胡锦涛总书记提出的“八荣八耻”社会主义荣辱观是具有中国特色的至理名言，如何把它翻译成同原文意似、神似并且形似的英文？依我多年翻译国家领导人讲话的经验来看，首先要注意的是：要站在一定的高度上来思考。这个高度就是政治上的高度，也就是说作为译者必须加强政治学习，深入领会领导人讲话的精神实质，没有这样一个思想上的高度是做不好时事政治方面的翻译工作的。除此之外，英译文从内涵到外延都必须做到既忠实于中文原文又符合英语习惯，这是做好翻译工作技术上的要求，没有这一点也是不行的。我是这样翻译的：
honor to those who quest for science, and
shame on those who prefer to be ignorant;
honor to those who are hard-working, and
shame on those who detest having to work;
以遵纪守法为荣、以违法乱纪为耻，
以艰苦奋斗为荣、以骄奢淫逸为耻。

语言风格的雅度：最高领导人的指示，其语言文字的风格应该是既便于书面表述又适合口头表达，略显庄重但又不致古板，因而我在选词造句时采用了normal style 而不是very formal style 或very informal style。
表现形式的美度：“八荣八耻”的原文，每行的字数相同，句子排列非常整齐，形成了视觉和听觉上的美感。这样就为广大群众所喜闻乐见，便于上口传诵和记忆。这一表现形式上的特点是精心设计的效果，也是独具匠心的创造。因此，我把它翻译成英语时也尽量做到大体整齐、基本对称。而且我的翻译还考虑到了全局（包括“要教育广大干部群众特别是青少年树立社会主义荣辱观，坚持”这一部分）和局部（“八荣八耻”部分）的关系，便于随意拆合。
