Good evening, everyone. I am standing here to do the presentation on the difference between the novel and film adaptation. I would use the Great Gatsby as my main object of discussion, and the Joy Luck Club and Dear John will be examples to verify my conclusion.

As the representative work of Fitzgerald, many readers and scholars have studied The Great Gatsby in terms of social background, theme analysis, writing style, discourse strategies, translation and so on. However, I would like to compare the novel and its 2013 film adaptation and share with you. On the basis of background knowledge, I found that even though 2013 film adaptation has its own advantage in lyrical ways and visual expressions like its splendid music and songs, dazzling jewels and costumes, is still can not match the classic novel because of the novel’s delicacy and Fitzgerald’s mature writing skills. Film tried to use these bright light and shadows to make up its weakness, but when watching the film carefully, we will find these defects are more distinct. The film shot by the famous director has put so much emphasis on the glorious visual feast to recur that “Jazz Age” or “Roaring Twenties”, leaving the viewers strong sense of impression of materialism. It brings the viewers to gulping and swallowing breathlessly without thinking, and eventually loses itself in that bustling world. If the film adaptation were an alluring woman, the novel of Fitzgerald would be a fresh and elegant girl.The film is more attractive in the first eyes, but it lost itself. The film adaptation are talking about love while the novel talks about ambitions.Love is more popular and attractive, of course.It can create more treasure as the topic of a film. But we need ambitions in a developing sight. And that film is the adaptation of a great novel.

There are same tragedies happened. In the film adaptation of Dear John, even the ending of the novel was changed into a happy ending. There’s no quiet and far moon on the hill.But it’s more liked by publi c. So as the Joy Luck Club.

Nowadays movies are directed for business aim. Film adaptation is no longer a literary matter but also a commercial operation. These film adaptation can be watched to know about the novel, but if you want to study it, Novel is still the best choice.
