A
Dear Marc,
You may consider this an anonymous(匿名的) testimonial.
We came to your seminar(研究班) with many difficulties and near violent anger, definitely emotionally
violent. After taking your course we learned and practiced many of the techniques and principles you taught in the seminar we attended last year. It not only saved our relationship but improved our individual lives. For months and months we had all your rules taped to our walls (with 3M temporary double-sided removable pad tabs) in the bathroom above the sink, on the fridge and in my office and in the utility room. They kept reminding us of the proper ways to handle conflict and it has curtailed the damaging effects of emotional escalation(扩大) that really ruined any chance to a loving peaceful life. Although we both are far from where we’d like to be, we are thousands of miles ahead of the painful place where we were before attending your course. Spending the time with you and other couples helped us see that we were not alone and encouraged us to move through this awful phase of our relationship to a happier and more satisfying relationship. We were both motivated to learn and sincere when we came. We participated honestly and we received great rewards then and now. I believe that we have integrated your techniques into our lives to our benefit.
Thank you for your life’s work and course that has helped us grow and create a relationship that is so much more satisfying and pleasant.
We appreciate your part in our lives.
Yours,
Bill & Lori

Several times my daughter had telephoned to say, “Mother, yo u must come to see the daffodils(黄水仙) before they are over.” I wanted to go, but it was a two-hour drive from Laguna to Lake Arrowhead. “I will come next Tuesday,” I promised, a little reluctantly, on her third call.
Next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn’s house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said, “Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible in the clouds and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see!”
My daughter smiled calmly and said, “We drive in this all the time, Mother. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience.”
After about twenty minutes, we turned onto a small gravel road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read, “Daffodil Garden.”
We got out of the car and each took a child’s hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we turned a corner of the path, and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most glorious sight. There were five acres of flowers. “But who has done this?” I asked Carolyn. “It’s just one woman,” Carolyn answered. “That’s her home.” Carolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio(露台), we saw a poster. “Answers to the Questions I Know You Are
Asking” was the headline.
The first answer was a simple one. “50,000 bulbs(球茎),” it read. The second answer was, “One at a time, by one woman.” The third answer was, “Began in 1958.”
I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than forty years before, had begun — one bulb at
a time — to bring the beauty and joy to the mountain top.

44. What would be the best title of the passage?
A. A Wonderful Daffodil Garden
B. A Remarkable Woman
C. One Bulb at a Time

Every Sunday morning, as most people line up outside neighborhood breakfast spots, watch TV news shows, or head for church, Chloris Noelke-Olson is tuning up her fiddle. She’s preparing to enjoy bluegrass music the old-fashioned way: with friends, at home, for free.
“To be able to play with other people face to face and have that sort of connection, it’s spiritual,” Ms. Noelke-Olson said of the weekly house concerts in Chicago she participates in. “It’s like a good conversation with instruments —something that doesn’t seem to happen much anymore because everyone is blabbering(饶舌) on their cell phones.”
She is among a growing group of Americans who are finding it pleasant to unplug from the digital grid, at least temporarily. While there is no exact data to track how many people are forming knitting groups, hosting house concerts, or organizing family game nights, it is possible to connect the dots between the rising price of entertainment and the rising sales of board games (棋类游戏) and craft supplies.
Between 2007 and 2008, the prices for restaurant meals, concert tickets, and movie tickets all increased. At the same time, board games sales rose 6 percent, while total toy sales decreased 3 percent.
These trends are expected to continue because of the struggling economy. Instead of outfitting their homes with expensive home entertainment systems, consumers are more likely to be interfacing the old-fashioned way: eye-to-eye. Families are rediscovering ways to come together that have nothing to do with high tech.
“People are turning inward to build in enjoyment time for family and home,” said Linda Bettencourt, an interior designer in San Francisco whose clients typically live in million-dollar homes. Over the past six months, Ms. Bettencourt has been hired to redesign living spaces to foster the kind of connectivity that doesn’t invol ve wires. “The big game table is back,” she says. “People want to sit around and see each other’s faces rather than facing a flat-screen TV.”
46. Why is Chloris Noelke-Olson enjoying bluegrass music the old-fashioned way?
A. Because she likes playing musical instruments.
B. Because she wants to provide free music for her friends.
C. Because she doesn’t like talking on the cell phone.
D. Because she likes to form a close connectivity with people.
47. Ms. Bettencourt has been hired to _______.
A. connect the rich people with others
B. redesign living space for the rich people
C. give some advice to people on connectivity
D. help people to save money
48. We can infer from the last paragraph that _______.
A. home designing has become a big business
B. rich people usually pay more attention to their living space
C. even rich people are changing their ways of entertainment
D. rich people spend more on home entertainment
49. This passage is about _______.
A. a new trend in people’s entertainment i n America
B. the present economic situation in America
C. the modern family life in America
D. the change of people’s interest in America
50. If this passage is posted on the web, it most probably appears in the section of _______.
A. people

December 21, 2012 marks the completion of the 5,125 year Great Cycle of the Ancient Maya Long Count Calendar.
Rather than being an end-point, this cycle that is closing is naturally followed by the start of a new cycle. What this new cycle has in store for humanity is a mystery that has yet to unfold...
The recent “2012” movie serves to alert a targeted 140 million people, in case they too haven’t already heard the news. Unfortunately, however, the movie does a dis-service because it distorts the message of this ancient prophecy (预言) by associating it with fear and destruction, as described by the movie’s global disaster scenario (场景), rather than the themes of transformation and renewal the prophecy is actually based on.
In other words, the global scenario of the 2012movie is not based on any facts. As Emmerich clarifies, “We only used the fact that the Mayan calendar ends. That gave us the year.” Emmerich said after checking out the range of 2012 books on Amaz on, he realized, “...there are so many (theories) that, in a way, you can just create your own.” He shares that “2012” was tacked on as a title to his disaster movie because it is something “people believe” and it made the movie seem more “real.”
Interest ingly, Emmerich’s underlying motivation for the movie seems to be genuine concern about the course we are all on as modern society. As he states, “I hope we are not ruining our planet. I really believe that, if we keep going and doing what we are doing, we will not be leaving the planet how it should be, for our kids. That has been going on for generations. It’s just very sad to see and read the news, every day, and see what these people are fighting over. It’s like they don’t understand that the clock is t icking.”
51. According to the Ancient Maya Long Count Calendar, December 21, 2012 is the day on which _______.
A. the world will end with many disasters
B. the old age will end and a new one will begin
C. there will be a world flood
D. the world can survive many disasters
52. Which of the following is TRUE about the movie 2012?
A. It is intended to explore what is in store in the new cycle.
B. It tells us about the Ancient Maya Long Count Calendar as it is.
C. It is just based on the director’s id eas.
D. It describes the ancient prophecy vividly.
53. What Emmerich says suggests that _______.
A. he is quite concerned about the present situation on the earth
B. he is regretful that people have misunderstood his movie
C. he himself believes what is described in the movie
D. he just wants to attract viewers by the disaster scenario
54. By this passage, the author intends to _______.
A. tell us about what the movie 2012 is all about
B. help the director to promote his film
C. tell us what we should learn from the movie 2012
D. explain whether we can trust the ancient prophecy
55. The underlined word “distort” in the passage probably means _______.
A. change something in a wrong way
B. convey the original meaning
C. describe something clearly
D. give more proof to something

[1] It seems parents have long been right. Going to bed early is key to getting enough sleep and helping adolescents feel on top of the world, a new study reported.
[2] A lack of sleep among youngsters may cause depression and suicidal (自杀的) thoughts, according to the study.
[3] “Our results are consistent with the theory that inadequate sleep is a risk factor for depression, working with other risks and protective factors through multiple possible causal (因果的) pathways to the development of this mood disorder,” said lead author James Gangwisch. “Adequate quality sleep could therefore be a preventative measure against depression and a treatment for depression.”
[4] The study followed the nightly habits of some 15,659 college and high-school students, and found those who consistently went to bed after midnight had a 24 percent higher risk of depression than those who turned in before 10:00 pm. They also ran a 20 percent higher risk of battling suicidal thoughts.
[5] The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that adolescents should sleep at least nine hours or more a night. Those who went to bed before 10:00 pm reported they slept on average about eight hours and 10 minutes. But that amount of sleep dropped significantly for those in bed after midnight. Adolescents who slept five hours or less a night were 71 percent more likely to suffer depression and 48 percent more at risk of becoming suicidal, the study said.
[6] “It is a c ommon view and social expectation that adolescents do not need as much sleep as pre-adolescents, yet studies suggest that adolescents _____________________,” said Gangwisch. “Studies have found that adolescents do not go to bed early enough to make up for earlier school start times, and earlier school start times have been shown to be associated with significant sleep deprivation (剥夺).”

________________________________________________________
57. List two bad effects that lack of sleep may have on adolescents based on the passage. (within 6 words)

2. C。

make up one’s mind to do sth. 意为“下定决心做某事”;devote one’s life to doing sth.

A项中has应改为having,C项which应改为where(意思不同),D项应在each 前加and。

6. C。

more A than B结构意为“与其说……不如说……”。

A和B可以是形容词、名词等。

句意:依我看,与其说他友好不如说他善良。

7. A。

where在此句中相当于in the place / situation where。

根据since she didn’t turn up 可知“我们不必等”,故选D。

12. A。

第一个most意为“非常、很”,相当于very,故用a;第二个most后有范围in the book,因此表示最高级,要用the。

would rather (that) sb. did sth. 表示现在或将来宁愿做的事;would rather (that) sb. had done sth.

15. B。

do sb. a favor, do a favor for sb.

One possible version
Dear sir/madam,
I’m pleased to hear from you. In your letter you ask about the optional courses in our school. Now I’d like to tell you something about them. This term our school has offered more than 10 optional courses, from which students can choose according to their interest. The courses are given from 3:30 to 5:00 every Tuesday afternoon.
Students take great interest in the optional courses. Their favorites are computer, spoken English, arts and so on. They say they have got a great deal of practice and they have learned a lot that can’t be gained from textbooks. However, many students hope more optional courses will be included while their homework should be reduced. They suggest more trips and visits should be organized and they should take part in more social practice so that they can learn more about what is going on outside school.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
