A Comparative Study on Jiangchengzi and on His
Deceased Wife
[Abstract] Love and death are two constant topics in literature at home and abroad. Memorial works, which skillfully combines these two topics together, has become a unique genre of literature. There exists numerous outstanding memorial works in the field of literature around the world. Though dealing with the same topics, due to different cultural backgrounds, Chinese memorial works often differ from western ones in many aspects. Researching on these works may help us gain a better understanding of different cultures, and vice versa.
An objective of this thesis is to explore the cultural differences between China and western countries by analyzing two memorial poems, namely Jiangchengzi and On His Deceased Wife. Chinese culture’s emphasis on life and its negative association with death determine Su Shi’s utterly bereavement; westerners’fancy of paradise and their optimistic attitude towards death lead to Milton’s sorrowful but helpful response. Traditional oppression of women and society’s strict yardstick for judging them determine that Su Shi has to picture his wife from the perspective of her virtues; western women’s considerable liberty and the absence of value judgments on them provide Milton with a larger space for eulogizing his wife. Feudal China’s undeveloped and irrational views on love and sex result in Su Shi’s hesitation and indirectness in depicting husband-wife relationship; western world’s positive view of love and sex account for Milton’s directness and straightforwardness in portraying conjugal love.
Through a comparative study, it is found that although these two poems bear the same topic, they vary vastly from each other in many aspects such as the tones, the selection of images, the main content and the ways of expression. Further study shows that these are not random discrepancies, but inevitable results of cultural differences.
