The next day he bought food and drinks for some homeless people and followed it up by donating coins to a woman, who did not have enough to feed a parking meter.Though most of his kind gestures have been welcomed, Luke says there nave been a few awkward situations. When he was attempting to give away a£20 bill to an elderly lady whose granddaughter was doubtful of his intentions and the time he bought a sausage roll(腊肠卷)for a homeless man, he happened to be a vegetarian. The majority of Luke’s good deeds, which have been recorded in an online diary, have been about helping people with small things. He helped to take out the garbage for an elderly neighbor or helped a disabled lady pick out a dress for a party. However, the young man has also spent close to£4,000 of his own money, buying groceries or gifts for the children in need.To try to encourage others to perform good deeds, Luke has created a deck of cards called “Cards for Kindness”. Each suggests a simple act of kindness-things like giving a stranger a hug or making peace with an enemy. The best pall is that all the money he collects from distributing the cards is donated to the British Heart Foundation, a charity that helps the homeless.Luke’s generosity has not gone unnoticed. To reward the young man, Dominos recently awarded him a ye ar’s supply of free pizza. D.Luke would donate the pizza to others.DRecently, I had lunch with a young Chinese student who studies at a college in New York. He is very bright and aspiring and I enjoyed our conversation. Still I felt frustrated and useless afterwards because I was not able to provide him with any good news. Graduating at the end of this year, he asked me how he could find a job in this country and fulfill his career dreams. In recent years, students who found a job here after graduation have had to go through a cruel lottery system to obtain their HIB working visa. And the success rates have been declining year after year because of the ever growing number of applicants. Last year, there were 233.000 applicants, and only 30 percent of them were lucky, less than half of the rate in 2013.And it can only become President Donald Trump’s immigration policies in this country aretightening up and this trend will continue for at least the next few years. In this case, foreign students studying social sciences, a field in which starting salaries are rarely above the required amount, car, kiss their visa hopes goodbye.Compared to the older generation of Chinese students, today’s young people no longer consider the US as the only option. Many start to think China offers better opportunities in the longer term. This is not to say that Chinese students in the US are not interested in job opportunities here any more. A few years of work experience in the US can give them leverage when they finally land back in their home country .But if the job opportunities are largely reduced by the tightening of immigration policy, I expect there will be a decline. And if that happens, it is the American economy that will suffer from the loss of those educated, hard-working and talented immigrants.32.The author felt frustrated because ________.A.he was not interested in the talk B.he didn’t fulfill his career dreamsC.he couldn’t provide helpfu l advice D.he thought the student was useless33.Which of the following statement is NOT true according to the passage? ________A.The lottery system for HIB working visa is too tough.B.Chinese students have no choice but to return to China.C.President Trump is tightening up the immigration policies.D.More and more students are applying for the working visa.34.What does the w ord “leve rage” in paragraph 5 probably mean? ________A.advantage. B.language. C.ability. D.education.35.What is the author’s attitude to the tightening of immigration policy? ________A.doubtful. B.supportive. C.indifferent. AMany schools across the US hold graduation ceremonies this time of year. In some schools, even 5 and 6-year-olds observe their graduation from kindergarten. And so can older people, much older. Meet 70-year-old Jerry Reid, who just graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He earned a bachelor’s degree.Mr. Reid might not look like the average college student; his hair is definitely grayer. But still Jerry Reid’s age is easy to forget, other UVA students know him as one of their own.Mr. Reid sat into the “Hoo Crew,” a group that cheers loudly for the school at sports events. He also joined a men's group on campus. He sang drinking songs along with many other students. Mr. Reid’s school friends say they can talk to him just about anything.About a half century ago, in his 20s, Mr. Reid was not in school. Instead, he was racing cars and chasing girls. But he says his friend Bill invited him to UV A parties.“Bill told me what a terrible life I had unless I came up here and went to school with him,” said Reid. That was in 1963. Jerry Reid says it took him 48 years to take that advice. In 2011, he entered college. UV A Professor Luke Wright says Mr. Reid influences students. He opened the minds of the young adults. The teacher says Mr. Reid showed them that life does not end at 40. Instead, the 70-year-old college graduate believes that getting older can be the beginning of a dream.“Remember that path that you left waits for you. It’s there. It’s yours. All you must do is to get out of your own way and get back to it. And, that's exactly what I did,” said Reid.Mr. Reid says that he and his wife Susan now would take some time off to enjoy his college degree. Then, he’ll return to UV A to begin studying for his graduate degree.21. Which of the following is true of Mr. Reid?A. He was laughed at by other students.B. After you’ve done sightseeing in London, shopping in New York, enjoyed the local food in Paris, and danced to your heart’s content at the Brazilian carnival, where else can you go? What attractive tourist destination awaits you?Well, Antarctica sounds like the holiday of a lifetime! It's considered the last great wilderness on Earth. Just a few scientists in research stations share the icy landscape with penguins and other animals which can struggle with the low temperatures.Tourism began in Antarctica in the 1950s and it's still small part. About 37,000 tourists are expected there this season, but many won't even leave the boat. The BBC’s Juliet Rix visited the frozen continent and asked herself if she should be there at all, causing potential problems to such a sensitive environment. Her tour guide admitted that all visitors leave a footprint and they all go to the same places, the accessible coastline, which is also where the penguins and seals go to raise. But some people believe that if carefully controlled, tourism can be good for Antarctica. It has no native population and it needs advocates. Visitors to the icy continent might be ready to support and even to fund its preservation. And they're likely to engage in the discussion about global warming, which has led to the melting of glaciers.According to Rix, guidelines are followed when you’re about to set foot in Antarctica and tourists have to disinfect(消毒)their boots to make sure no alien species are introduced. And once on land, there's no eating or smoking. Rocks, bone fragments—nothing should be taken as a souvenir and nothing should be left behind.Tourists fortunate enough to visit the Antarctic must be aware that this is not their home and keep their fingers crossed that future generations will also be able to enjoy such breathtaking views.28. Who lives in Antarctica?A. 37,000 tourists.B. The BBC's Juliet Rix.C. A few scientists and animals.D. People in London and Paris.29. Why can tourism be good for Antarctica?A. People can bring some animals into it.B. People may take interest in the protection of it.C. People can give advice to the native population.D. People will go to the coastline to play with the seals.30. What are the guidelines when you go on the shore?A. You can leave rubbish on the shore.B. You can smoke and eat on the shore.C. You can take something as souvenirs.D. You can help to protect the environment.31. What is th e author’s attitude towards the tourists go ing to Antarctica?A. Positive.B. Ambiguous.C. Subjective.D. Negative.DUntil recently, scientists had mapped only about 20 percent of the sea floor. But our knowledge of the deep seas is changing because of information from satellites. Scientists have produced a new map that provides a detailed picture of the oceans. The map is expected to help oceanographers (海洋学家), industry and governments. The new map is twice as detailed as the map made 20 years ago. David Sandwell is a geophysics professor at the University of California. He and other scientists worked on the mapping project. He says they turned to space to look deeper into the ocean. The scientists collected and studied information from two satellites. Some of the data came from the European Space Agency’s Cryo-2 satellite. It was placed in Earth's orbit to watch sea ice. The other satellite is the American space agency's Jason-1. It is studying the surface of the oceans. Scientists combined the satellite data with images gathered by sonar (声波定位仪) equipment on ships. Sonar works by sending sound waves through the water. When the sound waves hit an object, its presence is confirmed. The new map shows the sea floor as it has never been seen before. It shows thousands of underwater mountains and places where continents pulled apart. It shows where earthquakes were active many years ago. They all are buried deep underneath the ocean floor.David Sandwell says the map is a powerful tool for fisheries, those interested in protecting the environment and for oil exploration.“The petrol exploration industry is interested in how to reconnect the continents, bring them back together tectonically so you can map the basins on one continental edge—say, Africa—and use that to establish where the similar basin would be on the other continental edge in South America.”If scientists know that information, they may be able to find oil fields. The new data also will help scientists improve their estimates of ocean depths. This information can help ships travel safely and improve military operations and scientific projects worldwide.Mr. Sandwell thinks scientists will make many more discoveries as they examine the new map and the information it provides.32. A Many schools across the US hold graduation ceremonies this time of year. In some schools, even 5 and 6-year-olds observe their graduation from kindergarten. And so can older people, much older. Meet 70-year-old Jerry Reid, who just graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He earned a bachelor’s degree. Mr. Reid might not look like the average college student; his hair is definitely grayer. But still Jerry Reid’s age is easy to forget, other UVA students know him as one of their own. Mr. Reid sat into the “Hoo Crew,” a group that cheers loudly for the school at sports events. He also joined a men's group on campus. He sang drinking songs along with many other students. Mr. Reid’s school friends say they can talk to him just about anything. About a half century ago, in his 20s, Mr. Reid was not in school. Instead, he was racing cars and chasing girls. But he says his friend Bill invited him to UVA parties. “Bill told me what a terrible life I had unless I came up here and went to school with him,” said Reid. That was in 1963. Jerry Reid says it took him 48 years to take that advice. In 2011, he entered college. UVA Professor Luke Wright says Mr. Reid influences students. He opened the minds of the young adults. The teacher says Mr. Reid showed them that life does not end at 40. Instead, the 70-year-old college graduate believes that getting older can be the beginning of a dream. “Remember that path that you left waits for you. It’s there. It’s yours. All you must do is to get out of your own way and get back to it. And, that's exactly what I did,” said Reid. Mr. Reid says that he and his wife Susan now would take sometime off to enjoy his college degree. Then, he’ll return to UVA to begin studying for his graduate degree. 21. Which of the following is true of Mr. Reid? A. He was laughed at by other students. B. He was interested in study in his youth. C. He enlarged the views of young people. D. He got his graduate degree at the age of 70. 22. From the third paragraph, we can infer that Mr. Reid was _________. A. considerate B. independent C. intelligent D. energetic 23. What does Paragraph 6 mainly discuss? A. How Mr. Reid realizes his dream. B. What teachers think of Mr. Reid. C. When Mr. Reid entered college.D. Why the students likes Mr. Reid. 24. What lesson can we learn from the story of Jerry Reid? A. It is never too late to learn.B. Two heads are better than one.C. Actions speak louder than words.D. A friend in need is a friend indeed. B Raymond Wang, 17, of Canada was awarded first place for a device that improves air quality on airplanes while cutting down the spreading of diseases at this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). According to Intel, Wang's system improves the quality of fresh air in a plane cabin by more than 190 per cent, while cutting diseases by up to 55 times, compared to conventional designs. Intel noted that Wang's invention could be easily and economically fixed into existing airplanes. Two other teen researchers earned awards of $50,000 each at the event. One developed a technique to more quickly diagnose diseases caused by HIV. It’s the virus responsible for AIDS. The other invented a device to more quickly shut down undersea oil spills. “Intel believes young people are the key to future innovation and that in order to confront the global challenges of tomorrow, we need students from all backgrounds to get involved in science, technology and engineering,” says Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Intel Foundation. “We hopethese winners will inspire other young people to pursue their interest in these fields,” she says, “and apply their curiosity and creativity to the common good.” This ye ar's Intel International Science and Engineering Fair featured approximately 1,700 young scientists selected from more than 75 countries and regions. In addition to the top winners, 600 finalists received awards and prizes for their innovative research. The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair honours the world’s most promising student scientists, inventors and engineers. Their projects are then evaluated online by nearly 1,000 judges from almost every scientific field. The 2015 Intel ISEF is funded jointly by Intel and the Intel Foundation with additional awards and support from dozens of other academic, governmental and scientific organizations. This year, US$4 million was awarded. 25. Compared to traditional designs, Raymond Wang’s system _________. A. prevents oceans from oil pollution quickly B. improves air quality on airplanes effectively C. treats diseases happening on airplanes quickly D. costs more but can be easily fixed into airplanes 26. For what purpose is Intel ISEF carried out? A. To inspire teenagers to challenge the authorities. B. To persuade more teens to do good to the society. C. To get more teens involved in computer exploring. D. To encourage young people to get interested in science. 27. What do we know about 2015 Intel ISEF? A. More than 30% of finalists receive awards and prizes. B. Scientists all over the world compete for grand prizes. C. Nearly 1000 judges are present at the site of competition. D. US$4 million awards and prizes are offered by Intel alone.C Where shoul d an adventurous tourist go? After you’ve done sightseeing in London, shopping in New York, enjoyed the localfood in Paris, and danced to your heart’s content at the Brazilian carnival, where else can you go? What attractive tourist destination awaits you? Well, Antarctica sounds like the holiday of a lifetime! It's considered the last great wilderness on Earth. Just a few scientists in research stations share the icy landscape with penguins and other animals which can struggle with the low temperatures. Tourism began in Antarctica in the 1950s and it's still small part. And they're likely to engage in the discussion about global warming, which has led to the melting of glaciers. According to Rix, guidelines are followed when you’re about to set foot in Antarctica and tourists have to disinfect(消毒)their boots to make sure no alien species are introduced. And once on land, there's no eating or smoking. Rocks, bone fragments―nothing should be taken as a souvenir and nothing should be left behind. Tourists fortunate enough to visit the Antarctic must be aware that this is not their home and keep their fingers crossed that future generations will also be able to enjoy such breathtaking views. 28. Who lives in Antarctica? A. 37,000 tourists. B. The BBC's Juliet Rix. C.A few scientists and animals. D. People in London and Paris.29. Why can tourism be good for Antarctica? A. People can bring some animals into it. B. People may take interest in the protection of it. C. People can give advice to the native population. D. People will go to the coastline to play with the seals. 30. What are the guidelines when you go on the shore?A. You can leave rubbish on the shore.B. You can smoke and eat on the shore.C. You can take something as souvenirs.D. You can help to protect the environment. 31. What is the author’s attitude towards the tourists going to Antarctica? A. Positive.B. Ambiguous.C. Subjective.D. Negative. D Until recently, scientists had mapped only about 20 percent of the sea floor. They all are buried deep underneath the ocean floor. David Sandwell says the map is a powerful tool for fisheries, those interested in protecting the environment and for oil exploration. “The petrol exploration industry is interested in how to reconnect the continents, bring them back together tectonically so you can map the basins on one continental edge―say, Africa―and use that to establish where the similar basin would be on the other continental e dge in South America.” If scientists know that information, they may be able to find oil fields. The new data also will help scientists improve their estimates of ocean depths. This information can help ships travel safely and improve military operations and scientific projects worldwide. Mr. Sandwell thinks scientists will make many more discoveries as they examine the new map and the information it provides. 32. Which one is not mentioned about the benefits brought by the new map? AWould you eat a ready meal from the fridge rather than cook from scratch? Have you been doing Internet shopping rather than going to the stores? What can’t you be bothered to do?A study into how lazy British people are h as found more than half of adults are so idle that they’d catch the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs.Just over 2,000 people were interviewed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health, Britain’s largest health charity. The results were surprising.About one in six people surveyed said if their remote control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up.More than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus. Worryingly, of the 654 respondents with children, 64% said they were often too tired to play with them. This led the report to conclude that it’s no wonder that one in six children in the UK are classified as obese before they start school. Dr.SarahDauncey, medical dir ector of Nuffield Health, said, “People need to get fitter, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of their families, friends and evidently their pets too. If we don’t start to take control of this problem, a whole generation will become toounfit t o perform even the simple tasks.”And Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, was shamed as the most indolent city in the UK, with 75% surveyed admitting they do not get enough exercise, followed closely by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67%.The results pose serious challenges for the National Health Service, where obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on a steady increase for the past 40 years and are costing billions of pounds every year.21. What do lazy British people probably choose to do?A. Go to stores.B. Catch the lift.C. Cook from scratch.D. Climb flights of stairs.22. It was, however, the protestant missionaries(传教士)from New England who first arrived in 1820 that first introduced Christmas to the Hawaiian people. The missionaries reduced the Hawaiian language to written form, enabling the Hawaiian people to read and write in their own language. Many words for which there were no clear Hawaiian language equivalents(对应词)were translated phonetically.Let’s look at some key phrases that you may hear in Hawaii during the Christmas and New Year’s Day holiday season.•Mele Kalikimaka —Merry Christmas. The words “Mele Kalikimaka” are a phonetic translation. When the missionaries and other Westerners first brought the custom of Christmas to the islands, the Hawaiians had difficulty pronouncing “Merry Christmas” and turned it into words that rolled more easily off their tongues.•Hau’oli Makahiki Hou — Happy New Year. The western Christmas and New Year fell during this same time of the year when the Hawaiians traditionally honored the earth for giving them plenty to eat. This period of resting and feasting was called Makahiki (mahkahHEEkee). It lasted for 4 months, and no wars or conflicts were allowed during this time. Because makahiki also means “year”,the Hawaiian phrase for “Happy New Year” became “Hau’oli (happy) Makahiki (year) Hou (new)”.•Mele Kalikimaka me ka Hau’oli Makahiki Hou — Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.•Mahalo Nui Loa —Thank you very much. When you receive a nice gift or are treated to a special meal or beautiful song, you’ll wan t to express your appreciation for the kindness.25. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?A. The Hawaiian people had no written language before 1820.B. Christmas celebration became popular in Hawaii in 1778.C. Captain Cook had the greatest influence on the Hawaiian people.D. The missionaries forced the Hawaiian people to change their language.26. The underlined word “phonetically” in Paragraph 2 probably means “____”A. by meaningB. by soundC. by appearanceD. by form27. Makahiki is a traditional time for the Hawaiian people to ________.A. celebrate the New YearB. show thanks to GodC. show thanks to the earthD. go for holidays28. What is the text mainly about?A. How the Hawaiian people celebrate their holidays.B. The development of the Hawaiian language.C. How Christmas was brought to the Hawaiian people.D. Some phrases used in Hawaii during festivals.CLook at the keyboard of any standard typewriter or computer. “Q,W,E,R, T and Y” are the first six letters.Who decided on this arrangement of the letters? And why?People tried for centuries to invent the typewriter. In 1714 in England,Henry Mill filed a patent for a machine called an artificial machine or method for the impressing or transcribing of letters, singly or progressively one after another, as in writing, whereby all writing may be engrossed(用大字体书写) in paper or parchment so neat and exact as not to be distinguished from print. That machine probably didn’t sell because no one could remember its name! The first practical typewriter was patented in the United States in 1868 by Christopher Latham Sholes. His machine was known as the type-writer.It had a movable carriage,a lever(杠杆) for turning paper from line to line, and a keyboard on which the letters were arranged in alphabetical order. But Sholes had a problem. On his first model, his “ABC” key arrangement caused the keys to jam when the typist worked quickly.Sholes didn’t know how to keep the keys from sticking,so his solution was to keep the typist from typing too fast.Sholes asked his brother-in-1aw to rearrange the keyboard so that the commonest letters were not so close together and the type bars would come from opposite directions. Thus they would not clash together and jam the machine. The new arrangement was the QWERTY arrangement typists use today.Of course,Sholes claimed that the new arrangement was scientific and would add speed and efficiency. The only efficiency it added was to slow the typist down, since alm ost any word in the English language required the typist’s fingers to cover more distance on the keyboard. The advantages of the typewriter outweighed the disadvantages of the keyboard.Typists memorized the crazy letter arrangement, and the typewriter became a huge success.By the time typists had memorized the new arrangement of letters and built their speed, typewriter technology had improved, and the keys didn’t stick as badly as they had at first.29.The author thinks the machine invented by Henry Mill could not be sold because__________. A.it was difficult for people to accept new thingsB.there were great disadvantages of the key boardC.the machine could not be distinguished from printD.the name of the machine was too long30.Sholes decided the QWERT arrangement of the keyboard in order to________.A.arrange the letters in alphabetical orderB.cause the keys to jam when the typist worked quicklyC.solve the problem of the keys jammingD.compete with “ABC”key arrangement31.It is inferred that the QWERTV arrangement of the keyboard______.A.is the most scientific arrangement B.adds speed and efficiency of typistsC.keeps the typist from typing too fast D.is easy for typists to memorizeDWe’ve been covering standing desks for a long time now because e xperts agree that sitting all day is killing us.We want to be productive while also keeping our bodies healthy.Over the years, there have been several solutions to this, from fixed standing desks toadjustable ones, from portable desks to ones that change into shelves. However, the most high tech and elegant solution has to be this newsmart desk called The Stir Kinetic Desk. The desk learns your dailybehaviors and moves between a sitting and standing height regularlythroughout the day to keep you moving without interrupting your workflow. You can program specific sitting and standing intervals or let the deskset the schedule. If you tend to sit while returning emails in the morning, but always want to stand during that afternoon conference call, the deskwill learn those regular habits and adjust the schedule to fit them. Ofcourse, the desk can always be manually lowered or raised by using the touch screen on the lower left corner of the desk. When switching positions, the desk gently dips and rises to let you know that a change is coming up.If you’re not ready to switch positions at that time, you can tap the touchscreen to stay sitting or standing for a while longer. The built-in(内置) touchscreen also keeps track of your daily sitting and standing times and tells you how many calories you’ve burned. You can even set goals for how long or often you want to stand. The desk also works with fitness devices like the FitBit to track your movements. All of that smart tech doesn’t come cheap, though. The M1 desk, which is the everyday model, runs a steep $2,990,while the more executive model with added features, the F1,goes for $4,190.While expensive,it’s worth thinking of how much time we spend at our desks.Much like a good mattress(床垫),a good desk that works with you is worth the investment.Hopefully in a few years these smart, integrated desks will be more common and less expensive.32.The Stir Kinetic Desk has been designed to_______.A.help users with their workB.keep users moving all the timeC.get users to exercise while workingD.remind users of their working schedule33.Which is the feature of the touchscreen of the desk?A.It can tell users when to change positions.B.It can track users’ changes of positions.C.It can keep users in a fixed position.D.It can d etect users’ health condition.34.Which of the following can best describe the desk?A.Productive but challenging.B.Convenient but unaffordable.C.Complex and impractical.D.Multi-functional and intelligent.35.What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?A.To spend money on such a desk is rewarding.B.We should get such a desk as soon as possible.C.It won’t be long before the desk is widely used.D.Desks play a very important role in our daily life.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
