fare so much better than their zoo - raised counterparts. Georgia Mason, a biologist at the University of Guelph in Canada who led the study, thinks that stress and obesity may be to blame. Zoo elephants don't get the same kind of exercise they would in the wild, and most are fed a diet of corn instead of their natural vegetation.Another finding from the study showed that Asian elephants born in zoos were more likely to die early than African elephants born in zoos. Mason suggests that different species may react differently to the stress of captivity.1. What does the underlined word "ripe" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A. Smooth.B. Mature.C. Disease - free.D. Tu and her teammates experimented with 380 extracts in 2,000 candidate recipes before they finally succeeded in getting the pure substance qinghaosu, later known as artemisinin.
