Stress may be defined as the response of the body to any demand. Whenever people experience something pleasant or unpleasant, we say they are under stress. We call the pleasant kind “eustress”, the unpleasant kind “distress”.People sometimes compare our lives with that of the caveman who didn’t have to worry about the stock market or the atomic bomb. They forget that the caveman worried about being eaten by a bear or about dying of hunger—things that few people worry about today. It’s not that people suffer more stress today; it’s just that they think they do.It is inconceivable that anyone should have no stress at all. Most people who are ambitious and want to accomplish something live on stress. They need it. But excessive stress is by all means harmful. Worse, chronic exposure to stress over a long time may cause more serious diseases and may actually shorten your life. The most frequent causes of distress in man are psychological—lack of adaptability, not having a code of behavior. So the secret of coping with stress is not to avoid it, but to do what you like to do and what you are made to do, at your own rate. For most people, it is really a matter of learning how to behave in various situations. The most important thing is to have a code of life, to know how to live.1.The modern man is suffering .A.more stress than the cavemanB.less stress than cavemanC.different stress from the cavemanD.same stress as the caveman2.Which of the following is NOT an example that causes distress?cking in adaptability and code of life.B.Killing a bear in hunting.C.The failure to pass final examinations.D.Having an economic problem.3.According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?A.Everyone will suffer certain kinds of stress in his life.B.Chronic exposure to stress may shorten your life.C.Excessive stress is especially harmful to health.D.Most people can learn to avoid stress.4.According to the passage, one should .A.try to avoid as much stress as possibleB.cope with stress in different waysC.learn to do things at his own rateD.have the response of the body to any demand参考答案1.[考点]推理判断题【精析】C根据第二段可知,人们将自己的生活与穴居人相比较,认为穴居人不用担心股票市场和原子弹。

2020年全国英语等级三级试题及答案(卷六)

2020年全国英语等级三级试题及答案(卷六)Everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older, but men’s minds decline more than women’s, according to the results of a worldwide survey. Certain differences seem to be inherent in male and female brains: Men are better at maintaining and dealing with mental images (useful in mathematical reasoning and spatial skills), while women tend to excel at recalling information from their brain’s files (helpful with language skills and remembering the locations of objects). Many studies have looked for a connection between sex and the amount of mental decline people experience as they age, but the results have been mixed. Some studies found more age-related decline in men than in women, while others saw the opposite or even no relationship at all between sex and mental decline. Those results could be improper because the studies involved older people, and women live longer than men. The men tested are the survivors, “so they’re the ones that may not have shown such cognitive decline,”said study team leader Elizabeth of the University of Warwick in England.People surveyed completed four tasks that tested sex-related cognitive skills: matching an object to its rotated form, matching lines shown from the same angle, typing as many words in a particular category as possible in the given time, e.g. “objects usually coloredgray”, and recalling the location of objects in a line drawing. The first two were tasks at which men usually excel; the latter are typically dominated by women.Within each age group studied, men and women performed better in their separate categories on average. And though performance declined with age for both genders, women showed obviously less decline than men overall.1.The underlined word in the first paragraph means .A. naturalB. greatC. obviousD. absolute2.According to the passage, which of the following can NOT be typed into the same category?A. Cloud.B. Sheep.C. Trees.D. Goose.3.Which of the following statements is true according the article?A. Men do better than women when it comes to learning English.B. Women stand out at remembering people’s names.C. Men excel at typing as many words in a particular category aspossible in the given time.D. Women excel at dealing with mathematical problems.4.One important factor that affects the correctness of the results is that .A. the old men tested may not have shown such cognitive declineB. people surveyed are all oldC. people taking part in this test came from all over the worldD. women live longer than men5.The author aims to tell us that .A. women’s minds perform better than men’sB. men’s minds decline more with ageC. everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get olderD. a survey on humans’mind decline was done recently参考答案1.[考点]词语理解题【精析】A 根据第一段第二句中的“in male and female brains”可推知,男女大脑的思维在某些方面的差异是天生的。

Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET by drawing a thick line across the corresponding letter in the brackets.Text IFifteen years ago, I entered the Boston Globe, which was a temple to me then. It wasn’t easy getting hired. But once you were there, I found, you were in.Globe jobs were for life-guaranteed until retirement. For 15 years I had prospered there — moving from an ordinary reporter to foreign correspondent and finally to senior editor. I would have a lifetime of security is I struck with it. Instead, I had made a decision to leave. I entered my boss’s office. Would he rage? I wondered. He had a famous temper. “Matt, we have to have a talk,” I began awkwardly. “I came to the Globe when I was twenty-four. Now I’m forty. There’s a lot I want to do in life. I’m resigning.” “To another paper?” he asked. I reached into my coat pocket, but didn’t say anything. I handed him a letter that explained everything. It said that I was leaving to start a new media company. We were at a rare turning point in history. I wanted to be directly engaged in the change. “I’m glad for you,”he said, quite out of my expectation. “I just came from a board of directors meeting and it was seventy-five percent discouraging news. Some of that we can deal with. But much of it we can’t, ” he went on. “I wish you all the luck in the world,” he concluded. “And if it doesn’t work out, remember, your star is always high here.”Then I went out of his office, walking through the newsroom for more good-byes. Everybody was saying congratulations. Everybody —even though I’d be risking all on an unfamiliar venture: all the financial security I had carefully built up.Later, I had a final talk with Bill Taylor, chairman and publisher of the Boston Globe. He had turned the Globe into a billion-dollar property. “I’m resigning, Bill, ”I said. He listened while I gave him the story. He wasn’t looking angry or dismayed either. Aftera pause, he said, “Golly, I wish I were in your shoes.”46. From the passage we know that the Globe is a famous _______.[A] newspaper [B] magazine[C]temple [ D ] church47. If the writer stayed with the Globe _________.[ A] he would be able to realize his lifetime dreams.[ B] he would let his long-cherished dreams fade away.[ C ] he would never have to worry about his future life.[ D] he would never be allowed to develop his ambitions.48. The writer wanted to resign because _________.[A] he had serious trouble with his boss.[ B ] he got underpaid at his job for the Globe.[ C ] he wanted to be engaged in the new media industry.[ D ] he had found a better paid job in a publishing house.49. When the writer decided to resign the Globe was facedwith _______.[ A ] a trouble with its staff members[ B ] a shortage of qualified reporters[ C ] an unfavorable business situation[ D ]an uncontrollable business situation50. By “:I wish I were in your shoes.” (in the last paragraph) Bill Taylor meant that _______.[ A ] the writer was to fail.[ B] the writer was stupid[ C ] he would do the same if possible[D] he would reject the writer’s requestText 2Do you find it very difficult and painful to get up in the morning? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when your labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: “Get up, Peter! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that Peter is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit if better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes.Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.51. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ________.[A] he is a lazy person.[ B ] he refuses to follow his own energy cycle.[C] he is not sure when his energy is low.[D] he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening.52. Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?[AJ Unawareness of energy cycles.[B] Familiar monologues.[C]A change in a family member’s energy cycle.[D] Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.53. If one wants to work efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should __________.[A]change his energy cycle[B] overcome his laziness[C]get up earlier than usual[D] go to bed earlier54. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will __________.[A] help to keep your energy for the day’s work.[B] help you to control your temper early in the day[C] enable you to concentrate on your routine work[D] keep your energy your energy cycle under control all day55. Which of the following statements is NOT true?[A] Getting off to work with a minimum effort helps save one’s energy.[B] Dr. Kletman explains why people reach their peaks at different hours of day.[C] Habit helps a person adapt to his own energy cycle.[D] Children have energy cycles, too.Text 3There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil f uels (coal and oil) is creating a “greenhouse effect”— conserving heat reflected from the earth and raising the world's average temperature. If this view is correct and the world's temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of thepolar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth's temperature — a result that would be equally disastrous.A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would mane agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report drafted by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible) Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world's temperature will stay about the same as it is now. Driven by economic profits, people neglect the damage on our environment caused by the “advanced civilization”. Maybe the air pollution is the price the human beings have to pay for their development. But is it really worthwhile?56. As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution _______.[ A ] cause widespread damage in the countryside[ B ] affected the entire eastern half of the United States[ C ] had damaged effect on health[ D ] existed merely in urban and industries areas57. As to the greenhouse effect, the author __________.[ A ] share the same view with the scientist.[ B ] is uncertain of its occurrence[ C ] rejects it as being ungrounded[ D ] thinks that it will destroy the world soon58. The word “offset” in the second paragraph could be replaced by _________.[ A] slip into [ B ] make up for[ C ] set up [ D ] catch up with59. It can be concluded that ____________.[ A ] raising the world's temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earth.[ B] lowering the world's temperature merely a few degrees would lead major farming areas to disaster.[C] almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decade.[D] the world's temperature will remain constant in the years to come.60. This passage is primarily about __________.[A]the greenhouse effect……[ B ] the burning of fossil fuels……[C] the potential effect of air pollution.[ D] the likelihood of a new ice age.下载文档润稿写作咨询。

When Katherine Chon was in fifth grade, she drew a u dream tree" representing the path she hoped her life would take. One branch led to Harvard Medical School, which is exactly what her mother had hoped for when the Chons moved to the U. S. from Korea to give their three children opportunities.Always a diligent student, Katherine started to learn medicine at Brown. But then she added a new limb to her dream tree—one that her mother still doesn' t understand. Shocked by the misfortune of some Korean women, Katherine joined forces with another Brown student to form the Polaris Project, now one of the largestanti-human-traffic-king organizations in the country. "It was really hard for my parents," says Katherine. "They had so many life stresses so their children could get a great education and have a comfortable life. ”The dreams of parents and children often differ, but the conflict can be especially painful in first-generation immigrant families where the parents have made enormous sacrifices. Lisa Park 5 an assistant professor at the University of California, San Diego, says that the focus of every family that moves to the United States to provide opportunities for their children is almost always on the future, with little mention of the circumstances that compelled them to move. And even though the parents are the ones working 12-hour days ? the children are also under intense pressure to perform in ways that will justify the parents' sacrifice. The contrast between parents' dreams and children' s realities can be particularly sharp for daughters who have grown up with almost infinite opportunities. Their mothers often came from places where opportunities for women were limited, which makes the daughters' choices even harder to understand. Mary Lugemwa' s parents encouraged her to study math or science at Harvard. She complied at first, majoring in computer science. But she is currently working as a film producer for a nonprofit organization called Meaningful Media. " I sometimes feel guilty," she says, " having chosen to be an artist, because I know that if I had chosen a scientific background, I could help my parents a lot more. ”1. 公共英语三级阅读理解专项强化真题试卷6(题后含答案及解析)

公共英语三级阅读理解专项强化真题试卷6(题后含答案及解析) 题型有:1.One important thing during the pre-Christmas rush at our house was the arrival of my daughter’s kindergarten report card. She got high praise for her reading, vocabulary and overall enthusiasm. On the other hand, we learnt that she has work to do on her numbers and facility with the computer, though the detailed handwritten report her teachers prepared is absent of any words that might be interpreted as negative in describing her efforts. A number system indicates how she’ s measuring up in each area without any mention of passing or failing. All of which seems to make my daughter’ s school neither fish nor fowl when it comes to the debate over the merits of giving formal grades to kids. At one level, the advantages and disadvantages are obvious. A grade system provides a straightforward standard by which to measure how your child is progressing at school—and how he or she is getting on compared to other children. But as writer Sue Ferguson notes, “Grades can deceive. “The aim should be “to measure learning , not simply what a student can recall on a test. “ The two aren’t the same—and if you doubt that as an adult, ask yourself whether you could sit down without any preparation and still pass those high-school-level examinations. If you’ re old enough, you’ ve lived through this debate before. At one time, it was considered unfair to put children in direct competition with one another if it could be avoided. The intention behind that may have been good, but it ignored the fact that competition, and the will to come out on top, are essential components of the human condition. This time around, educators working with a no-grades approach are emphasizing different reasons. 国家公共英语三级(假日)练习试卷6(题后含答案及解析)

国家公共英语三级(假日)练习试卷6(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1.First, any habit which slows down your silent reading to the speed at which you speak, or read aloud is inefficient. If you point out each word as you read, or move your head, or form the words with your lips, you read poorly. Less obvious habits also hold back reading efficiency. One is “saying”each word silently by moving your tongue or throat or vocal cords; another is “hearing” each word as you read. These are habits which should have been outgrown long ago. The beginning reader is learning low letters can make words, how written words are pronounced, and how sentences are put together. Your reading purpose is quite different; it is to understand meaning. It has been estimated that up to 75% of the words in English arc not really necessary for conveying the meaning. The secret of silent reading is to seek out those key words and phrases which carry the thought and so pay less attention to words which exist only for the sake of grammatical completeness. An efficient reader can grasp the meaning from a page at least twice as fast as he can read the page aloud. Unconsciously perhaps, he takes in a whole phrase or thought unit at time. If he “says”or “hears”words to himself, they are selected ones, said for emphasis.A. how to be an efficient readerB. when they want to emphasize themC. slow your reading speedD. understanding meaningE. seek out key words or phrasesF. how to read fastG. to form words of your own1.This passage is mainly about ______.正确答案:A 涉及知识点:假日2.According to paragraph , saying each word to yourself as you read will ______.正确答案:C 涉及知识点:假日3.Saying or hearing as you read are habits for ______.正确答案:D 涉及知识点:假日4.In paragraph , the writer advises us to ______.正确答案:E 涉及知识点:假日5.When do efficient readers “say” words? ______.正确答案:B 涉及知识点:假日Section IV Writing (40 minutes)Directions: You should write your responses to both Part A and Part B of this section on ANSWER SHEET 2.Part A6.Write a short composition with the first sentence of each paragraph given.A Hundred Years from Now Some people are pessimistic (悲观的) when they think about the future. ____________ Other people believe that man adapts very easily. ____________ If we are to have a bright future, we have to take measures now. ____________正确答案:Some people are pessimistic when they think about the future. They fear that the overgrowth of population will bring about terrible consequences. To begin with, the earth will become too crowded. Second, the natural resources will be used up at an ever-increasing rate. And finally, the problem of pollution will grow worse and worse. In a word, for these people a crisis will occur sooner or later on our earth. Other people believe that man adapt very easily. Our ancestors fought against numerous difficulties and established a civilization as we have today. The present generation will certainly be able to conquer any obstacles on our future road and build up an even better world. It is true that we are faced with many problems. But with the development of science and technology, nearly all of them can be solved through one way or another. Therefore, there is no need to worry about our future. If we are to have a bright future, we have to take measures now. For example, citizens should be educated to conserve natural resources. Furthermore, effective ways will have to be found to reduce pollution. But most important of all, the rapid growth of population must be slowed down. Indeed, only when we start to make efforts now, can we be sure to have a bright future. 涉及知识点:假日。

World Cup DadFor most of my 15 years, my father usually said very little to my mother and me. He preferred reading the newspaper or watching football matches on television to talking to his family.Everything changed one morning. As soon as I came downstairs to breakfast, I could see that he wasn't his usual reserved(缄默的)self. "Can't wait! FIFA World Cup! Big match! Must see!"1 quickly figured out what ail the excitement was about: Dad is a big football fan.I had never been interested in football, but Dad's excitement that morning made me more and more curious. I had to find out why this sport was making my normally reserved father act like a five-year-old on his first trip to Disneyland.Dad decided that we should all eat at a little German restaurant so that we could watch the World Cup while eating. Suicide has been a cause of concern in most societies for a long time. The classical Greeks, for example, required people who wanted to kill themselves to get permission from the senate. While this law is not without humor by today's standards, it clearly shows an awareness of the problem in times gone by.In today's society, suicide is much more prevalent than we want to admit. Why do people try to take their own lives? The motives for suicide can be categorized into areas such as a failure, wrath(暴怒) , the needfor attention, stress, and so on. However, the qualities of a person who wants to take his own life change from person to person, making it difficult to depict(描写)the typical victim. To make the problem even more confusing, people will often camouflage(掩盖)their true feelings, thus causing their friends to disregard problems that should be viewed as serious. In theUnited States, a network of centers has been created to attempt to prevent suicides.People who are bitter, worded, or depressed are encouraged to contact workers at these centers. These workers, often trained volunteers, offer benevolent advice to the callers, trying to help the callers to see that suicide as a solutions to problems is an illusion. The accomplishments of these centers, insofar(到这个程度)as their effectiveness to reduce suicide is concerned, are minimal However, they have helped a lot of people with a wide variety of problems. So, in the somewhat amorphous(难以名状的)area of man helping his fellow man, they are certainly a success.1.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?A.The classical Greeks did not know the existence of suicideB.Suicide has always been prevalent in all parts of the worldC.In today's society, there are quite a number of people who commit suicideD.Nowadays suicide is not as common as it was in the past2.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a motive for suicide?A.InsanityB.PressureC.The need for attentionD.Great anger3.Which of the following statements is NOT true?A.People who want to take their own lives often disguise their feelingsB.It is difficult to describe what kind of people tend to commit suicideC.Suicide has been a problem in most societies since ancient timesD.People who commit suicide all share certain characteristics4.The word "benevolent" means ( ).A.relevantB. kindC. seriousD. effective5.The third paragraph mainly tells us that ( ).A.a network of centers has been quite effective in reducing suicideB.a network of centers has been quite successful in reducing suicideC.people are making efforts to help those who tend to commit suicide and in a way, they are successfulD.in theUnited States, people who want to commit suicide call a network of centers to get help1.【解析】C主题思想题。

Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.Paul:I think books will be more affordable. They are pretty expensive. Publishers are so silly be-cause they focus on "We're not going to be selling so many hardcover books at $26. " But you're going to sell infinitely more electronically, so what are you complaining about? I view it as a grea-ter opportunity. My e-reader is great because I travel, and I don't want to carry a billion things with me.David:I don't own an e-reader, and I've never read a page on an e-reader. I do everything I can to avoid more screen time. Not to play down the value of a physical book, when it comes to somebody investing in one, it's something you want to keep. You have to give readers a choice, between a ric- her experience with physical books, and a more lifeless experience through an electronic reader.James:The new immigrants don't shoot the old inhabitants whenthey come in. One technology tends to supplement rather than substitute. How you read is not as important as: Will you read? Will you read something that's a book-the sustained train of thought of one person speaking to another?Search techniques are embedded in e-books that invite people to dip into something rather than follow a full train of thought.Alex:We've maintained in the last few years there will be fewer bookstores. We have the best busi-ness model in the world. Books are still a majority of what we sell in stores, but they are becoming less and less. About 50 percent of physical books are sold in non-bookstore outlets, like drugstores and club stores. There are people with agendas in this industry, but the physical book is going no- where.William:E-readers take out the paper middleman and give me what I want from books: the words. SECTION III Reading Comprehension Part A(40 minutes) Text 1 46、根据下列材料,请回答46-60题: In 1997, 25 Japanese citizens, all older than 60, launched Jeeba (the name means "old man and old woman") to make senior-friendly products. They knew they were making history when they coined their company motto : "Of the elderly, by the elderly and for the elderly. " They do not hire young people, and the oldest of their workers is 75. Firms run by senior citizens are still a rarity, in Japan and worldwide. But the elderly have numbers on their side. Healthier and longer-living seniors, born immediately after World War II,are reaching retirement age in huge numbers all over the developed world. Extremely low birthrates in those same countries mean there are far fewer young workers to take their place. One likely con-sequence is now clear: shrinking work forces. While the streamlining effects of international competition are focusing attention on the need to create and keep good jobs, those fears will eventually give way to worries about the growing short-age of young workers. One unavoidable solution: putting older people back to work, whether they like it or not. Indeed, advanced economies like those of Finland and Denmark have already raised their retirement ages. Others are under severe pressure to follow suit, as both the European Com-mission and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development have recently warned their members that their future prosperity depends on a growing contribution from the elderly. Whether these changes are good or bad news to workers depends on whether they anticipate retirement with eagerness or dread. In the United States, half of working-age Americans now expect to work into their 70s, whether by financial necessity or by lifestyle choice, according to a new study by Putnam Investments. Contrary to still widespread assumptions, there is very little hard evidence to suggest that com-panies cannot stay competitive with a rising share of older workers. At 13ritish hardware chain B&Q, its "elder worker" stores in Manchester and Exmouth were 18 percent more profitable than its regular outlets--due in part, the company says, to six times less employee turnover and 60 per-cent less shoplifting and breakage. 46、Jeeba' s difference from a conventional company mainly lies in A.the age of its employees B.the number of its owners C.the quality of its products D.the scope of its operations 47、 In the developed world, compared with young people, the elderly A.are better at business B.are greater in number C.have healthier lifestyles D.have more job opportunities 48、 According to the writer, in the current situation companies are faced with the tough task of A.creating good positions B.employing retired workers C.filling vacant positions D.replacing unskilled workers 49、 For future prosperity, many European countries will have to A.increase the number of young workers B.offer many senior-friendly jobs C.improve services for seniors D.raise their retirement ages 50、 B&Q' s "elder worker" stores are mentioned to show that the employment of older work-ers A.does not reduce a company' s competitiveness B.does not affect older workers' lifestyle Choices C.is not a usual practice among competitive firms D.is not good news to those who are eager to retire Text 2 根据下列材料,请回答51-65题: Here' s how I want to watch the 2014 Winter Olympics. I want to go to a Web site to see any event I want, whenever I want to watch it, on whatever screen I choose. I' 11 gladly pay. The technology exists to make this happen today. Yet nearly two decades after the introduction of the World Wide Web, this remains a fantasy. NBC, which broadcasted the Vancouver Olympics in the United States, wouldn' t put videos on its Web site until they had been shown on prime-time TV. So Americans had the weird experience of learning from a news report during the day that something fantastic had just happened, and then having to wait until that night' s broadcast to see it. Bloggers complained, but NBC wouldn' t give way. Its research shows that people like me, who want to watch the Olympics online, represent only 7 percent of the total audience. The other, bigger concern is: the Internet doesn' t deliver any money. Advertisers remain willing to pay big money to show their commercials on prime-time TV. But on the Internet? Not so much. So NBC clings to the old way of doing things. As it sees it, the prime-time show is the most important. To make matters worse, NBC was already expecting to lose $ 250 million on the 2010 Vancouver Games. Good luck persuading it to invest in a risky Web project. It's easy to blame the network executives. But the NBC guys and their like are only doing what makes sense. They're going where the money is. That needs to change. Yes, selling reporting of Olympic events over the Internet would drain away some of the prime-time audience, but my sense is many of the online subscribers would still watch the prime-time show. And over time, the subscription dollars could become a substantial rev- enue stream. Instead of viewing the Internet as a threat to prime time, the TV networks should see the Web as a way to sell even more of their product to a small but passionate subset of their audi-ence. I' m hoping that by 2014, that will have changed. 51、 According to the writer, watching the Olympics online as one likes A.is technologically impossible B.is still denied to the audience C.has been a dream for 20 years D.will no longer be free in 2014 52、 We learn that what Americans saw about the Vancouver Olympics A.was unavailable online B.differed from the news C.seemed weird to them D.was first shown on TV 53、 Bloggers complained about NBC' s A.neglect of those in the minority B.excessive online advertisements C.delay in providing videos online D.limited reporting on sports news 54、 After the 2010 Vancouver Games, NBC is likely to A.improve its prime-time show B.continue its current practice C.raise its price for advertising D.try its luck in a web program 55、 The writer thinks the TV networks should view the Web as a potential to help them to A.make dramatic profits B.develop new products C.satisfy their subscribers D.divide prime-time revenues Text 3 根据下列材料,请回答56-70题: One important thing during the pre-Christmas rush at our house was the arrival of my daughter' s kindergarten report card. She got high praise for her reading, vocabulary and overall en-thusiasm. On the other hand, we learnt that she has work to do on her numbers and facility with the computer, though the detailed handwritten report her teachers prepared is absent of any words that might be interpreted as negative in describing her efforts. A number system indicates how she' s measuring up in each area without any mention of passing or failing. All of which seems to make my daughter' s school neither fish nor fowl when it comes to the debate over the merits of giving formal grades to kids. At one level, the advantages and disadvanta-ges are obvious. A grade system provides a straightforward standard by which to measure how your child is progressing at school--and how he or she is getting on compared to other children. But as writer Sue Ferguson notes, "Grades can deceive. " The aim should be "to measure learning, not simply what a student can recall on a test. " The two aren' t the same--and if you doubt that as an adult, ask yourself whether you could sit down without any preparation and still pass those high-school-level examinations. If you' re old enough, you' ve lived through this debate before. At one time, it was considered unfair to put children in direct competition with one another if it could be avoided. The inten-tion behind tha.t may have been good, but it ignored the fact that competition, and the will to come out on top, are essential components of the human condition. This time around, educators working with a no-grades approach are emphasizing different rea-sons. The thing is, that approach is much more commonplace in the adult workplace than is the tra-ditional pass-fail system we place on our children. Many workplaces conduct regular employee eval-uations. There are usually fairly strict limits to what an employer can tell an employee in those eval-uations-and even then, negative evaluations can be challenged by the employee. No matter where you sit in the debate over the grade system, then, the real question is this: if it' s so good for kids, why isn't that also true for adults? 56、The school report indicates that the writer' s daughter cks interest in her school work B.ranks among the best at language C.has some trouble with her handwriting D.needs to improve in math and computer skills 57、 We can learn that the girl' s school tries to deliver the report A.in a positive way B.in a scientific way C.in an attractive way D.in an enthusiastic way 58、 Sue Ferguson seems dissatisfied with the grade system for its focus on A.the process of getting the knowledge B.the capability of memorizing for the test C.the procedure of measuring learning D.the standard of comparing schools 59、 The writer would agree that cutting children off from competition is A.fit for human development B.fit for their age and experience C.against a key part of human nature D.out of consideration for children 60、 It can be learned that today's educators supporting the no-grades approach insist that A.kids be allowed to challenge the negative evaluations B.the traditional teacher-student relationship be changed C.the evaluation system for kids be similar to that for adults D.strict rules be set up in evaluating school children SECTION III Reading Comprehension Part B(40 minutes) 61、根据下列材料,请回答61-65题: Directions: Read the texts from a magazine in which five people voice their different opinions in response to an article on the issue of praising. For questions 61 to 65, match the name of each person (61 to 65) to one of the statements ( A to G) given below. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET1. Mike : Praise often and sincerely--it' s as simple as that. Employees want to feel needed and appreci-ated. By offering sincere praise with examples about what they did right, you' ll go far in creating an energetic team. Meanwhile, I don't agree with the assertion that "to focus on what needs im-proving isn' t good management. " In fact, it' s the balance of praise along with constructive criti-cism that drives employees to work smarter and reach higher. Frank: This article makes a valid point that needs to be understood, especially for the new generation of workers, my generation. We don' t see ourselves as parts in the machine to be put in the dark to work. My generation needs respect in return from our employer, we need to feel appreciated beyond just a pay check, it' s the difference between being fulfilled at our career and being sad at our job. Joyce : One skill missing in today's workplace is the ability to build effective business relationships. At the core of that relationship is the need for consistent feedback. "How am I doing?" is a ques-tion that should be answered consistently. When you tell an employee once a year what is needed to improve, you have not done your job as a leader--build skills, provide feedback and help the em-ployee grow and develop. Ellen: I don' t see a problem with praising employees when it' s truly deserved ( insincere praise is an entirely different story). It' s a cost-free "benefit", if you will, in that it allows employees to see that their efforts are both noticed and valued. In the work world there are always people available to tell that you are doing something wrong and far too few occasions when employees are told that they've done something right! Diana: Praise what the employee did. Be specific about why it was helpful. An employee who contin-ually earns your praise also deserves your attention as to how else to reward their behavior. Mean-ingful praise encourages people beyond anything else. Written comments are available for later re-view. They give them confidence that they can "do it again. " I never regretted praising an employ-ee who deserved it but often kicked myself for missing an opportunity. Now match the name of each person (61 to 65) to the appropriate statement Note: there are two extra statements. Statements [A]Praise combined with criticism is helpful. [B] Praise can bring about many kinds of desired behavior. [C] Employees may feel it hard to accept.insincere praise. [D] Let employees know exactly for what they are praised. [E] In my opinion, we are not generous enough to give praise. [F] Employees need helpful advice on a regular basis. [G] Money alone cannot guarantee a sense of career fulfillment for me. 61、 Mike 62、 Frank 63、 Joyce 64、 Ellen 65、 Diana 参考答案及精析 第三部分阅读理解 Part A Text 1 参考译⽂: 1997年,年龄均超过60岁的25名⽇本市民发起了⼀场Jeeba运动(Jeeba意为⽼年男性与⼥性),⽣产适合于⽼年⼈使⽤的产品。

Social customs and ways of behaving change. Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered impolite behaviour for a man to smoke on street. No man who thought of himself by smoking when a lady was in a room.Customs also differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country? Or doesn't it matter? Should you use both hands when you are eating? Should leave one in your lap,or on the table? The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a wonman or offer their seat to a woman , and so will most Americans. Promptness is important both in England and in America. That is , if a dinner invitation is for 7 o'clock , the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay. The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feeluncomfortable-----especially if they are your guests. 2019年公共英语三级阅读理解试题(6)An alcohol breath test (ABT) is often used by the police to find out whether a person is drunk while driving. In the United States, the legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08% for people aged 21 years or older, while people under 21 are not allowed to drive a car with any level of alcohol in their body.A positive test result,a result over the legal limit, allows the police to arrest the driver. However, many people who tested positive on the test have claimed that they only drank a nonalcoholic energy drink. Can one of these energy drinks really cause someone to test positive on an ABT?Researchers in Missouri set up an experiment to find out.First, the amount of alcohol in 27 different popular energy drinks was measured. All but one had an alcohol level greater than 0.005%.In nine of the 27 drinks, the alcohol level was at least 0.096%.The scientists then investigated the possibility that these small levels of alcohol could be discovered by an ABT.They asked test subjects to drink a full can or bottle of an energy drink and then gave each subject an ABT one minute and 15 minutes after the drink was finished. For 11 of the 27 energy drinks, the ABT did find the presence of alcohol if the test was given within one minute after the drink was taken. However, alcohol could not be discovered for any of thedrinks if the test was given 15 minutes after the drink was consumed. This shows that when the test is taken plays an important role in the test result. The sooner the test is conducted after the consumption of these drinks, the more likely a positive alcohol reading will be obtained.小题1:What is the legal alcohol level for a 20yearold driver in the US?A.0.000%.B.0.005%.C.0.080%.D.0.096%.小题2:What is the purpose of the Missouri experiment?A.To introduce a new method of calculating blood alcohol levels.B.To discover the relation between energy drinks and ABT test results.C.To warn people of the dangers of drinking energy drinks.D.To change the current legal alcohol limit for drivers in the United States.小题3:The underlined word subjects in Paragraph 2 refers to________.A.the things that are being discussedB.areas of knowledge studied in schoolC.the participants in an experimentD.the people who belong to a country小题4:Which of the following affects the ABT test result most for energy drink consumers?A.The age of the person who takes the test.B.The place where the test is given.C.The equipment that the test uses.D.The time when the test is taken.小题5:Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.A driver whose blood alcohol level is found to be 0.1% will be arrested.B.No energy drinks really cause anyone to test positive on an ABT.C.Few popular energy drinks contain alcohol in them.D.Those taking an ABT 15 minutes after drinking alcohol cannot be found out.参考答案及解析小题1:C小题2:A小题3:C小题4:C小题5:D。

Teenage boys, regardless of race, are more likely to die from gunshot wounds than from all natural causes combined.By the time the average American child leaves primary school, he or she will witness 8,000 murders and more than 100,000 acts of violence on television.Youth are becoming involved in violence at an alarming rate. In fact, the young arrest rate for murder doubled, from 6 arrests per 100,000 youth aged from 10 to 17 to over 12 per 100,000.The American Psychological Association Commission on Violence and Youth reported on a study of first and second graders in Washington DC:45% said they had witnessed muggings (行凶抢劫),31 % said they had witnessed shootings, and 39% said they had seen dead bodies. For the many youth who have not been directly exposed to violence in their own communities, the entertainment media (television, movies, music and video games) provides many opportunities for children to see and hear violent exchanges. Research shows that there are about 5-6 violent acts per hour on prime time and 20-25 violent acts on Saturday morning children’s programming. In its report, the American Psychological Association (APA) reported that viewing violence on television hurts children in many ways. In particular, the APA concludes that children may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others,be more fearful of the world around them,be more likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways toward others, and gradually accept violence as a way to solve problems. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry also cautions that children may imitate the violence they observe on television.Another form of violence involving youth is physical punishment in the schools. This form of discipline still remains legally supported in 23 nations in America. The Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Education reported that 555,000 students were physically punished in the schools during this school year. Although such punishment has been regarded as an effective method of discipline by those who apply it, the findings are obvious that physical punishment does not work and that children who are victims of physical punishment are subject to potential long-term physical and emotional damage.练习题:Choose correct answers to the question:1.According to the passage, the American teenage boys, lives are most threatened by ______A.gun murdersB.natural diseases violenceD. physical punishment2.The author tends to use the fourth paragraph to support the idea that _____A.many youth have watched much violence on TVB.youth violence in Washington D.C.is very seriousC.fights may be the most widely-seen youth violenceD.American youth have been exposed to much violence3.The APA indicates that too much TV violence may change children ______A.to become separated from the worldB.to remain indifferent to others’painC.to solve problems only by violenceD.to be fearful of aggressive behaviors4.The passage does NOT discus that many youth become victim of ______A.murdersB.family violenceC. 一、Reading Comprehension (共60小题,共120.0分)Read the following three texts .Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D . 第1题
It was fifteen past nine as Marie hurried into the office building where she was going to work. Her bus had inched along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided to start out half an hour earlier the next day.
Once inside the lobby, she had to stand at the elevators and wait several minutes before she could get on one going to the sixth floor. When she finally reached the office marked "Smith Enterprises", she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no reply. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no answer. From inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in. Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she had the interview with Mr. Smith, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an office at all. The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking. In the front of the room, somebody must have just told a good joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her.
Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any attention to Made. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his work, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. Smith, who would arrive at any moment. Then Made realized that the day's work in the office began just before Mr. Smith arrived. Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on the same train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35,so that his staff knew exactly when to start working.
Made felt nervous when she knocked at the door because______.
A it was her first day in a new job
B she was a little bit late for work
C she was afraid that she had gone to the wrong place
