1.Fisher comparing the following three data communication
systems.
local area networks.
A local area network is a network that connects computers within a limited geographical area, usually within a single office or building. These are the most common types of network and are connected using direct cables. They do not require modems to connect through the telephone system like wide area networks do and each time the company expends it must expand the network.
●LANs link computers within a single building or on one site.
●LANs can be linked to other LANs.
●LANs cannot span large distances.
●One of the most popular LAN systems used is the Ethernet system
developed by Xerox Corporation.
●LANs are under the control of a single authority.
Wide Area Networks.
Wide area networks, unlike LANs, cover large geographical areas.
An example would be organizations based in different parts of a city, a different country or anywhere in the world.
●Used to communicate across wide distance.
●Uses the telephone lines to communicate through a modem.\
●Is run by several national organizations, unlike LANs.
●Connection is normally through the services of service provider, for
example BT, One-Tel, Tiscali. These are just a few of the many service providers available.
The Internet
An Internet is a global network made up of a number of smaller systems. It has been estimated that it comprises approximately 2.5million individual network systems throughout the world.
The internet is world and can be accessed from any location throughout the world. Sending emails to people across the world is almost as easy and quick as speaking to someone standing next to you.
2.1 How the three data communication systems would benefit ICT.
LAN
LAN make permits ICT to share resources such as printers and LAN also could make ICT allows users to easily share files and make permits quick and easy communication with staff.
WAN
it could permits ICT to trade in a virtual manner and overcomes ICT’s
problems in communicating over distance and save managers time in communicating with staff as they can access remotely.
The Internet
Permits ICT to use discussion groups and allows up to data information to be accessed instantly and allows access to a broad range of information sources.
2.2 How the three systems would relate to the needs of ICT’s managers.
LAN
The use of groupware would allow company meetings to be scheduled easier and allows managers easier control of information within the business and communication between managers is quicker due to email and reduces storage of large volumes of data saving office space for ICT and saves time as electronic copies can be sent to users.
WAN
Access to information can be limited depending on an individual’s position within the company and saves time as video conference can be used for meetings between managers.
The Internet
Managers can gain access to information for market research on competing financial products such as mortgages and manegers can gain
