This essay will analyze Hamlet from seven aspects, that is, setting, plot,character, structure, style, atmosphere and theme. Through this essay, people who know nothing about Hamlet can have a rough idea about Hamlet and who know it well can have a better understanding of it.Ⅰ.Setting of HamletSetting is the time and place the story takes place .The main setting of Hamlet is at the beginning of seventeenth century .It is based on the Danish court life .The whole story takes place in Denmark and is concerned with the royal family of Denmark .The most important place is Elsinore Castle in eastern Denmark, where Prince Hamlet lives .In Shakespeare's time, Elsinore was an extremely important port. Elsinore is better known as Helsingoer to the Danish population and to Shakespeare enthusiasts and the English, it is better known as Elsinore. This is a true location and it serves as the literary home to Hamlet. It has become apparent that Shakespeare was very familiar with the state of Denmark as he accurately described all the necessary details of the country.The motifs of spying and deception in “Hamlet” are helped along significantly by the setting, which includes the castle itself and multiple chambers bearing scenes. In general, the close quarters of the castle provide great opportunity for plenty of eavesdropping between characters. However, a closer look at specific scenes highlights even further Shakespeare’s use of setting to be successful with these themes. For instance, the very opening of the play depicts deception and mistrust as the guards who are friends still must question who is approaching before any trust or kind words are offered. This is due to Shakespeare’s setting engaging the audience to immediately perceive a sense of dishonesty and a lack of loyalty.Another scene which demonstrates the significance of setting is the graveyard scene ,that is Cemetery. When Hamlet returns to Denmark ,he finds out that Ophelia died at the Cemetery. In this specific scene, Hamlet to espouses his existential ideas on the meaning (or lack thereof) of life in a graveyard, surrounded by bones of the dead. There is not a place more ideal for this event to happen.Ⅱ.Plot of HamletPlot is the process of the story and it involves the conflict between the protagonist and the antagonist.The main plot is that Hamle t, prince of Denmark, is very sad about the death of his father,the old king of Denmark. What strikes him most is that one month after the death of his father , his mother remarries to his uncle, the new king of Denmark. Hamlet is not happy to have his uncle as his new step-father. On the political front, Prince Fortinbras of Norway plans to invade Denmark.The ghost of the old kingappears to Hamlet and he is told that it is the new king who murdered his father. So Hamlet is asked to take revenge for the old king. In order to make sure whether Claudius, the new king ,is guilt or not ,Hamlet feigns madness. However ,at the same time ,Ophelia ,Hamlet’s girlfriend, and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern ,his former schoolmates are asked to discover the secret of his “antic behavior” and whether he is mad or not. But all these are in vain.The climatic moment comes when Hamlet plays a drama in the castle to confirm his uncle’s guilty.But when the king sees that the crime reenacted,he cries out and rushes away.This makes Hamlet realizes that his uncle is the murderer and he decides to find the right opportunity to take revenge. After the play ,Hamlet visites his mother ,where he mistakes Polonius for the king and kills him. The killing of Polonius drives Ophelia mad and also convinces the king that Hamlet is dangerous. So the king sends Hamlet to England to collect tribute ,but in reality to be murderer . However Hamlet escapes from the trip and returns to Denmark only find that Ophelia has drawn to death. Laertes , Ophelia’s brother returns to Elsinore after hearing of his father's death, and Claudius tells him to blame Hamlet. Hamlet returns, and Claudius advises Laertes to duel with Hamlet. Claudius plans to have Laertes kill Hamlet with a poisoned tip sword..To ensure Hamlet's death, Claudius intends to present Hamlet with a poisoned goblet of wine. Gertrude tells Claudius and Laertes that Ophelia drowned in a creek. The duel begins and Hamlet scores two hits. Gertrude grabs the poisoned goblet and drinks to Hamlet's fortune. Laertes manages to wound Hamlet, but in the scuffle they exchange swords and Hamlet injures Laertes. Gertrude falls and says Claudius poisoned ertes tells Hamlet he will die as well, and Claudius planned everything. Hamlet stabs Claudius and kills him. All the characters are dead and the prince of Norway becomes the king of Denmark.Ⅲ. Characters of HamletCharacters involves protagonist and antagonist and how the characters are portrayed.The major characters are as follows:Hamlet,Claudius,Gertrude,The Ghost,Horatio, Ophelia,Polonius,Laertes, and Fortinbras.Hamlet is the main protagonist and He is the son of a murdered Danish king (who was also named Hamlet) and nephew of the present king, Claudius. Hamlet suffers great mental anguish over the death of his father, the marriage of his mother to the suspected murderer (Claudius), and the clash between his moral sense and his desire for revenge against his father's murderer. To ensnare the killer, Hamlet pretends madness. Some Shakespeare interpreters contend that he really does suffer a mental breakdown. Hamlet is highly intelligent and well liked by the citizens, although at times he can be petty and cruel. Claudius is the antagonist and the new King of Denmark, Hamlet's uncle. He becomes king after Hamlet's father, the previous king, is found dead in his orchard. Hamlet suspects that Claudius murdered him. Gertrude was the wife of Old Hamlet, and Claudius after Old Hamlet died, and was the mother of Y oung Hamlet .The Ghost is supposed to be Hamlet’s slain father and he encourages Hamlet to avenge his death. Horatio is a scholar that first attempts to speak with the ghost, and he is Hamlet’s best friend.Ophelia - She is Hamlet’s fiancee who goes crazy when her father dies and Hamlet tells her he does not love her.Polonius: Bootlicking Lord Chamberlain of King ertes is son of Polonius, brother of Ophelia. Fortinbras: Prince of Norway, who is on the march with an army. In battlefield combat (referred to in the play but not taking place during the play), old King Hamlet slew the father of Fortinbras and annexed Norwegian territory. Fortinbras seeks revenge.Ⅳ.Structure of HamletStructure involves how the story is told.Hamlet is structured in five acts, each of the acts serving a different purpose thematically. In A Structural Breakdown of Hamlet, the author argues the play's five acts follow the following order: exposition, the main conflict, rising action, climax, falling action and catastrophe (Structural 2003, 1-2). The different acts overlap with respect to these categories. For example, the falling action category encompasses the end of Act III, Act IV and the beginning of Act V. However, the climax of the play encompasses only Act III, Scene ii, in which the play The Mousetrap illustrates to Hamlet that Claudius is in deed the murderer of his father. Also in the magnificent blank verse of Hamlet ,alternately formal and plain, yet somehow organic and right for both dramatic action and philosophical soliloquy.Ⅵ.Atmosphere of HamletAtmosphere is the mood or feeling that permeates an environment.Both setting and plot make for a glooming and foreboding atmosphere in Hamlet.In this play,Shakespeare opens with sentries walking guard duty at midnight on the battlements of a medieval castle where a ghost has recently appeared.It is unnaturally bitter cold and quiet .Though later the scene changes many times ,this atmosphere persists,augmented by the machinations of principals,by dramatic confrontations ,by wholesome slaughter.In the first scene of Hamlet,Shakespeare create a mysterious atmosphere, by the techniques he uses including arising questions regarding the ghost and the suspense it caused. The first scene takes place in the dark,at midnight.So the darkness of the hour is best suited to a mysterious atmosphere.Also,there are men on watch and this raises the question of "What are they watching for?"creating tension.As the drama continues, there are numerous attributes regarding the atmosphere and mood which cause the setting to play a large part. In fact, Hamlet has numerous problems that contribute to his dilemma.It is clear that Hamlet's life contains many minor problems that make up the big problem. The Ghost of his father appearing to him is what began all of his problems. His next problem is his morality and excessive thought. Also, melancholy causes Hamlet a lot of grief, mostly because of the ghost. Hamlet's Oedipus complex also adds to the difficulty that he is experiencing at this point in his life. The frustration that is being caused by Hamlet's relationship with Ophelia is another problem that he must overcome in order to reach his goal. Lastly, Hamlet questioning his own nobility, and deciding that he must die to be noble is a contributing factor in Hamlet's lack of haste in murdering Claudius.。

Horatio
• Horatio is Hamlet‘s friend and confidant. Hamlet suggests to Horatio that he intends to pretend to be insane (1.5.171172), and he relates other secrets to Horatio as the play develops. • Horatio, in essence, is present to represent the audience (Greek chorus role) on stage, to ask questions and respond to Hamlet for us. • Hamlet has to explain to Horatio about the customs of the Danes. Polonius
• • • • Polonius is the Principal Secretary of State. He is somewhat pompous and full of dire warnings. He is the father of Ophelia (Hamlet‘s girlfriend) and Laertes. There is a suggestion that he gained his office by supporting Claudius‘ claim to the crown. • Hamlet mistrusts Polonius because of his suspicion that Polonius betrayed either his father, Hamlet himself, or both.
The Ghost
• Hamlet‘s father was also named Hamlet. (We‘ll call him OLD HAMLET) • The ghost that appears to Marcellus, Bernardo, Horatio and Hamlet in Act 1 may not be that of Hamlet‘s father. It may be an evil being. • It was believed during Shakespeare‘s time that ghosts or other spirits could take on any shape they chose for their own evil purposes. • It is important for Hamlet to confirm the true identity of the ghost before he acts on what the ghost tells him or even believes that what it tells him is true.
Claudius
• Claudius is Hamlet‘s uncle and, as the play opens, becomes his stepfather as well. • Following the death of Claudius‘ brother ,Old Hamlet, Claudius has become king by election of the nobles. • He seems to be shown acting very much the king in Act 1, scene 2. Hamlet – What’s the situation?
• Hamlet is Prince of Denmark • As the play opens he has recently returned to Denmark from Wittenburg, where he is a student. (anachronism). • During his absence from Denmark, his father has died and his uncle,Claudius, has both married Hamlet‘s mother and become king. • Hamlet is greatly disappointed that this has all taken place. He is concerned over the moral appropriateness of his mother‘s marriage, his uncle‘s ascension to the throne, and his own destiny.
Gertrude
• Gertrude is Hamlet‘s mother and the queen. • Hamlet is very upset that she has married his uncle so soon after the death of his father. • Is there a suggestion of an illicit affair between Gertude and Claudius before the death of the elder Hamlet? • The crowning of Claudius seems to have taken place before Hamlet has had time to arrive from Wittenburg or very shortly thereafter. Gertrude‘s marriage to Claudius may have taken place just prior to the entrance in Act 1, scene 2. • In the original legend, she is the queen and her husband became the king. Is this part of the Shakespeare version?

• The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark was probably written in 1601. • It is commonly considered to be one of Shakespeare‘s greatest works, and, thus, one of the greatest pieces of literature ever written.
Fortinbras
• Fortinbras is the prince of Norway. • His father has also recently died (Old Fortinbras), and his uncle has also assumed the throne in place of the dead king. • Fortinbras threatens to invade Denmark in revenge and is seemingly thwarted by Claudius. • As consolation, he is allowed to attack Poland. • Fortinbras takes action against wrongs done to him. • Fortinbras serves as a foil to Hamlet.
“To put an antic disposition on...”
• In Act 1, scene 5, lines 171-172, Hamlet tells Horatio that he will ―perchance… put an antic disposition on.‖ • Hamlet is telling Horatio that, he may begin to act strangely, but he will only be feigning insanity. • He then warns Horatio not ―to note that you know aught of me‖ (1.5.178-179)--Hamlet is asking Horatio not to give him away to others by revealing that he is only pretending to be mad.
