Food is a major part of every culture. After all, everyone needs to eat! But each country has its own traditions on what people eat and when.
Egypt
Egyptians commonly start the day with a drink, sometimes going with bread. Breakfast can be
eaten any time after this but before the day’s main meal. In the past, this main meal was served at around 3:00 p.m. But no w people work longer hours and eat when they get home at around 6:00 p.m. Dinner parties are held later, around 9:00 p.m.
Most Egyptian meals include bread or rice, cooked vegetables and beans or meat.
France
France is known for its fine cooking, and its people take food seriously. Most eat three meals a day at fixed times and n ever snack between meals. Breakfast is a light meal of bread and coffee. They eat lunch at around 1:00 p.m. and a dinner wit h multiple courses after 8:00 p.m.
The French consider eating a social activity. Eating alone is hard to see, and eating while doing something else is u nheard-of. The French take time to enjoy their meals and visitors should do the same.
Brazil
Like the French, Brazilians usually eat a light breakfast. Lunch, the largest meal of the day,
usually consists of meat, rice, potatoes, beans and vegetables. Between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.,
people enjoy a smaller meal with their families.
Brazilians don’t mind eating a hurried or light meal and sometimes buy food from street carts(手推车). But they always finish eating before walking away.
The United States
American’s ancestors came from many countries, so American eating habits differ. Some take time to prepare and eat a hot breakfast. Others take a bagel(面包圈)while rushing out the door or just skip breakfast. For lunch, most Americans eat a sandwich or leftovers. Traditionally, famil ies got together for a large evening meal around 6:00, but now busy
schedules force many families to eat in turns. American restaurant servings tend to be huge. But you don’t have to finish th em; taking leftovers home is common.

Jorge and Maria Ramirez and their six-year-old son are smiling and laughing as they watch
the baby giant panda. They are at a zoo as part of a large crowd watching the baby panda learning to walk. Why are people s o attracted by the baby giant panda? Cuteness(可爱)is the answer.
Experts say the things we describe as “cute” share several qualities. What makes something “cute” is different from w hat makes something “beautiful”. People often describe pandas as cute, but they don’t usually say they are beautiful. A butte rfly, on the other hand, may be beautiful but not cute. While we tend to admire beautiful things, we do not tend to have the f ondness for them that cute things inspire in us.
Scientists have identified some key facial features(特点) and behaviors that cute things have
in common. Two important features are a round face and bright eyes. The position of the eyes is also important; the eyes sh ould at least appear to face forward and not be high on the face. There are also certain behaviors that cute things have in co mmon, such as walking and moving arms, legs and wings unsteadily. Other important qualities of cuteness include you th, innocence, and neediness, as well as being vulnerable to possible harm or danger.
The baby panda, with its round face, big black eye patches and unsteady movements, has all the key features which a dd up to being cute. Another popular creature that shares many of these
cute qualities is the baby emperor penguin. And many of people’s pets can be described as cute.
Scientists believe there is an important reason why we are attracted to all these cute qualities. It is because human babi es have all these qualities. They have round faces, bright eyes and
unsteady movements. Human babies cannot get by without help from adults. Scientists point out that the cuteness of babies makes adults want to take care of them. This allows babies to survive, become adults and have their own babies. This cycle ensures the human species continues.
Advertisers use the special attraction of cute things in their attempts to get us buy their
products. In Japan, for example, one of the most popular images is Hello Kitty. Many cartoon
animal characters have round faces and large, bright eyes that face forward. In the real world,
ducks and mice do not have round faces, and their small eyes are on the side of their heads.
The Ramirez family is not aware of all of this. For now, they are too busy taking pictures and admiring the baby panda.
59. Why does the author mention the Ramirez family in the first paragraph?
A. To give an example of cuteness.
B. To bring readers close to the topic.
C. To give readers some idea of admiration.
D. To develop the main view of the passage.
60. From the passage, we can learn that being cute ______.
A. changes people’s facial features.
B. motivates people to give their help.
C. inspires people in dangerous situations.
D. shares the same qualities with being beautiful.
61. Which of the following is one most important cut quality?
A. Beautiful eyes.
B. Friendly to people.
C. Newly born.
D. Unsteady movement.
62. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Being Cute to Survive
B. Cute and Beautiful
C. Feature of Cute Animals
D. Making Babies Cute

My name is Tristan. I am a 19-year-old professional race car driver. Because of my unusual job, I am able to spread the word about the dangers of distracted (分心的) driving all across the country. I give talks at schools in the cities where I race. During 2014, I spoke to
almost 50,000 students!
When I was 15 years old, I was riding in the car with my mother, who was texting and
driving. She nearly ran into the back of someone. I knew at that moment that I had to do
something to change people’s actions. Having spoken to thousands of students over the years, I have found that change st arts with one person and can grow really fast.
It’s unfortunate that much of the change in ideas about drunk driving, seat belts, and now
distracted driving is most influenced by some extremely unpleasant and shocking images and
videos of what can happen. I am trying to get to people BEFORE something bad happens. The
influence is far-reaching in that we can save lives. To say the least, my mom doesn’t text and drive anymore. Perhaps I save her life – maybe even my own!
After three years’ advising against distracted driving and working to raise awareness to
prevent texting while driving, I started an organization named Dnt txt n drV. The organization
raises awareness about the issue through my professional auto racing career and my efforts to
communicate the dangers of distracted driving. The organization plans to hold a series of
fundraising events to raise money to support scholarship programs for schools and students who
are working to make a difference in their communities to stop texting while driving.

World Water Day
On March 22nd, the World Water Day, our school organized various activities to increase
stud ents’ awareness of the importance of water.
In the morning an expert from the Ministry of Water Resources gave us a talk on limited water
resources in China. In the afternoon some students visited the waste water treatment plant where they learned how water w as recycled. Some other students went to an exhibition on water saving devices, and they brought back good ideas and tips for saving water in daily life. For example, we could take shorter shower and turn off the tap while brushing our teeth. We c ould also reuse waste water from the washing machines to clean the floor.
At the end of the day, one student suggested we make every day a water saving day. All
students supported it.。
