Hawthorne (1804-1864)
1. Birth and Career Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4th, 1804 in Salem,
Massachusetts. When he got married, he moved to Concord and lived there for several years with his wife. His writing was influenced both by the history of his ancestors and the views of transcendentalists. Some of his ancestors were prominent men in the Puritan theocracy of seventeenth-century New England. One was a colonial magistrate who played a part in the notorious persecution of the Quakers. And another one was a judge at the Salem Witchcraft Trial in 1692. Hawthorne was intensely aware of the misdeeds of his Puritan ancestors, and this awareness led to his understanding of evil being at the core of human life which later was expressed in his short stories and novels.
