Abstract The electric car is one of the keys to achieving sustainable mobility – along with more efficient internal combustion engines, intelligent lightweight design and alternative sources of energy such as natural gas and next generation biogenic fuels. The Volkswagen Group is fully committed to electric mobility and is driving the development of the electric car forward using its modular assembly strategy, the results of which can already be seen in the XL1 and the Golf blue-e-emotion. Before we are able to produce a practical, affordable "electric car for everyone," however, we face four major challenges: (1) developing the technology (especially the battery), (2) setting up an extensive standardized infrastructure, (3) ensuring an environmentally friendly source of electricity, and (4) driving down costs to a competitive level. All this makes electric mobility the challenge of the century – for the automotive industry and the European industrial community as a whole. It is an issue that concerns us all: manufacturers, suppliers, energy providers, scientists and politicians alike.
Es gilt das gesprochene Wort. Check against delivery.
A prime example is the Golf blue-e-motion. In 2013, this Golf and the eUp! will signal the start of a new electric era at Volkswagen. We will soon be launching a test fleet in Wolfsburg. Followed by Hanover, Berlin and a number of cities around the world – including a planned test in Austria . Here are a few facts and figures: The E-Golf's lithium-ion battery comprises 30 modules with 180 cells and has a capacity of 26.5 kWh. The electric powertrain is located right at the front in the engine compartment. The heart of the car is an 80 kg electric motor. The energy is managed by a powerful pulse inverter that together with the 12 volt DC/DC converter and the charger makes up the integral powertrain.

Ladies and Gentleman, As the chairman of Volkswagen and as an engineer, there are many reasons why I enjoy coming to Austria. Firstly, not only are you passionate about your cars, you also appreciate and nurture the art of engineering. Secondly, Volkswagen has been the undisputed number one brand on your roads for 54 years. And thirdly, we have recently strengthened our presence here in Austria through Porsche Holding Salzburg. So I believe I can say, without a shadow of doubt, that Volkswagen is now an integral part of Austria. And not to mention the close collaboration between Volkswagen and local universities such as Vienna University of Technology. A relationship we aim to strengthen. And no doubt my subject today will also be on the agenda. "Electromobility for everyone" – I believe that, at present, there is still a big question about whether this is viable. All the same, the electric car has "electrified" our industry.

To see how, look no further than the Vienna Motor Symposium – the "home" of modern powertrain technology. Here, it's no longer just about efficient TSI, TDI and FlexFuel engines. It's now also about hybrid and electric vehicles. And with good reason – because the electric car is the long-term future of mass mobility.

All this gives the E-Golf a range of up to 150 kilometers. Not only that, it also delivers an impressive 270 Newton meters of torque from a standing start. Which makes our electric Golf a real Volkswagen: For not only is it environmentally friendly and efficient but it's also incredibly practical and fun to drive.
