A new law makes it legal (合法) to have dogs in the outdoor areas of restaurants in New York. Past health and safety laws made it not legal to bring dogs to any restaurants in New York. This was to prevent the spread of diseases.
State lawmakers voted in May to let people bring dogs to restaurants that have tables outdoors. These areas are often called patios. None of the lawmakers voted no. Late Monday night Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the law. New York joins California, Florida and Maryland in the list of states with similar laws.
In many European countries, bringing dogs to restaurants is common. Paris has allowed dogs to accompany their owners in restaurants for a long time.
Several special rules are included in this law. The dogs must be on a leash. Dogs must not share water bowls. Also, restaurants can choose to let people bring dogs or not.
But, not all New Yorkers are happy about this new law. Christopher Miller is the spokesman for the New York City Department of Health. He told the New York Daily News that letting dogs in restaurants could cause problems. “The Health Department loves all dogs, but just not at restaurants where they can create a risk to the health and safety of diners, restaurant workers and other dogs,” Miller said.
Governor Cuomo believes that this new law will help businesses grow by attracting dog owners. He also said this law “strikes the right balance” between health laws and flexibility for businesses.

Three education experts in China have written a book titled Save the Boys. According to the book, boys today are failing to become men. Boys, it says, are becoming both physically and emotionally weak. In fact, they are becoming more girly! The three experts say the education system is to blame(责怪) for this terrible change. They say today’s boys have to sit still in classrooms all day. Most of their teachers are women. That means boy students don't have good role models in school. Apart from school education, popular culture has to shoulder the blame, too. Many male role models today, the experts say, are effeminate(柔弱).
Now, if you are a boy reading this, you shouldn't get too nervous. The book just talks about social changes in general. These changes have been happening all over the world, not just in China. The world has become richer. As a result, the traditional roles of men and women have changed. We no longer live in ancient times. There is no need for men to protect their families from man eating tigers. And women are no longer financially dependent on men. Most of them have their own jobs and careers.
Becoming a man is a difficult Process. It takes a long time. Perhaps your best role
model is your father. From our fathers, we learn that a man should be honest and kind. He is responsible and hardworking. He faces difficulties bravely and doesn’t complai n or make excuses. Your father may not be physically strong. However, he does have a big heart. As long as there are good fathers, there is no need to worry about "saving " the boys.

A: Long time no see! Since the outbreak of COVID-19, I have been stayed at home for so long in the past two months. You know, the streets were almost empty, the malls were closed, and the factories were shut down. Almost all the people were 1 at home.
B: And because of this outbreak, schools didn’t open until 2 April. The twelfth graders like you came back to school on April 1st. And as a ninth grader, I only have a few 3 time to prepare for zhongkao.
A: That’s really challenging for both of us. I heard that the P.E. test is 4 in Shanghai.

A: That’s true. The biggest 6 I’ve learnt from t he COVID-19 is that nothing is more important than life itself.
B: So, as a senior high student, can you give me any advice on how to 7 when we face the virus?

三、短文填空。

用下面方框中的适当形式填入短文空格内,使短文意思正确,通顺(每词限用一次)。

(共10 小题,每小题 1 分;计10 分)
Some students expect to be able to “relax” for their four years at university. Now, they are receiving an 1 “wake-up call.” Lazy students at big universities such as Peking and Fudan are being “asked to quit” — to leave the university.
It’s a common 2 in China that once you’ve been accepted by a university, you will be sure to graduate. Your parents may even tell you that you must study hard to pass the zhongkao and then the gaokao, and once you’ve jumped these hurdles(障碍) and 3 the finish line, there will be no more pressure. University life will be a piece of cake.
There is some truth to this. At university, there is not much homework. You aren’t required to do lots of exercises or take tests 4 . And there is no pressure to be “top of the class.” But universities do require you 5 tasks, such as papers, on time. And you must pass mid-term and final exams. In the past, many universities were 6 about these requirements. Failed an exam? Don’t worry! You would be allowed to re-take an easier one. Some universities, 7 , now think making life easier for students isn’t a good idea. Allowing students to leave the university no smarter than when they entered 8 isn’t really helping them. It also makes the diploma (文凭) not so valuable and hurts the fame of the university.
Gaining knowledge is the purpose of education at all 9 , from primary school to university. And there is no “easy” way to get knowledge10 through hard work.
四、阅读表达。

(共10 小题,每题 1 分,计10 分)
A.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出适当的选项补全短文。

(共5 小题,每小题1 分;计 5 分)
What is life's greatest gift? It’s choice. Choice is the ability to choose some actions from a set of things to achieve a goal. 1 Choice becomes the tool we use to sculpt(雕刻) our life. The tool doesn’t come free, however, for the price of cho ice is responsibility. 2 It’s enjoyment.
Choice is power. Choice is at the heart of life. It is the creative power of life. Life is always changing and we have to make choices. 3 We often have to check where we are on our journey. We need to ask questions: Am I moving closer to my goals? If not, what action will I take now to make myself realize my goals?
4 And our life becomes more convenient or comfortable because of them. For example, you decide which stores to shop at and which bus station to go to. But the decisions that we make to sculpt our life are far more important than deciding where to shop. The more we understand the difference between small and big decisions, the greater the probability that we will experience happiness and fulfillment.
All chess lovers realize that it isn’t necessary to win to enjoy the game. 5 Life is like a chess game.
B. 阅读短文,根据其内容,完成表格中所缺信息,将答案按编号依次填入表格内的题号后。

(共 5 小题,每小题 1 分;计 5 分)
You can study the English language for years but still not understand a native(本土的)speaker of English when you meet one. Native speakers say a lot of things, but you can’t find them in any dictionary. Well, don’t worry. Here’s a secret for you: a lot of British people can’t understand each other either.
There are different local accents(口音) across the UK, and a number of areas have several different accents, that is, they have their own vocabulary and phrases. There were at least six different accents born in London.
Worse than that, one person’s accent doesn’t just depend on the place where he or she is born in the UK. For example, a language and its accents often change across levels of education. Another example is how language can differ among age groups in the UK. The words and pronunciation used by young people in the UK can be completely different compared with those used by adults. They are creating a “yoof culture”.
The word “yoof” is a slang(俚语) spelling of “youth”. Some people d on’t consider “yoof” to be a positive term(术语, since its pronunciation is easier and lazier than “youth”. Other people see the term as positive, because it describes how young people are creating their own language, concepts (观念) and identity.
When parents find it difficult to understand their children, the children can say more things without the examining of their parents. In this way, young people are starting to find freedom, independence and self-expression. Even though certain groups of society felt threatened(威胁)by “yoof culture”, new words come and go like fashions.
So learners shouldn’t be afraid of communicating with native speakers. Even British people don’t speak English properly! The UK no longer owns the English language.
