The English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary is really a good one for beginners. It has 18,000 English words and 20,000 Chinese words. Besides plenty of examples, it has many notes telling you bow to use a word. Xinhua dictionary is the most popular Chinese dictionary, and it has a vocabulary of 10,000 words. It may also be useful to some advanced learners of Chinese. Of the two, ECCED is the more expensive, costing 52 yuan, and XD costs 11 yuan.

Please let me know if you want me to buy these dictionaries.

Chinese students celebrate their birthdays in different ways, but the most common way is to have fun drinking, singing and dancing. On the birthday, one usually receives nice gifts and good wishes from friends and parents. Sometimes, parents will prepare a special dinner or a cake to show their love for their children.

Since birthday celebration is one of the importan t activities in one’s life, it can be done in more meaningful ways. For example, we can buy some flowers or cook a delicious meal for our mothers on that day. In this way, we express thanks to our parents in return for their love. (105 words)

In China, the most common way to celebrate a birthday is to hold a birthday party. The birthday person usually invites some classmates and other relatives to the party in which his family members and friends will get together and have a good time. However, I think there is another way to make a birthday celebration more meaningful, to do a good deed for m others. We can help them cooking or cleaning. Although this won’t help them much, we at least show our love for them. (119 words)

In China birthday parties are important social gatherings where friends and relatives would bring gifts to the child having their birthday. Birthday cards with warm words of good wishes are often sent. A feast is usually given to the guests and noodles, extra-long to symbolize long life, are served in honor of the birthday child.

Although these traditions have been practiced for generations, people can create birthday traditions of their own, which I think should focus on thanksgiving rather than consumption. Children should set aside some time thinking what they are thankful for and what they can do in return. One alternative is to help wash the dishes at night or do other chores for their mothers because it is their mothers' "birth" day. (124 words)
