The 1st stage: Humorous
American humor literature is extremely prosperous when Mark Twain begun writing. At that time there are many writers on this basis for the creation, but most of them aimed at amusement. Mark Twain is not only for humor, but combined humor and the social phenomenon. He ever said: "If the humor came of its own accord and uninvited, I have allowed it a place in my sermon, but I was not writing the sermon for the sake of the humor."

The Mysterious Stranger
In 1590 a few boys are living happy sheltered lives in a remote Austrian village called Eseldorf. The story is narrated by one of the boys—Theodor, a first-person narrative. Theodor and his tow friends acquainted a supernatural visitor(angel) called Santa. Santa convinced the boy of the falseness of morals and the non-existence of heaven. Destroying the boy’s ideals, he vanished.
The third stage: Pessimistic
1890s, the United States rapidly developed. At that time, Twain both in mind and writing style has changed obviously. He was in debt because his publishing industry career failed. His daughter’s death made him desperate. Because of his personal misfortune, he had deeply understanding of society.
The second stage: Sarcastic
Twain Mark come to have better understanding of American society. In late 1770s , the satire in Twains work is obvious. As "running for governor" a sign, Twain Mark officially boarded the United States and the world literature as a realistic writer.
The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County
In his first short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", Mark Twain wrote a gambler. He bet everything with others. One day he caught a frog and spent three months training the Jump frog. He proudly bet with others that this frog is the most famous of the entire Calaveras County. One day, he met a stranger and bet with him. When went to catch another frog, the man filled his jumping frog belly full of shot. As a result, the stranger won and the gambler's 50 dollars was also won away.

Running for Governor is an outstanding representative of Twain's political satirical novel in 19th century, talking about “his” embarrassing election experience. The story profoundly reveals the dirty inside of "free election" and expose a capitalist "freedom of speech," thus humorously satirizing the hypocrisy of the “democracy”.
