The loons为其中的第五个故事.该文讲述了一个名叫Piquette居住在保留区 的印第安女孩的故事.她是主人公Vanessa爸爸的一个病人,患有严重的骨结核. 暑假来临之际,爸爸为了让Piquette好好休养,不让她回到自己家里以免受虐,决 定带上她和全家一起去钻石湖避暑.在这期间,Vanessa和Piquette之间建立一种 介乎微妙的关系,即非朋友,也非陌路人.尽管Vanessa尽力讨好Piquette,但是P iquette的压抑内敛已经她对世事的冷淡态度,使得Vanessa的努力白费.这期间V anessa亦试图诱骗邀请Piquette与她一起去探寻湖岸上的潜水滩以及森林里的秘 密,也未能如愿.即夜,Vanessa独自外出遇上父亲,父女二人在湖边一起静静的 聆听了潜水鸟的鸣叫.从避暑山庄回来之后两人渐渐失去联系,直到若干年后,才 又在一家咖啡馆里重聚.这时Vanessa得知Piquette将为人妻的喜讯,感到十分意 外.然而好景不长,待到三年之后,Vanessa读书归来突闻Piquette的死讯;悲伤 之余,Vanessa故地重游,却发现昔日吟鸣的潜水鸟已然远离.这时Vanessa方才 突然领悟,或许Piquette"才以一种无意识的,别人完全不理解的方式,真正的听懂 了潜水鸟的叫声".
