2007年12月英语四级作文题及范文

2007年12月英语四级作文题及范文English:In December 2007, the English writing section of the College English Test Band 4 (CET-4) in China presented students with the following essay topic: "My View on University Ranking". In this essay, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of university rankings. On the one hand, university rankings can provide valuable information for students and parents when choosing universities, as they reflect the overall quality and reputation of institutions. Rankings can also encourage healthy competition among universities, driving them to improve their teaching and research standards. However, on the other hand, university rankings may oversimplify the complex nature of higher education, focusing too much on research output and international reputation while neglecting other important factors such as teaching quality, student satisfaction, and community engagement. Moreover, rankings can create a sense of elitism, with students and institutions striving for a higher position rather than focusing on personal and academic growth. In conclusion, while university rankings can be useful as a reference, they should not be the sole factor considered when choosing a university, and effortsshould be made to ensure that they accurately reflect the diverse missions and strengths of different institutions.中文翻译:在2007年12月,中国大学英语四级考试的写作部分提出了以下作文题目:“我对大学排名的看法”。

soon as the American colonies gained their independence from England.In1776,America’s Declaration of Independence declared that“all men are created equal”;44years later we were wrestling with a question:how can a nation founded on the idea of individual freedom reconcile itself with the existence of human slavery?In1819,22states were in the Union,11Free,11Slave.The South’s economy was based on the growing of cotton, and cotton was profitable only on the back s of slaves. As new states were admitted to the Union, the South wanted as many as possible to be slave states, not only to support their economy, but to prevent the North from obtaining a majority in Congress and quite possibly changing the Constitution to outlaw slavery completely. The issue came to a head when Missouri applied to be admitted as a slave state.Thomas Jefferson called the debate that began with Missouri“like a fireball in the night, which awakened me and filled me with terror.I considered it at once the knell(丧钟)of the nation.”War was avoided this time as compromise was reached and Missouri would be admitted as a slave state.Maine, the next state admitted to the Union, would be admitted as free, thereby preserving the balance of power in the Congress.By1860,when the new Republican Party nominated Abraham Lincoln for President, compromise would no longer work.Lincoln wanted to contain the spread of slavery. With Lincoln’s election in November of that year, the South felt that it was only a matter of time before the Southern States lost their slim Democratic Party majority to those who wished to abolish slavery. It was in this same year that John Wilkes Booth said that“So deep is my hatred for such men that I wish I had them in my grasp and I the power to crush.”Equally passionate,Lincoln held that America was the“Last Best Hope on Earth”for freedom. The United States was unique in the family of nations.Of all the nations in the world, only America was governed by her people.Kings,Queens,Princes or Emperors ruled all the old countries, where rights held by the government and given to the people. In America, rights were held by the people and given to the government. The irony was that the Old World had done away with slavery decades before, yet here the United State, beacon of Freedom–had human bondage (奴役).Lincoln said it himself,“the nation cannot exist half-slave and half-free,it must be all ofone thing or all of the other.”46.We learn from the first paragraph that________.A.the seeds of the American Civil War were sown when the nation was founded.B.John Wilkes Booth had plotted to kill Lincoln from the moment America gained itsindependenceC.all men in America obtained equal rights with the Declaration of IndependenceD.John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln at the end of a performance in Ford’s Theatre.47.The fundamental conflict between the Union and the South lies in_________.A.religious faithsB.political beliefsC.economic interestsD.geographic differences48.It can be inferred from the context of Para.4that________.A.John Wilkes Booth was one of the firebrands of the southB.the Democratic Party was strongly opposed to slaveryC.with the election of Lincoln the South lost its majority in CongressD.the Civil War could have been avoided if Lincoln had not won the election49.What did Lincoln wish to do when he became President of the United States?A.Make compromises.B.Prevent the spread of slavery.C.Strike a balance.D.Get prepared for war.50.In what way was America unique in the family of nations?A.It was the only nation that allowed the existence of slavery.B.It was the only nation that existed half-slave and half-free.C.It was the only nation whose government gave rights to the people.D.It was the only nation whose government was elected by the people.Passage2Back in1986,Noble Prize winner David Baltimore authored a paper that said that inserting a special mouse gene into a certain strain of mice caused changes in the host mouse’s antibodies–a finding that promised to be significant for genetic modification of the immune system.A postdoctoral researcher in the lab,Margot O’Toole, found she was unable to reproduce some of the reported results in her own experimental mice. Her attempts to resolve the problem with her immediate boss,Dr.Thereza Imanishi-Kari,led O’Toole to suspect defects or errors in the original research and she made her suspicions public. One thing led to another, and in time,O’Toole found herself in touch with two researchers at the National Institutes of Health(N.I.H.)Ned Feder and Walter Stewart, who had risen to public prominence in the mid-1980s as fraud-busters.These self-appointed watchdogs took up her cause with eagerness, and the nature of her complaints began to shift from claims of shoddiness to accusations of dishonesty and cover-up.Against a background of public anxiety about fraud in science, the case came before an N.I.H. scientific panel. The press began to portray(描绘)the idealistic O’Toole as a martyr sacrificed by her scientific seniors:it was said, wrongly, that she had lost her job and her home, and had beencold-shouldered by the establishment. The cover letter to a draft report from the mittee said Imanishi-Kari was guilty of“serious scientific misconduct”and accused Baltimore of a cover-up.The fact that he had stuck by his co-workers was read as proof of his arrogance and irritation at having his own authority challenged. The crucial time came in1989when Representative John Dingell pressed a series of Congressional hearings.A man dedicated to rooting out the misuse of Federal funding, not least by unaccountable scientists,he was handed a gift on a plate when Baltimore lost his cool under questioning, alleging that the investigation represented a threat to scientific freedom and implying that none but scientists had the right to monitor themselves, because they alone could understand how science works.Dingell then launched a humiliation exercise. He brought Secret Service to examine Imanishi-Kari’s lab notebooks in hopes of uncovering after-the-event tampering. The affair took on the air of a scientific Watergate, and science itself seemed to be on trial. This could not have come at a worse moment for Baltimore:he had just taken up a highly prestigious appointment as president of Rockefeller University.A whispering campaign, probably involving jealousies, forced Baltimore’s resignation after just18months.If the rise and fall of Baltimore seemed to unfold with all the inevitability of a Greek tragedy, there was, after a fashion,a happy ending.Eventually the pendulum(钟摆)of opinion started to swing.Dingell began to be represented as a latter-day Joseph McCarthy.Imanishi-Kari and Baltimore assumed O’Toole’s role of victim, seen as the targets of a new“Galileo trial”or a witch hunt being carried out by the“science police.”When Imanishi-Kari appealed against the findings, a further scientific review board was convened, and she was officially exonerated of(排除…嫌疑) fabrication. She got tenure, and in1997Baltimore,no longer typed as a conceited bigmouth but praised for his loyalty, was appointed president of the California Institute of Technology.51.The story took place when________.A.fraud in science was becoming a public concernB.Baltimore’s honesty as a scientist was being questionedC.there was a growing awareness of the misuse of Federal fundsD.genetic modification food seemed feasible52.In this story,O’Toole played the role of________.A.a victim of the witch hunt carried out by Representative John DingellB.an involuntary accomplice(同犯,帮凶)unfairly used by the science policeC.an honest researcher who dared to challenge a Nobel Prize winnerD.a martyr sacrificed by the scientific establishment53.What was the fatal mistake Baltimore made?A.He questioned the right of Congressmen to investigate the case.B.He stood by Imanishi-Kari and tried to cover up her misconduct.C.He played into his opponents’hands when he gave O’Toole the cold shoulder.D.He lost his cool and got irritated when his authority was challenged.54.Judging from the context,Joseph McCarthy was very probably a person who________.A.was notorious for starting the investigation of Galileo’s caseB.was a famous character in a Greek tragedy about a witch hunted unsupported accusations to obtain his own purposesD.was a man who was suspicious of new scientific discoveries55.It can be inferred from this passage that________.A.science police plays an important role in eradicating fraud in scienceB.scientists run great risks in advancing new theories about natureC.politicians have got no right to monitor the work of scientistsD.it is sometimes difficult to tell truth from falsehood in sciencePART V TRANSLATIONSection ADirections:Read the following passage in English carefully and translate it into Chinese in the space provided on the ANSWER SHEET.Online FriendshipIn so many ways, cyberspace mirrors the real world.People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips.Others buy and sell products.Still others look for friendship,or even love. Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen.Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace.Rather,a person’s thoughts—or at least the thoughts they type—are what really count. So even the shyest person can become a chat room ually, this“faceless”communication doesn’t create problems.Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies. In fact, this emphasis on the ideas themselves makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation. But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They’re looking for serious love relationships. Some of these relationships actually succeed.Others fail miserably.Section BDirections:Read the following passage in Chinese carefully and translate it into English in the space provided on the ANSWER SHEET.英语的重要性世界上有数千种语言,英语是世界上使用最广泛的语言之一。

2007年12月英语四级作文题及范文2007年12月英语四级作文题为:The Impact of Internet on People’s Life范文如下:With the rapid development of technology, the Internet has become an indispensable part of people's daily life. The Internet has brought about tremendous changes in the way we work, communicate, shop, and even entertain ourselves. In this essay, I will discuss the impact of the Internet on people's lives.First of all, the Internet has revolutionized the way we work. With the help of the Internet, we can easily access information, communicate with colleagues, and even work remotely. This has not only increased efficiency but also created more opportunities for people to work from home or start their own businesses. For example, many freelancers and digital nomads rely on the Internet to find clients and manage their projects.Secondly, the Internet has transformed the way we communicate. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have made it easier for us to connect with friends and family, no matter where they are in the world. We can share our thoughts, photos, and videos with a click of a button, and keep intouch with loved ones in real time. This has made communication more convenient and immediate than ever before.Furthermore, the Internet has changed the way we shop. Online shopping has become increasingly popular, with more and more people choosing to buy products and services online. This has not only made shopping more convenient but also opened up a world of possibilities for consumers. We can now purchase items from around the globe and have them delivered to our doorstep within days. Finally, the Internet has had a profound impact on the way we entertain ourselves. Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube have made it easier for us to access a wide variety of movies, TV shows, and videos on demand. 07年英语一 写作 大作文真题

07年英语一写作大作文真题2007年英语一写作大作文真题Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Do you think parents are the best teachers? You should write at least 250 words.Do You Think Parents Are the Best Teachers?Parents play a critical role in the upbringing of their children. They are the first teachers to teach us the fundamentals of life and guide us in the right direction. However, whether parents are the best teachers is a topic of debate. On one hand, parents possess an unparalleled understanding of their children. They have witnessed our growth and development from infancy to adulthood. They know our strengths, weaknesses, and deepest desires. With this intricate knowledge, parents can offer personalized guidance and support that no other teacher can provide. They can tailor their teachings to suit our individual needs and preferences, ensuring a more effective and relevant educational experience.Furthermore, parents act as moral compasses, instilling important values and beliefs in their children. They teach us the difference between right and wrong, the importance of honesty, integrity, and empathy. These life lessons form the foundation of our character and shape our moral compass for the future. Through their words and actions, parents teach us invaluable life skills that are essential for navigating the complexities of the world. On the other hand, parents may not always be the best teachers in certain areas. They may lack the expertise, knowledge, or experience required to teach specialized subjects such as mathematics, science, or literature. In such cases, professional teachers or tutors may be better equipped to provide a comprehensive and structured education that meets academic standards. Moreover, parents' biases, limitations, and personal beliefs may influence their teaching methods and hinder our intellectual growth. They may unintentionally impose their own perspectives and opinions on us, limiting our ability to think critically and independently. In contrast, teachers with diverse backgrounds and perspectives can offer a well-rounded education that exposes us to different viewpoints and encourages intellectual exploration. In conclusion, parents are undoubtedly important teachers in our lives. They shape our values, beliefs, and character inprofound ways. However, whether they are the best teachers depends on various factors, including their knowledge, expertise, and ability to provide a balanced education. Ultimately, a combination of parental guidance and professional teaching is essential for a well-rounded and comprehensive education.。

Reading Comprehension (20%)Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:The current vogue, in the West, of Yoga and Zen(禅宗)may prove to have been no more than a transitory Western fashion. It may be doubted whether the average modern Westerner genuinely understands and practices either Zen or Yoga. However, it is also possible that these are sincere attempts to re-activate, among Westerners, the normal human faculty of spiritual contemplation. In the Middle Ages, Westerners, like other people, did practice contemplation. This is a necessary condition for spiritual health, and modern Westerners are suffering spiritually for having abandoned the practice of contemplation deliberately. Moreover, the East has other lessons for the West which the West certainly ought to learn and to take to heart. For instance, the West could perhaps learn from the East how to re-capture Man's original harmony with the rest of Nature. Man is an integral part of Nature. When he alienates himself from her and tries to dominate her as if he were outside Nature and were not rooted in Nature, Man runs into trouble. The degree of modern Western Man's alienation from Nature can be measured by the potency of modern technology, for technology is an instrument for dominating Nature. The technologically advanced countries are already paying the price of theirsuper-technology. Two items in this price are pollution and inflation.Shinto stands for a harmonious cooperation between Man and the rest of Nature. It recognizes that Nature is holy; that she has sacred rights; that Man has a religious obligation to respect these rights; and that, if he violates them, he will bring retribution on himself. The Japanese people have already begun to bring retribution on themselves by polluting Nature.Taoism (道教) sets its face against imposing Man's will on Nature by means of technology. This Chinese philosophy took shape at some dale between the sixth and the fourth century B. C., when technology was still rudimentary, if judged by present-day standards. Yet already the Taoist philosophers were taking alarm; they were calling for a return to a simpler way of life. It is now evident that they were far-sighted. The Taoist philosophy is what the world now needs. It is needed today by West and East alike, now that the potent modern technology, which was invented in the West two hundred years ago, is being adopted all round the globe.61. Yoga or Zen ___________.A.is only a transitory Western fashionB.is not genuinely understood by the average modern westernersC.is in fashion now in the WestD.is a popular sport .62. This passage implies that ____________.A.it is wrong to abandon spiritual contemplationB.the Westerners practice contemplation in the Middle EastC.the Westerners abandon the practice of contemplation deliberatelyD.the East has other lessons for the West63. What is the main topic of this passage?A.Why are Yoga and Zan popular in the West?B.What does the West have to learn from the East?C.How to recapture Man’s original harmony with the rest of Nature?D.How to practice spiritual contemplation?64. The author of this passage _________________.A.disagrees with Taoist’s philosophyB.prefers Shinto to TaoismC.seems to be against modern technologyD.prefers super-technology to spiritual contemplation65. According to the passage ______________.A.it is very expensive to buy super-technologyB.it costs a lot to deal with the problems of pollution and inflationC.the technologically advanced countries are richer than other countriesD.both pollution and inflation are caused by modern technologyQuestions 66-70 are based on the following passage. There is one kind of pain for which nobody has yet found a cure--the pain that comes from the ending of a relationship. The relationship could be a marriage or a deep friendship. Such a relationship may come to a sudden end; or it may simply fade away slowly as people and circumstances change. You may be the one to "break it off ", with a short note or a brief phone call. Or you may be on the receiving end. However it ended and whoever decided to end it, the pain is equally hard to hear and it requires the same time for grief. Although there is no cure for grief, we can not help looking for one, to ease the pain and to make us forget our tears. We keep ourselves busy with work, or we try to plunge ourselves in our hobbies. Perhaps we start to drink more than we should to drown our sorrows, or we follow the conventional advice and join a club or society. But these things cannot cure it. Moreover, we are always in a hurry to get rid of our grief. We feel that we should try to convince ourselves, as we bite on the pillow, that we are much too old to be crying. Some people bury their grief deep inside themselves. Others seek relief by pouring their hearts out to their friends, or to anyone else who can offer a sympathetic shoulder to cry on. It is not easy to explain why we adopt this attitude to emotional pain, when we would never expect anyone to overcome physical pain simply by an effort of will power. Part of the answer must lie in the nature of grief itself. The important thing to admit about grief, then, is that it will take its time. By trying to convince ourselves that it ought to be over sooner, we create an additional tension which can only make things worse. How much time is needed will vary from person to person, butpsychiatrists have a rule of thumb: grief will last as long as the original relationship lasted. The sad thing is that, when the breakdown occurs, we can only stumble forward over the stones beneath our feet. It is dark ahead, and we will fall painfully many times before we begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.66. It is the author’s belief that _______________.A.there is no way to kill the pain from the ending of a relationshipB.those who break up the relationship do not suffer from the pain from the endingof a relationshipC.people suffer from the pain only when the relationship comes to a sudden endD.Both A and B.67. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined term drown our sorrow?A.To get rid of grief by drinking too much alcohol.B.To feel sorry for drinking too muchC.To end our life by drinking an excessive amount of alcoholD.To be overwhelmed by grief68. Psychiatrists believe that _____________.A.grief lasts longer if your friends break off the relationshipB.grief lasts in proportion to the duration of your friendshipC.grief lasts longer if you value your friendship a lotD.grief ends as soon as you set up a new friendship with someone else69. The passage tells us that __________.A.we cannot relieve our emotional pain no matter how hard we tryB.it takes time and efforts to relieve our emotional painC.we do not have to suffer from any emotional pain if we try our best to reduce itD.there is little point in making our efforts to relieve our emotional pain70. This does not mean attractiveness in the ordinary sense, for that is a quality 71 our control. The leader has, nevertheless, to be a magnet; a 72 figure towards whom people are 73 .Magnetism in that sense depends, first of all, on being 74 . There is a type of Authority which can be 75 from behind closed doors, but that is not a leadership. 76 there is movement and action, the true leader is in the forefront and may seem, indeed, to be everywhere at once. He has to become a legend; the 77 for anecdotes, whether true or false; a character. One of the simplest devices is to be 78 on the occasion when the leader might be 79 to be there, enough in itself to start a rumor about the vital 80 which has detained him. To make up for this, he can 81 when least expected, giving rise to another story about the interest he can display 82 things which other folks might 83 as trivial. With this gift for 84 curiosity the leader always combines a reluctance to 85 about himself. Choose the one that you think is the correct answer.1A report consistently brought back by visitors to the US is how friendly, courteous, and helpful most Americans were to them. To be fair, this observation is also frequently made of Canada and Canadians, and should best be considered North American. There are, of course, exceptions. Small-minded officials, rude waiters, and ill-mannered taxi drivers are hardly unknown in the US. Yet it is an observation made so frequently that it deserves comment. For a long period of time and in many parts of the country, a traveler was a welcome break in an otherwise dull existence. Dullness and loneliness were common problems of the families who generally lived distant from one another. Strangers and travelers were welcome sources of diversion, and brought news of the outside world. The harsh realities of the frontier also shaped this tradition of hospitality. Someone traveling alone, if hungry, injured, or ill, often had nowhere to turn except to the nearest cabin or settlement. It was not a matter of choice for the traveler or merely a charitable impulse on the part of the settlers. It reflected the harshness of daily life: if you didn't take in the stranger and take care of him, there was no one else who would. And someday, remember, you might be in the same situation.Today there are many charitable organizations that specialized in helping the weary traveler. Yet, the old tradition of hospitality to strangers is still very strong in the US, especially in the smaller cities and towns away from the busy tourist trails. I was just traveling through, got talking with this American, and pretty soon he invited me home for dinner-amazing. Such observations reported by visitors to the US are not uncommon, but are not always understood properly. The casual friendliness of many Americans should be interpreted neither as superficial nor as artificial, but as the result of a historically developed cultural tradition. As is true of any developed society, in America a complex set of cultural signals, assumptions, and conventions underlies all social interrelationships. And, of course, speaking a language does not necessarily mean that someone understands social and cultural patterns. Visitors who fail to translate cultural meanings properly often draw wrong conclusions. For example, when an American uses the word friend, the cultural implications of the word may be quite different from those it has in the visitor's language and culture. It takes more than a brief encounter on a bus to distinguish between courteous convention and individual interest. Yet, being friendly is a virtue that many Americans value highly and expect from both neighbors and strangers.1. The word observation in the first paragraph most probably means[A] attention. [B] watchfulness. [C] survey. [D] opinion.2. People in frontier settlements used to entertain travelers because these strangers would______.[A] bring good news from outside world.[B] help locals solve their problems.[C] bring a change to the life in the settlements.[D] requires a different definition.3. Nowadays the tradition of friendliness to strangers______.[A] is still prevailing.[B] can rarely be seen[C] is wading fast[D] requires a different definition4. According to the passage, which of the following is true?[A] People are still fond of traveling to remote places.[B] Foreign travelers now keep away from busy tourist trails.[C] There is no charitable organization in small cities.[D] Foreign visitors to the US have trouble understanding American's friendliness.5. From the last paragraph of the passage we have learned that______[A] the ability of speaking a foreign language implies a better understanding of its culture.[B] various virtues manifest themselves exclusively among friends.[C] culture exercises a great influence on social interrelationships.[D] courteous convention and individual interest are closely interrelated.2It is well known that when an individual joins a group he tends to accept the group's standards of behavior and thinking. He is expected to behave in accordance with these norms-in other words the group expects him to conform. Many illustrations could be given of this from everyday life, but what is of particular interest to psychologists is the extent to which people's judgments and opinions can be changed as a result of group pressure. In a typical experiment, the experimenter asks for volunteers to join a group that is investigating visual perception. The victims are not, therefore, aware of the real purpose of the experiment. Each volunteer is taken to a room where he finds a group of about seven people who are collaborating with the experimenter. The group is shown a standard card which contains a single line. They are then asked to look at a second card. This has three lines on it. One is obviously longer than the line on the first card, one is shorter and one the same length. They have to say which line on the second card is the same length as the line on the standard card. The other members of the group answer first but what the volunteer does not know is that they have been told to pick one of the wrong lines. The volunteer sees that the other members of the group unanimously choose a line which is obviously not the same length as the one on the standard card. When it is his turn to answer he is faced with the unanimous opinion of the group-all the others have chosen line A but he quite clearly sees line B as correct. What will he do? According to Asch, more than half of the victims chosen will change their opinion. What is equally surprising is that, when interviewed about their answers, most explained that they knew the group choice was incorrect but that they yielded to the pressure of the group because they thought they must be suffering from an optical illusion.6. His one concern, that gave to his ramblings in Concord fields a value of high adventure, was to explore the true meaning of wealth. As he understood the problem of economics, there three possible solutions open to him: to exploit himself, to exploit his fellows, or to reduce the problem to its lowest denominator. The first was quite impossible-to imprison oneself in a treadmill when the morning called to great adventure. To exploit one's fellows seemed to Thoreau's sensitive social conscience an even greater infidelity. Freedom with abstinence seemed to him better than serfdom with material well-being, and he was content to move to Walden Pond and to set about the high business of living, to confront only the essential facts of life and to see what it had to teach. He did not advocate that other men should build cabins and live isolated. He had no wish to dogmatize concerning the best mode of living-each must settle that for himself. But that a satisfying life should be lived, he was vitally concerned. The story of his emancipation from the lower economics is the one romance of his life, and Walden is his great book. It is a book in praise of life rather than of Nature, a record of calculating economics that studied saving in order to spend more largely. But it is a book of social criticism as well, in spite of its explicit denial of such a purpose. In considering the true nature of economy he concluded, with Ruskin, that the cost of a thing is the amount of life that is required in exchange for it, immediately or in the long run .In Walden Thoreau elaborated the text: The only wealth is life.11.Thoreau started an experiment at Walden Pond with the hope of ______.[A] learning how to live quietly.[B] writing a book on philosophy.[C] discovering what humans can learn from nature.[D] working out the best adjustment to material life .12. To Thoreau the best solution to the problem of economics is _______.[A] to live a very simple life.[B] to become self-sufficient.[C] to live in the country.[D] to reform the society.13. Thoreau holds that the crucial thing for people to do is to ________.[A] have a better understanding of what life means.[B] live harmoniously with nature.[C] to save as much as one possibly can.[D] to live a life that one is content with.14. In the book Walden all of the following can be found except________.[A] the nature of economy.[B] the meaning of freedom.[C] the criticism of society.[D] Ruskin's philosophy.15. Thoreau's attitude toward society can best be characterized as one of _______.[A] acceptance. [B] avoidance. [C] indifference. [D] individualism.4Automation refers to the introduction of electronic control and automatic operation of productive machinery. It reduces the human factors, mental and physical, in production, and is designed to make possible the manufacture of more goods with fewer workers. The development of automation in American industry has been called the Second Industrial Revolution.Labor's concern over automation arises from uncertainty about its effects on employment, and fears of major changes in jobs. In the main, labor has taken the view that resistance to technological change is futile. In the long run, the result of automation may well be an increase in employment, since it is expected that vast industries will grow up around manufacturing, maintaining, and repairing automation equipment. Unquestionably, however, there will be major shifts in jobs within plants and displacement of labor from one industry to another. The interest of labor lies in bringing about this transition with a minimum of inconvenience and distress to the workers involved. Also, union spokesmen emphasize that the benefit of the increased production and lower costs made possible by automation should be shared by workers in the form of higher wages, more leisure, and improved living standards. To protect the interests of their members in the era of automation, unions have adopted a number of new policies. One of these is the promotion of supplementary unemployment benefits plans. It is emphasized that since the employer involved in SUB plan has a direct financial stake in preventing unemployment, he will have a strong incentive for planning new installations so as to cause the least possible disruption in jobs and job assignments. Some unions are working for dismissal pay agreements, requiring that permanently laid off workers be paid a sum of money based on length of service. Another approach is the idea of the improvement factor, which calls for wage increase based on increases in productivity. It is probable, however, that labor will relymainly on reduction in working hours in order to gain a full share in the fruits of automation.16. We learn from paragraph 1 that automation will probably lead to_______.[A] industrial expansion[B] an increase in employment[C] displacement of labor from one industry to another.[D] an increase in unemployment.17. Labor has the opinion that _______.[A] all efforts must be made to prevent automation[B] automation will cause a rise in consumer costs[C] its main interest lies in increasing all wages.[D] technological change cannot be stopped.18. What is the relation between automation and employment in the opinion of labor?[A] Automation will definitely leads to more unemployment.[B] From a long-term point of view automation will bring about more jobs.[C] Automation will not cause much change in employment[D] sooner of later automation will do all the work instead of man19. The union stresses that ________.[A] workers should also enjoy the fruits brought about by automation.[B] no workers should be fired in the development of automation.[C] it is necessary to slow down the development of automation.[D] workers should be paid according to their length of service20. How many new policies of the unions have been listed in this passage?[A] 1 [B] 2 [C] 3 [D] 5VI Writing (20%)Directions: People may hold different views as to the dispute over when the shaping of a person's character, or natural disposition is completed. 英语2007年大作文

英语2007年大作文Title: The Impact of Globalization on Cultural Diversity。
Globalization, a phenomenon that has swept across the world in recent decades, has sparked heated debates regarding its effects on cultural diversity. While some argue that globalization leads to the homogenization of cultures, others contend that it fosters cultural exchange and enrichment. In this essay, I will examine the impact of globalization on cultural diversity, exploring both its positive and negative implications. To begin with, globalization has undoubtedlyfacilitated the spread of ideas, values, and practices across borders. The emergence of global communication networks, such as the internet and social media, has enabled individuals from different cultural backgrounds to connect and interact like never before. As a result, people have greater access to diverse cultural products, includingliterature, music, films, and cuisine. This cross-cultural exchange can foster mutual understanding and appreciation, leading to a more interconnected and tolerant global society. Moreover, globalization has promoted cultural hybridization, whereby elements from different cultures merge to create new forms of expression. This can be observed in various fields, such as fashion, art, and architecture, where diverse influences blend together to produce innovative and eclectic styles. Cultural hybridization encourages creativity and innovation, enriching the cultural landscape with fresh perspectives and ideas. However, it is important to acknowledge that globalization also poses challenges to cultural diversity. One of the primary concerns is the dominance of Western culture in the global arena. The spread of Western values and consumerism through media conglomerates and multinational corporations has led to the marginalization of indigenous cultures and languages. This phenomenon, often referred to as cultural imperialism, threatens the survival of traditional customs and knowledge systems.Furthermore, globalization has contributed to the commodification of culture, turning cultural artifacts and traditions into marketable products. As cultures become commodified for mass consumption, they risk losing their authenticity and significance. This trend is particularly evident in the tourism industry, where cultural heritage sites are often exploited for profit, leading to their degradation and commercialization. In addition, globalization has been associated with the erosion of local identities and communities. The influx of foreign goods, technologies, and ideologies can disrupt traditional ways of life and undermine local industries. This has fueled concerns about cultural homogenization, as distinct cultural practices and identities are overshadowed by globalized norms and standards.Despite these challenges, there are efforts underway to safeguard and promote cultural diversity in the face ofglobalization. Governments, cultural organizations, and grassroots movements are working to preserve indigenous languages, traditions, and knowledge systems. Additionally, initiatives such as UNESCO's Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions aimto support cultural diversity through policies and programs. In conclusion, globalization has had a profound impact on cultural diversity, reshaping the way cultures interact and evolve in the modern world. While it has facilitated cross-cultural exchange and hybridization, globalizationalso poses challenges to the preservation of localidentities and traditions. It is essential to strike a balance between embracing the benefits of globalization and protecting the rich tapestry of human cultures that makeour world truly diverse and vibrant.。
2007英语考研作文

2007英语考研作文In the 21st century, technology has become an integral part of our lives, and its influence on education is profound and multifaceted. The advent of the internet, smartphones, and various educational software has transformed the way we learn and teach.Firstly, technology has made education more accessible. With online courses and virtual classrooms, students from all over the world can access quality education without the need to be physically present in a classroom. This has been particularly beneficial for those living in remote areas or with limited resources.Secondly, the use of technology in education has enhanced the learning experience. Interactive whiteboards, educational apps, and multimedia presentations have made learning more engaging and interactive. Students can now visualize complex concepts and participate in virtual experiments, which were not possible before.Thirdly, technology has facilitated personalized learning. With the help of AI and data analytics, educators can track the progress of each student and tailor their teaching methods to meet individual needs. This has led to a more effective and efficient learning process. However, there are also challenges associated with theintegration of technology in education. One of the main concerns is the digital divide, where students from less privileged backgrounds may not have access to the necessary technology. Additionally, there is a risk of over-reliance on technology, which could lead to a decrease in critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In conclusion, while technology has brought about significant changes in the field of education, it is essential to strike a balance between traditional teaching methods and the use of technology. Educators must ensure that technology is used as a tool to enhance learning, rather than replacing the human element in education.。

2007年英语一作文真题

2007年英语一作文真题2007年的作文题目是:“Write an essay of 160-200 words based on the following topic: The Impact of Technology on Education. In your essay, you should discuss both the positive and negative aspects of technology in education, providing relevant examples to support your opinion。
”范文:"The Impact of Technology on Education"In recent years, technology has revolutionized various aspects of our lives, including education. The influence of technology on education is a topic of ongoing debate, with both positive and negative aspects being highlighted. On one hand, technology has greatly facilitated learning. Online courses and digital textbooks allow students to access educational materials anytime and anywhere, breaking the barriers of traditional classroom settings. Multimedia tools, such as interactive whiteboards and educational software, enhance classroom engagement and cater to different learning styles. For instance, students can now visualize complex concepts through simulations and videos, making learning more interactive and memorable. On the other hand, the reliance on technology in education has its drawbacks. Excessive use of digital devices may lead to a decline in face-to-face communication skills, which are essential in both personal and professional life. Moreover, theunequal access to technology can widen the educational gap. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds may not have the same opportunities for online learning and digital resources, putting them at a disadvantage compared to their peers. In conclusion, technology has a profound impact on education, offering numerous benefits but also posing challenges. It is crucial for educators and policymakers to find a balance, ensuring that technology is used as a tool to enhance learning rather than replace essential skills and human interaction. Providing equal access to technology and incorporating digital literacy into the curriculum can help mitigate some of the negative impacts while maximizing the potential of technology in education. To effectively harness the benefits of technology in education, it is essential to develop a well-rounded approach. This includes:1. Integrating Technology Thoughtfully: Technology should be used as a complement to traditional teaching methods, not as a replacement. Teachers should carefully select digital tools that enhance learning outcomes and engage students in meaningful ways.2. Fostering Digital Literacy: Students need to be taught how to use technology responsibly and critically. This includes understanding digital citizenship, online safety, and the ability to evaluate the credibility of online information.3. Addressing the Accessibility Gap: Efforts should be made to ensure that all students have equal access to technology. This may involve providing resources to underprivileged schools or creating programs that loan devices to students who cannot afford them.4. Encouraging Collaborative Learning: Technology can facilitate collaborative projects and peer learning. Platforms that allow for shared documents, virtual classrooms, and collaborative tools can help students work together, regardless of their physical location.5. Continuous Professional Development: Teachers should be provided with ongoing training to keep up with the latest educational technologies and methodologies. This will enable them to effectively integrate these tools into theirteaching. In summary, the impact of technology on education is multifaceted. While it offers unprecedented opportunities for learning and teaching, it also presents challenges that need to be addressed. By adopting a balanced approach and being mindful of the potential pitfalls, we can leverage technology to create a more inclusive, engaging, and effective educational system.。

Fifty is supposed to be my father’s age, but now I am stuck with this number and everything it means.A few days ago, a friend tried to cheer me up by saying, “Fifty is what forty used to be.”He had made an inspirational point. Am I over the hill? People keep telling me that the hill has been moved, and I keep telling them that he high-jump bar has dropped from the six feet I once easily cleared to the four feet that is impossible for me now.“You’re not getting older, you are getting better.”says Dr. Joyce Brothers. This, however, is the kind of doctor who inspires a second opinion. And so, as I approach the day when I cannot even jump over the tennis net. I am moved to share some thoughts on aging with you. I am moved to show how aging feels to me physically and mentally. Getting older, of course, is obviously a better change than the one that brings you eulogies(悼词).In fact ,a poet named Robert Browning considered it the best change of all : Grow old along with me!The best is yet to me.Whether or not Browning was right, most of my first fifty years have been golden ones, so I will settle for what is ahead being as good as what has gone by. I find myself moving toward what is ahead with a curious blend (混合)of both fighting and accepting my aging, hoping that the philosopher(哲学家)was right when he said .”Old is always fifteen years from now.”experience meditated for 20 minutes a day over the same perioD.Both groups were then given the tests with two numbers in a group of letters. As both group looked for the numbers, their brain activity was recorded.Everyone could catch the first number. But the brain recordings showed that the less experienced mediators tended to grasp the first number and hang onto it, so they missed the second number. Those with more experience gave less attention to the first number .as if letting it go ,which led to an increased ability to grasp the second number ,This shows that attention can change with practice.Just ask Daniel Levison, who meditated for three months as part of the study.”I am a much better listener,”he saiD.“I do not get lost in my own personal reaction to what people are saying.”48.The underlined word “them”in Paragraph 1 refers toA.feelingsB.minds C.peopleD.thoughts49.Meditations manage their daily tasks better because theyA.are given less pressureB.allocate their attention betterC.have more stimuli for lifeD.practice them more frequently50.In the experiment, volunteers doing meditation for longer hoursA.were more likely to catch both of the membersB.were used to memorizing numbers in groupsC.usually ignored the first number observedD.paid more attention to numbers than to letters51.The study proves thatA.meditation improves one’s healthB.brain activity can be recordedC.human attention can be trainedD.mediators have a good sense of hearingEWhen we think of leadership, we often think of strength and power .But what are these really ,and how do they operate?Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible .it is short-term, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something against their will, theymay do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel will do more harm in the long-term. They will also experience fear.Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best .If they associate you with this emotion of fear. They will become less functional around you, and you will have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a very good employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadership. The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something ,which may be part of the work day; or we can employ them at the emotional level, so they became fully devoted to the projects and provide some of their own motivation(积极性)。

2007年天津大学博士英语考试最新作文真题与范文
Write an essay of about 180 words to describe a person who has the greatest influence on your life or s tudies. Give one two examples to state the influence.
范文
It would be extremely distressing for me to divulge that there is ultimately one person who has had the greatest impact on my life because there have been several who have helped to make me the person I a m today. One thing all these people have had in common, however, is how they demonstrated their since re love to me in one way or another. That has helped shape my faith and my understanding of what lif e really is to me.
By piecemeal, in my eyes arises a figure, bigger and bigger, clearer and clearer. She, in a simple an d magic way, taught me about grace, strength, and dignity when I was a little bairn. She, in the season for gathering corps, was diagnosed with liver cancer shortly before my last year of college. She, with a faint smile on her face, passed away just at the eve of my wedding. Never once did I hear her complai n about the cards she'd been dealt, never once did she show that she felt sorry for herself, and never on ce did she lose faith. She as an ordinary pipsqueak showed more strength and grace than anyone I've ev er known.
How I would have loved to have had more time with her but she left me, with some of life's greatest l essons: love deeply and passionately, give more than you take, and always believe that you are very spe cial---not because you are better but because you are the best. This smallshot is my great, glorious, and genuine matriarch. (255words)。
