Reading ComprehensionDirections: Choose the ONE best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.Passage OneTo be sure, only children experience some things differently from those with siblings (兄弟姐妹). Many feel more pressure to succeed. In the absence of brothers and sisters, only children also tend to look more exclusively to their parents as role models. In India, 19-year-old Saviraj Sankpal founded a support group for the tiny minority of only children. Among other things, the group does volunteer work to counter the myth that they are irresponsible. “People think we’re pampered (娇养) and spoiled,” says Sankpal, a computer engineering student. “But I’d like to remind them how lonely it can get.”Most only children, however, say they wish for siblings only when it comes to caring for aging, unhealthy parents. Britain’s David Emerson, co-author of the book The Only Child, says that such a person bears terrible burden in having to make all the decisions alone. Emerson knows from experience: After his father died, he chose to move his elderly mother from their family home, where she was vulnerable (易受攻击的) to house breakers, to a new one with more security. “The move was quite hard on her, and she might feel that I pushed her into it,” he says. “Ultimately, I am left with that responsibility.”In the future, more and more only children will likely face similar choices. With working mothers increasingly the norm (正常现象), many families are finding they simply don’t have the time, money or energy to have more than one child. As only children become common, perhaps the world will realize that the accusation made against them is unjust.1. It can be inferred from the passage that the author’s attitude towards only children is ____.A.criticalB.objectiveC.hostileD.unjust2. It can be inferred from the passage that only children’s parents should ______.A.found a support group for their only childrenB.do volunteer work to help their only childrenC.let their only children make all the decisions aloneD.set good examples for their only children3. It is quite usual now for a working mother to _____.A.spend all her time and money on her only childB.be responsible for bringing up her only childC.have and bring up only one childD.concentrate all her energies on her job5. The main idea of the passage is that ______.A.only children are spoiled and irresponsibleB.only children have to face many challengesC.most only children want to have brothers and sistersD.most only children share their responsibilities with their parentsPassage T woWhen an invention is made, the inventor has three possible courses of action open to him: he can give the invention to the world by publishing it, keep the idea secret, or patent it.A granted patent is the result of a bargain struck between an inventor and the state, by which the inventor gets a limited period of monopoly (垄断) and publishes full details of his invention to the public after that period terminates.Only in the most exceptional circumstances is the life span of a patent extended to alter this normal process of events. The longest extension ever granted was to Georges V alensi; his 1939 patent for color TV receiver circuit was extended until 1971 because for most of the patent’s normal life there was no color TV to receive and thus no hope of reward for the invention.Because a patent remains permanently public after it has terminated, the shelves of the library attached to the patent office to use and, if older than half a century, sometimes even re-patent. Indeed, patent experts often advise anyone wishing to avoid the high coat of conduction a search through live patents that the one sure way of avoiding violation of any other inventor's right is to plagiarize a dead patent. Likewise, because publication of an idea in any other form permanently invalidates further patents on that idea, it is traditionally safe to take ideas from other areas of print. Much modern technological advance is based on these presumptions of legal security.Anyone closely involved in patents and inventions soon learns that most “new” ideas are, in fact, as old as the hills. It is their reduction to commercial practice, either through necessity or dedication, or through the availability of new technology, that makes news and money. The basi c patent for the theory of magnetic recording dates back to 1886. Many of the original ideas behind television originate from the late 19th and early 20th century. Even the V olkswagen rear engine car was anticipated by a 1904 patent for a cart with the horse at the rear.6. The passage is mainly about _________.A.an approach to patentsB.the application for patentsC.the use of patentsD.the access to patents7. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.When a patent becomes out of effect, it can be re-patented or extended if' necessary.B.It is necessary for an inventor to apply for a patent before he makes his invention public.C.A patent holder must publicize the details of his invention when its legal period is over.D.One can get all the details of a patented invention from a library attached to the patentoffice.8. The word “plagiarize” most probably means _________.A.steal and useB.give reward toC.make publicD.take and change10. From the passage we learn that _________.A.an invention will not benefit the inventor unless it is reduced to commercial practiceB.products are actually inventions which were made a long time agoC.it is much-cheaper to buy an old patent than a new oneD.patent experts often recommend patents to others by conducting a search through deadpatentsPassage ThreeMost people feel lonely sometimes but it usually lasts only between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Psychologists are studying this complex phenomenon in an attempt to better understand long-term loneliness. These researchers have already identified three different types of loneliness. The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular situation, for example, a divorce, the death of a loved one or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches andsleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year. Situational loneliness is easy to understand and to predict. The third kind is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic (慢性的) loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problems socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.Psychologists agree that one important factor in loneliness is a person’s social contacts, i.e. friends, family members, coworkers, etc. We depend on various people for different reasons. However, psychologists have found that the number of social contacts we have is not the only reason for loneliness. It is more important how many social contacts we think or expect we should have. In other words, though lonely people may have many social contacts, they sometimes feel they should have more. Most researchers agree that the loneliest people are between the ages of 18 and 25. They found that more than 50 percent of the college freshmen were situationally lonely at the beginning of the semester, but had adjusted after a few months. Thirteen percent were still lonely after seven months due to shyness and fear. They felt very uncomfortable meeting new people, even though they understood that their fear was not rational. The situationally lonely freshmen overcame their loneliness by making new friends, but the chronically lonely people remained unhappy because they were afraid to do so.Psychologists are trying to find ways lo help habitually lonely people for two reasons. First of all, they are unhappy and unable to socialize. Secondly, researchers have found a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illnesses such as heart disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of man, chronic loneliness can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.11. What is the main idea of this passage?A.There are three different kinds of loneliness.B.Chronic loneliness is the most severe kind.C.Researchers want to cure loneliness.D.There is some difference between being alone and being lonely.12. Lonely people have social contacts _________.A.because they can ask for helpB.until they produce good healthC.but they think they do not have enoughD.and therefore they can get emotional support from their friends13. Situational loneliness has made it possible for people ________.A.to adjust to the new circumstancesB.to cause sleeplessness and headachesC.to understand that their shyness can not be got hold ofD.to keep fit14. “The situationally lonely freshmen overcame their loneliness” probably means .A.they accepted their lonelinessB.they were no longer lonelyC.they made new friendsD.they improve their condition15. What does “to do so” (Para. 5) mean?A.To predict situational lonelinessB.To have physical problemsC.To question popularityD.To make new friendsPassage FourI’ve been struck, living in Silicon V alley (硅谷) and spending time in other high-tech regions, by how each region can be analyzed with respect to the quality and diversity (多样性) of its knowledge producers and knowledge consumers. The classic way to view knowledge production in a region is to list all the educational institutions one can think of — universities and colleges, schools, libraries, museums, civic (城市的) centers —and to see these as the region’s producers of knowledge, with the region’s citizens, students, firms, government, and voluntary organizations as their consumers. But in most regions I visit today, there is a rich interaction between the knowledge producers and knowledge consumers. If the region is geographically compressed enough, you start to get all kinds of informal, face-to-face connections between knowledge producers and consumers —students work part-time in surrounding firms, new firms spin out of universities, employees are retrained on campus, different people go to different public gathering places, and so on. In the 1970s and 1980 we were absorbed with science parks; in the 1990s, all these connections produce what I think of as learning parks. Such learning parks bring increasingly rich intellectual and educational opportunities to their region. If top-quality schools and universities once invested money in science parks, we now see learning parks pushing resources the other way. In the relation between leading-edge (前沿) firms and universities, for example, the firms increasingly provide adjunct (临时的) professors, guest lecturers, internships (实习期) for students, vacations for faculty, and workplace experiences for scholars of all ages. So the traditional producers of knowledge (the faculty) are also becoming consumers of the knowledge that their traditional consumers (graduate students, firms in the region) produce. This is very healthy indeed.16. The author has noticed how to look at a place in terms of ______.A.the quality and diversity of its servicesB.its rich intellectual and educational opportunitiesC.knowledge production and consumptionD.investment in educational institutions17. Educational institutions in a region inc lude not only universities and colleges but also ____.A.high-tech companiesB.firms, government and organizationsC.science parks and learning parksD.libraries, museums and civic centers18. In the passage the word “park” most probably means ______.A. a piece of land in a town for public recreationB. a group of buildings housing related enterprisesC. a piece of country kept in its natural conditionD.an enclosed area of grassland attached to a large country house19. Learning parks are now helping universities by ______.A.hiring adjunct professors in leading firmsB.establishing business relations with surrounding firmsC.allowing scholars to work in leading-edge firmsD.retraining employees on campus20. The traditional producers of knowledge are those who ______.A.teach full time in a college or universityB.work in leading-edge firmsC.pursue graduate studies in a college or universityD.teach temporari1y at a college or universityV. 第四册Unit 1If you ask me, real life is not all it's cracked up to be. Twelve years at school and three years at university, teachers banging on about opportunities in the big wide world beyond our sheltered life as students, and what do I find?Try as I might to stay cheerful, all I ever get is hassle, sometimes with people (especially boys, god, when will they grow up?), but mostly with money. It's just so expensive out here! Everyone wants a slice off you. The Inland Revenue wants to deduct income tax, the bank manager wants repayments on my student loan, the landlord wants the rent, gas, water, electricity and my mobile bills keep coming in, and all that's before I've had anything to eat. And then some bright spark calls me out of the blue, asking if I'm interested in buying a pension. At this rate, I won't even last till the end of the year, let alone till I'm 60.依我看,现实生活与人们想象的不一样。

Integrated Course Book 4 Unit 8Listen to the recording two or three times and then think over the following questions:1. Where is the author living?2. What was he/she surprised to learn when he/she went to university in Toronto?3. How did he/she feel when he/she decided to stop by and take a look at the falls through the eyes of a tourist?4. Have you ever had the same kind of experience as the author did?We live busy lives with so little time to enjoy the world around us that oftentimes we almost forget it is there.Living in the Niagara region, an area that has so much to offer both scenically and historically, we forget about the diversity of nature and the fact that not everyone lives as we do.Going to university in Toronto this year, I was surprised to learn that Niagara is one of the top crop producers in not only Ontario, but also Canada. I was even more surprised that many of the people I met who were from Toronto had never seen a farm before, or enjoyed the small pleasures of picking their own fruit or going for hikes in scenic areas. I realized that I was lucky to have experienced both the urban and rural life.Intrigued by the question of how I felt about living so close to Niagara Falls, I decided to stop by after work one night and really look at them. I felt as though I was really seeing the falls for the first time, and they truly were everything that the tourists had promised. Staring into the never-ending cascades of water, I was mystified by it all. Here I was, standing at the top of such a glorious sight that I had seen so many times before, but for the first time in my life, I was truly seeing it the way that it was meant to be seen; through the eyes of a touristText AAnnie Dillard tells of her visit to the Napo River in the heart ofthe Ecuadorian jungle, one of nature's most unspoiled places. 新视野大学英语2综合训练15选10总结
【综合训练15选10】Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war?War is an ancient institution, which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always bad and usually foolish, but in the past human race managed to live with it. For the present,it is atomic bombs that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. It seems taht we will never succeed in getting rid of war. To do this,we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way,not as competitions of force.Attitudes must be changed so that victories aren’t achieved by the side which is most skillful in killing people, but according to agreed principles of law. It is not easy to change very old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.Nuclear war must be avoid. Of course very difficult problems remain in the world, but the spirit in which they are being approached is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that negotiations should reach agreements even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict nowadays can be solved though talks.【U9】Self-confidence gives us hope. It is a servant who gives its master light when he is in the dark. And it is encouragement when a person is discouraged. A person is a fool if he thinks that he is unable to carry out a difficult task while others do not find it difficult. It is neither genius nor extraordinary ability that gives us the power to deal with and overcome whatever hardship we meet. In truth it is the magic of self-trust that encourages us with bravery. Some people find most things impossible because they do not trust their own ability. Actually, they have the ability to make themselves successful, but it is a pity that they do not believe in themselves. People of this kind are more foolish than those who actually can not fulfill the work. This is on account of their ignorance. People who can’t do a job are pardonable, but those who do not believe in themselves deserve no excuse. In short, success will not come to the door of a person who thinks he is not worthy enough to accept it. On the contrary , failure would be his life companion. This is why a person ought to believe in himself.【U8】Employment became widespread when the enclosures of the 17th and 18th centuries began. It made many people dependent on paid jobs by depriving them of the use of the land, and thus of the means to provide a living for themselves. Then the factory system destroyed the cottage industries and removed work from people's homes. Later, as transport improved, first by rail then by road, people commuted longer distances to their places of employment .Eventually, many people's work lost all connection with their home lives and the places in which they lived.Meanwhile, employment put women at a disadvantage as men and women had shared the productive work of the household and village community .Now,it becomes customary for the husband to go out to paidemployment, leaving the unpaid work of the home and family to his wife. Tax and benefit regulations limit more flexible sharing of work roles between the sexes. It was not only women whose work status suffersd. As employment became the dominant form of work , young people and old people were not included. This is a problem now, as more teenagers become frustrated at school and more retired people want to live active lives.【U7】Workaholism can be a serious problem. True workaholics(工作狂) would rather work than do anything else and they probably don't know how to relax. that is, they might not enjoy movies, sports, or other types of entertainment. Most of all, they hate to sit and do nothing. The lives of workaholics are usually stressful, and this tension and worry can cause health problems such as heart attacks or stomach ulcers. In addition, typical workaholics don't pay much attention to their families. They spend little time with their children, and their marriages may end in divorce. Is workaholism always dangerous? Perhaps not. There are, certainly, people who work well under stress. Some studies show that many workaholics have great energy and interest in life. Their work is so pleasurable that they are actually very happy. For most workaholics, work and entertainment are the the same things. Their jobs provide them with a challenge. This keeps them busy and creative. Other people retire from work at age six-five. Workaholics, on the other hand, usually prefer not to quit working. They are still enthusiastic about work-and life-in their eighties and nineties. Why do workaholics enjoy their jobs so much? There are several advantages to work. Of course, it provides people with paychecks, and this is important. But it offers more than financia l security. It provides people with self-confidence; they have a feeling of satisfaction when they've produced a challenging piece of work. Some of the more obvious forms of nonverbal communication are gestures. Although we may think of them as mainly hand and arm movements, gestures can be communicated by other parts of the body as well. Emblems are one type of movements.Emblems do not need speech to communicate meaning. Putting the tip of an index finger on the tip of a thumb up with the remaining fingers pointing up and spreading out is an example of an emblem. This recognized sign for "OK" or "success" does not need any accompanying word to identify it.Emblems not only serve the substituting role in nonverbal communication but they also have direct translation. For example, a thumb-up sign means "yes" or "go". A cupped hand behind the ear means "I can't hear you." we don't walk around with our thumbs up or a hand cupped behind our ear. Unless we are sending a nonverbal message to someone. These messages are consciously sent and we must take responsibility for them. Nonverbal messages that have direct translation and exact meaning, which are directed at a specific receiver, and consciously sent, are emblems. Emblems are also different across cultures. In the United States, pointing your index finger at your temple with the thumb upright means "shooting yourself in the head". In Japan, an emblem describing suicide is pushing a closed fist near your stomach to describe the plunge of a knife in your vital organs.【U5】Job seekers are discovering that smoking can endanger their careers. Newspaper classified advertisements frequently specify that employers are looking for "nonsmokers only." One of the first questions asked of the person who applicants for the job at Vanguard Electronic Tool in Redmond, Washington, is "Do you smoke?" If the answer is yes, the interview is over. That is perfectly legal. On the other hand, federal laws forbid an employer to discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, or marital status. Many smokers may secretly welcome the company’s campaign against smoking., says Robert Rosner, executive director of the Seattle-based Smoking Policy Institute, a consulting firm that advises companies on how to formulate smoking policies. "The fact is most smokers want to quit." Many of them embrace the new corporate activism as an incentive to give up tobacco once and for all. At Rhode Island's Newport Dai ly News, it was the smokers who voted to ban smoking from the workplaces.More and more companies have carried out restrictions on smoking. These companies are attempting to help their employees kick the habit. BMC Software, a Texas company that prohibits smoking on the job, has sent employees to anti-smoking hypnosis sessions. The five sessions cost employees $30, but if they stay off cigarettes for four months, the money will be refunded.【U4】One of the more important communicative tasks may confront a traveler. That is the recognition of when a speaker has said "no." That is, one needs to be able to recognize that a respondent has refused or denied what the speaker has demanded, solicited, or offered. Equally, one needs to acquire the appropriate manner in which to respond in the negative when offered, solicited, or demanded something. It is granted that it is sometimes difficult to recognize a refusal in one's mother tongue where the answer might beunclear. However, in many encounters the meaning can be made clear. This is possible if one knows how to read the appropriate signals.A first task for the visitor abroad is to discover which forms are used to fulfill this function. If we compare form and function across cultures, it soon becomes clear that one form may be used to mean different things in another culture than in one's own. For example, in Turkish "no" is signaled by moving one's head backwards while rolling one's eyes upwards. However, to an American this movement is close to the signal used for saying "yes." Further, in still other cultures, head shaking may have nothing to do with affirmation or negation. In parts of India, rolling the head slowly from side to side means something like "Yes, go on, I'm listening." Thus, as one goes from culture to culture, form and function may not match. If a foreigner wants to communicate appropriately, he must develop the competence of sending and receiving “no” messages.【U3】A wedding is celebrated with some kind of ceremony almost everywhere in the world. The ceremony is different among different nations and different religions . But whatever form a marriage ceremony might take, it serves the important purpose of announcing to the community that a man and a woman have been joined in marriage. The wedding ceremony in the West may be a religious one performed by a clergyman, or a civil ceremony led by a civil official, such as a mayor or a judge. Or it may only be a couple’s declaration before witnesses of their intention to marry. Some young people nowadays choose their own marriage ceremony. Many of the customs associated with wedding ceremonies developed from wedding customs of the earliest times and came from many lands. The wearing of a bridal veil may have come from a superstition dating back to early Greek and Roman times. The veil is also believed to have been worn as a(n) intention of the bride’s status. She would wear it to show that she was innocent and pure. The wedding ring is the most widely used symbol of marriage today, as it has been for centuries. The word “wedding” comes from the old English word “wed”, which means “promise”.During Anglo-Saxon times a(n) promise to marry was made certain when the bridegroom-to-be gave his sweetheart a ring. The ring, a circle with no beginning or end, was considered a symbol of eternity, The third finger of the left hand was chosen as the ring finger because of the mistaken belief that a vein or nerve runs from the finger to the heart.【U2】Every sport has its great legends: soccer has Pele, basketball has Michael Jordan. Is there one athlete who people consider to be the best ever? Many would say that person is boxer Muhammad Ali, known to his many fans as ‘the greatest.’At the age of twelve, he began boxing; by the time he reached high school, he was a successful amateur(业余) boxer. After winning six state and two national boxing championships, he competed in the 1960 Olympic, where he won a gold medal. After the Olympic ,his success as a boxer continued. The man who called himself ‘the greatest’ still faced many challenges, though. After winning his Olympic gold medal, he returned home to the United States. He was not allowed to stay in certain hotels or eat in certain restaurants because of the color of his skin. Ali was disgusted(反感) with racism in the U.S., so he threw his Olympic medal into a river.Ali surprised the world again in 1966, not for his boxing skills, but with his strong religious beliefs as a Muslim. He disagreed with the U.S. war in Vietnam and refused to join the army, which all young men in the U.S. had to do at the same time. As a result, Ali’s heavyweight t itle was taken away, and he faced great toubles with the law. After some time ,Ali’s won wide support from the public and from his country’s leders , who said that they admired him for acting according to his strong, moral conviction. No other sporting legend has done so much.【U1】Foreigners experience different degrees of culture shock. The symptoms range from great to small. Some people are only ill at ease and some others are seriously depressed . Feeling homesick, unhappy, and very sensitive are other signs of culture shock. It is easy to understand that the endless frustrations of the early days in a new country would produce di ssatisfaction . It is also easy to understand why hostility might grow in a person . People are always at ease in a familiar environment. It is natural for an average person to experiences mild, temporary symptoms; the insecure newcomer suffers more seriously from a culture shock.During the inevitable period of adjustment, the international student tends to complain about everything in the new environment. In fact, the student is likely to exaggerate the problems. When the student meets another miserable person from the same country, he will pour out his unhappy feelings. Together they can complain in their native language. Although this complaining provides temporary satisfaction, it certainly does not help him adjust to a new society. Being negative will never get rid of the feelings of frustrations. The mature person understands that a positive attitude, determination, and flexibility are important in making the change successful. A sense of humor is a big help.。
大学英语2第三版重要句子及翻译
大学英语精读第三版第二册Unit 1 The dinner partyThe American does not join in the argument but watches the other guests. As he looks, he sees a strange expression come over the face of the hostess. She is staring straight ahead, her muscles contracting slightly. She motions to the native boy standing behind her chair and whispers something to him. The boy's eyes widen: he quickly leaves the room.
Of the guests, none except the American notices this or sees the boy place a bowl of milk on the veranda just outside the open doors.在座的客人中,除了那位美国人以外论证也没有注意到这一幕,也没有看到那个男仆把一碗牛奶放在紧靠门边的阳台上。
The American comes to with a start. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing -- bait for a snake. He realizes there must be a cobra in the room. He looks up at the rafters -- the likeliest place -- but they are bare. Three corners of the room are empty, and in the fourth the servants are waiting to serve the next course. There is only one place left -- under the table.那个美国人突然醒悟过来。

Are you the right person for the job你适合做这个工作吗1 In the old days it was easy. They were going to be the best three years of your life, and you knew it. You spent your time chatting late into the night with new-found friends in coffee bars and pubs, playing your heart out in the squash courts and on the cricket field, or strutting across the stage as a leading light of the university dramatic society. Whatever your interest, university life catered for it. And, let's not forget, you would usually manage to keep up with the work too, by doing the required reading and dashing off the week's essay at the last minute. The only thing you didn't find time for was thinking about what came afterwards, at the end of those three exciting years. But you didn't need to, because whatever your chosen career, the companies were all lining up to offer you a job.过去,大学生活很轻松。

in Face of Life
What do you usually do in face of difficulty?
When l meet difficulty, l usually adjust my mood into a calm and peace state. Not only it’s the first step for me, but also it’s the key step to overcoming the difficulties. Because if l have a clear mind and a positive attitude, l will think out the way to get over the difficulties. After that, I can follow my plan to solve it step by step. In a word, we should be brave to face difficulty and always have confidence in ourselves.
I think these children and their fathers also overcome some difficulties in order to complete their tasks.

What do you think is the aim of education?
From my viewpoint, the aim of education is not only teach people to have a wide range of knowledge, but also tell them how to apply it to practice. The latter is much more important. However, today’s school education in our country is closed. Students hardly have time to go out of their classrooms to take part in some interesting and meaningful activities or practice. They don’t know how to combine knowledge with practice. So, we should cultivate someone who has creative and divergent thinking. Last but not the least, educators must educate a man of good character.
