比起傳統的遊學課程，WAT 不但是費用最省、也是更能陪養獨立的一種交流活動。

代辦機構會根據學生的語言能力以及工作經驗、偏好…等再進行工作分發。

並且協助代理J-1交換簽證以及學生在美國工作期間的監督與照顧。

旅遊打工最重要的目的，是用較少的錢，去美國做勞力的工作打平在當地的開銷，甚至是賺一小筆旅費。

此計畫的目的是在”文化交流”，所以工作內容上大多是較勞務型的工作。

依照語言能力容易分配到的工作多半是飯店的清潔、收銀員、遊樂場售票員、廚師助手等等。

學生不能依照自己的喜好任意更換工作或者是蓄意辭職。

而旅遊的部份也必須在整個工讀計畫結束後才能進行。

所有工讀學生都可比照美國相關勞工法規獲得應得的福利、合理的薪資、及合法的工作時數。

學生可以自己應徵工作，或者是由代辦公司協助分發。
