Fuse Checking of the Control Circuit Board & Adjustment of IRV to Achieve Desired Differential

Pressure in Certain Variants of M600/M400 Helium Compressor

May 20, 2010

If an Austin Scientific M600 or M400 helium compressor exhibits sudden loss of differential pressure after operating normally for a period of time, such behavior may be caused by the following two possibilities:

The fuse on the control circuit board that provides power to the bypass solenoid may be blown; and/or

The locking nut (or jam nut) of the internal relief valve (IRV, or differential pressure valve) may become loose due to vibrations during operation, causing the preset differential pressure to shift

The following two sections provide instructions to check and fix if necessary these potential problems.

Perform diagnostics per Section I (checking and replacing blown fuse) first, retest the compressor. If the loss of differential pressure problem still persists, then continue on with Section II to perform further adjustment.

I. Checking & Replacing Blown Fuse on Control Circuit Board

The control circuit board is located inside the “Electrical Box” enclosure, and is shown in Fig. 1.

Do the followings:

01. Turn off the compressor and disconnect the power cord from the power supply

02. Disconnect the helium lines from the compressor

03. Make sure the compressor static pressure is at the correct setting

04. Take off the compressor panels and cover, and remove the cover on the electrical enclosure

inside the compressor

05. Fuse #F2 is for power supply to the internal bypass solenoid valve (see Fig. 2). Pull the fuse out

of its holder and use a multi-meter to check to see if it’s blown.

06. If F2 fuse is OK, proceed to Section II.

07. If the F2 fuse is blown, replace it with a fuse in either F11 or F12 (they are not being used at this time)

08. After replacing the fuse, reinstall the cover on the electrical enclosure, as well as the cover and side panels of the compressor

09. Reconnect the power to the compressor and turn it on

10. Record the supply and return pressure of the compressor and compare with those indicated in the manual or Installation Guide. If the differential pressure is correct, the problem has been solved and the compressor can be returned to normal operation. Otherwise proceed to Section II to perform additional adjustments
