2. Taiji (T’ai chi ch’uan太极拳): T’ai chi ch’uan, often shortened to T’ai chi or Tai chi in the west is a type of internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. It is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: its hard and soft martial art thechnique, demonstration competitions, and longevity.

After studying this unit, you are required to: 1. Have a general idea of Sports and Recreation. 2. Know more the types of Chinese sports and recreation. 3. Master the difficult words and expressions.
As a consequence, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to those aims. Some of t’ai chi ch’uan’s training forms are especially known for being practiced at what most people categorize as slow movement. Today, t’ai chi ch’uan has spread worldwide. Most modern styles of t’ai chi ch’uan trace their development to at least one of the five traditional schools: Chen, Yang, Wu/Hao, Wu, and Sun.

气功是中国人所独有的,以中医理论内容为核心指导的“调神” 的实践活动。气功在我国有悠久的历史,有关气功的内容在古 代通常被称为吐纳、导引、行气、服气、炼丹、修道、坐禅等 等。如果从中医学角度定义气功:气功是通过调神的自我锻炼, 使自身气机变得协调的锻炼方法。随着科学的向前发展,我们 可以用现代科学的有关知识来认识气功,这将更加深化我们对 气功实质的认识。如果从现代行为医学的角度看,气功锻炼是 对一种有利于心身健康的良性行为进行学习训练,最终以条件 反射方式固定下来的行为疗法。
