PART ONE: ENGLISHG LITERTURE
An Introduction to Old and Medieval English
Literature
Since historical times, England, where the early inhabitants were Celts, has been conquered three times. It was conquered by the Romans, the Anglo-Saxons, and the Normans. England was not much affected by the Roman Conquest, but she felt the full weight of the other two conquests. The Anglo-Saxons brought to England the Germanic language and culture, while the Normans brought a fresh wave of Mediterranean civilization, which includes Greek culture, Roman law, and the Christian religion. It is the cultural influences of these two conquests that provided the source for the rise and growth of English literature.

As a multi-national country, Britain has gone through several conquests, which laid a foundation for the progress of the British people. What are the historical conquests and the significance of them in British history? Try to get the information from the materials available.
The Native Celts and the Roman Conquest
As there is no actual written history about the origin of the earliest natives in Britain, the Celts were taken as the early natives in British history. Their languages were assimilated into the English language and served as the origin of the Scots and Welsh languages. The Celtic tribes migrated from northwestern Europe to the British Isles from about 750 B.C.in search for empty land, living in a primitive society. They became the ancestors of the Scots, the Irish, and the Welsh, and created their own civilization known as the historical Stonehenge.

Roman Britain & Anglo-Saxon Britain
During the Anglo-Saxon rule, the northern part of Britain remained independent, inhabited by Celtic tribes. The two main tribes, the Picts and the Scots, were united under one king in AD 843 to form Scotland ,although the highlands and islands were not part of this. For centuries,Christianity had been gaining hold in Britain with monks such as St.Augustine of Canterbury spreading the faith and establishing monasteries. By the end of the 7th century, all of the kings of the British Isles were Christianised.
