This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you're "hot". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people, the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: "Get up, John. You'll be late for work again." The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles means, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Dr Kleitman believes that habit can help. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before at your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours. Questions:According to the writer, if a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably____________.A: he refuses to follow his own energy cycleB: he is at his peak in the afternoon or eveningC: he is a lazy personD: he is not sure when his energy is low答案: BWhich of the following is true according to the passage?A: Man's energy cycle can be changed easilyB: Getting up early in the morning is not a piece of cake.C: Some family quarrels are caused by unawareness of energy cycle.D: Everyone has a daily energy cycle but a lazy one.答案: CIf one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should____________.A: get up earlier than usualB: change his energy cycleC: go to bed earlierD: overcome his laziness答案: AYou are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will ____________.A: help you to control your temper early in the dayB: keep your energy cycle under control all dayC: enable you to concentrate on your routine workD: help you to keep your energy for the day's work答案: DWhich of the following statements is NOT true?A: Habit helps one adapt to his own energy cycle.B: Dr. Kleitman doesn't explain why people reach their peaks at different hours of the day.C: Children have energy cycles, too.D: Getting off to work with a minimum effort helps save one's energy.答案: D三、完形填空【45】When Americans meet their friends, they often start their conversations with a greeting and may then ask about their friends, families, and jobs. Reading Comprehension (不需要抄此篇阅读文章,只抄文章后5道选择题)Wish for the Freshman YearAfter four years, the time has come. In less than two weeks, I will have graduated.I look back now and I can't believe how fast it all went. I can still remember the first day of classes, looking on the map on the back of the Schedule of Classes and asking where the classroom building was. Now I'm a senior, looking at freshmen with envy. Every day I wish I could freeze time and make the next two weeks go more slowly. I know a lot of people who can't wait to graduate, but for me it's the opposite. I want to turn back time instead and cherish every day of my college experience once again. For me, college has been a great learning experience, and most of the learning process has taken place outside of the classroom. My sophomore year of college was perhaps the most remarkable year of my life. This was the year that I finally convinced my mom that I was going to be OK living on campus, and she finally let me go. This was the year that I made some lifelong friends, and through many triumphs and failures I came to know more about myself. My sophomore year involved experimenting with new things, such as camping in mountains, attempting to present some lousy poems to newspapers and drawing cartoons of my teachers in class. As I walk down the familiar routes on campus, I find myself doing a lot of soul-searching and reminiscing. I find myself wanting to start all over again and recapture the fun and excitement of my college days. I have been panicking at the idea of graduating. I have been going to school for as long as I can remember, and I feel like there is so much more that I want to learn, but instead I have to graduate. The world is enormous and the possibilities are endless. For the past four years I have been surrounded with a safety net. The student status has been a somewhat comforting feeling, giving me an escape from the realities of the world outside. With less than two weeks left of school, I'm getting a queasy feeling deep down every time I think about the fact that I'm going to be graduating. For as long as I can remember, I have been a student. I feel like I'm living in denial about graduating. Every time I get asked about what I'm going to do after college I feel like screaming at the top of my lungs. I don't know what I want to do with the rest of my life. It's too difficult to even contemplate the idea that soon I will bewaking up in the mornings and not have a class to which Ishould be going. On a recent interview, I was asked, "Is this theprofession you want for the rest of your life?" I was amusedand almost laughed at the question, but I gave an honestanswer. I don't know what the future holds. During the lastfour years I have changed my mind so many times, the ideaof a lifetime commitment to a certain job seems like torture.Walking on campus in the middle of the night I realizehow much I will miss my college days. Every little thing seems so much more beautiful. And every little thing makes me realize how wonderful and special my college experience has been. I will cherish these days forever as I reluctantly close the doors on my college life.1.Why was the author less eager to graduate than his classmates?A) He wished he could learn more in the next two weeks.B) He valued his college life and wished it would not have to end.C) He didn't want to find a job after graduation.D) He didn't envy the freshmen who could enjoy their college life.2.Which of the following is not true according to paragraph 2?A) The author finally convinced his mom that he was going to be OKliving on campus.B) The author made some lifelong friends that year.C) The author came to know more about himself through many triumphsand failures.D) The author attempted to contribute some cartoons of his teachers tonewspapers.3.What was he thinking about while he was taking a walk on campus?A) His first day on campus.B) His lifelong friends.C) The four years of his college life.D) The excitement of becoming a college student.4.Which of the following is true, according to paragraph 4?A) The author was very excited that he will graduate within 2 weeks.B) The author was reluctant to say good-bye to the college life.C) The author was sure to find a lifelong job.D) The author was ready to face the approaching challenge aftergraduation.5.What is the main idea of the passage?A) The author cherishes college life and is thus reluctant to graduate.B) The author is extremely eager to graduate.C) The author feels slightly sorry to leave the college.D) The author feels ready for his future career.V. Their existence, especially the existence of rare animals makes the whole world lively and colorful. Unfortunately, we heard such news recently that rare animals, even kept in the zoo, couldn't escape being hurt and killed, at which we can feel nothing but shocked. The reason why it happened is that some people lack understanding about these animals and caring for them. Therefore, we should study and publicize the information about rare animals, and keep it in mind that protecting animals is the duty of everyone. At the same time, we should take active and effective measures. After all, protecting animals is protecting ourselves.

Furthermore, they have little experience in using the information. When they move forward to their careers, they will quickly discover how much they still have to learn. College can only set the stage for their future learning. There is no way it can give them all the information they need, because there is too much of it and it is expanding too rapidly. This is why graduation is sometimes called “commencement”.II. While-reading ActivitiesA.
