Hip replacement

Case description:

Joao Ferreira is a75-year-old male.He presented to emergency room with increasing pain in his

right hip,which prevents him from doing his daily activities.He had tried many different pain medications with minimal benefit.Mr.Ferreira was diagnosed with osteoarthritis,which required

total hip replacement.Today is the second day after the operation.Mr.Ferreira doesn’t feel pain anymore in the operation site.But he was worried about his wound and refused to ambulate,which was reported by the previous nurse.

Now it’s9:00in the morning.You are his charge nurse today.The wound has already been treated this morning by his attending physician.

Your tasks:You have10mins to create a written plan of the tasks you must do today within30mins.

Then you have30mins to take care of him at bedside.

Perform a routine daily assessment

Perform deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis

Encourage patient to ambulate, e.g.from bed to chair

After the bedside practice,you have10mins to draw up a poster on hip replacement,such that it

could be used to teach him and his family.
