I am absolutely delighted, and incredibly proud, that London has won its bid to host the Olympic Games in 2012. We faced stiff competition from four other excellent cities, making London's win all the more impressive. The whole country of Britain pulled together to create an inspiring bid, and now the hard work and enthusiasm of the British people has paid off. We will now be working hard to ensure that we fulfill the IOC's and international expectations, making London ready to welcome the world in 2012.

As Ambassador to Beijing, I am particularly struck by the significance Britain's win has for UK–China relations. Our two countries work increasing closely together on a number of bilateral and global issues, from tackling the challenge of climate change to building on strong trade links. Now we have something else in common – we will both become proud Olympic hosts in the 21st century. I, along with the whole Chinese nation, was jubilant when Beijing won its bid to host the 2008 Olympics.

And I have been impressed by the rapid and comprehensive work that China has done to prepare for the Games. Britain has been working closely with China on its preparations: we have a number of agreements on sports between our two countries, and British architecture and engineering companies such as Arup have won contracts to design the "Bird's Nest" Stadium and the "Water Cube" National Swimming Centre here in Beijing. With London's successful bid, the opportunities for increased co-operation and partnership between the UK and China will multiply, and I will be encouraging this development wholeheartedly.

这次英国胜出对中英关系所产生的深远影响，作为英国驻华大使我感受特别强烈。不论是应对气候变化的挑战，还是建立更牢固的贸易关系，我们两个国家在许多双边问题和国际问题上的合作日益紧密。而目前，我们在另一问题上又有了共同点----我们都为能够在21世纪举办奥林匹克运动会而感到骄傲。当年我曾和全中国人民一起为北京赢得奥林匹克运动会2008年的主办权而欢呼。

London will be an excellent city to host the Games. Its unique character, combining tradition and modernity, makes it a dynamic and exciting city. This duality is reflected well in the choice of

venues for the Olympic events; for example we will be hosting tennis at Wimbledon, and football at the new Wembley stadium. Visitors to the Games will be able to experience all that London has to offer.

2005 has been a remarkable year for Britain. As president of the G8, we are taking forward work on Africa and climate change at the Gleneagles summit in Scotland this week. We began our Presidency of the EU on 1 July, working hard with EU partners and with important global partners such as China on issues of security, stability and prosperity. Winning our Olympic bid has been a real achievement for the people of Britain and we are proud that Britain has been able to play such a leading and co-operative role in the important events shaping 2005. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere good wishes to you for future co-operation between the UK and China as Olympic hosts in 2008 and 2012.
