A large dinner party is being given in an up-country station by a colonial official and his wife. The guests are army and government officers and their wives, and an American naturalist. At one side of the long table, a spirited discussion springs up between a young girl and an army officer. The girl insists women have long outgrown the jumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era, and that they are not as anxious as their grandmothers were. The officer says they are, arguing women haven't the actual nerve control of men."A woman's reaction in any crisis," the officer says, "is to scream. And while a man may feel like it, he has that ounce more of control than a woman has."The American scientist does not join in the argument but sits and watches the faces of the other guests. As he stares, he sees a slight, though strange look of anxiety come over the face of the hostess. With a small gesture she summons the servant standing behind her chair. She whispers to him. The servant's eyes widen. He turns quickly and leaves the room. No one else sees this, nor the servant when he puts a bowl of milk on the balcony outside the glass doors. The American understands. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing. It is bait for a snake. He realizes there is a cobra in the room. The American's eyes move across the room but he sees nothing. He realizes the snake can only be in one place—under the table. His first reaction is to jump back and warn the others. But he knows any sudden movement will frighten the cobra and it will strike. He speaks quickly, the quality of his voice so arresting that it quietens everyone. "I want to know just what control everyone at this table has. I will count three hundred—that's five minutes —and not one of you is to move a single muscle. Now! Ready!"The 20 people sit like stone images while he counts. He is saying "…two hundred and eighty..." when, out of the corner of his eye, he sees the snake emerge and make for the bowl of milk. Four or five screams ring out as he jumps to slam shut the balcony doors."There is your proof!" the host says. "A man has just shown us real control.""Just a minute," the American says, turning to his hostess, "How did you know that cobra was in the room?"A faint smile comes across the woman's face as she replies. "Because it was lying across my foot."(1)What is the argument between the army officer and the young girl about?A.Whether women are afraid of mice.B.Whether men are calmer than women.C.Whether men are cleverer than women.D.Whether women would make suitable soldiers.(2)Why is the servant asked to put out some milk?A.To play a trick.B.To serve the guests.C.To attract the snake.D.To feed the hostess's pet.(3)Why does the scientist suggest the guests play a game?A.He doesn't want anyone to panic.B.He intends to test the officer's theory.C.He sees there was a snake in the room.D.He wants to entertain the other guests.(4)What does the author imply through the hostess's final statement?A.The army officer's opinion is wrong.B.The hostess understood the American's intention.C.The American was surprised by the snake's presence.D.The hostess has had previous experience dealing with snakes.6.Have you ever heard of a pawpaw(木瓜)? If not, do not feel bad. Most Americans do not know of the fruit, though it is native to the United States.Once, however, it was one of the most popular fruits in North America. Happily, those who love the pawpaw are trying to return it to its former position in American foods. A pawpaw is a tropical-like fruit that grows on trees found all over the eastern United States. It's also the largest fruit native to the US.It is similar to a typical mango in size. It has a dull green-colored skin, and a soft, almost-creamy orange inside. The pawpaw was not sold commercially in the past. The fruit requires a very special environment-low, wet areas that sometimes flood. It has a very short harvest season, from two to three weeks in September and October. In addition, the fruit is good to eat for only two to three days after harvesting. This makes it hard to sell anywhere distant from the pawpaw tree it came from.Planters are again growing pawpaw trees and harvesting the fruit. In several states farmers haveorganized "pawpaw festivals" to reintroduce people to the food. At such a festival in Maryland recently, farmers displayed different products made with pawpaws. There were pawpaw jams, pies, gelato(冰淇淋)and beer. Michael Judd helped organize the Maryland pawpaw festival.Farmers are trying to grow kinds of pawpaws that will be easier to ship and sell commercially. Donna and Jim Davis are pawpaw farmers in Westminster, Maryland. They said that they purchased their pawpaw trees in the 1990s and now sell the fruit at farmer's markets and online.(1)What can we know about the pawpaw according to the text?A.Its harvest season lasts long.B.It grows in Europe originally.C.It has already returned to its former position.D.It used to be well-received in North America.(2)What limited the pawpaw to being sold commercially in the past?A.It was unknown to the world.B.It's hard to grow, store and transport.C.It has similar taste with typical mangoes.D.The planters were unwilling to grow them for low profits.(3)Why do farmers hold "pawpaw festivals"?A.To show lots of delicious food to people.B.To make the pawpaw known to people again.C.To introduce people to a completely new fruit.D.To tell people the forgotten history about the fruit.(5)What is the best title for the text?A.The History of Pawpaws.B.How to Grow Pawpaws.C.The Comeback of Pawpaws.D.The Origin of Pawpaw Festival.四、七选五(本题共计 1 小题,共计5分)7. Growing up in Richmond, Edlavitch enjoyed plenty of quality time with his grandfather. From Edlavitch’s young age, the two shared countless hours tending to Levine’s 1926 Ford Model A, which developed in them a working rapport (融洽) that served them well when they participated as contestants on the fourth season of Lego Masters, a reality competition show on Fox, in the fall of 2023.Edlavitch and Levine were among 12 teams chosen from over 2,000 applicants to appear on the show, hosted by Lego Batman himself, Will Arnett. Over the course of the show, the teams were tasked with creating original builds for a chance to win $100,000 and the title of Lego Master. To prepare for it, Edlavitch says, “We spent a lot of time together figuring out Lego techniques... We studied past seasons to see what the judges liked and responded to.”For Edlavitch, 21, a student at the University of Virginia studying community-focused architecture, Lego bricks build a lifetime of “play”, an essential aspect of his approach to architecture. “Lego teaches you a world perspective (视角), which is that you can take anything apart and put it back together again in a way that makes it better,” he says,“and that, I think, is what got me into architecture.”Aside from his builds on Lego Masters, Edlavitch has created a 433-brick model of the Richmond skyline and a Richmond city block. Moreover, Edlavitch says he will offer kids’ workshops that combine Lego and architecture in an approachable way, introducing the field to a new generation through “play”.According to Edlavitch, most people don’t think about architecture very seriously as a career until later high school or college, at which point a lot of these kind of old-fashioned programs are considered too late to get started, and this leads to a less diverse and less creative field. He hopes, through his builds and workshops, to model a different approach.4.How was Edlavitch and his grandfather’s performance at the show?A.Unsatisfying.B.Unexpected.C.Excellent.D.Worrying. 5.What did Edlavitch and his grandfather do for the show?A.They arranged three seasons.B.They consulted Lego Batman.C.They interviewed the judges.D.They studied Lego techniques.6.What does Edlavitch think of “play”?A.It is important for learning architecture.B.It takes up much of his study time.C.It fails to open opportunities for creation.D.It is meaningless for a new generation. 7.Why does Edlavitch decide to provide workshops for kids?A.To offer chances for them to recognize Lego.B.To develop their interest in architecture.C.To encourage them to be more serious.D.To show his talent in building Lego.Using AI, a group of researchers from Dalhouse University in Halifax have begun the work of translating the language of chickens. Dr. Suresh Neethirajan, one of the lead researchers of the study, set out to create a “universal chicken translator”, reported The Conversation.Chicken speech is actually a lot more complex than one might think. They can make different sounds, and the way they communicate with one another can be affected by their environment and age. Moreover, chickens also communicate through body language and facial expressions.Luckily, the researchers were able to use new Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to help them begin to know what chickens are saying. According to The Conversation, AI can process and analyze huge amounts of sound data. It can recognize patterns and types of vocalizations (发声). Using this information and an AI technique called Natural Language Processing, the researchers began to interpret the emotional states of chickens. Moreover, the researchers also used data video to record the chickens’ expressions and facial temperatures, thus knowing how chickens respond to something stressful.Neethirajan said that his team’s interest in chicken communication isn’t just academic. “Farmers can use this knowledge to create better living conditions, leading to healthier andhappier chickens. This, in turn, can affect the quality of produce, animal health and overall farm efficiency,” he said. The more people understand animals, the more likely they are to care about their well-being. Other researchers could use the data and methods that Neethirajan and his team have collected to begin to understand other bird species, and take care of their well-being as well.As AI becomes more and more common in our lives, it can be misused more easily. Neethirajan and his team, however, are part of a push toward positive AI use. Instead of using AI for boring goals, they suggest using AI to create a better world. For this, they should be commended.8.Why is the complexity of chicken speech mentioned in paragraph 2?A.To introduce the lifestyles of chickens.B.To explain chickens’ ways of communication.C.To prove scientists’ idea of new AI technologies.D.To show the necessity to create chicken translators.9.What did Neethirajan’s team use Natural Language Processing to do?A.Observe chickens’ facial expressions.B.Track chickens’ temperatures.C.Learn about chickens’ feelings.D.Record chickens’ sounds.10.What does Neethirajan say about their finding?A.It can be beneficial to farmers.B.It needs further testing.C.It causes doubt among researchers.D.It is harmful to animals.11.What does the underlined word “commended” in the last paragraph probably mean?A.Invited.B.Praised.C.Ignored.D.Trained.Today’s teens are still going through the same physical and emotional transitions (过渡) older generations had, but they’re also burdened with pressures we never could have imagined even several years ago—from the cruel separation caused by social media to the terrifying impact of climate change. In the face of all this, how can teens overcome these challenges? While there’re no simple answers to this question, part of the way forward is learning self-compassion.Self-compassion means treating yourself with kindness and support when you’re having a hard time, being aware of difficult emotions and recognizing they’re a normal part of life. Thismay sound like no big deal, but actually, most of us do the opposite. When something’s happened that makes us feel bad, for example, we tend to be overly self-critical, often assuming that whatever happened was our fault. In a recently published study, my colleagues and I taught one group of teens the Mindful Self-Compassion for Teens (MSC-T) program. Eight sessions were designed to help them be more supportive and compassionate to themselves. Another group learned a healthy lifestyle course that included sessions on nutrition, exercise, sleep and healthy social media use.In our study, all the teens were exhibiting some anxious symptoms. The results showed that after six months, teens in the self-compassion group were over 2.5 times less likely to develop full-blown anxiety compared to teens in the healthy lifestyle group, suggesting the self-compassion course protected the teens from getting more anxious.Although we can’t determine how self-compassion is protective, we suspect it has to do with teens developing an understanding of common humanity. In one class, a teen said, “Whatever you’re feeling, you’re not alone in it. Somebody else will feel the same way, and will know where you’re coming from.”Self-compassion won’t solve all teens’ problems. But it’ll give them a new way to approach their problems without blaming themselves. As one teen said to me after taking a self-compassion course, “You know, it’s changed the way I look at myself and the world.” And that can make all the difference.12.What do most people tend to do when having a hard time?A.They criticize others.B.They seek support.C.They remain normal.D.They blame themselves.13.How did the author and his colleagues mainly draw their conclusion?A.By making comparisons.B.By listing numbers.C.By quoting sayings.D.By presenting examples.14.How can self-compassion affect teens in the author’s opinion?A.It helps develop kindness in them.B.It can give them a new viewpoint.C.It gets them to take care of others.D.It makes them emotionally weaker. 15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.How Can Teenagers Get Over Challenges in Life?B.How Is Self-Compassion Used to Fight Loneliness?C.Can Self-Compassion Help Teens With Anxiety?D.Is Guiding the Teen Years Harder Than Before? While most people appreciate the health advantages that come from running, cycling, or lifting weights, fewer people understand the benefits that come from a good swim. Actually, swimming provides a series of specific benefits.Arguably, the most important one is that it promotes heart health. According to a research, the practice improves circulation and cardiovascular (心血管的) efficiency, so one’s risk of heart attack decreases. 16 , which raises your heart rate and reduces your blood pressure effectively.17 . To push yourself forward, swimming requires the use of many major muscle groups of the body. These include core muscles, neck muscles, arm, hand and shoulder muscles, chest and back muscles, plus leg and feet muscles, thus contributing to muscle strengthening.Swimming can aid in weight management goals as well. 18 . One public health analysis found that a 155-pound person burns 281 calories per hour swimming at a medium pace but can burn as many as 704 calories per hour swimming freestyle at a vigorous (强有力的) pace.Additionally, swimming has mental health benefits. Studies show that moving through water increases blood flow to the brain and causes a release of dopamine (多巴胺). 19 .Given so many benefits of swimming, why not get started? Some experts recommend a mix of both swimming and other water-related works when starting out. Above all, making the experience enjoyable is key to ensuring you stick with it. “Swimming is not just an exercise but an enjoyable and refreshing experience. 20 ,” says Lori Sherlock, an exercise physiology professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine.A.Swimming is also good for every muscle in the bodyB.Swimming is a whole-body rhythmic and dynamic activityC.The butterfly stroke burns as many as 774 calories per hourD.Research shows that repeating swim movements can burn many caloriesE.There are some techniques about swimming which need to be practicedF.In this way, swimming has even been shown to improve memory functionG.It can also enhance your physical health, mental well-being and quality of life二、完形填空I stared at the screen, re-reading the message from my friend, Noelle. 高二一月月考(英语)试题含答案

高二一月月考(英语)试题含答案

高二一月月考(英语)(考试总分:120 分)一、阅读理解(本题共计3小题,总分25分)1.(7.5分)As a marathon runner and regular gym fan, physical fitness was my life. All that changed in May 1997 when I survived a near-deadly car accident. After several weeks in unconsciousness, I woke up with a raspy(沙哑的) voice and no balance. I had to relearn how to sit, stand, walk and move about. Seven years of physical treatment later, I began walking on my own, though slowly and haltingly(跛). I keep a walker around for when I need to move quickly.During all these years of recovery, I remained a gym fan. As I watched the personal trainers working with their customers, I knew I was as fit as they were. So I decided this would be my new purpose. I started studying for the personal training certification exam immediately. Once I did, my health club immediately hired me.However, if you don’t obtain customers, you don’t work. Who was going to choose me with a health club full of able-bodied trainers? A medical consultant suggested I teach group exercise classes in senior homes. Over time, I’ve been able to add more classes, such as balance exercises. Balance work is so important for older people. And for me too! Now the exercises I teach are helping me as much as they do my class. The years as a physical treatment patient have given me lots of cues to use as I teach my classes.A personal trainer —on a walker? It’s not something you see every day. While my students aren’t athletes or body builders, working with seniors gives me an audience that appreciates what I have overcome through regular exercise. I’m able to encourage them beyond what they thought they could do. No longer do my disabilities embarrass me or make me feel ashamed. They have led me to a new purpose in life: inspiring and encouraging thoseI serve.21. What new career would the author take up?A. A gym athlete.B. A marathon runner.C. A physical fitness instructor.D. A physical treatment consultant.22. What inspired the author to work again?A. His audience.B. Others’advice.C. His disabilities.D. The love for gym.23. Why did the author serve the old people?A. He was also a senior with disabilities.B. He couldn’t obtain young customers.C. He had much experience in the senior health.D. He was not as professional as the other personal trainers.2.(10分)As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remembering less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the computer. The information was in a specific computer folder. Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆).”According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories: that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.24. The passage begins with two questions to _________.A. introduce the main topicB. show the author’s attitudeC. describe how to use the InternetD. explain how to store information25. What can we learn about the first experiment?A. Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.B. The two groups remembered the information equally well.C. The first group did not try to understand the information.D. The second group did not understand the information.26. In transactive memory, people _________.A. keep the information in mindB. change the quantity of informationC. organize information like a computerD.remember how to find the information27. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research?A. We are using memory differently.B. We are becoming more intelligent.C. We have poorer memories than before.D. We need a better way to access information.3.(7.5分)From July to October every year, about a quarter of the world’s blue whales feed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. But the whales currently face a major threat in their favorite feeding area. Ships carrying cargo (货物)sail in the same area at the same time. All too often, the whales’ paths and the ships’ travel lines overlap (重叠), and a ship will hit a whale.According to a new study, these ship strikes have become a serious threat to the overall population of the world’s blue whales. Only about 10,000 of the creatures still exist worldwide. Blue whales are the largest known animals ever to live on Earth. Even so, if hit by a container ship, a blue whale will likely die from its injuries. In 2007 alone, large ships killed five blue whales in the waters off San Francisco and Los Angeles, California. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says that because there are so few whales already, losing three to five from the California whale population every year is a significant loss. “The estimated population of blue whalesin this part of the Pacific is 2,500”, says Sean Hastings, a NOAA analyst. “So every whale counts toward this species moving off the endangered-species list.”Now, marine scientists must figure out how to protect the whales from the giant container ships. One very simple program is already under way in the Santa Barbara Channel, a waterway that separates mainland California from the nearby Channel Islands. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary has asked large container ships passing through the area to voluntarily slow down. Sailing slower will allow the ships crew (船员)more time to change course before hitting a whale.Several of the world’s largest shipping lines are set to participate in the new program. For every ship that passes through the Santa Barbara Channel at or below the reduced speed of 12 knots (海里/小时), the company that owns the ship will be paid $2,500.28. From Paragraph 1, we can know that_____.A. people intend to illegally hunt blue whales for moneyB. large ships often carrying goods may pollute the seaC. the container ships may hit the blue whales frequentlyD. there is fewer fish in blue whales favorite feeding area29. According to Sean Hastings, it’s inferred that .A. the number of the blue whales is decreasing sharply.B. the blue whales are still on the endangered-species list.C. most of the world’s blue whales live in the Pacific Ocean.D. blue whales are often disturbed by other endangered creatures.30. What are the last three paragraphs mainly about?A. The basic responsibility of a sailor.B. Measures to protect the blue whales.C. The world’s largest shipping lines.D. Ways to slow down the speed of the ships.二、阅读七选五(本题共计1小题,总分10分)4.(10分)How to Improve Your Study HabitsPerhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. Firstly, what confuses me most is the proper use of tenses. I often mix up tenses, leading to low scores on my writings, What’s more, I s truggle to find appropriate wordsto express myself accurately. Despite my massive efforts to expand my vocabulary, words still fail me when I need to write. In addition, I find it difficult to make my writing well-structured and coherent, which frustrates me a lot.I’d appreciate it if you could give me some practical suggestions on my problems. Looking forward to your reply.Yours,Li Hua第二节(满分25分)Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project. In a panic I quickly glued together whatever materials I could find, my hands shaking with the weight of each hasty decision. The finished result looked miserable. However, several of my classmates, including Nate, had created amazingly detailed buildings. They used materials like clay, wood and so on and their constructions were highly praised by Mr. Smith. When I saw their models, I felt even more embarrassed about mine. It was apparent that they had put a lot more time into the assignment than I had. That taught me a great lesson. I learned from that day the importance of deciding on my priorities and budgeting my time. From then on, I tackled things a lot earlier instead of putting things off until tomorrow. As a result, not only did I finish my tasks ontime, but I also felt better because I didn’t have to panic at the last minute. At the end of the semester, my work was chosen by Mr. Smith on another occasion. Seeing my change, my parents and my sister were so proud of me. It dawned on me that getting things done on time instead of being a procrastinator really counted.听力录音稿Text 1M: Do you have any idea what’s wrong with my houseplant It gets plenty of sun and enough plant food...W: Are you watering it too often Remember this plant comes from the desert where there’s hardly any rain.M: Ah..Maybe that’s the problem!Text 2M: It seems to be human nature to pursue what we don’t have. Tall people want to be shorter, and short people want to be taller... W: I know. For example, when I was younger, my cousin always wanted my golden hair, and I wanted dark hair like hers.Text 3W: Hi, are there any tickets left for tonight’s concertM: Sorry, they’re sold out. But I can put you on the waiting list, in case there are any cancellations tonight. Would you like me to do thatW: Oh, yes, please. Let me give you my phone number.Text 4M: Oh, this is so annoying! We’ve been driving around for ages, and I haven’t seen a single space.W: There’s a street party going on in town today. That’s probably why it’s busy. Let’s try the supermarket... Hey, what’s wrong with your screen It’s all dark and the colors look strange.W: Oh! I’ve been using an app called “Sunset” to help me sleep at night.M: Really HowW: Well, studies show that too much blue light from screens can make sleeping difficult. So, in the evenings, the app puts a red filter (滤光器) over the screen to cancel it out.M: Oh, interesting. Does it helpW: Yeah, I think so! I also listen to white noise, which helps me fall asleep too.Text 7M: Can we do something about the temperature in here I have so many emails to deal with today, but my hands are so cold that I can hardly type my report!W: I know. I’ve been struggling too. But the heat probably won’t be turned on until the end of the month.M: Why notW: It’s a part of the company’s plans to save energy.M: Well, I can understand that. But how are we supposed to work in these conditionsW: I guess we always have the choice to work from home.M: True. But before my youngest daughter starts school, it’s just too difficult for me to do that. I wouldn’t be able to focus.W: Then I think we should talk to the boss about what can be done, otherwise people will start getting ill.Text 8W: Well, here we are! I can’t wait to get inside and see what’s on offer!M: I heard this year’s Mini Fair is going to be even bigger and better than last year’s. They looked so real.W: Wow!M: I’m hoping t he guy who sells them is here again this year.W: I hope so! Now that I’m satisfied with the inside part of my dolls’ house, I want to focus on creating the garden. So, it would be great to get some little plants and trees. What about youM: I want some little model cars and people to add to my train station scene. But I need to find a toilet first.W: Over there, by the restaurant hall.M: Great. Meet you in five minutes, by the ticket desk.Text 9W: Hi, are you here for the tourM: Yes, I’m Michael Green. Are you the head girlW: That’s right. I’m Jayne Palmer. You look a bit older than the kids I usually show around the school!M: Ha-ha! Yeah, I’ll be sixteen next month.W: My birthday is in October, too!M: ReallyW: Yeah! So, why are you changing schoolsM: Well, my mom got a new job in this area, so we’re moving here. I’ve heard good things about this place.W: Well, as you can see, we have some great facilities... Here are the basketball courts. Then just behind them, you’ll see the football field and the running track. And that building over there is our swimming pool.M: Wow! There wasn’t room for anything like this at my previous school. I was on the swimming team, but we had to travel to use the city pool for our practices.W: Well, we’ve certainly got plenty of space. The arts teaching here is also excellent. We have a music studio and our own theater. M: Amazing!W: So, where would you like to go firstM: Well, I’m quite interested to see the science facilities. I’m hoping for a career in medicine.W: Okay, great! Well, the laboratories have all been updatedrecently, so we’ve got some really good equipment. Follow me. Text 10On my recent business trip to Shanghai, I met up with a local friend who took me out for a very interesting evening meal. At the Community AI Canteen, everything is done by robots. When you walk in there, you place your order on a screen. Using robotic arms, the intelligent cooking system then cooks your food before packing it up... It even adjusts the temperature, depending on whether you want to eat it straight away or take it home with you! To pay, you place your food on a smart cash desk, which immediately calculates (计算) the cost. There’s even a 24-hour noodle machine just outside, which offers hot and fresh food around the clock. The canteen offers a huge amount of choices and the dishes taste great. It is really fun to get “a taste of the future”. However, I’m not sure I would like all restaurants to be run by robots. I can see the benefits for busy families or office workers needing a quick lunch, but what about lonely older people who would miss the human touch I do think we will see more places like this in the future, though. At best, a human waiter can serve around 100 people in a day. The AI system can serve double that figure, making it good for business.荆州中学2024-2025学年高二上学期9月月考英语试题命题人:审题人:(全卷满分150分考试时间120分钟)第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分)听下面5段对话。

In a popular magazine.B. In a travel guidebook.C. In a famous novel.D. In a notice.BThe word "invent" comes from a Latin word which means "to find." Garrett Morgan,an African-American, was one such inventor. His first job was repairing machines in a factory. By accident, he had invented the hair straightener. He sold his products and then continued with his career as an inventor.Every day,Garrett Morgan watched traffic become more dangerous.Cars, bicycles and walkers all competed to cross the street.Police officers made simple "stop / go" signals at busy crossroads, but cars, bicycles and walkers still rushed into the crossroads at different speeds and many crashed into each other. One day he saw atraffic accident between a car and a bicycle at a busy crossroads. he realized ,the problem with the traffic light, was its poor design: the traffic signal lacked a transition(过渡)between "stop" and "go."Morgan invented a new traffic signal that added a "caution (警告)" light that made traffic move more smoothly and safely. His traffic light stood on a T-shaped pole (杆)with arms that flashed a red light to stop traffic in all directions, allowing walkers to cross safely. After walkers crossed, traffic could only go in one direction.Soon, cities everywhere wanted his traffic light. In 1923,a popular electric company paid Morgan $40,000 to make and sell his invention. Traffic lights today work in the same basic way.The traffic light is Morgan's most famous invention. In 1963, the United States government gave Garrett Morgan an award for his life-saving idea.5.What can we learn about Garrett Morgan from Paragraph 1? ______A. He worked in a factory all his life.B. A strong whistle saved farmers from walking over the hills to give messages or news to neighbors. Then came the phone.Nowadays,it's hard to know how many people still use Silbo. In 1999,it was introduced as a compulsory subject (必修学科) in La Gomera's primary schools, in an effort to prevent the language from going silent. Now 3,000 students are studying it, but only a few people are believed to be able to communicate fully in the whistling language."Silbo is said to be the most important cultural heritage (遗产) we have," saidMoises Plasencia, the director of the Canary Islands' government's historical heritage department. In fact, little is known about Silbo's origins. Silbo-like whistling has been found in parts of Greece, Turkey, China and Mexico, but none is as developed as Silbo Gomero. One study is looking for signs of Silbo in Venezuela, Cuba and Texas, all places to which Gomerans have gone in the past during hard economic times."Silbo has many historical and linguistic (语言学上的) values," Plasencia said. And,as Cabello explains, "It's good for just about anything except for romance: everyone on the island would hear what you're saying!"8.Juan Cabello uses Silbo Gomero ______ .A. in his daily lifeB. to learn computersC. just to make a livingD. only when eating at restaurants9.What can we learn about Silbo Gomero? ______A. A school's subject.B. A famous performer.C. An unusual language.D. A mountainous island.DThe Internet is a growing new world that has been developing ever since it was created many years ago. The only reason Internet sales are not taxed (征税) is because we did not know the Internet would be used to sell products when it was created. Internet sales are no different than going into the store to buy the exact same product except for the fact that Internet sales are not taxed. When buying online, people cannot see and touch the product the same way they could in a store. To fix this, customers are going into the store to see the product. Then if they like the product, they buy it online to save money on the sales tax. This is a form of tax evasion (逃税) if you ask me!Everyone has to pay the tax in the store so they should have to pay taxes online as well. Also, the added money brought in through Internet taxing could help the government to fund (为……拨款) certain policies and other things that they could not do without the added funds. This could go toward the country's schools or other things necessary for society to function well. These funds could be extremely beneficial because of the recession (经济衰退) that the country is in at this point. Internet taxing is a way to increase those funds and in turn improve the qualityof life for all who live in that country. In conclusion, there are many more positives than negatives in the argument over taxing Internet sales. I do understand that I may have to pay more if I want to buy something online, but the funds stay within my society and help my country. The added cost may hurt me at first but in the end, the funds will help me and others in our country.12.The text mainly discusses ______ .A. whether it is a good way to buy things onlineB. why Internet sales are not taxedC. why people love to buy things onlineD. whether Internet sales should be taxed13.Internet sales are not taxed because ______ .A. people don't know how to tax themB. many people are against taxing themC. selling online was unexpectedD. they are different from store sales14.What can we learn from Paragraph 2? ______A. Online shoppers find it difficult to buy satisfactory goods.B. Customers get better products at a lower price online.C. Problems related to online shopping are hard to fix.D. Online shoppers probably try to avoid paying tax.15.According to the author, taxing Internet sales ______ .A. can help improve the quality of productsB. can help the country out of the recessionC. is good for all peopleD. is beneficial to the development of Internet二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)What are the advantages and disadvantages of eating fast food? Many people do not have time to eat home-cooked food. Built. 动词短语look forward to doing sth,表示:期盼做某事,其中的to是介词,后面要接名词或动名间,所以本句中运用 replacing做宾语4. so.考查固定句式.句式so …that…表示:如此以至于.s0的后面要接形容词或副词.句意,他的第一个冰屋如此胜利以至于他设计了现在这一个.5. which.考查非限制性定语从句.本题定语从句的先行词是the present one,所以用关系代词 which引导非限制性定语从句measures roughly 200 square meters,做从句的主语.6. was removed. At,考查固定搭配,at least至少,故填at. I've learned from the newspaper my company is looking for a clerk.I'm very interesting in the job and I'd like to apply for at the position.First of all, allow me∧introduce myself.I have just graduate d from senior high school and take the College Entrance Examination.I want to find an part - time job in the summer.I'm 18years old and have a good knowledge of English. In fact,I won the first prize in the English speech competition hold in our school last year. It is the first US city to take such a strong step to keep this technology under control. When a computer system identifies a person from their face in a picture, it’s called “facial recognition” (面部识别). Many police departments use facial recognition. It can be helpful when the police just have a picture of a suspect (嫌疑犯),but no other information. Normally, even with facial recognition the police must have other proof showing that a person is guilty. But many people say facial recognition programs aren’t good enough yet. The programs can usually recognize white men. But they’re not so good at identifying women and people with darker skin. They worry that “false matches” --- when the computer thinks it has identified a person, but it’s wrong --- will make innocent (无罪的) people look like criminals. For companies like Amazon and Microsoft, facial recognition is a big business. Amazon has worked hard to sell their facial recognition to police departments around the US. Microsoft sells tools that allow prisons to watch people inside. To work well, facial recognition programs must have a great number of pictures of people. But most people whose pictures are in the systems never gave permission (许可) for their pictures to be used. Many people worry that using computers to identify or track people will decrease freedom. Now, in many places, facial recognition is used to keep people under control and much of public life is watched on security cameras. Similarly, many cities in America and Europe are also almost completely covered by security cameras. Police officers now often wear cameras on their bodies, recording all the time. It’s usually not clear when governments are using facial recognition and how they are using it.Facial recognition is already being used at airports throughout Europe and in the US. The Department of Homeland Security expects to have picture of 97% of the people flying out of the country in the next four years. As these powerful computer programs become more common, San Francisco’s move to control facial recognition is an unusual and strong move to limit the way governments use computers to watch and control people.28.Why do people worry about facial recognition programs?A.They cannot multiply people’s responsibility.B.They cannot help the police identify good people.C.They will mistake innocent people for bad people.D.They will identify black people instead of white people.29.How can facial recognition programs function effectively?panies should work with each other.B.People should have more pictures taken.C.They should include as many pictures as possible.D.Police departments and prisons should be under control.30.What make people feel their freedom is on the decrease?A.There are the police everywhere.B. A lot of security cameras are used.C. More people are forced to stay at home.D. Governments focus more on facial recognition.31. What’s San Francisco’s attitude towards government workers using facial recognition?A. DisapprovingB. SupportiveC. DoubtfulD. Optimistic5.(8分)DMany people think of the brain as a mystery(神秘).They don’t know much about intelligence and how it works. When they think about what intelligence is, many people believe that a person is born either smart, average, or dumb(愚笨的)—and stays that way for life. But new research shows that the brain is more like a muscle — it changes and gets stronger when you use it.And scientists have been able to show just how the brain grows and gets stronger when you learn.Everyone knows that when you lift weights, your muscles get bigger and you get stronger.A person who can’t lift 20 pounds when they start exercising can get strong enough to lift 100 pounds after working out for a long time. That’s because the muscles become larger and stronger with exercise. And when you stop exercising, the muscles shrink(萎缩)and you get weaker. That’s why people say, “Use it or lose it!”But most people don’t know that when they practice and learn new things, parts of their brain change and get larger a lot like muscles do when they exercise.Inside the cortex (脑皮层)of the brain are billions of tiny nerve cells(神经细胞).Communication between these brain cells is what allows us to think and solve problems. When you learn new things, these tiny connections in the brain actually multiply and get stronger. The more you challenge your mind to learn, the more your brain cells grow. Then, things that you once found very hard or even impossible to do seem to become easy. The result is a stronger and smarter brain.Scientists started thinking that the human brain could develop and change when they studied animals’ brains. They found out that animals who lived in a challenging environment, with other animals and toys to play with, were more “aptitudinal”—they were better at solving problems and learning new things.32.What’s the main idea of the passage?A.Scientists show strong interest in what intelligence is.B.A new study shows the brain can be developed like a muscle.C.Both muscles and the brain are important to humans.D.Intelligence exists in both humans and animals.33.By using such numbers as 20 and 100 in Paragraph 2,the author tries to provethat .A.exercise plays an important role in keeping muscles strongerB.exercise is more important to people than most of the animalsC.everyone can keep healthy if they do enough exercisesD.everyone should learn as many new things as possible34.Like stronger muscles come from exercise, smarter brains need .A.to be well taken care of B.a good communication between personsC.help from scientists D.our learning new things35.What does the underlined word “aptitudinal” in the last paragraph probably mean? A.Strong B.Lovely C.Smart D.Active三、阅读七选五(本题共计1小题,总分10分)6.(10分)How to manage your email inbox36 .We love it and we hate it. We need it and want it, but too often the price we pay is that. As certain as the sun will rise, our inboxes will be full by mid-morning.Honestly, we’ve done it to ourselves. We depend too much on it to communicate and as a result, we have made ourselves pay attention to every one of them. This is terrible, 37 Every time an e-mail interrupts you, it costs time, money, and brainpower. Here are some of my best tips to manage emails:38 You can’t get into work if you check emails every ten minutes. 河南省周口市鹿邑县2024-2025学年高二上学期10月月考英语试题一、阅读理解If you’re wondering why indoor skate parks are becoming the hottest trend among the young ones, just think about the incredible benefits they offer:● Safety First: Indoor skate parks are designed with safety in mind, featuring soft ramps (斜坡), padded areas, and well-maintained obstacles, ensuring your kids can skate without the worry of weather-related risks.● Community Spirit: They are not just about skateboarding; they’re energetic communities where kids can make new friends, learn from each other, and share a positive atmosphere.● Professional Guidance: Most indoor parks have experienced instructors ready to help your kids learn and improve in a structured and supportive environment.Choosing the Best Indoor Skate Park for Your FamilyNow that you’re all stoked about indoor skate parks, it’s time to find the perfect one for your family’s needs. Here’s a checklist to help you make an informed choice:● Variety of Features: Look for a park with diverse areas and obstacles that cater to (迎合) all skill levels, from beginners to advanced skaters.● Cleanliness and Maintenance: A well-kept park is a happy park. Check out reviews or visit in person to ensure the facility is clean and well-maintained.● Staff Credentials (资质): Inquire about the qualifications of the staff and coaches. It’s essential they have the experience and skills to provide a safe and supportive learning environment.● Opening Times: Make sure the park’s schedule matches with your family’s routine. Consider memberships or punch cards if you plan on becoming regulars!● Snack Facilities: Active kids are hungry kids. See if there’s a cafe or snack bar to refuel after an energetic session.By keeping these points in mind, you’ll be able to find an indoor skate park that not only fuels the passion for skateboarding in your children but also becomes a regular spot for familybonding and fun.1.Who will most probably sign up for the indoor skate parks?A.A man caring about maintenance of a park.B.A designer interested in snack facilities.C.A kid eager to go for outdoor activities.D.A mother motivating her kids to learn skateboarding.2.What can we know about kids skating in indoor skate parks?A.They needn’t be concerned about weather’s impact.B.They can play skateboards with parents whenever.C.They will gain guidance from foreign instructors.D.They must compete with each other regularly.3.Which of the following may not be necessarily considered?A.The qualifications of the staff.B.Opening hours including holidays.C.Cleaning and safeguard of facilities.D.Accommodation and hotels. It is my first time playing the game, which I know nothing about. I am not a soccer fan, and every time I watch a match, I fall asleep within 10 minutes, without exception. Before I went to The Other Green’s salon held by La Otra — a women-themed bookstore in Beijing — last month, playing soccer never would have appeared on my bucket list. I regularly do yoga, cycle and swim, which, in my eyes, are good exercises for women, while soccer, definitely, is for men.How can soccer become a feminist (女权主义的) topic? What prevents women from participating in the game? Or is it really a game only for men? Keeping these questions in mind, I step into the salon and meet five members from the Beijing-based WM female soccer club. They look wonderful, with sunny smiles and athletic figures. And their passion and confidence impress me when they talk about how soccer has changed their lives. What’s more, they all faced societal prejudices about women playing soccer and want to break gender gaps. A tough player since primary school, Xiao Da used to be the only girl on the court and was excluded from school training because there was no girls’ team at her school.Being a working mother for seven years, my life has been limited to the office and home, and when I heard about the physical and mental benefits that it brings, I hoped soccer can make a difference in my boring life. This is where the story starts. After an hour of warm-up exercises and practising kicking a ball around, here comes the match time. I try to shoot twice, miss both times and I hurt my right leg for perhaps the following two weeks. I still feel the pain. But I also feel that, for me, happiness is real on the court. Soccer is more than just a game.4.What impression do the female soccer members leave on the author?A.They’re energetic and confident.B.They’re angry with gender prejudice.C.They’re always treated fairly.D.They’re respected by others.5.What does the underlined phrase “excluded from” in Paragraph 4 mean?A.Accepted.B.Refused.C.Elected.D.Protected.6.Why does the author take part in the soccer team?A.To satisfy her own curiosity.B.To be different from others.C.To make life more meaningful.D.To escape from the real world.7.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?A.She will give up playing soccer.B.She is determined to teach soccer.C.She takes a fancy to soccer.D.She gets more hurt than happiness from soccer. Most of us like shortcuts — the ones that get us to a place faster, whether we have to walk through a few trees or jump over a wall. But how far would you go to make a really good shortcut? Probably not as far as the Americans did when they built the Panama Canal, giving ships a quicker route between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific. When it opened in 1914, the canal cut the journey time from the east coast of the US to the west coast by as much as 15,000 kilometres. This was not an easy shortcut. Panama had been chosen mainly because it was the narrowest part of Central America. But the land was mountainous and full of tropical rain forests and it was still more than 80 kilometres wide. It’s said that almost 6,000 workers died from making the canal between 1904 and 1913, but the real number is probably much higher. As well as the difficult, dangerous job they had, those workers — many from the Caribbean — had to deal with heat, mosquitoes (蚊子), snakes and lots of rain. The result was a canal thathas been called one of the wonders of the modern world.Today, a ship entering the canal has to pass through three sets of locks. These are used like stairs, and they’re needed because the canal is not of the same height all the way through. The locks use lots of fresh water to lift up the boats-on average, 9 billion liters every day from lakes next to the canal. And although Panama is a wet country, the climate is changing, and there is less water now than there used to be. The Panama Canal is still a shortcut for now, but it’s in danger.8.How does the author develop Paragraph 1?A.By giving an example.B.By asking a question.C.By referring to old writings.D.By making an assumption.9.Why was the Panama Canal called a hard shortcut?A.Panama has complex geography characters.B.6, 000 workers died each year during its building process.C.Panama always came across terrible weather.D.Unknown wildlife increased challenges of making it.10.What do you think of the locks using fresh water?A.It is a waste of natural resource.B.It makes lakes next to the canal in danger.C.It is a must to keep boats run smoothly.D.It is a good way to deal with changeable climate.11.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.Everyone Is Willing to Take ShortcutsB.The Great Canal Facing Climate ChangesC.The Panama Canal Is an Important ShortcutD.The Old Canal Lacking Water to Lift BoatsMore than 2,200 years ago, a battle between the Romans and the Carthaginians took place at sea off northwestern Sicily. Rome was victorious, defeating the other military ships and ending the war. While so much was destroyed at the time, scientists have recently discovered a shipwreck that was sunk in the battle with at least 114 animal species living on the ship’s ram (夯锤).The ram’s discovery is an important archaeological discovery. But finding it to be a host for so much underwater life also provides great insight for scientists studying how marine animals colonize (聚居) empty sites and slowly create diverse and rich communities there. The ram was recovered in 2017, located between 75 and 90 metres deep. It’s bronze and hollow, allowing it to accumulate (积累) sea creatures both inside and outside. Several years later the ram was cleaned and restored by researchers. All the marine animals found inside and outside the ram were collected, along with blocks of sediment (沉积物) and hardened materials from the same area.Scientists have been working to compare the species found in and around the ram with those found in similar Mediterranean habitats. They reconstructed how it had likely been colonized. “We conclude that the primary ‘constructors’ in this community are organisms which attach themselves directly to the wreck’s surface,” said Edoardo Casoli from Sapienza University of Rome. “Then there are ‘habitants’ which aren’t attached but move freely between empty spaces in the superstructure. What we don’t yet know exactly is the order in which these organisms colonize wrecks.”“Younger shipwrecks (遇难船只) typically host a less diverse community than their environment,” said Maria Flavia Gravina, another researcher. “By comparison, our ram is much more representative of the natural habitat. It can act as a novel kind of sampling tool for scientists, which effectively acts as an ‘ecological memory’ of colonization.”12.Why is the battle between the Romans and the Carthaginians mentioned?A.To lead in the topic.B.To draw a conclusion.C.To arouse the sympathy about the war.D.To clarify the serious damage caused by the war.13.How did scientists do researches about the marine animals on the ram?A.By creating the post-war situations.B.By comparing the habitats of 114 species.C.By restoration, reconstruction and comparison.D.By putting the organisms colonize wrecks in order.14.What does the underlined word “It” refer to in the last paragraph?A.The ship’s ram.B.The marine environment.C.A less diverse community.D.The natural habitat of marine animals. 15.Where is the text probably taken from?A.A guidebook to a sea exploration.B.An educational website.C.A government document.D.A natural science magazine. How to Introduce Friends to Other FriendsYou may find that you have two friends that you really want to introduce to each other.16 . This might be called laziness, but Dr Kleitman has a new explanation . He has proved that everyonehas a daily energy cycle .During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true . The time of the day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak . For some people the peak comes during theforenoon . For others it comes in the afternoon or evening . No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again !” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening . Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has .You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better . Habit can help, Dr Kleitman believes . Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway . If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour . This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point .Get off to a slow start which saves your energy . Get up with a leisurely yawn (哈欠)and stretch . Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor . Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before . Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your shaper hours .5. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ______.A .he is a lazy personB .he refuses to follow his own energy cycleC .he is not sure when his energy is lowD .he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening6. There is an old saying, “Friends are God’s way of taking care of us.” But how do you find real friendship and keep it?The American writer Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways to find friends. Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed and take care of it to make it grow.First, you should choose a friend. What makes a good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints and do his or her best to help. To make a friend, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives. But things cannot always be happy. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, have an honest talk. If he or she doesn’t want to talk, you could write a letter. There are three steps to being friends again:Tell him or her how you are feeling; say what your friend has done wrong, and explain why you did this or that.
