Ⅳ.阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项A
English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the w orld’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.
However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neit her pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.
And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.
55. According to the passage ______.
A. boxing rings should be round
B. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree
C. there should be egg in an eggplant
D. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are dif ferent things
56. Which of the following is the correct plural (复数形式) form?
A. Beeth.
B. Meese.
C. Geese.
D. Tooth.
57. Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?
A. Quite a lot and quite a few.
B. Overlook and oversee.
C. A wise man and a wise guy.
D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.
58. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human
beings are ______.
A. lazy
B. crazy
C. clever
D. stupid

Now we are always hearing about road accidents and when we are in a car we try to drive carefully, })ut how many of tls take the same degree of care in our homes? Any large hospital will tell you the number of accidents that happen in the home is almost the same as those on the road. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I've thought a lot alx)ut how and why these accidents happen and what we can do to prevent them.
One of the commonest and most dangerous causes of home accidents is wrong and careless use of electrical equipment. People will continue to use a loose plug or pull out a plug (插头) without first turning off the power. In spite of warnings, one will carry an electric heater (电炉) into the bathroom when be is going to have a bath. Sometimes one forgets to cut off the power before repairing a lamp or something else. All this will cause accidents. So the rule about anything that works by electricity is: Switch off before your touch anything and don' t pretend you know when you actually don't.
If you've got children in the house, it' s always best to keep medicines of any kind out of their reach. Otherwise, they may be taken for candies or a new kind of drink. When there are
older people living with you, you have to take particular care in a number of ways in order to make them safe and happy.
Fire, of course, is always a risk. So, remember not to dry clothes in front of fires, or leave stoves in the middle of rooms where they can easily be knocked over. And don' t forget to keep the children away from fire. Smoking, tm, may cause fire. So you'd better give it up.
Safety first may mean a little more time and care, but it may save you a lot of trouble.
59. The writer thinks the reason why there are so many accidents in our homes is that we are
A. less careful in our homes than in a car
B. more careful in our homes than in a car
C. as careful in our homes as in a car
D. not so careful in a car as in our homes
60. The writer advises you ......... about the use of electrical equipment.

B. to pretend that you don't know anything

A. get on
B. get to

A. leave stoves in the middle of the rooms
B. dry clothes near stoves
C. tell children to stay away from fire
D. smoke away from fires

In the United States, it is not usual to telephone .someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early ill the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. S,,o il is with the telephone calls made after 11:00 l)m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he may think that it's a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.
In racial life, time plays a very important part. Ill the USA guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party reaches them only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time is not the same in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings begin to exist between people from different cultures that treat time differently; being on time is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not on time, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the USA no one would think of keeping a business friend for an hour; it would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late is expected to make a short apology. If he is less than 5 minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.
63. A call at midnight would mean
A. the matter is less important
B. the matter is least important
C. the matter requires immediate attention
D. it is a matter of life and death
64. According to the passage, time carries meanings in all parts of the world.

B. The Saving of Time
C. The importance of an Announcement

People who almost never go to a doctor when they are sick will take their cars to a repairman at the first sign of a problem. Those who don't like to work around the home on Saturdays may devote most of that day to washing and waxing (打蜡) their cars. For some families it is not enough to have one car. They often have two or three--one for work and one for recreation (娱乐).
Many men and women in the United States need to have a car. Many need a car to go to work. Housewives need a car to go shopping or to take the children to school or other activities.
In most states young people learn to drive in high school, where driver training is one of the most popular courses. At the end of the course the student must take a driving test to get a license. For many, the piece of paper is an important symbol (象征) that they are now grown-ups.

Fat on human body is distributed (分布) in two different ways. Some fat people have a large chest and no waistline (腰身), looking rather like apples. Others are fatter below the waist, looking more like pears.
Doctors in Cambridge, England have been examining the relationship between health and fat distribution. They find that the pear-shaped fat people have fewer problems than the apple-shaped people. What seems to be most important is not just how much fat you have but where you have it. The doctors measured the apple-shaped women and pear-shaped women and examined them with X-ray scanners (X光扫描器). Human beings have two types of fat, one is outside fat that is the fat below the skin and the other is inside fat that lies inside the body. Using the X-ray scanners, the doctors found that the "apples" have a large amount of inside fat. If this inside fat is much more than outside fat, it will probably cause health problems such as obesity (肥胖病). The best treatment for obesity is to reduce the inside fat. But unfortunately diet treatment (饮食疗法)simply makes an apple-shaped person into a smaller apple and a pear-shaped person into a smaller pear. At the moment there is no effective way of reducing the inside fat.
71. According to the relation between health and fatness
A. it's better to be pear-shaped than apple-shaped
B. it's better to be apple-shaped than pear-shaped
C. apple-shaped fat people have fewer problems than pear-shaped people

72. The most important thing about fat people seems to be
A. the amount of fat they have
B. the place where they have the fat
C. the amount of the outside fat they have
D. which type of the fat people they belong to
73. If you are fatter below your hip (臀部) you are
A. either an apple-shaped person or a pear-shaped person
B. neither a pear-shaped person nor an apple-shaped person
C. a pear-shaped person
D. an apple-shaped person
74. The basic reason why some people suffer from obesity is that
A. they take very little exercise every day
B. they eat too much
C. they are examined by X-ray scanners quite often
D. they have much more inside fat
75. Accordiring to what is mentioned, the best treatment for obesity at present is __
A. to reduce the amount of food and drinks
B. to make the body shape smaller
C. still to be found
D. already known to those people in trouble.
