Jin Yong's Wuxia novels have fascinated(使着迷) Chinese readers for generations. His great works have also been adapted(改编) for many TV series, films, games and cartoons. Yet the writer is little known to Western readers.

Some believe that Jin Yong's Wuxia stories are impossible to translate. Anna Holmwood, however, has made the impossible possible.

Holmwood grew up in Britain and studied history at the University of Oxford. Her love for Chinese culture began in 2005 during a two-month trip around China. In 2009, she studied Chinese at Taiwan Normal University(台湾师范大学) for a year. In Taiwan, a friend took her to a bookshop, where she saw a whole shelf of novels by Jin Yong. She bought one of them. After reading it, the British girl was deeply

attracted by the stories in the novel. So she decided to translate Jin Yong's best-known novel, Legends of the Condor Heroes(《射雕英雄传》), into English.

It took Holmwood five years to finish the translation. Now, English readers can finally appreciate(欣赏) the novel in their native language. However, some Chinese readers questioned her choice of translation about the names of characters. For example, she chose the name Lotus(莲花) Huang, instead of Huang Rong, for the heroine.

“Lotus is a feminine(女性的) name，” Holmwood explains. “When a Chinese reader sees the name, he or she will know Huang Rong is a girl. But in the novel, Guo Jing doesn't realize this at first. That's part of his character. If I choose the name Huang Rong, English readers won't get this point. As a result, this important part of Guo Jing's character will be lost.”

Holmwood won't stop translating Jin Yong's novels. She will continue to spread Chinese culture to the Western world. She's just like a real heroine.
