BGI Reports Study Results on Frequent Mutation of Genes Encoding Ubiquitin-Mediated Proteolysis Pathway Components in Kidney Cancer
BGI announced that a study on frequent mutation of genes encoding ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis pathway (UMPP) components in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is published online today in Nature Genetics. In addition to BGI, co-leaders of the study included Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital, among others. The study reveals that alteration of UMPP may contribute to ccRCC by activation of the hypoxia regulatory network, providing new clues to trace the key molecular mechanisms and pathways that underlie the tumorigenesis and progression of ccRCC. More Mongolia University for the Nationalities (IMUN) and BGI jointly announced the first complete sequencing of Mongolian genome. This genomic study will help researchers to better understand the evolutionary process and migration of Mongolians and their ancestors from Africa to Asia, which also lays an important genomic foundation for further development of human genetic diseases research. Collaboration for Large-scale Genome Sequencing of Cassava – Fourth Major Food Crop in Developing World – Announced by BGI and International Center for Tropical Agriculture
The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and BGI announced a collaborative agreement to sequence 5,000 cassava genotypes, including landraces, improved varieties, experimental populations and related wild species of the crop. Cassava is the fourth most important provider of dietary calories in developing countries (after maize, wheat and rice.) Results of this research project will enable a major advance in applying modern genomics technology and analytics to improving this orphan crop. CIAT and BGI invite the cassava research community to join in this collaborative effort. More
BGI Debuts “BGI-BOX” Cloud Computing Solution for Accessing Bioinformatics Software and Large Genomic Data Sets
BGI successfully commenced the trial operation of “BGI-BOX” its first cloud computing terminal server, at China Agricultural University on December 8. BGI-BOX allows users to access bioinformatics software and genomic data in their own laboratories with the advantage of a highly flexible and user-friendly interface designed for users without a bioinformatics background. International Experts to Explore the Mysterious Microbial Life in Extreme Environments
The International Conference on Microbial Life in Extreme Environments, co-organized by BGI, the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS), and Yunnan Institute of Microbiology, was held at Kingkey Palace Hotel, Shenzhen, China. This is the first conference focusing on the genomics and genetics of microorganisms inhabited in extreme environments. More than 100 biologists from the field of microbiology in extreme environments attended this conference with the aim to exchange progresses on research, improve existing approaches and develop new strategies for microbial studies, as well to promote the use of micro-organism in environment, human health and other fields. Genomic Sequences of Two Iconic Falconry Birds - Peregrine and Saker Falcons- Successfully Decoded by International Research Group
A group of scientists from United Kingdom (UK), China and United Arab Emirates (UAE) jointly announced the complete sequencing of peregrine and saker falcons genomes at the 2nd International Festival of Falconry held in Al Ain, UAE. The study is a part of Falcon Genome Project, launched and funded by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) in this January. The results will enable biologists to better study the basic biology and genetics of falcons and provide new insights into understanding the origin and populations of these species. More

BGI Study Results on Resequencing 50 Accessions of Cultivated and Wild Rice Cast New Light on Molecular Breeding
BGI announced that a study on resequencing 50 accessions of cultivated and wild rice was published online today in Nature Biotechnology. The study provides one of the largest genome variation data sets for wild and cultivated rice, which is valuable for breeding and for identifying agronomically important genes in rice. This data also yields new insights for geneticists and biologists to deeply explore the domestication history of cultivated rice. More
