trips. If students are covering the Civil War in social studies, they're reading The Red Badge of Courage or some other period literature in English class. In science, they study the viruses and bacteria that caused many deaths in the war. Team teaching isn't unusual.About 77 percent of middle schools now employ some form of it,says John Lounsbury, consulting editor for the National Middle School Association. But most schools use fouror fiveperson teams, which Gaul tried before considering twoperson teams more effective.Gaul supports the team concept by “looping” classes (跟班) so that the same two teachers stick with the same teens through seventh and eighth bining teams and looping creates an extremely strong bond between teacher and student. It also, says teacher Beth Ahlholm,“allows us to build an excellent relationship with parents.” Ahlholm and teammate Madelon Kelly are fully aware how many glazed looks they see in the classroom, but they know 72 percent of their eighthgraders met Maine's reading standard last year—double the statewide average.Only 31 percent met the math standard, still better than the state average (21 percent).Their students also beat the state average in writing and science. And in 2006,Gaul was one of 47 schools in the state to see testing gains of at least 20 percent in four of the previous five years, coinciding roughly with team teaching's arrival.

A new study of animal‘s emotions suggests that, as in humans, emotions can tell animals about how dangerous their world is, and guide the choices that they make. The article of the study by Bri stol University‘s professor Mike Mendl was published online. An animal living in an environment where it is often threatened by predators(捕食者)will develop a negative emotion or ―mood‖, such as anxiety. However, one in an environment with plenty of opportunities to get resources for survival will be in a more positive mood state. The researchers say that these emotional states not only show the animal‘s experiences, but also help it decide how to make choices, especially in unclear situations. This could have good or bad results. An animal in a negative mood state will make a safety-first with a ―pessimistic‖ response to an unclear event. For example, it considers a noise in the grass as a signal of the predator. At the same time, an animal in a positive m ood state will benefit from a more ―optimistic‖ response. It considers the noise as a signal of prey(猎物).Professor Mike Mendl, head of the Animal Welfare and Behavior Research Group at Bristol University‘s School of Clinical Veterinary Science said, ― We can use ―optimistic‖ or―pessimistic‖decision-making as a symbol of an animal‘s emotional state. Recent studies by our group and others suggest that this is a meritorious new approach to studying a variety of animal species.‖―Public interest in anim al welfare remains high, with widespread concern about the way in which animals are treated, used and included in society. To understand how animals should be treated, we need to better understand their emotional lives,‖ Mike Mendl said. The researchers be lieve Mike Mendl‘s study can help them to better understand and assess an animal‘s emotions.66.When an animal is in a negative mood state, _______.A. its response to an unclear event is pessimisticB. it will pay little attention to an unclear eventC. it is easy for it to make right decisionsD. it has more opportunities to get food67.The underlined word ―meritorious‖ in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by ―_______‖.A. valuableB. uselessC. fashionableD. hopeless68. We can infer from the passage that ________.A. the animals with positive emotions live longerB. there is no way to assess an animal‘s emotionsC. few people care about animal welfare nowadaysD. the environment can influence animal‘s emotions69.Mike Mendl advised people to better understand animal‘s emotions in order to _____.A. tell people to build more protected areas for animalsB. explain animals should be regarded as people‘s friendsC. raise people‘s interest in studying anima lsD. make people know how to treat animals properly70. People use credit card to go shopping on the Internet, check into a hotel, rent a car, or dine out. People can buy now and pay later. A credit card may have a number of costs. First, there is the interest charge on purchase, known as the annual percentage rate. Second, Cardholders may have to pay cash advance fees if they withdraw money from credit cards.Compared to checks, a credit card allows small short – term loans to be quickly made to a customer who need not calculate a balance remaining before every transaction(交易、业务). Additionally there is no need for a customer to carry any cash for most purposes. Credit cards also offer consumers an easy way to track expenses.Credit cards are very convenient to use. But people who use credit cards irresponsibly can soon find themselves heavily in debt. Cardholders borrow money from a bank each time they charge something. They avoid interest charges if they pay their bill in full each month. But if they only make the minimum payment, it may take years to pay off a debt. Interest is continually charged on the unpaid balance. And that is not they only danger. Information security is a major issue these days. Recently there have been several incidents in which many people had financial information either lost or stolen. The cardholder suffered great losses. Now, major banks in China get more cautions in issuing caused by the card overdrafts(透支).Measures can be taken to avoid the problems. A lost or stolen card can be canceled in time, which will greatly limit the fraud. European banks require a cardholder‘s security code he entered for purchases with the card. She loved them very much, but two girls would fight with each other from their earliest years. As they grew older, they became total strangers. They had no contact with each other when they were adults. This caused the mother great pain. Then, later, she had an idea. She decided to write a letter to them. In this letter, she told them how much she loved them, and how she wanted them to love each other in this way. She also gave them news of herself, and some guidance on how they might live happier lives. When the letter was ready, she wrote out one copy for each daughter, but these copies were special. Each copy contained only every second sentence of the original letter. The copy for one daughter had only the even(偶数的) sentences, and the other daughter‟s copy contained only the odd sentences. Neither copy made sense on its own. Neither contained the fullness of the mother‟s message. When the two daughters received their letters, they were puzzled. If they really wanted to know what the letters said, they would have to put the two letters together, and read them as one. That meant they must approach one another again in mutual(彼此的) love and respect. For a long time, the mother waited in vain. Both daughters tried to understand the half-letter, but they each blamed the other for not helping them. Each daughter thought she knew her mother better. Then one day, when the mother had almost given up hope, there was a knock at the door. There they stood, together. “We‟ve come home,” they said at the same time. “We‟ve finally put our letters together, and we‟ve come to say how much we love you, Mum.” Then she hugged them both, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks, and welcomed them back home.56. When the two daughters were young, they____.A. had no contact with each otherB. disliked each otherC. showed deep love for each otherD. did not love their mother57. Why did the mother give her daughters incomplete letters?A. She wanted to tell them her good news and bad news.B. She hoped they would ask her for more information.C. They argued that the only way to restore willpower was by rest, food or entertainment. But psychologists have challenged this theory, saying weak willpower is all in your head. They found that people‟s beliefs in willpower determi ne how long and how well they'll be able to work on a tough mental exercise. “If you think of willpower as something that‟s limited, you're more likely to be tired when you perform a difficult task," said Prof. Veronika Job. “But if you think of willpower as something that is not easily used up, you can go on and on.”.The researchers designed four experiments to test students'-beliefs in willpower. After a tiring task, those, who believed or were led to believe that willpower is a limited resource, performed worse on standard concentration tests than those who thought of willpower as something they had more control over. They also found that leading up to final exam week, students who believed the limited resource theory ate junk food 24 percent more often than those who believed they had more control in resisting temptation (诱惑).Mr. Job said. “The theory that willpower is a limited resource is interesting, but it has had unintended consequences. Students who may already have trouble studying are being told that their power of concentration is limited, and they need to take frequent breaks. But a belief in willpower as a non-limited resource makes people stronger in their ability to work through challenges.”The findings could help people who are battlin g temptation. Willpower isn‟t driven by a biologically based process as much as we used to think. The belief in it is what influences your behavior.66. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.Scientists, doctors and mental health professionals have been studying the connection between color and mood for years. Many now believe that colors can not only cause emotional reactions, but can also correct mood. Colors behave in three basic ways: active, passive and neutral (中和的).Active colors are warm colors, including yellow, orange and red. These colors bring confidence. Warm colors can also bring cheerful attitudes. Yellows and golden colors work well in offices, kitchens and study areas. Reds heat up a room. Passive colors or cool colors make people calm, quiet and satisfied. Bedrooms, private areas and bathrooms are great places for blues and greens. Beige, gray and white are thought of as neutral colors. They help to put the focus on other colors or serve to tone down (使柔和) colors that might otherwise be overpowering on their own.You can easily change the look or feel of a room by making good use of different colors. Mixing and matching colors is an excellent way to balance color and emotion, and provide a welcoming feel for guests. To create a feeling of warmth and comfort in a room, use bright, warm colors like yellow, orange and red. These colors are good choices for rooms that appear cool due to limited sunlight. Yellow adds cheerfulness to dull rooms. You can add yellows to rooms which are not closely related to happy thoughts, such as kitchens and laundry room. In rooms where there‟s plenty of sunshine, cool colors can provide a calming environment. Sage greens and sky blues are perfect for bedrooms, playrooms and activity areas. Neutral colors, such as pale gray, white and beige, send a peaceful message to your brain. It‟s not a coincidence that most doctor‟s offices, coffee shops and mental health centers are decorated in neutrals. To make your wall color choices better, pick out furniture that will provide a visual contrast. Cool colors make a room seem larger than it is and warm colors make rooms feel smaller.Title: The Connection Between 71.____________Commonly believed effects of colors ●causing emotional reactions ●72.__________________73._________________of colors and their effects 74._______________●bringing confidence and 75.________________ passive colors●making people calm, 76.________________ neutral colors●helping to put the focus on other colors or tone downoverpowering colors.77._________________to balance color and emotion ●using bright, warm colors to make a dim or dull roomwarm and 78.____________________●using cool colors to create a calming environment in abright room●79.______________to send a peaceful messageTip on picking out furniture Picking out furniture that will give a visual contrast to80.______________ wall color choices.Section B (10 marks)Directions:Read the following passage. 定时训练(19)专题特训(阅读简答)Passage 1Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor.Whenever I speak to Chinese students they always say,“My spoken English is poor.”However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor”.I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary.Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary,if your attitude is positive.Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous.Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY.Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However,in speaking, your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across,to talk to someone in English as quickly and well as you can even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense. But it doesn't matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears. The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners.Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor.If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.If you do not use your English beyond the classroom you will forget that English you know.Remember: USE IT OR LOSE IT! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more.1.According to the passage, what do many Chinese students think of their English?(No more than 12 words)________________________________________________________________________ 答案They think their grammar is good, while spoken English is poor.2.Why can't some Chinese students find suitable words to express themselves? (No more than 6 words)________________________________________________________________________ 答案Because of/Due to a limited vocabulary.3.According to the writer, what should be the goal when you talk with others in English? (No more than 1 word)________________________________________________________________________ 答案Fluency.4.By “proactive language learners”,what does the writer mean? (No more than 12 words)________________________________________________________________________答案Students actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English./A student should actively seek out opportunities to improve his spoken English.Passage 2You may ride on your bicycle in a rush to get to school every morning. You may fight to get a bit of space on a bus or on the subway. You may also watch taxis crawl their way through traffic jams.No matter where you are,all big cities around the world have traffic jams these days.Although they all have their problems, many cities also have a type of transportation that has become a cultural icon.In London,to avoid the traffic above ground, people use the “underground”,also called the “tube”.The city has the oldest and most complicated underground railway system in the world and it is the pride of many Londoners. With 12 lines and 275 stations across the city, the tube is normally the quickest and easiest way of getting around London. In London, you are never far from a tube station.New York is famous for its yellow cabs(出租车).They serve as a quick and easy way of getting across Manhattan, where the subway doesn't take you everywhere.Stopping a cab is easy;just stick out your arm like you do in any city. But,with over 12,000 yellow cabs in the Big Apple(纽约别称)they also cause traffic jams.Since 1873 when the first cable car started public service, the slow and noisy vehicle has been a symbol of San Francisco.Although once damaged by a serious earthquake and challenged by cars,it is never caught in traffic jams and provides better views than the subway. But there are no such symbols in Los Angeles. If you visit you'd better rent a car.The city's public transportation is terrible. It can take hours to get across town by bus.The subway covers just a small part of the city centre. The light rail line only runs between the Long Beach hotel area and the city centre. That's why people in Los Angeles love their private cars more than any other people in the world.1.Why are Londoners proud of the tube?(No more than 15 words)________________________________________________________________________ 答案Because it is the oldest and most complicated underground railway system in the world.2.What's the problem with the yellow cabs in New York?(No more than 5 words)________________________________________________________________________ 答案They cause traffic jams.3.How can people travel across town easily in Los Angeles?(No more than 6 words)________________________________________________________________________ 答案By renting a car.4.What is the main topic of the passage?(No more than 13 words)________________________________________________________________________ 答案Many cities have a type of transportation that has become a cultural icon.Passage 3(CNN)-Nollywood,Nigeria's(尼日利亚)growing film industry, has developed in recent years into a powerful movie?making machine, attracting audiences with its universal themes andstrong narratives of urban culture. The giant industry, one of Nigeria's biggest employers, has been dismissed as a factory rushing more than 1,000 typically low?budget films a year, producing a wide range of stories with themes from romance and drama to comedy and witchcraft. It is now the third-largest producer of feature films(故事片)in the world, ranking behind only Hollywood in the US and India's Nollywood revenue(收入).And lately, instead of relying on modest budgets, many Nollywood movies are attracting funding of a few million dollars, benefiting from the films' growing popularity. But while the industry gets bigger, insiders say Nollywood has remained true to its key to success-its connection with the audience.Nigerian director Lancelot Imasuen, who is now working on a $2 million film called “Invasion 1987,”says Nollywood movies are made for Nigerians and the rest of the continent.“People get in touch with Nollywood's direct realism,”says Imasuen.“People are getting more and more interested, more
