And with bunches of grapes swinging(摇摆) in the wind, the vineyards of southern France are getting ready to celebrate it.The yearly wine festival is held in honour of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. It's a fun time with parties, music, dancing, big meals and, of course, lots of wine.French wine-making began more than 2,500 years ago. The world's oldest type of vine grows in France and always produces a good quality wine. Today France produces one-fifth of the world's wine, and some of the most famous varieties. The top wine-producing areas are Bordeaux, Burgundy and the Loire Valley. Champagne, a drink used in celebrations, is named after the place where sparkling (有气泡的)wine was first produced in 1700.Wine is made from the juice of freshly picked grapes. It is the sugars that turn into alcohol.Traditionally, people used to take off their shoes and crush the grapes with their bare feet to bring out the juice. Nowadays, this practice is usually carried out by machines. Each wine producing region has its own character, based on its type of grapes and soil. The taste of wine changes with time. Until 1850, all French champagne was sweet. Now, both wine and champagne taste slightly bitter. The drink has always been linked with riches, romance and nobleness. Yet the French think of it in more ordinary terms. They believe it makes daily living easier, less hurried and with fewer problems."All its links are with times when people are at their best; with relaxation, happiness, long slow meals and the free flow of ideas," wrote wine expert Hugh Johnson.第16题:All French people celebrate the grape harvest every September.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned【正确答案】:B第17题:In the yearly wine festival, people always enjoy themselves.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned【正确答案】:A第18题:Wine-making in France has a history of over 2, 500 years.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned【正确答案】:A第19题:Many varieties of wine produced in France are named after places.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned【正确答案】:C第20题:Different regions in France produce different types of wine.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned【正确答案】:A第21题:French wine will taste sour(酸的)in the future.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned【正确答案】:C第22题:The French people believe that drinking wine is a good way to relax.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned【正确答案】:A第3部分:概括大意与完成句子(第23~30题,每题1分,共8分)Hurricanes (龙卷风)1. Did you know that before 1950, hurricanes had no names? They were simply given numbers. The first names were simply Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc. But in 1953, female names were given because of the unpredictability (不可预知的) factor of the storms. In 1979, realizing the sexist (性别歧视的) nature of such names, the lists were expanded to include both men and women.2. Hurricanes and typhoons (台风) are the same things. If they form in the Atlantic, we call these strong storms hurricanes, from the West Indian word hurricane, meaning "big wind." And if they are Pacific storms, they are called typhoons from the Chinese taifun, meaning "great wind." To be classified as a hurricane, the storm must have maximum winds of at least 75 mph. These storms are big, many hundreds of miles in diameter.3. Hurricanes get their power from water vapor as it gives out its stored-up energy. All water vapor gives out heat as it condenses (凝结) from a gaseous state to a liquid state over fixed points on the equator (赤道). To makea hurricane, you must have extremely wet, warm air, the kind of air that can only be found in tropical regions.4. Scientists have determined that the heat given out in the process of water condensation can be as high as 95 billion kilowatts per hour. In just one day alone, the storm can produce more energy than many industrialized nations need in an entire year! The problem is that we don't know how to make such great energy work for us.5. Predicting the path of a hurricane is one of the most difficult tasks for forecasters. It moves at a typical speed of 15 mph. But not always. Some storms may race along at twice this speed, then suddenly stop and remain in the same location in the ocean for several days. It can be maddening (发疯的) if you live in a coastal area that may be hit.6. The biggest advance in early detection is continuous watch from weather satellites. With these, we can see the storms form and track them fully, from birth to death. While they can still kill people and destroy property, hurricanes will never surprise any nation again.A A Short History of Naming HurricanesB Harnessing the Hurricane EnergyC Difficulty in Forecasting the Course of a HurricaneD Huge Energy Stored in a HurricaneE Forecasting a Hurricane Through Satellite WatchingF Different Names for the Same Things第23题:Paragraph 1【正确答案】:A第24题:Paragraph 2【正确答案】:F第25题:Paragraph 3【正确答案】:D第26题:Paragraph 4【正确答案】:CA the timely (及时的) discoveryB convenienceC sex equalityD its connection with humans,E the huge powerF its uncertainly第27题:Both male and female names are used for hurricanes in consideration of.【正确答案】:C第28题:Using weather satellites can ensureof hurricanes.【正确答案】:A第29题:Energy specialists may be interested inof hurricanes.【正确答案】:E第30题:Scientists cannot accurately predict the course of a hurricane due to.【正确答案】:F第4部分:阅读理解(第31~45题,每题3分,共45分)Motoring Technology1.2 million road deaths worldwide occur each year, plus a further 50 million injuries. To reduce car crash rate, much research now is focused on safety and new fuels-though some electric vehicle and biofuel research aims at going faster.Travelling at speed has always been dangerous. One advanced area of research in motoring safety is the use of digital in-car assistants. They can ensure you don’t miss important road signs or fall asleep. Most crashes result from human and not mechanical faults. Some safety developments aim to improve your vision.Radar can spot obstacles in fog, while other technology “sees through”big vehicles blocking your view. And improvements to seat belts, pedal(脚踏)controls and tyres are making driving smoother and safer. The colour of a car has been found to be linked with safety,as have, less surprisingly, size and shape. But whatever is in the fuel tank, you don’t want a thief in the driving seat and there have been many innovations(创新).Satellite tracking and remote communications can also come into play if youcrash, automatically calling for help.Accidents cause many traffic jams, but there are more subtle interplays between vehicles that can cause jams even on a clear but busy road.Such jams can be analyzed using statistical tools.Robotic drivers could be programmed to make traffic flow smoothly and will perhaps one day be everyons’s personal chauffeur(司机),but their latest efforts suggest that won’t be soon.第31题:To reduce car crash rate, many scientists are working hard toA.design fully automatic cars.B.develop faster electric vehicles.C.analyze road deaths occurring worldwide each year.D.improve the safety of cars and develop new fuels.【正确答案】:D第32题:According to the second paragraph, most road accidents happen due toA.heavy traffic.B.human mistakes.C.engine failure.D.bad weather.【正确答案】:B第33题:Which of the following safety developments is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.Windscreens that can help drivers to improve their vision.B.Radars that can help drivers to see obstacles in fog.C.Devices that can help drivers to see through big vehicles.D.Improvements in seat belts, pedal controls and tyres.【正确答案】:A第34题:Satellite tracking and remote communication systems cna be used toA.reduce oil consumption.B.remove the obstacles on the road.C.call for help when one’s car crashes.D.help drivers get out of a traffic jam.【正确答案】:C第35题:Which of the following statements is true of robotic drivers?A.It will take some time before robotic drivers are available.B.Robotic drivers are not allowed to driveon busy roads.C.Robotic drivers can never replace human drivers.D.Robotic drivers are too expensive to use.【正确答案】:AGendergapThe girls in this sixth grade class in East Palo Alto , California , all have the same access to computers as boys. But researchers say, by the time they get to high school, they are victims of what the researchers call a major new gender ( 性别 ) gap in technology. Janice Weinman of the American Association of University Women says, "Girls tend to be less comfortable than boys with the computer. They use it more for word processing rather than for problem solving, rather than to discover new ways in which to understand information. "After re-examining a thousand studies, the American Association of University Women researchers found that girls make up only a small percentage of students in computer science classes. Girls consistently rate themselves significantly lower than boys in their ability and confidence in using computers. And they use computers less often than boys outside the classroom. An instructor of a computer lab says he's already noticed some differences. Charles Cheadle of Cesar Chavez School says, "Boys are not so afraid they might do something that will harm the computer, whereas girls are afraid they might break it somehow. "Six years ago, the software company Purple Moon noticed that girls' computer usage was falling behind boys. Karen Gould says, "The number one reason girls told us they don't like computer games is not that they're too violent, or too competitive. Girls just said they're incredibly boring. "Purple Moon says it found what girls want, characters they can relate to and story lines relative to what's going on in their own lives. Karen Gould of Purple Moon Software says," What we definitely found from girls is that there is no intrinsic ( 固有的 ) reason why they wouldn't want to play on a computer; it was just a content thing. "The sponsor of the study says it all boils down to this: the technology gender gap that separates the girls from the boys must be closed if women are to compete effectively with men in the 21st century.第36题:According to the passage, girls are victims of the gender gap in technology because __________A.they can not discover new ways to use computersB.they have the same access to computers as boysC.they are likely to be less comfortable with computersD.they can only use computers for word processing【正确答案】:C第37题:The research on girls and computers is __________A.based on a few recent articlesB.presented by one personC.based on thousands of studiesD.not considered well grounded【正确答案】:C第38题:Girls often feel __________A.bored with computer gamesfortable using computersC.it hard to use computers in word processingD.worried about using computers【正确答案】:A第39题:The software company seems to think girls would be more interested if __________A.girls had an equal chance of playing gamesB.the software was more violentC.the software content was changedD.the character were funny【正确答案】:C第40题:The gender gap needs to be closed because __________A.it isn't fair that boys are allowed to use computers all the timeB.there isn't enough money for upgrading computersC.most of the causes may boil down to a question of moneyD.the ability to use computers is important in today's world【正确答案】:DSomething about VocationIf you like to take lots of vacation, the United States is not the place to work. Besides a handful of national holidays, the typical American worker gets two or three precious weeks off out of a whole year to relax and see the world--much less than what people in many other countries receive. And even that amount of vacation often comes with strings attached. So what's going on here?A big reason for the difference is that paid time off is demanded by law in many parts of the world. Germany is among more than two dozen industrialized countries -- from Australia to Japan -- that require employers to offer four weeks or more of paid vacation to their workers, according to a 2009 study by the human resources consulting company Mercer. Finland , Brazil and France are the champions, guaranteeing six weeks of time off. But employers in the United States are not obliged under federal law to offer any paid vacation, so about a quarter of all American workers don't have access to it, government figures show. That makes the U. S. the 0nly advanced nation in the world that doesn't guarantee its workers annual leave. Most U. S. companies, of course, do provide vacation as a way to attract and retain workers. But the fear of layoffs and the ever-faster pace of work mean many Americans are reluctant to be absent from the office-anxious that they might look like they're not committed to their job. Or they worry they won't be able to cope with a pile of work waiting for them after a vacation. Then, there's the way we work.Working more makes Americans happier than Europeans, according to a study published recently in the Journal of Happiness Studies. That may be because Americans believe more than Europeans do that hard work is associated with success. So despite research documenting the health and productivity benefits of taking time off, a long vacation can be undesirable, scary, unrealistic or just plain impossible for many U. S. workers.第41题:According to the passage, the United States is a nation __________A.that prefers relatively longer vacationsB.that has fewer national holidaysC.where workers do not have paid time offD.where employers are not required to offer paid vacation【正确答案】:D第42题:The phrase "with strings attached" (Para. 1 ) probably means “ __________ ”A.with specified conditionsB.with full freedomC.with many optionsD.with work in mind【正确答案】:A第43题:Which of the following countries offers the longest annual leave to its workers?A.Germany.B.Japan.C.France.D.Australia .【正确答案】:C第44题:Many Americans are hesitant to take a vacation because they __________A.are afraid of losing their jobsB.enjoy the fast pace of workC.are devoted to their jobsD.like the challenges in work【正确答案】:A第45题:According to the author, Americans' chance of taking a long vacation is __________A.uncertainB.slimC.goodD.promising【正确答案】:B第5部分:补全短文(第46~50题,每题2分,共10分)A Heroic WomanThe whole of the United States cheered its latest hero,Ashley Smith, with the Federal Bureau of lnvestigation saying it was planning to give a big reward to her for having a brave heart and wise mind.(1)She was moving into her apartment in Atlanta,Georgia early on the morning of March 12,when a man followed her to her door and put a gun to her side."I started walking to my door, and I felt really, really afraid,"she said in a TV interview last week. The man was Brian Nichols,33.He was suspected of killing three people at an Atlanta courthouse(法院)on March 11 and later of killing a federal agent.(2)Nichols tied Smith up with tape, but released her after she repeatedly begged him not to take her life."I told him if he hurt me,my little girl wouldn't have a mummy,"she said.In order to calm the man down, she read to him from"The Purpose-Driven Life",a best-selling religious book.He asked her to repeat a paragraph"about what you thought your purpose in life was-what talents were you given."(3)"I basically just talked to him and tried to gain his trust,"Smith said.Smith said she asked Nichols why he chose her."He said he thought I was an angel sent from God,and we were Christian sister and brogher,"she said."And that he was lost, and that God led him to me to tell him that he had hurt a lot of peopole."(4)She said Nichols was surprised when she made him breakfast and that the two of them watched television coverage(报道)of the police hunt for him."I cannot believe that's me,"Nichols told the woman. Then,Nichols asked Smith what she thought he should do.She said,"I think you should turn yourself in.If you don't,lots more people are going to get hurt."Eventually,he let her go.(5)A US$60,000 reward had been posted for Nichols' capture.Authorities said they did not yet know if Smith would be eligible(有资格的)for that money.A The local police were searching for him.B Smith is a 26-year-old single mother with a daughter.C Smith tried very hard to kill Nichols.D She even cooked breakfast for the man before he allowed her to leave.E And the two of them discussed this topic.F Then she called the police.第46题:(46)填空【正确答案】:B第47题:(47)填空【正确答案】:A第48题:(48)填空【正确答案】:E第49题:(49)填空【正确答案】:D第50题:(50)填空【正确答案】:F第6部分:完形填空(第51~65题,每题1分,共15分)Crashed Cars to Text Message for HelpThere is no good place to have a car crash—but some places are worse than others. In a foreign country, for instance,__1__ to explain via cellphone that you are upside down in a ditch when you cannot speak the local language can fatally delay the arrival of the emergency services. But an answer may be at hand.Researchers funded by the European Commission are beginning tests of a system called E-merge that__2__ senses when a car has crashed and sends a text message telling emergency services in the local language that the accident has taken place. The system was __3__ by ERTICO,a transport research organization based in Brussels, Belgium.Cars are fitted with a cellphone-sized device attached__4__the underside of the dashboard which is activated by the same sensor that triggers the airbag in a crash. The device __5__ a cellphone circuit,a GPS positioning unit and a microphone and loudspeaker. It registers the severity of the crash by__6__the deceleration data from the airbag's sensor. It may also play an important role in love. But what is music, and how does it work its magic? Science does not yet have all the answers. What are two things that make humans different from animals? One is language, and the other is music. It is true that some animals can sing ( and many birds sing .better than a lot of people). However, the songs of animals, such as birds and whales, are very limited. It is also true that humans, not animals ,have developed musical instruments.Music is strange stuff. It is clearly different from language. However, people can use music to communicate things -- especially their emotions. When music is combined with speech in a song, it is a very powerful form of communication. But, biologically speaking, what is music? If music is truly different from speech, then we should process music and language in different parts of the brain. The scientific evidence suggests that this is true.Sometimes people who suffer brain damage lose their ability to process language. However, they don't automatically lose their musical abilities. For example, Vissarion Shebalin, a Russian composer, had a stroke in 1953. It injured the left side of his brain. He could no longer speak orunderstand speech. He could, however, still compose music until his death ten years later. On theother hand, sometimes strokes cause people to lose their musical ability, but they can still speak and understand speech. This shows that the brain processes music and language separately.By studying the physical effects of music on the body, scientists have also learned a lot about how music influences the emotions. But why does music have such a strong effect on us? That is a harder question to answer. Geoffrey Miller, a researcher at University College, London, thinks that music and love have a strong connection. Music requires special talent, practice, and physical ability. That's why it may be a way of showing your fitness to be someone's.mate.For example, singing in tune or playing a musical instrument requires fine muscular control. You also need a good memory to remember the notes. And playing or singing those notes correctly suggests that your hearing is in excellent condition. Finally ,when a man sings to the woman he loves (or vice versa), it may be a way of showing off. However ,Miller's theory still doesn't explain why certain combinations of sounds influence our emotions so deeply. For scientists, this is clearly an area that needs further research.注释:1.It is also true that humans, not animals, have developed musical instruments:人研制出了乐器,而动物则不能。

Not only do babies get to doze their days away, but they’ve also mastered the fine art of learning in their sleep.By the time babies are a year old they can recognize a lot of sounds and even simple words. Marie Cheour at the University of Turku in Finland suspected that they might progress this fast because they learn language while they sleep as well as when they are awake. To test the theory, Cheour and her colleagues studied 45 newborn babies in the first few days of their lives. They exposed all the infants to an hour of Finnish vowel sounds—one that sounds like “oo”, another like“ee” and a third boundary vowel peculiar to Finnish and similar languages that sounds like something in between. EEG recordings of the infant’s brains before and after the session showed that the newborns could not distinguish the sounds.Fifteen of the babies then went back with their mothers, while the rest were split into two sleep-study groups. One group was exposed throughout their night-time sleeping hours to the same three vowels, while the others listened to other, easier-to-distinguish vowel sounds. When tested in the morning, and again in the evening, the babies who’d heard the tricky boundary vowel all night showed brainwave activity indicating that they could now recognise this new sound. They could identify the sound even when its pitch was changed, while none of the other babies could pick up the boundary vowel at all.Cheour doesn’t know how babies accomplish this night-time learning, bunt she suspects that the special ability might indicate that unlike adults, babies don’t “turn off” their cerebral cortex while they sleep. The skill probably fades in the course of the first year of life, she adds—so forget the idea that you can pick up tricky French vowels as an adult just by slipping a language tape under your pillow. But while it may not help grown-ups, Cheour is hoping to use the sleeping hours to give remedial help to babies who are genetically at risk of language disorders.练习:1. Stanford University1. Stanford University, famous as one of northern California's several institutions of higher learning, is sometimes called "the Harvard of the West". The closeness of Stanford to San Francisco, a city thirty-two miles to the north, gives the university a decidedly cosmopolitan(世界性的) flavor.2. The students are enrolled mainly from the western United States. But most of the fifty states send students to Stanford, and many foreign students study here, as well. And standards for admission remain high. Young men and women are selected to enter the university from the upper fifteen percent of their high school classes.3. Not only because of the high caliber (素质) of its students but also because of the desirable location and climate, Stanford has attracted to its faculty some of the world's most respected scholars. The university staff has included many Nobel prize winners such as Dr. Felix Bloch, Dr. Robert Hofstadter, and Dr. William Shockley in physics, Dr. Author Kornberg and Dr. Joshua Lederberg in medicine, and Dr. Paul J. Flory and Dr. Linus Pauling in chemistry. The Russian novelist Aleksandr Solzhenistsyn has been in residence. Stanford's undergraduate school of engineering and its graduate schools of business, law, and medicine are especially well-regarded.4. What is student life like on "The Farm"? Culturally, the campus is a magnet for both students and citizens of nearby communities. Plays, concerts, and operas are performed in the university's several auditoriums and in its outdoor theater, where graduations are also held.Several film series are presented during the school year. Guest lecturers from public and academic life frequently appear on campus. In the evenings, many students gather to socialize in the Student Union's coffee house; here the beverages (饮料) and the atmosphere both have a decidedly European flavor. For the sports-minded, the Stanford campus offers highly developed athletic facilities. Team spots, swimming, and track and field activity are all very much part of the Stanford picture. So are bicycling and jogging.5. In addition to financial support from alumni (校友), Stanford receives grants from the government and from private philanthropic (慈善的) foundations. In recent years, government grants have made possible advanced studies in the fields of history, psychology, education, and atomic energy. At present Stanford is carrying out an ambitious building program, financed in part by the Ford Foundation's 25 million grant. Recently added to the campus are a new physics building, new school of business, new graduate school of law, new student union, and undergraduate library.23、Paragraph 2____A.Colorful Life on CampusB.Intelligent Student BodyC.School AdministrationD.Distinguished FacultyE.Substantial Financial SupportF.he Harvard Of the West24、 Paragraph 3____A.Colorful Life on CampusB.Intelligent Student BodyC.School AdministrationD.Distinguished FacultyE.Substantial Financial SupportF.he Harvard Of the West25、 Paragraph 4____A.Colorful Life on CampusB.Intelligent Student BodyC.School AdministrationD.Distinguished FacultyE.Substantial Financial SupportF.he Harvard Of the West26、 Paragraph 5____A.Colorful Life on CampusB.Intelligent Student BodyC.School AdministrationD.Distinguished FacultyE.Substantial Financial SupportF.he Harvard Of the West27、 Those high school graduates who can enter Stanford University____A.they can find the best studentsB.the university’s academic advancement and physical extensionC.some of the most distinguished scholarsD.where a sports meet iS held every yearE.must have been the top stude nt’s in their classesF.must be hardworking28、 Many professors like to teach in this university partly because here____A.they can find the best studentsB.the university’s academic advancement and physical extensionC.some of the most distinguished scholarsD.where a sports meet iS held every yearE.must have been the top student’s in their classesF.must be hardworking29、 On the faculty of the university there are____A.they can find the best studentsB.the university’s academic advancement a nd physical extensionC.some of the most distinguished scholarsD.where a sports meet iS held every yearE.must have been the top student’s in their classesF.must be hardworking30、Financial support from both private organizations and the government has made possible____A.they can find the best studentsB.the university’s academic advancement and physical extensionC.some of the most distinguished scholarsD.where a sports meet iS held every yearE.must have been the top student’s in their class esF.must be hardworking。

Laube, ACOG's immediate past president, said during a Friday teleconference. "An estimated 200, 070women will die in the U. S. this year, and over 600, 078 women will be diagnosed with cancer. The results of this survey found a worrisome ( 令人担忧的 ) gap in women's knowledge about cancer. "Based on the findings, ACOG is increasing its efforts to educate women about cancer and the need for regular screening tests.Although the survey found many misconceptions ( 错误观念 ) about cancer, 76 percent of women surveyed did say they feel knowledgeable about how they can reduce their risk of the disease. However, only 52 percent said they were doing enough to reduce that risk. And 10 percent said they hadn't done anything in the past year to lower their risk. Seventeen percent said they wouldn't change their lifestyles, even if changes would lower their cancer risk. Many women said they were afraid to undergo screening out of fear of finding cancer. Twenty percent said they didn't want to know if they had cancer. In response to these findings, ACOG will launch on Oct. 29 a new website— Protect & Detect: What Women Should Know about Cancer. The guide is designed to help women to take charge of their health and improve their understanding of their risk of cancer —and the lifestyle steps they can take to cut that risk.第16题:Many American women have a poor knowledge of cancer.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【正确答案】:A第17题:People with no family history of cancer are unlikely to develop cancer.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【正确答案】:B第18题:More women are dying from cancer than men in America .A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【正确答案】:C第19题:Most American women know too little about how to lower their cancer risk.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【正确答案】:B第20题:Some American women are just unwilling to change their lifestyles.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【正确答案】:A第21题:Some American Women are too afraid of finding cancer to undergo screening.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【正确答案】:A第22题:ACOG's efforts to educate women about cancer will be greatly appreciated.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned【正确答案】:C第3部分:概括大意与完成句子(第23~30题,每题1分,共8分)Science Fiction1. Amongst the most popular books being written today are those which are usually classified as science fiction. Hundreds of titles are published every year and are read by all kinds of people. Furthermore, some of the most successful films of recent years have been based on science fiction stories.2. It is often thought that science fiction is a fairly new development in literature, but its ancestors can be found in books written hundreds of years ago. These books were often concerned with the presentation of some form of ideal society, a theme which is still often found in modem stories.3. Most of the classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last hundred years. Books by writers such as Jules Veme and H. G Wells, to mention just two well-known authors have been translated into many languages.4. Modem science fiction writers don't write about men from Mars ( 火星 ) or space adventure stories. They are more interested in predicting the results of technical developments on society and the human mind; or in imagining future worlds which are a reflection of the world which we live in now. Because of this, their writing has obvious political undertones( 含义 ).5. In an age where science fact frequently overtakes ( 超过 ) science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Those who are sufficiently clear-sighted to see the way we are going, however, may provide a valuable lesson on how to deal with the problems which society will inevitably face as it tries to master its new technology.A.A Fairly New DevelopmentB.Classics of Science FictionC.Difficulty in Keeping Ahead of Scientific AdvancesD.Origins of Science FictionE.Themes of Modern Science Fiction第23题:Paragraph 2 _____________【正确答案】:D第24题:Paragraph 3 _____________【正确答案】:B第25题:Paragraph 4 _____________【正确答案】:E第26题:Paragraph 5 _____________【正确答案】:CA.concerned with the problems to solve in the futureB.to keep ahead of scientific advancesC.implicationD.a current themeE.read worldwideF.a recurrent theme第27题:Some form of ideal society is _____________【正确答案】:C第28题:Books written by J. Today, many Americans are still trying hard to become small business people, although only one out of two remains in operation after the first two years. Many people start their small businesses for the wrong reasons. They want to get away from the paper work of their present jobs or to exchange the responsibility of their present jobs for free life styles. But more, not less, paper work and responsibility come with ownership of a small business.Thomas is the owner of the news magazine Mother Earth, which is now quite successful. He says that he had to work sixty hours without stopping when he was trying to bring out the first issue.Thomas had waited for years after he came up with the idea for Mother Earth. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today'schildren are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children ages 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.Why are America 's kids so stressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation - brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among other things - and a growing perception thatthe world is a more dangerous place.Given that we can't turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation cope.At the top of the list is nurturing a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps build communities and protect individuals against stress. To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Yourfamily will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.Limit the amount of virtual violence your children are exposed to. It's not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvardor Yale.Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. These stories fall into three general categories: autobiography, memoir, and biography. An autobiography is the story of a person's life written by himself or herself. Often itbegins with the person's earliest recollections and~ends in the present. Autobiography writersmay not been entirely objective in the way they present themselves. However, they offer thereader a good look at the way they are and what makes them that way. People as diverse asBenjamin Franklin and Helen Keller have written autobiographies. Other writers, such as JamesJoyce, have written thinly fictionalized accounts of their lives. These are not autobiographies, but they are very close to it.Memoirs, strictly speaking, are autobiographical accounts that focus as much on the eventsof the times as on the life of the author. Memoir writers typically use these events as backdropsfor their lives. They describe them in detail and discuss their importance. Recently, though, theterm memoir seems to be becoming interchangeable with autobiography. A memoir nowadaysmay or may not deal with the outside world.Biographies are factual accounts of someone else's life. In many senses, these may be thehardest of the three types to write. Autobiography writers know the events they write aboutbecause they lived them. But biography writers have to gather information from as manydifferent sources as possible. Then they have to decide which facts to include. Their goal is topresent a balanced picture of a person, not one that is overly positive or too critical.A fair,well-presented biography may take years to research and write.36、This passage is mostly about______.A.the characteristics of autobiographies, memoirs, and biographiesB.famous autobiographiesC.why biography can be difficult to writeD.differences between autobiographies and memoirs37、Helen Keller wrote_____________________________________________________________________[3]A.a memoirB.an autobiographyC.a work of fictionD.a biography38、Autobiography writers are not always objective because theyA.feel they have to make up details to make their books sellB.constantly compete with biography writersC.want to present themselves in a good lightD.have trouble remembering the good times39、The writer introduces each category in the passage byA.defining itB.giving an exampleC.explaining why it is hard to writeD.telling when people first began writing it40、Diverse meansA.able to swim in deep waterB.similar or alikeC.varied or differentD.enjoying poetry回答41-46题The SaharaThe name Sahara derives from the Arabic word for "desert" or "steppe". The Industrial Age and EmploymentThe industrial age has been the only period of human history in which most people's work has taken the form of jobs. The industrial age may now be coming to an end,and some of the changes in work patterns which it brought may have to be reversed. This seems a daunting thought. But,in fact,it could offer the prospect of a better future for work.Universal employment,as its history shows, has not meant economic freedom.Employment became widespread when the enclosures of the17th and18th centuries made many people dependent on paid work by depriving them of the use of the land, and thus of the means to provide a living for themselves. Then the factory system destroyed the cottage industries and removed work from people's ter,as transport improved, first by rail and then by road, people commuted longer distances to their places of employment until, eventually, many people's work lost all connection with their home lives and the places in which they lived.Meanwhile, employment put women at a disadvantage. In pre-industrial times, men and women had shared the productive work of the household and village community. Now it became customary for the husband to go out to paid employment, leaving the unpaid work of the home and families to his wife.Tax and benefit regulations still assume this norm today, and restrict more flexible sharing of work roles between the sexes. It was not only women whose work status suffered. As employment became the dominant form of work, young people and old people were excluded-a problem now,as more teenagers become frustrated at school and more retired people want to live active lives. All this may now have to change. The time has certainly come to switch some efforts and resources away from the idealist goal of creating jobs for all,to the urgent practical task of helping many people to manage without full-time jobs.16The established work patterns may be changed with the closing of the industrial age.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned17Universal employment has brought about economic freedom.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned18Many people depended on the land for a living before the17th century.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned19Improved transport enabled people to travel longer distances to their work places.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned20Employed women of equal qualifications are paid less than men.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned21A large number of teenagers will quit school next year.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned22Now is the time to handle the issue of employment in a practical manner.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned第三部分:概括大意与完成句子(第23~30题,每题1分,共8分)阅读下面这篇短文,短文后有2项测试任务:(1)第23~26题要求从所给的6个选项中为第2~5段每段选择1个正确的小标题;(2)第27~30题要求从所给的6个选项中选择4个正确选项,分别完成每个句子。
