In the Netherlands, skating was a way to travel over the canals in winter.Although the Netherlands is the birthplace of speed skating, the first known skating competition is thought to ever been held in 1676. Competitions sprung up across the northern part of Europe shortly after that, but the first official speed skating events were not held until 1863 in Oslo, Norway. In 1889, the Netherlands hosted the first World Championships, bringingtogether the Dutch, Russians, Americans and English.Speed skating has been a part of the Olympic programme since the 1st Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix Mont Blanc in 1924. At first only men took part, but women’s events were in the 1960 Squaw Valley Games.Speed skatig in the Olympic Games includes ten events. Most events are held once, but the men’s and women’s 500 metres are held twice. The final result is based on the total time of the two racers. In each event, skaters race in pairs against the clock.阅读理解AIt was his summer holidays. Kevin was free to do anything he wanted to do. However, his cousin Max came to be with him one day. A team from MIT have created a new way that involves coating windows with special dyes(染料). The dyes help get the light from the Sun and then change it into electricity. The team’s discovery could change buildings into energy plants. It could even one day mean that the windows in our houses could give power to our homes. The scientists say their dyes can produce ten times more power than the traditional solar panels used around the world today. They think that this clean energy technology could be available within the next three years. The idea was first developed in the 1970s but was then given up.. Scientists then found that too much of the collected sunlight couldn’t reach the solar saving units at the edges of the window. The MIT engineers revived the idea and used coloured dyes to stop the light from escaping. MIT’s development also does away with the need for hundreds of solar cells. Instead, their method only requires cells around the edges of the window. MIT’s Professor Baldo explained: "The co ated glass would let through about 10 per cent of the Sun to light up the room, and the rest would be stored to the edges to solar cells to make electricity…It would look like smoked glass because of the dyes." The new discovery could help fight climate change.( )1. When does the new way of get electricity work better?A. At night.B. On a rainy day.C. On a sunny day.D. On a snowy day. ( )2. 外研版英语九年级阅读理解试题及答案Scientists have worked for twelve years to develop what they call Green Super Rice. The “green” in Green Super Rice means environmentally friendly. “Super” means the rice can grow well in bad soil conditions and keep away insects and diseases. Researchers say it will produce at least as much grain as other rice plants but with fewer inputs.Modern rice plants produce two to three times more grain than that was possible before the 1960s. but they also require large amounts of water and chemical fertilizers. In the 1960s, scientists created crops that produced bigger harvests in what became known as the Green Revolution. It helped many people to get rid of hunger. But modern rice plants require too much water and too much use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides that can hurt the environment. And farmers may be too poor to buy these things to grow modern rice plants. The developers of Green Super Rice do not use genetic engineering. In that way they avoid the high costs as well as the problems connecting with getting permission to plant genetic crops. Anna McClung leads a rice-breeding center for the United States Agriculture Department. She praises the researchers working on Green Super Rice. But she also says that combining many different genes into one plant without genetic engineering requires a lot of plant breeding. The research is still going on. The researchers on the Green Super Rice project continue to help farmers produce more with less.( )1. When did the scientists begin to work on Green Super Rice?A. In the late 19th century.B. In the early 20th century.C. In the late 20th century.D. In the early 21st century.( )2. What does the second paragraph tell us?A. The beginning of modern ricde.B. The advantages and disadvantages of modern rice.C. The ways of creating and growing modern rice.D. Modern rice and our everyday life.( )3. Why isn’t genetic engineering used to develop Green Super Rice?A. Because doing so can reduce the costs.B. Because scientists don’t want to do so.C. Because the technology isn’t perfect.D. Because this kind of rice doesn’t need it.( )4. What does Anna McClung think of Green Super Rice?A. She thinks the researchers should use genetic engineering.B. She thinks different greens should be combined into more than one plant.C. She thinks we needn’t develop Green Super Rice.D. She thinks it is not easy to develop Green Super Rice.( )5. What is the main difference between modern rice and Green Super Rice?A. Modern rice is better for the environment.B. Green Super Rice is better for the environment.C.

Module 9 Great inventions Unit2 Will books be replaces by the Internet?

The following are a few of her words of advice: Greet People Warmly! The worst time to think of what to say is when you actually have to say something. You can talk about current events or what you already know about the person. But you have to be prepared.”Stop Being an AdvisorThere’s a real temptation in the course of conversation to give someone you advice. The world has changed a lot in the last 150 years, but we humans are driven by the same basic needs as we were 150 years ago: food and sleep, and the feeling of being respected and loved. Now, what has affected most people around the world in everyday life is the telephone, electricity, radio, television, computer, car and the Internet. Since there is still much to do in these areas, we will still have to work on them at least for the next 150 years. Why should we predict the future? First, because we need to think about what kind of future we would like for ourselves and to pass on to the next generation. Then because we need to know what decisions we need to make today because they will give results in the future. What should we do to make the future great? The winner in life is not the one with the most money when he dies; the winner is the person who sleeps best at night. If you cannot do much for new inventions or new technology, you can do something for the basic needs of people. In order to feel good about yourself and the people around you, show them the love and respect that they need. This will help you to sleep and enjoy a bright future.1. It is said that traffic lights have a long and interesting history. In 1868, the first traffic lights appeared at a crossing in London. The light came from burning a coal gas. Unfortunately, they explored after being used for only 23 days. At that time a man was on duty near the traffic lights and he lost his life in the explosion. Traffic lights weren’t used again until 1914. People started to replace coal gas with electricity.Nowadays in England, in order to make the traffic smoother and reduce pollution, the government encourages people to travel by bus. In some cities, the bus drivers have special remote controls. When they come to crossings, they can control the traffic lights by themselves. The population in the Repblic of San Marino is only about twenty thousand, but there are five thousand vehicles. To everyone’s surprise, there aren’t any traffic lights there. As a result of good road design and scientific methods of managing traffic, the traffic is quite smooth. Now, Moscow is getting ready to set up traffic lights that can speak. During one of my lessons, he asked me, “Do you practise in stretches, an hour at a time?” “I try to.” I replied. “Well, don’t,” he exclaimed, “When you grow up, time won’t come in long periods of time. Practise in minutes, whenever you can find them five or ten before school after lunch, between household tasks. Spread the practice through the day, and piano-playing will become a part of your life.”When I was teaching at Columbia University, I wanted to write, but class periods, reading, and meetings filled my days and evenings. For two years I got nothing down on paper, and my excuse was that I had no time. Then I remembered what Carl Walter had said. During the next week I did an experiment.Whenever I had five minutes available, I sat down and wrote a hundred words or so. To my surprise, at the end of the week I had written down quite a lot, later on I wrote novels by the same piecemeal (零碎的) method.Though my teaching schedule had become heavier than ever, in every day there were short periods of time which could be caught and put to use. I even took up piano-playing again, finding those short periods of time of the day provided enough time for both writing and piano practice. You must get prepared and highly focus on your task when the time comes. Carl Walter has had a great influence on my life. His popular sayings, like “to be or not to be, that is a question”, and his stories such as the tragedy (悲剧), Romance of Romeo and Juliet, are almost known in every comer of the world.By 1594, William Shakespeare had become a key playwright of a popular acting company in the city. However, I think this is a huge mistake. Learning new things at any age is important and it can help us become better.Take myself as an example. I didn’t start playing ice hockey until I was more than 40 years old. My son is a huge sports fan and he often asked me to take him to watch games between the big teams. Gradually, I fell in love with the sport, and after a few months, I decided to have a try.To be honest, it is the hardest sport I’ve ever done. There was so much to learn. In addition to mastering skating skills, I also needed to learn how to pass and shoot. I saw a lot of players get on the ice and pick it up quickly and easily. But I was an exception (例外). I was so terrible at skating but I never thought about giving up. So I took a skating training course, then joined a hockey team and practiced hard in my free time. I finally mastered the skill, though it took me a really long time.Learning hockey has also helped me be a better teacher in some way. Being bad at hockey helps me to understand those students in my class who have difficulty in learning English. I’m not stupid—it just takes me longer to learn and practice a skill before I’m able to do it. Some students are like that too—they might need to hear an explanation (解释) 3 to 4 times or need a few more days of practice. It’s good to learn new things, whether they come easily to you or with more difficulty. Maybe you didn’t use the past year to improve yourself or to learn a new skill—but that’s OK! It won’t be late to start anything at any time. 51.The huge mistake in Paragraph 1 refers to ________.A.learning sports with children B.playing ice hockey at a young ageC.keeping students trying new things D.stopping learning new things because of age52.What did the author think of ice hockey at first?A.Easy.B.Boring.C.Difficult.D.Exciting.53.The author could be a(n) ________ teacher at school.A.art B.PE C.music D.English54.According to Paragraphs 3 and 4, what does the author want to tell to the students?①Practice makes perfect. ②Be patient with yourselves. ③Actions speak louder than words.A.①②B.①③C.②③D.①②③55.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A.To explain some rules of playing ice hockey.B.To encourage people to try new things.C.To call on people to take exercise.D.To teach how to learn English.(2022秋·广东江门·九年级校考期中)I think April Fool’s Day (愚人节) is a very unusual holiday. On April Fool’s Day, you have to watch out for practical jokes. You also can’t trust everything you hear on April 1st. Even some main newspapers will put fake news to fool people. I heard a story about how on April Fool’s Day, a London newspaper printed an article about how aliens (外星人) landed in England. This caused many people to be afraid andthe local police were not very pleased with the newspaper. It can be interesting to play tricks, but you’d better not to go too far. One April Fool’s Day, I called my mother from the university I attended. I told her that I failed all of my exams and because of this, I wasn’t able to graduate. She was so worried that she started to cry. I felt really bad about making her sad and tried to tell her it was just a joke. After I told her it was only an April Fool’s Day’s joke, she got angry with me that she hung up the phone. I had to call her back and apologize before she would talk to me again.April Fool’s Day’s jokes can be funny, but you should be careful not to hurt people’s feelings and embarrass (使尴尬) them too much. Before you act, you should always make sure to put yourself in others’ shoes and think about how they might feel.56.What can’t be trusted on April fool’s day?A.Everything you hear.B.Strangers’ jokes.C.Friends’ jokes.D.Everything on TV.A.unknown B.unhealthy C.unhappy D.unreal58.When the writer called his mother on April Fool’s Day, what was the writer?A.A worker.B.A student.C.A teacher.D.A reporter.59.Which is the following is TRUE?A.Once aliens landed in England.B.April Fool’s Day is a usual holiday.C.The mother felt upset when she got the call.D.You can do anything to fool your friends on April Fool’s Day.60.What does the passage mainly tell us?A.Don’t play jokes on your friends.B.It’s bad for newspapers to put fake news.C.Children shouldn’t play jokes on their mothers.D.Don’t hurt people’s feelings when playing jokes on April Fool’s Day.(2022秋·广东佛山·九年级校考期中)I hired a man to repair my old farmhouse.
