三、阅读理解
第一节(共16小题;每小题1.5分,共30分)
A
Learners of English, especially self-taught learners may have trouble in understanding speeches by native speakers. The following ways might help improve their listening ability.
First of all, do things step by step. It is not good to listen to something beyond your level. Better choose a suitable course and start with the first book. Go on to the second book only after you are sure you understand the first one.
Secondly, stick to one course of study. Don’t change books often. Never let your attention be attracted by another course just because it seems to be more “fashionable”.
Thirdly, listen to the English news program over the radio from time to time. Better go through the news stories in the Chinese-language newspaper first. That will make it easy for you to understand the English news on the radio.
Fourthly, if you have time, listen to some interesting stories in some special English programs, such as V.O.A. or other listening materials of the same level as that of your textbook.

What to do if you don’t feel popular?
●Try to take part in activities. Call your friends. Plan to do something. The worst feeling is staying home alone, because it makes you feel even more lonely.
● Try to make new friends. Choose friends carefully, not just because you think they’re popular. And remember, making good friends takes time. Choosing a popular person to be friends with is okay. If they are nice.
●Be yourself. If you want to become friends with someone who’s popular, don’t make yourself into someone. You are not just to impress that person.
●Be nice. Be f riendly. Be outgoing. But don’t overdo it! Talk to trusted friends if you are feeling really bad. Or you might want to write it down in a journal (期刊)or diary.
● Do something special for yourself. You could take pictures of your friends, or collect their school pictures, and take a collage(拼贴画)to hang on your wall. This will remind you, when you are feeling unpopular, that you really do have friends.
● Think up your own ideas. These suggestions might not work for everyone. What to do if you have a problem with your teacher?
● Talk to your parents, or another adult who will listen to you and perhaps can help. Talk to your friends. Maybe they have had problems with the same teacher, too.
●Don’t give the teacher a reason to have problems with you. Do your work, complete your task, attend the class seriously and take notes. Maybe you just need to give the teacher a chance.
● Try to find out what the problem is.
●Talk to the teacher if you feel comfortable doing this. Don’t be nasty(闹别扭的), but express your concerns. Listen to the teacher, as well.
●Just accept the fact that you’re not going to love all your teachers.

Having returned from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station. “The railway owes me £12,” she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office . “You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.”
Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely. “I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”
The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sun burnt,” he said to her. “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”
“Yes,” she answered, shyly. “The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!”
“That’s fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can’t swim a bit yet .Of course, she’s only three…”
“I’m four,” the child said proudly. “I’ll be four and a half.”

“Er, well—” the woman looked at the child. “I mean… she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.”
“A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam. A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs …let me see…£13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe £1.50. The law is the law, but since the fault was mine…”

How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child —things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his parents. He is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things or being punished for what he has done wrong.
When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
57. According to the second paragraph, the writer thinks that ______.
A. life for a child is comparatively(相对地) easy

C. if much is given to a child, he must do something in return
D. only children are interested in life

C. can still ask for help in time of trouble
D. should be able to take care of himself
59. The underlined word “responsibilities” in the second paragraph means______.
A. duties
B. jobs
C. suggestions
D. desires
60. The main idea of the passage is ______.
A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains
B. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard
C. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s life
D. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life

高考资源网 Zhang Ming,
I know you are now having trouble communicating with others, and you may often feel lonely. That’s because we are all new here and our classmates are not quite familiar with each other. But I think you can make it if you follow the advice below.
First, you should take an active part in the discussions and freely voice your own opinions. At the same time, learn to listen to others’views. Second, you should learn about our classmates’ likes and dislikes. Gradually you can find something in common with us. In this way, you can get to know more about different people around you.
Above all, do remember that participating in activities with others together makes you share something with them. With time going on, I’m sure we’ll know you better and like to make friends with you.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua。
