I should have paid a man to do it, but foolishly confident in my driving ability, I decided to hire a lorry and drive it myself.Moving the lorry backward in my yard, I crashed into a small shed, causing permanent damage. Fortunately, I owned the shed. I loaded up with the furniture and set out. By now it was rush hour. My nerves broke down, as I drove the huge lorry through the streets nervously. At last I arrived at Charlotte Street and found an available parking space. I moved the lorry into it only to notice three people at a pavement cafe waving to me. I got out, trembling violently, like one who had justfinished a stormy Atlantic crossing. “You’ve hit the car parked behind you,” they said. I examined the car. There were white scratches on its front face. It bore a disabled sign. So, now I was a bad driver and a bad man. Under the severe look of the three, I left an apologetic note on the da maged car’s windscreen, giving my phone number.I unloaded the furniture, dripping the sweat, wanting only to escape from the monster. I drove it back to its base at Edgware. On arrival, the boss told me I must fill it up with petrol before returning it. “Just charge me,”I cried, still shaking with fear. He stared at me with understanding. No doubt he’d witnessed others in this state before. “How about I drive you to a petrol station, you fill up, and I drive it back?” he asked. He danced the great lorry through the traffic so carefully that it would have shamed me if I had not been so grateful.24.The man felt ______ to have delivered the furniture himself.A.grateful B.regretfulC.proud D.confident25.The man trembled violently because ______.A.he caused a terrible traffic accident B.driving the lorry was too difficult for himC.he was afraid to see the three people D.the furniture was too heavy for him26.The man said he was a bad man most probably because ______.A.he made the traffic accident on purposeB.he parked the big lorry on the pavementC.he shouldn’t have driven the lorry himselfD.he shouldn’t have caused trouble for the disabled27.The writer intended to suggest that ______.A.it was exciting to drive a lorry B.it was hard to avoid accidentsC.being too confident is foolish D.the boss was expert in drivingCDifferent contexts affect food production, processing, trade, marketing and consumption. As a result of this, the food availability, accessibility, and affordability— as well as cons umers’ dietary behaviour and nutritional status—vary. One possible picture is presented here to provide an idea on how COVID-19 might impact the global food system.Consumer demand plays a crucial role in food production and their demands depend on purchasing power and preference. Because of the lockdown, there is no work for many people. As a result, they do not have enough money to buy adequate food for their families. The closure of restaurants, school meals and tourism businesses may reduce the demand for fresh food. People buy frozen. dried and canned food with longer shelf life. Energy-dense, less nutritious foods are often more affordable than fresh and nutritious one.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 is not likely to be transmitted through food. However, workers can get infected by each other if they do not maintain social distance properly. Shortage of labor can not only hamper food production, but also the processing of food.Around the world, millions of people depend on international trade either for then- livelihood or food security. The virus outbreak might slow down global trade and marketing of food. As a result, countries depending on imported food can face difficulties. The closure of ports and other supply restrictions will hamper food supply. The price of transferring food within and outside of the country may get more expensive. It means import may get more expensive and export may bring less money. On the other hand, the restriction in transport and supply can be the cause of food loss particularly for fresh fruits and vegetables. Companies may face difficulties to import the ingredients for different products which may disturb the production.28.The passage is mainly about ________.A.why the food system is easily affected by COVID-19B.how the world may be affected by COVID-19 outbreakC.what effect COVID-19 may have on the food systemD.what contexts affect food production29.How is consumers’ dietary behavior changing now?A.They are eating more fresh food. B.Inadequate ingredients.C.Increased processed food. D.Limited transport and supply.DIt was the first family ski weekend in Colorado. I was tired and considered quitting it. But I figured I should push through—if I skipped out, then the kids would think that they could too. After dropping the kids at ski school, my husband and I charted our course on the mountain map. Then, I pushed off and three minutes later, my right ski inverted (倒转的) and took my leg with it... I still remember hearing the crack.I was taken down the mountain in an ambulance. After surgery I woke up with my leg bandaged beyond recognition, my mouth dry and my mind confused. I wouldn’t walk for three months, optimistically. I couldn’t drive. I couldn’t navigate the steps in our house. I couldn’t even shower on my own. I turned to Adam and asked, “How are we going to manage?” “We’ll figure it out,” Adam said. I nodded, because what was the alternative? But nowhere in any of my cells did I believe him. Not even a tiny bit.But something unexpected happened: my children learned to be both autonomous and empathetic. They ran up the steps each day after school to check on me. Without the luxury of my packing their lunches orensuring that their homework was filed, they learned to do it themselves. And my husband too! The man previously had to be told what to do and when to do it, and sometimes why too. When I went down on the mountain, he attended to my every need, as he said to me once, “After all the years that you did so much, it was my turn to show up.”Sometimes—many times—both in life and in marriage, you hope for the sunset overlooking the ocean off a deserted beach, but what you get is a drive to physical therapy. That’s OK. When I went down on that mountain, I worried that my injury would upend everything. It turns out that it did.32.What can be inferred about the mother before the accident?A.She enjoyed herself in the ski. AIn the last 50 years, sea surface temperatures around Antarctica have risen by 1-2°C, which is more than twice the global average.Loss of speciesGlobal warming could basically change the ecosystem, leading to the loss of some species. Sharks are going to arrive in Antarctica as long as the warming trend continues, a bit more slowly than crabs-crabs are going to get there first, but once they do get there they are able to eat the organisms that live there.Professor Wilga said the arrival of sharks and shell-crushing bony fishes would lead to great changes in the number and proportions(比例)of species found there.Shrimp, ribbon worms and brittle stars are likely to be the most attackable to population declines. Animals living in shallow water in Antarctica are unique on Earth today because they evolved(进化)in a very cold environment over tens of millions of years.Extreme conditionsIn the course of a process we call Antarctic cooling that started about 40 million years ago, all major seafloor predators such as sharks and crabs went extinct in Antarctica because they were not able to deal with these extreme conditions. However, today global warming is removing barriers to invasions and we’ve seen recently that crabs, especially king crabs, are on the doorstep of Antarctica-they can potentially re-invade the shallow waters if warming continues.Urgent local and global actions are needed to protect this last environment and measures are needed to stop alien species being brought in through ships.Strange creaturesAnimals that live on the seafloor of Antarctica are some of the strangest creatures on Earth. The extreme cold and darkness has presented huge challenges to marine life over the passage of time, leading to the evolution of fish equipped with anti- freeze proteins in their blood.1.How will these alien species affect the ecosystem in Antarctica?A.They will change the extremely cold conditions in Antarctica.B.They will change the numbers and proportions of species in Antarctica.C.The sea surface temperature of Antarctica will rise more quickly.D.The number of shrimp and ribbon worms will increase in Antarctica.2.How does the author feel about the alien species’ invasion to Antarctica?A.Worried. B.Doubtful. C.Satisfied. D.Excited.3.Which is the best title of this passage?A.Creatures in Antarctica Are UniqueB.The Extreme Conditions in AntarcticaC.Alien Species Are Not Found in AntarcticaD.Alien Species May Change Antarctic EcosystemBAs seniors in college looking forward to life’s next goals-graduation and employment-it is essential to have a sense of feeling important. Every time I look through job listings, there is a small, and sometimes not so small current running through my mind, spitting out little charges that are meant to stop me from even applying. The charges come in the form of words that seem to shout out like “It is not even worth trying!” or “You look as if you were a qualified man...”I met with a professor last week about a specific posting that really got me excited. Maybe the first time I could actually imagine myself in a position. I do not want to tell you which one because then there will be one more person applying for it. However, the professor said to me, “You and thousands of other people are interested in that job.” His response successfully dampened(抑制)my initial enthusiasm. So I went back to work on my cover letter, feeling like one little itty-bitty(极小的)sardine swimming in a school of thousands, with far less motivation than I had initially.Of course, the realities are good, and we should never feel deserving of, or entitled to, a position. I would say there are only a few select students out there. The cream, who has academic advantages, would be sure to stand out. The rest of us, struggling through our course loads, are the crop. But being the crop does not make us any less important! The point is that, like the old Hasidic story goes in Jewish tradition, we should always remember to carry two slips of paper in our pockets, especially during times of challenge and transition. When feeling beat down, or lost within a school of sardines, take out one slip of paper that says “For my sake, the world was created”. But for fear that you become a person filled with self-importance, carry a second slip of paper to serve as a gentle reminder, “I am but dust and ashes.”4.What does the author imply in Paragraph 1?A.He doesn’t want to work after graduation.B.He has no confidence in finding a good job.C.He tries to behave himself after graduation.D.He shows no interest in most jobs in the list.5.After talking with the professor, the author was ________.A.inspired B.confused C.discouraged D.embarrassed6.What does the underlined part “the crop” in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.The plants in the field. B.Common members of a group.C.Those who enjoy their life. D.Those who are tied to a position.7.What’s suggested in the last paragraph?A.Control our feelings when faced with different problems.B.Read as many old stories as possible in our daily life.C.Learn how to make ourselves important to others.D.Understand the function of two sheets of paper.CInternet time tied to teen depression(抑郁) symptomsSpending time online is normal behaviour for teenagers. But too much Internet use by teens —or too little, for that matter —might be related to depression, a new study finds. The findings, reported in the journal of Pediatrics, do not mean that the Internet is to blame. For one, teens in the study who spent no time online were also at increased risk of depression symptoms. Instead, the researchers say that both heavy Internet use, and non-use, could serve as signals that a teenager is having a hard time. For the study, Dr Pierre-Andre Michaud and his colleagues at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, surveyed 7,200 individuals aged 16 to 20 about their Internet use. Those who w ere online more than two hours per day were considered “heavy” Internet users, while those online anywhere from several times per week to two hours per day were considered “regular” users. The teenagers also answered a number of health-related questions, including some standard questions about "depressive tendencies” that gauge(判定) how often a person feels sad or hopeless. Compared with regular Internet users, the study found, kids who were heavy users or non-users were more likely to be depressed or very depressed.Among male teens, heavy users and non-users were both around one-third more likely to have a high depression score, compared to “regular” users. Among girls, heavy Internet users had an 86 percent greater chance of depression, while non-users had a 46 percent greater likelihood compared to regular users. That was with factors like family income and any chronic health problems taken into account.Since teenagers typically go online to contact with friends, the researchers speculate(推测) that those who are never online may be more socially isolated.8.How long are those who are online per day considered “heavy” Internet users?A.More than two hours. B.More than eight hours.C.More than twelve hours. D.More than ten hours.9.What’s the purpose of Dr Michaud and his colleagues’ study?A.To know the actual number of teenagers online.B.To know the actual time of teenagers online.C.To know the influence of study online on teenagers.D.To know the relationship between the Internet use and depression.10.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “isolated” in the last paragraph?A.Independent B.UnitedC.Separated. D.Capable.11.According to the accounts of the sixth paragraph, what can we conclude?A.Non-users of Internet aren’t likely to be depressed.B.Among girls, heavy Internet users are more likely to suffer depression than regular users. C.Heavy users will lead to death unless limited.D.Non-users have more possibility to be depressed than heavy users.DA study, conducted by David Evans of the World Bank and Anna Popova of Stanford University, looked at 19 programs around the world in which individuals were given cash transfers from the government, either as a handout or as a “reward” for something like getting kids to school on tim e or taking them to the doctor for checkups.Evans and Popova looked at the impact those cash transfers had on the family budget and whether or not they led to an increase in spending on alcohol and cigarettes .What they found was that they almost always led to a reduction in a family’s alcohol and tobacco purchases. The news may surprise some people, but it’s true, and the researchers have several theories about why.One theory is that the cash transfer made things possible that once seemed impossible .Investing in their kids’ education or buying healthier and more expensive foods may be within reach now, but without the cash handout, these goals weren’t even a possibility. So families cut back on other expenses (like alcohol and tobacco) to make those dreams a reality.Another theory is that peopl e just generally seem to do what they’re told.If they are given money and told to use it for their family’s welfare, in most cases, they will do just that. And that leads to the third theory: These cash transfers are usually given to women, and studies show that when women control the purse strings, more money is spent on taking care of their children.Whatever the reason for the trend, the data is clear—families that receive cash handouts don’t waste the money on booze and cigarettes as was previously thought .Instead, they typically use that money for the benefit of their families. And that’s money well spent.12.The study proves that .A.cash transfers help poor families get what would seem unavailable otherwiseB.cash should be given to poor people as a reward for something good for kidsC.given cash handouts, poor people would spend the money on alcohol and tobaccoD.poor people would save the cash given by the government for emergency needs13.A cash transfer led to a reduction in a f amily’s alcohol and tobacco purchases because .A.the education gained with the cash would help them drop alcohol and tobaccoB.the money previously for alcohol and tobacco would help realize their dreamC.buying healthier and more expensive foods left less money for alcohol and tobaccoD.that was the promise made before the cash transfer was given to the poor family14.In paragraph 5, when the author said “women control the purse strings”, he just meant “ ”.A.women are told what to do B.women are given the moneyC.women know what to do with the money D.women have the final word for money15.The passage mainly tells us .A.how the study was carried outB.why cash transfer is preferredC.the findings of a study and explanations to themD.the theories for a study about cash transfers第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

During one interview, she noticed that the candidate never made direct eye contact. She was puzzled and somewhat disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise. He had a perfect résumé and gave good responses to her questions, but the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustwo rthy,〞so she decided to offer the job to her second choice.“It wasn’t until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person,〞Tiffany confesses. What she hadn’t known at the time of the interview was that the candidate’s “different〞behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding. He was an Asian-American raised in a household where respect for those in authority was shown by averting (避开) your eyes.“I was just thrown off by the lack of eye contact; not realizing it was cultural,〞Tiffany says. “I missed out, but will not miss that opportunity again.〞Many of us have had similar encounters with behaviors we perceive as different. As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces more diverse, it is becoming essential to expand our understanding of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions.Hire AdvantageAt a time when hiring qualified people is becoming more difficult, employers who can eliminate invalid biases (偏见) from the process have a distinct advantage. My company, Mindsets LLC, helps organizations and individuals see their own blind spots. A real estate recruiter we worked with illustrates the positive difference such training can make.“During my Mindsets coaching session, I was ta ught how to recruit a diversified workforce. I recruited people from different cultures and skill sets. The agents were able to utilize their full potential and experiences to build up the company. When the real estate market began to change, it was because we had a diverse agent pool that we were able to say in the real estate market much longer than others in the same profession.〞Blinded by GenderDale is an account executive who attended one of my workshops on supervising a diverse workforce. “Through one of the sessions, I discovered my personal bias,〞he recalls. “I learned I had not been looking at a person as a whole person, and being open to differences.〞In his case, the blindness was not about culture but rather gender.“I had a management pos ition open in my department; and the two finalists were a man and a woman. Had I not attended this workshop, I would have automatically assumed the man was the best candidate because the position required quite a bit of extensive travel. My reasoning would have been that even though both candidates were great and could have been successful in the position, I assumed the woman would have wanted to be home with her children and not travel.〞Dale’s assumptions are another example of the well-intentioned but in correct thinking that limits an organization’s ability to tap into the full potential of a diverse workforce.“I learned from the class that instead of imposing my gender biases into the situation, I needed to present the full range of duties, responsibilities and expectations to all candidates and allow them to make an informed decision.〞Dale credits the workshop, “because it helped me make decisions based on fairness.〞Year of the Know-It-AllDoug is another supervisor who attended one of my workshops. He recalls a major lesson learned from his own employee.“One of my most embarrassing moments was when I had a Chinese-American employee put in a request to take time off to celebrate Chinese New Year. In my ignorance, I assumed he had his dates wrong’, as the first of January had just passed. When I advised him of this, I gave him a tong talking-to about turning in requests early with the proper dates.“He patiently waited, then when I was done, he said he would like Chinese New Year off, not the We stern New Year. He explained politely that in his culture the new year did not begin January first, and that Chinese New Year, which is tied to the lunar cycle, is one of the most celebrated holidays on the Chinese calendar. Needless to say, I felt very embarrassed in assuming he had his dates mixed up. But I learned a great deal about assumptions, and that the timing of holidays varies considerably from culture to culture.“Attending the diversity workshop helped me realize how much I could learn by simp ly asking questions and creating dialogues with toy employees, rather than making assumptions and trying to be a know-it-all,〞Doug admits. “The biggest thing I took away from the workshop is learning how to be more ‘inclusive’ to differences.〞A Better Bottom LineAn open mind about diversity not only improves organizations internally, it is profitable as well. These comments from a customer service representative show how an inclusive attitude can improve sales. “Most of my customers speak English as a second language. One of the best things my company has done is to contract with a language service that offers translations over the phone. It wasn’t until my boss received Mindsets’ training that she was able to understand how important inclusiveness wa s to customer service. As a result, our customer base has increased.〞Once we start to see people as individuals, and discard the stereotypes, we can move positively toward inclusiveness for everyone. Diversity is about coming together and taking advantage of our differences and similarities. It is about building better communities and organizations that enhance us as individuals and reinforce our shared humanity. When we begin to question our assumptions and challenge what we think we have learned from our past, from the media, peers, family, friends, etc., we begin to realize that some of our conclusions are flawed(有缺陷的) or contrary to our fundamental values. We need to train ourselves to think differently, shift our mindsets and realize that diversity opens doors for all of us, creating opportunities in organizations and communities that benefit everyone.28. Tiffany’s misjudgment about the candidate stemmed from _______.A. racial stereotypesB. invalid personal biasC. cultural ignoranceD. emphasis on physical appearance29. What kind of organization is Mindsets LLC?A. A real estate agency.B. A personnel training company.C. A cultural exchange organization.D. A hi-tech company.30. After one of the workshops, account executive Dale realized that ____.A. he had hired the wrong personB. he could have done more for his companyC. he had not managed his workforce wellD. he must get rid of his gender bias31. What did Dale think of Mindsets LLC’s workshop?A. It was well-intentioned but poorly conducted.B. It tapped into the executives’ full potential.C. It helped him make fair decisions.D. It met participants’ diverse needs.DThat’s enough, kidsIt was a lovely day at the park and Stella Bianchi was enjoying the sunshine with her two children when a young boy, aged about four, approached her two-year-old son and pushed him to the ground.“I’d watched him for a little while and my son was the fourth or fifth child he’d shoved,〞she says.〞I went over to them, picked up my son, turned to the boy and s aid, firmly, ’No, we don’t push,〞What happened next was unexpected.“The boy’s mother ran toward me from across the park,〞Stella says,〞I thought she was coming over to apologize, but instead she started shouting at me for disciplining her child, All I did was let him know his behavior was unacceptable. Was I supposed to sit back while her kid did whatever he wanted, hurting other children in the process?〞Getting your own children to play nice is difficult enough. Dealing with other people’s children has become a minefield. In my house, jumping on the sofa is not allowed. In my sister’s house it’s encouraged. For her, it’s about kids being kids:〞If you can’t do it at three, when can you do it?〞Each of these philosophies is valid and, it has to be said, m y son loves visiting his aunt’s house. But I find myself saying “no〞a lot when her kids are over at mine. That’s OK between sisters but becomes dangerous territory when you’re talking to the children of friends or acquaintances.“Kids aren’t all raised th e same,〞agrees Professor Naomi White of Monash University.〞But there is still an idea that they’re the property of the parent. We see our children as an extension of ourselves, so if you’re saying that my child is be having inappropriately, then that’s so mehow a criticism of me.〞In those circumstances, it’s difficult to know whether to approach the child directly or the parent first. There are two schools of thought.“I’d go to the child first,〞says Andrew Fuller, author of Tricky Kids. Usually a quiet r eminder that ’we don’t do that here’ is enough. Kids nave finely tuned antennae (直觉) for how to behave in different settings.〞He points out bringing it up with the parent first may make them feel neglectful, which could cause problems. Of course, approaching the child first can bring its own headaches, too. This is why White recommends that you approach the parents first. Raise your concerns with the parents if they’re there and ask them to deal with it,〞she says.Asked how to approach a parent in this situation, psychologist Meredith Fuller answers:〞Explain your needs as well as stressing the importance of the friendship. Preface your remarks with something like: ’I know you’ll think I’m silly but in m y house I don’t want…’〞When it comes to situations wh ere you’re caring for another child, white is straightforward: “common sense must prevail. If things don’t go well, then have a chat.〞There’re a couple of new grey areas. Physical punishment, once accepted from any adult, is no longer appropriate. “A new set of considerations has come to the fore as part of the debate about how we handle children.〞For Andrew Fuller, the child-centric nature of our society has affected everyone:〞The rules are different now from when today’s parents were growing up,〞he sa ys, “Adults are scared of saying: ’don’t swear’, or asking a child to stand up on a bus. They’re worried that there will be conflict if they point these things out – either from older children, or their parents.〞He sees it as a loss of the sense of common public good and public courtesy (礼貌), and says that adults suffer form it as much as child.Meredith Fuller agrees: “A code of conduct is hard to create when you’re living in a world in which everyone is exhaustedfrom overwork and lack of sleep, and a world in which nice people are perceived to finish last.〞“it’s about what I’m doing and what I need,〞Andrew Fuller says. 〞the days when a kid came home from school and said, “I got into trouble〞. And dad said, ‘you probably deserved it’. Are over. Now the parents are charging up to the school to have a go at teachers.〞This jumping to our children’s defense is part of what fuels the “walking on eggshells〞feeling that surrounds our dealings with other people’s children. You know that if you remonstrate(劝诫) with the child, you’re going to have to deal with the parent. it’s admirable to be protective of our kids, but is it good?“Children have to learn to negotiate the world on their own, within reasonable boundaries,〞White says. “I suspect that it’s only cer tain sectors of the population doing the running to the school –better –educated parents are probably more likely to be too involved.〞White believes our notions of a more child-centred, it’s a way of talking about treating our children like commodities(商品). We’re centred on them but in ways that reflect positively on us. We treat them as objects whose appearance and achievements are something we can be proud of, rather than serve the best interests of the children.〞One way over-worked, under-resourced parents show commitment to their children is to leap to their defence. Back at the park, Bianchi’s intervention(干预) on her son’s behalf ended in an undignified exchange of insulting words with the other boy’s mother. As Bianchi approached the park bench where she’d been sitting, other mums came up to her and congratulated her on taking a stand. “Apparently the boy had a longstanding reputation for bad behaviour and his mum for even worse behaviour if h e was challenged.〞Andrew Fuller doesn’t believe that we should be afraid of dealing with other people’s kids. “look at kids that aren’t your own as a potential minefield,〞he says. He recommends that we don’t stay silent over inappropriate behaviour, particularly with regular visitors.32. What did Stella Bianchi expect the young boy’s mother to do when she talked to him?A. make an apologyB. come over to interveneC. discipline her own boyD. take her own boy away33. Due to the child-centric nature of our society,A. parents are worried when their kids swear at themB. people think it improper to criticize kids in publicC. people are reluctant to point our kids’ wrongdoingsD. many conflicts arise between parents and their kids34. In a world where everyone is exhausted from over work and lack of sleep, .A. it’s easy for people to become impatientB. it’s difficult to create a code of conductC. it’s important to be friendly to everybodyD. it’s hard for people to admire each other35. How did people use to respond when their kids got into trouble at school?A. they’d question the teachersB. they’d charge up to the schoolC. they’d tell the kids to clam downD. They’d put the blame on their kids第二节〔共5小题;每题2分,总分值10分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最正确选项。

He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teac her had referred him to me. “This boy has lost his family,” he wrote. “He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I’m very worried about him. Can you help?”I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problemspsychology doesn’t have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically. The first two times we met, David didn’t say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children’s drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon—in plete silence and without looking at me. It’s not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sure Dav id won once or twice.Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my pany. But why did he never look at me?“Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought. “Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.” Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.“It’s your turn,” he said. After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and Joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one—without any word—can reach out to another person. Tuesday is actually the best day of the week if you want to grab a bargain, according to an exhaustive analysis of on—line shopping. Thursday is the second best day followed by Friday—but Sunday is when you are least likely to make a saving. The study also looked at months and found that the pre—Christmas rush in November is when there are most bargains around on the web—and not the January sales. US retailer(零售商) reporting service Sum All examined 3,000 panies and half a billion transactions(交易) as part of its report. It worked out the average discount(折扣) offered to consumers on each day of the week and over different times of the year. The best day of the week was Tuesday where savings were 4.81 percent, followed by Thursday on 4.80 percent. In third place was Friday at 4.65 percent, then Wednesday at 4.13 percent and Monday at 4.11 percent. Only the foolish would shop on a Saturday where the discounts were typically 3.84 percent—and Sunday was the worst with 3.37 percent. The analysis by month is even more surprising as most people think that waiting until the post—Christmas sales would yield the biggest discounts. In fact, November is when you will get the largest savings at 5.99 percent on average. January came in second at 4.95 percent, followed by May at 4.50 percent. The worst month to buy online was March where you could expect to save just 2.76 percent. Consumers and experts have been speculating for years about the best time to shop online.Booking a flight has almost bee a science with some claiming that buying six weeks before you travel guarantees you the best price. However, a recent analysis by the US Airlines Reporting mission found that was not actually the case. Not only did the six—week window fail to pile up, in some cases the best fares were on sale as long as 24 weeks before departure. The ARC said that booking well in advance is best advised for busy routes or long haul flights(长途航班), as the price only tends to go up.28. If a buyer wants to buy cheap goods online, he’d better go to the shop on .A. TuesdayB. ThursdayC. FridayD. Sunday29. Most web sellers often provide bargain on the web .A. after New Year’s DayB. during Valentine’s DayC. on Mother’s DayD. before Christmas30. Which of the following statements is True according to the third paragraph?A. The best day of the week was Tuesday where savings were 4.8 percent.B. In third place was Thursday where savings were 4.65 percent.C. Sunday where the discounts were 3.37 percent was the worst.D. Customers can get the best sayings on Saturday.31. What is the me aning of the underlined word “speculating” in the fifth paragraph?A. Quarrelling.B. Objecting.C. Searching.D. Considering.DIt is widely known that any English conversation begins with The Weather. Such a fixation with the we ather finds expression in Dr. Johnson’s famous ment that “when two English meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson’s observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most mentators fail to e up with a convincing explanation for this English weather—speak.Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena. “The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.” According to him. the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.Bryson and Paxman stand for mon misunderstanding about the weather—speak among the English. Both mentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather—speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overe the natural reserve(内向) and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather—speak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank “fillers”. In other words, English weather—speak is a means of social bonding.32. The author mentions Dr. Johnson’s ment to show that .A. most mentators agree with Dr. JohnsonB. Dr. Johnson is famous for his weather observationC. the ment was accurate two hundred years agoD. English conversations usually start with the weather33. What does the underlined word “obsession” most probably refer to?A. A social trend.B. An strong interest.C. A historical concept.D. An unknown phenomenon.34. According to the passage, Jeremy Paxman believes that .A. Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weatherB. there is nothing special about the English weatherC. the English weather attracts people to the British IslesD. English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty35. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?A. To explain what English weather—speak is about.B. To analyse misconceptions about the English weather.C. To find fault with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.D. To convince people that the English weather is changeable.第二部分:七选五(每小题2分, 满分10分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上写出答案。

She pulled off her quilt. “Ezra,” she said. “If I could just have some water,” she told him. He poured it from the water-pot.She heard no ice cubes clinking (叮当声); they must have melted. Yet it seemed just minutes agothat he’d brought in a whole new supply. He raised her head, rested it on his shoulder, and tippedthe glass to her lips. Yes, half-heated —not that she minded. She drank gratefully, keeping hereyes closed. His shoulder felt steady and comforting. He laid her back down on the pillow.“DR. Vincent’s coming at ten,” he told her.“What time is it now?”“Eight-thirty.”“Eight-thirty in the morning?”“Yes.”“Have you been here all night?” she asked.“I slept a little."“Sleep now. If Dr. Vincent found out he would take her out ofher own bed, her own house, and send her off to Union Memorial, tent her over with plastic.“Maybe you should cancel the doctor altogether,” she told Ezra. “I’m very much improved, Ibelieve.”“Let him decide that.”“Well I know how my awn self feels, Ezra.”“We won’t argue about it just now,” he said.24. We never moved a muscle all night, but waked at early dawn in the originalpositions, and got up at once, thoroughly refreshed. There is no end of medicine in such anexperience. That morning we could have defeated ten such people as we were the day before —sick ones at any rate. But the world is slow, and people will go to “water cures”and “movementcures” and to foreign lands for health. Three months of camp life on Lake Tahoe would bring backEgyptian mummy to life, and give him a healthy appetite. I do not mean the oldest anddriestmummies, of course, but fresher ones. The air up there in the clouds is very pure and fine. Andwhy shouldn’t it be? —it is the same the angels breathe. I chink that hardly any amount oftiredness can be gathered together that a man cannot sleep off in one night on the sand by itsside. Not under a roof, but under the sky; it seldom or never rains there in the summertime. Iknow a man who went there to die. But he made a failure of it. He was a skeleton (骨瘦如柴的人)when he came, and could barely stand. He had no appetite, and did nothing but read tracts (小册子) and reflect on the future. Three months later he was sleeping out of doors regularly, eating allhe could hold, three times a day, and hunting game over the mountains three thousand feet highfor fun. And he was a skeleton no longer, but weighed part of a ton. This is no fancy sketch, butthe truth. His disease was consumption. I confidently recommend his experience to other skeletons. —MarkTwain28. Which of the following is the topic of the passage?A. How to live near Lake Tahoe.B. The imagination of Lake Tahoe.C.
