However, by using the same overall risk assessment framework, results can still be compared: from very detailed approaches to overview approaches.Resource allocation (or reallocation) is normally the most effective way to practice risk management. Costs must therefore play a role in risk management. Because resources are finite, the optimum allocation of those scarce resources is sought.The methodology should “get smarter” as we ourselves learn. Due to the lack of historical pipeline failure data for various failure mechanisms, and incomplete incident data for a multitude of integrity threats and release impacts, a statistically valid database is not thought to be available to adequately quantify the probability of a failure (e.g., failureskm-year), the monetized consequences of a failure (e.g., dollars/failure), or the combined total risk of a failure (e.g., dollarskm-year) on apipeline-specific basis.Certuin consequences: The focus ofthis assessment is on risks to public safety and the environment. Other consequences such as cost of business interruption and risks to company employees are not specifically quantified. However, most other consequences are thought to be proportional to the public safety and environmental threats so the results will generally apply to most consequences.Abnormal conditions: This risk assessment shows the relative risks along the pipeline during its operation. The focus is on abnormal conditions, specifically the unintentional releases of product. Risks from normal operations include those from employee vehicle and watercraft operation; other equipment operation; use of tools and cleaning and maintenance fluids; and other aspects that are considered to add normal and/or negligible additional risks to the public. Potential construction risks associated with new pipeline installations are also not considered.Insensitivity to length: The pipeline risk scores represent the relative level of risk that each point along the pipeline presents to its surroundings. is the scores are insensitive to length. If two pipeline segments, 100 and 2600 ft, respectively, have the same risk score, then each point along the 100-8 segment presents the same risk as does each point along the 2600-ft length. Of course, the 2600-ft length presents more overall risk than does the 100-A length, because it has manymore risk-producing points.Note: With regard to length sensitivity, a cumulative risk calculation adds the length aspect so that a 100-A length ofpipeline with one risk score can be compared against a 2600-A length with a different risk score.Use of judgment: As with any risk assessment methodology, some subjectivity in the form of expert opinion and engineering judgments are required when “hard” data provide incomplete knowledge. HAZOP and failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) studies are especially useful tools when the risk assessments include complex facilities such as tank farms and pump/compressor stations.Fault-tree/event-tree analysis. Tracing the sequence of events backward from a failure yields afault tree. In an event tree, the process begins from an event and progresses forward through all possible subsequent events to determine possible failures. Probabilities can be assigned to each branch and then combined to arrive at complete event probabilities. An example of this application is discussed below and in Chapter 14.Scenarios. “Most probable” or “most severe” pipeline failure scenarios are envisioned. Resulting damages are estimated and mitigating responses and preventions are designed. This is often a modified fault-tree or event-tree analysis.Scenario-based tools such as event trees and fault trees are particularly common because they underlie every other approach. They are always used, even if informally or as a thought process, to better understand the event sequences that produce failuresand consequences. They are also extremely useful in examining specific situations. They can assist in incident investigation, determining optimum valve siting, safety system installation, pipeline routing, and other common pipeline analyses. These are often highly focused applications. These techniques are further discussed in Chapter 14.Figure 1.3 is an example of a partial event-tree analysis. The event tree shows the probability of a certain failure-initiation event, possible next events with their likelihood, interactions of some possible mitigating events or features, and, finally, possible end consequences. This illustration demonstrates how quickly the interrelationships make an event tree very large and complex. especially when all possible initiating events are considered. The probabilities associated with events will also normally be hard to determine. For example, Figure 1.3 suggests that for every 600 ignitions of product from a large rupture. one will result in a detonation, 500 will result in high thermal damages, and 99 will result in localized fire damage only. This only occurs after a Ym chance of ignition, which occurs after a Yim chance of a large rupture, and after a once-every-two-years line strike. In reality, these numbers will be difficult to estimate. Because the probabilities must then be combined (multiplied) along any path in this diagram, inaccuracies will build quickly.Screening analyses. While job opening rates across the country remained relatively steady month-over-month, hires roughly mirrored Covid’s geographical surges: in the Northeast (hardest hit in the first surge) hires were weakest in the spring and rose through the summer. Just as important, don’t forget about your current staff. Consider raising wages 6-18% for current workers or offering retention bonuses. Our estimates show that it costs roughly 25% more to hire than to retain your current staff. Embrace flexibility. Workers are embracing One Life – a balance of work and home life. Although wages are a critical deciding factor, don’t overlook the value of offering a flexible work environment to attract and retain talent. That includes more time off and a remote or hybrid work schedule if feasible. Whatever you decide to do, make your policy crystal clear.Speed up onboarding. Analysis has shown that corrosion is consistently the predominant cause of failure in steel production pipeline systems. Corrosion-resistant materials, such as fibre-composite pipe, thermoplastic pipe, and plastic-lined pipe have long been explored as alternatives to steel pipe, and have in fact been used in various forms for many years. The ERCB has encouraged the use of such materials where appropriate and has co-operated with licensees to allow the use of various types of new pipeline systems on an experimental basis, subject to technical assessment, service limitations, and periodic performance evaluations.This paper will review the types of composite pipe materials that have been used in Alberta, and present statistical data on the length of composite pipe in place, growth trends, failure causes and failure frequency. When properly designedinstalled, fiberglass pipelines can be maintenance-free (i.e., no requirements for corrosion inhibition and cathodic protection, etc.) However, similar to many other upstream producers, Husky has experienced frequent fiberglass pipeline failures.A pipeline risk assessment was conducted using a load resistance methodology for the likelihood assessment. Major threats and resistance-to-failure attributes were identified.The significance of each threat and resistance attribute, such as type and grade of pipe, and construction methods (e.g., joining, backfill, and riser connection) were analyzed based on failure statistical correlations. The risk assessment concluded that the most significant threat is construction activity interfering with the existing fiberglass pipe zone embedment. The most important resistance attribute to a fiberglass pipeline failure is appropriate bedding, backfill and compaction, especially at tie-in points. Proper backfilling provides most resistance to ground settlement, frost-heaving, thaw-unstable soil, or pipe movement due to residual stress or thermal, and pressure shocks.A technical analysis to identify risk mitigation options with the support of fiberglass pipe supplier and distributors was conducted. To reduce the risk of fiberglass pipeline failures, a formal backfill review process was adopted; and a general pipeline tie-in/repair procedure checklist was developed and incorporated into the maintenance procedure manual to improve the workmanship quality. CRs are indispensible when assessing the remaining strength, probability of failure (POF) and reliability of a production piping/pipeline with defect(s), and permit assessing the time to reaching an ultimate permissible POF, a limit state, or time to actual failure of the leak/rupture type. The CRs are also needed when creating a risk based pipeline inspection (RBI) plan, which is at the core of a sound IMP. The paper briefly describes the state of the art and current problems inquality of direct assessment (DA) and in-line inspection (ILI) tocomprehensive CR models are listed and formulated. Since corrosion or, in general, deterioration of pipelines is a stochastic time dependent process, the best way to assess pipeline state is to monitor the growth of its defects and/or thinning of its web. Currently the pipeline industry is using such methods as electric resistivity probes (ERP), corrosion samples (CS) and weight loss coupons (WLC) to define the CR for pipelines which transport extremely corrosive substances, or are located in a corrosive environment. Additionally, inhibitors are used to bring the CR to an acceptable level. In this setting the most reliable methods which permit assessment of CRs with needed accuracy and consistency, are probabilistic methods. The paper describes a practical method of predicting the probabilistic growth of the defect parameters using the readings of separated in time different DA or ILI measurements, using the two-level control policy [1]. The procedure of constructing the probability density functions (PDFs) of the defect parameters as functions of time, linear/nonlinear CR growth, and the initial size of the defects is presented. [方法] 采用个人声暴露计测量L Aeq.8h ,用声级计测量L Aeq.1min 和每个时间段的噪声值,计算出全天的等效声级(L Aeq.T )。

应用L Aeq.8h 和L Aeq.1min 、L Aeq.T 分别测量某输油管道加工厂和某家用电器制造厂239名工人的个体噪声(接触)和相应作业场所噪声(暴露)水平。

[结果] 两家工厂L Aeq.8h 均值分别为(89.7±3.8)dB (A )和(90.5±5.7)dB (A ),分别高于L Aeq.T 的(88.0±2.4)dB (A )和(89.2±3.6)dB (A )(P < 0.05或P < 0.01)。

与L Aeq.8h 相比,L Aeq.1min 采样时间点存在抽样误差。

绝大多数工作岗位的L Aeq.1min 与L Aeq.8h 均值差大于3 dB (A ),所有工作岗位的L Aeq.T 均值与L Aeq.8h 均值差均小于3.0 dB (A )。

[结论] L Aeq.8h 能反映在非稳态噪声工作场所工人实际接触噪声暴露水平,L Aeq.T 比较符合作业工人实际噪声接触水平,L Aeq.1min 会低估或高估工人噪声暴露水平。

Lacher,Chair,Department of Computer ScienceCHAPTER 1INTRODUCTIONUsers of real-time systems are not only interested in obtaining correct computations from their programs, but timely responses as well.A program which gives a useful result past a deadline is not acceptable.Therefore, it is necessary to determine a program’s execution time statically.It is unrealistic to attempt to predict a precise execution time for every real-time program since the execution time often depends upon input values whose influence on the program’s control flow is unknown until the program executes. In addition, floating-point instructions usually vary in execution time based on the values of their operands.Consequently,instead of trying to derive a single execution time, a more pragmatic approach is to calculate upper (worst-case) and lower (best-case) bounds on the execution time.Real-time programmers tend to be more interested in the worst-case execution time (WCET) because of the notion of real-time deadlines. In other words, a task that completes too early is not as much of a concern as a task that finishes too late.Many architectural features, such as pipelines and caches, in recent processors present a dilemma for architects of real-time e of these architectural features can result in significant performance improvements. Yet, these same features introduce a potentially high level of unpredictability when it comes to establishing bounds on a program’s execution time.Dependencies between instructions can cause pipelinehazards that may delay the completion of instructions.While there has been much work analyzing the execution of a sequence of instructions within a basic block, the analysis of pipeline performance across basic blocks is more problematic.Instruction or data cache misses can also require several cycles to resolve. Predicting caching behavior of an instruction is even more difficult since it may be affected by memory references that occurred long before the instruction was executed. In addition, caching and pipeline behavior are not independent, exacerbating the problem of timing analysis.Without the ability to predict instruction cache and pipeline performance simultaneously when calculating a WCET,it has been customary to be pessimistic, assuming that all instruction cache accesses would be misses and that pipeline data hazards would always give rise to additional execution delay.As an illustration, consider the following code segment and pipeline diagram in Fig. 1 consisting of three SPARC instructions.The pipeline cycles and stages represent the execution on a MicroSPARC I processor [1]. Each number within the pipeline diagram represents an instruction that is currently in the pipeline stage shown above it and occupies that stage during the cycle indicated to the left. Instruction0performs a floating-point addition that requires a total of twenty cycles. Chapter 2presents the context in which the timing analyzer operates with respect to its input/output and ancillary software. Chapter 3explicates the algorithm for obtaining best-case and worst-case performance. Chapter 4reports how well the timing analyzer predicts the performance of six benchmark programs.Chapter 5 discusses the role of the graphical user interface in communicating with the user.Chapter 6 examines related work in the area of predicting execution time.Chapter 7 describes future improvements planned for the timing analyzer,and Chapter 8 presents the conclusions.CHAPTER 2PREVIOUS WORKThe timing analyzer described in this thesis is part of a software package that has been under development by several researchers over the past few years. This package consists of an optimizing compiler called vpo[2], a static instruction cache simulator and a timing analyzer with a graphical user interface. Fig.2depicts an overview of the approach for predicting performance of large code segments on machines with pipelines and instruction caches.Control-flow information, which could have also been obtained by analyzing assembly or object files, is stored as the side effect of vpo’s compilation of one or more C source files.This control-flow information is passed to the static cache simulator,potential caching behavior based on awhich ultimately categorizes each instruction’sgiven cache configuration.The caching behavior of an instruction is assigned one of four categories, described in Tables 1 and 2, for each loop level in which an instruction is contained. Although most machines that have an instruction cache also have a data cache, the timing analyzer does not as yet predict data cache performance.When the timing analyzer has completed its analysis, it invokes a graphical user interface [8] allowing the user to request timing bounds for portions of the program.Excerpts of this thesis, including a concise description of the algorithm and worst-case results, can be found in [9].CHAPTER 3TIMING ANALYSISSeveral steps are necessary to obtain the timing predictions of a program.The optimizing compiler vpo determines control-flow information. Next, the static cache simulator predicts the caching behavior of each assembly instruction according to the program’s control-flow. The timing analyzer also uses the control-flow information to determine the set of paths through each loop and function [5].Once this information has been computed, the timing analyzer turns its attention to predicting the BCET and WCET.The timing analyzer determines execution time for programs by first analyzing the innermost loops and functions, and proceeding to higher level loops and functions until it reaches main().For example, consider the skeleton program in Fig. 3.The timing analyzer will establish best- and worst-case time bounds of fun2(),loop_2, loop_1,fun1(),fun2()and finally main().Note that fun2()needs to be analyzed twice since it is called from two different places.The pipeline and caching behavior of the two inv o cations of fun2()are likely to differ.For example, if an instruction i in fun2()contains an assembly instruction that maps to the same cache line as an instruction involving the++j operation in loop_2,instruction i will always be a miss in cache as long as fun2()is invoked from inside loop_2.On the other hand, instruction i may still be a hit when fun2()is called from main().The timingvoid fun1(){int i, j;for (i = 0; i < 100; ++i)/* loop_1 : outer loop */ for (j = 0; j < 100; ++j) {/* loop_2 : inner loop */ fun2();}}void fun2(){/* body of function */}main(){fun1();fun2();}Figure 3: A Skeleton Programanalyzer treats a function as a loop that only executes for a single iteration.Hereafter,a loop being analyzed will refer to either a loop3or a function within the program.3.1 Analyzing A Single Path of InstructionsBefore the timing analyzer examines the program, it reads information from a machine-dependent file concerning the pipeline requirements of each instruction in the processor’s instruction set.This information includes how many cycles each instruction spends in each pipeline stage.Forfloating-point instructions, the number of cycles spent in the FEX can vary significantly depending upon the values of the register operands.For instance, the double-precision divide instruction fdivd(which is distinct from the single precision divide instruction fdivs)can take as few as six cycles in the FEX or as3In this thesis,loops will be restricted to natural loops.A natural loop is a loop with a single entry block.While the static simulator can process unnatural loops, the timing analyzer is restricted to only analyzing natural loops since it would be difficult for both the timing analyzer and user to determine the set of possible blocks associated with a single iteration in an unnatural loop.It should be noted that unnatural loops occur quite infrequently.many as56cycles. Thus,afloating-point intensive program tends to have a wider difference between best-case and worst-case execution times than a program with only integer instructions.The timing analyzer also obtains from this file the latest pipeline stage in which the values of its register operands are required via forwarding for each instruction to proceed, and in which stage the value of the destination register is available via forwarding.The control-flow information that vpo provides also identifies the register operands of each instruction in the program.As mentioned before, the static cache simulator categorizes each instruction’s expected caching behavior.Based on an instruction’s categorization, the timing analyzer can decide whether the instruction will be treated as a hit or miss in the pipeline.When an instruction is a hit in the pipeline, it will spend one cycle in the IF stage, possibly more if it cannot immediately proceed to the ID due to a stall. When an instruction is treated as a miss in the pipeline, it will spend the duration of the miss penalty in the IF stage in addition to the single cycle it would have occupied the IF had the instruction been a hit.Even if it is a miss in cache, the instruction may spend more than ten cycles in the IF stage if there is a stall.For example, a double-precision floating-point divide instruction fdivd may spend up to 56 cycles in the FEX stage. If the fdivd is followed by two instructions, the first of which being another floating-point instruction that is a cache hit and the second of which that is cache miss, then there will be a structural hazard between the fdivd instruction and the floating-point instruction following it.As a result, while the fdivd instruction is occupying the FEX for 56 cycles, the second instruction after it will spend the same 56 cycles in the IF stage. In this case, the cache miss is overlapped in time with the structural hazard.A path of instructions consists of all the instructions that can be executed during asingle iteration of a loop (or in the case of a function, all the instructions that are executed in one invocation of the function).If the loop has no conditional (e.g.if or switch)statements, then there will be only one path associated with this loop.As an example, consider the function Square()in Fig. 4.This function contains seven instructions, numbered from 0 through 6, that comprise one path.Instructions 0 and 1 are classified as always misses,and for this reason they must each spend ten cycles in the IF stage before proceeding to the other pipeline stages.Instruction 1 is a store instruction st,which must spend two cycles in the CA stage.This pipeline requirement results in a structural hazard since instruction 2 is ready to enter the CA stage in cycle 24 but cannot do so until instruction 1 vacates it.Thus, instruction 1 causes instructions 2, 3and 4 to stall in the EX, ID and IF stages, respectively,during cycle 24.A similar structural hazard occurs during cycle 26 when instruction 2, another store instruction, occupies the CA stage for two cycles. Furthermore,no limit need be imposed on the amount of potential overlap when concatenating the analysis of two paths.3.2 Loop AnalysisTo find the BCET and WCET for a loop, the timing analyzer must first evaluate all of the possible paths through the loop.3.2.1 The Union ConceptWith pipelining it is possible that the combination of a set of paths may produce a longer execution time than just repeatedly selecting the longest path.For instance, consider a loop with two paths that take about the same number of cycles to execute. Path 1 has a fdivd instruction near its beginning and path 2 has a fdivd instruction near its end. Alternating between the paths will produce the WCET since there will be a structural hazard between the two instructions when path 1’s fdivd occurs shortly after path 2’sfdivd.To avoid the problem of calculating all combinations of paths, which would be the only method for obtaining perfectly accurate estimations, the timing analyzer determines the union of possible pipeline effects of the paths for an iteration of a loop.This simplifies the algorithm and also does not cause any noticeable overestimation or underestimation. Since all paths through a loop must begin with the same header block, the beginning pipeline information among the various paths is usually the same.Also, paths often end with the same block of instructions, so that ending pipeline information is unaffected by the process of uniting the pipeline information.However, beginning and ending pipeline information can significantly differ when one path consists exclusively of integer instructions while another contains floating-point instructions.This situation occurs in a simple program depicted in Figs. 5 and 6.The generated assembly code has been optimized by vpo.The local variables i, count and fcount have been allocated to registers%o3,%o2and%f1respectively. Since the SPARC has delayed branches, the instruction following each transfer of control takes effect before the branch is taken.
