What qualifications do I need?

Applicants should normally possess a first degree of at least a second class UK honours standard or the equivalent. Applicants for research degree modules should normally possess a first degree of at least an upper second class UK honours standard or the equivalent and/or a Master's degree or its equivalent. The requirement for a first degree may be waived in the case of post-experience modules for candidates who can demonstrate sufficient relevant work experience.

What entry requirements does the University set?

All applicants must satisfy the general postgraduate admissions requirements and also those of the course which they wish to pursue.

∙Research Degrees: at least an upper second class honours degree or equivalent

∙Taught Degree: at least a lower second class honours degree or equivalent, although some courses require an upper second

NOTE: Certain courses may require that applicants should possess a first degree in a relevant subject. Please refer to the A-Z list of Taught postgraduate courses to find out if your course of interest has such an entry requirement.

English Language Qualifications: If your first language is not English you will be expected to obtain the recognised English Language qualification IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with a minimum score of 6.5.

Some departments may ask for higher scores in the above tests if this is important for successful study on the course concerned.

Taught courses

As a general rule, you would normally be expected to hold an honours degree at 2:2 level or above (or international equivalent) in an appropriate subject.

Research programmes

If you apply to a PhD programme, you will generally need to hold an honours degree at 2:1 level or above (or international equivalent) in an appropriate subject.

For MPhil or other research masters programmes (eg MRes, MA/MSc (by research)) you would normally be expected to hold an honours degree at 2:2 level or above (or international equivalent) in an appropriate subject.

You will generally be required to submit a research proposal (link to writing a research proposal) with your application.

English language requirements

We are keen to ensure all our students are well-prepared to succeed. If your first language is not English, you must achieve an appropriate level in an approved test in English before you can register*. If you have not reached that level, our Centre for English Language Education provides intensive English language and academic preparation courses throughout the year.

International postgraduate entry requirements

The standard entry requirement for postgraduate study at the University of Southampton is a score of 2.1 or above in a UK Bachelors degree, or international equivalent.

Postgraduate applicants are usually expected to have completed 15 years of progressive higher level full-time education. Relevant work experience is not always necessary but it can be used to support a postgraduate application.

English language entry requirements

You will need to demonstrate an adequate level of English language that will enable you to benefit fully from your course. For most of our postgraduate courses, you will require a score of 6.5 IELTS or equivalent.

International student entry requirements

We welcome postgraduate applications from candidates offering a range of overseas qualifications. As well as achieving appropriate grades in your examinations, you also need to submit official transcripts of your qualifications translated into English and showing the subjects
