Since 1985, Johnny Jennings, 86, has been selling newspapers and magazines to a recycling center with his son. By the time Jennings' only child was 17, he stopped joining his father. Even though his son is all grown up now, Jennings hasn't slowed down his efforts. In fact, he has turned his recycling money into something bigger.
The Ringgold, Georgia native visits local churches and businesses to collect paper, which he brings to a recycling center for money. But instead of putting those earnings in his own bank account, he sends every dollar to Georgia Baptist Children's Homes & Family Ministries. Once a year, he'll give the organization a check somewhere between $10,000 and $35,000. By 2016, that tallied up to $400,000.
These days, Jennings' recycling has turned into a community effort. After he has made his own rounds recycling paper from businesses and churches, he'll find more items waiting for him at home. Community members drop off other recyclables at his house so he can sell them, along with books, food, clothes, and other items to give away.
Recycling centers typically pay just onehalf to three cents per pound of paper, but Jennings' visits have added up the big time. In 2016 alone, he sold more than 400,000 pounds of paper and 51,000 aluminum cans (铝罐), and collected more than 32,000 pennies. Over the course of 32 years he has recycled more than 9.8 million pounds of paper, saving an estimated 79,000 trees in the process.
Jennings says he'll continue raising money for charity as long as his health allows.

Despite being used by 1.34 billion people each year, traveling on the Tube in London can actually be quite lonely.
One citizen, however, is trying to change this. “You get on the Tube and it's completely silent and it's weird,” says Jonathan Dunne, who has started a worldwide dialogue after giving out badges (徽章) with the words “Tube chat?” last month, encouraging passengers in London to get talking to one another. “I handed out 500 badges during rush hour in a city of 8 million, expecting most of them to be thrown away, but after about 24 hours it completely snowballed,” he says. Dunne and his “Tube chat” campaign have since been reported by media across the world, seeing TV interviews in Sweden, Brazil and the UK, as well as countless website, newspaper and magazine appearances.
Although Dunne says he's received mostly positive feedback, not everyone agrees with his idea. Londoner Brian Wilson responded with a campaign of his own, handing out 500 badges with t he words “Don't even think about it” on them. Michael Robinson, 24, a student from London, agrees. “Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work. It doesn't need to be spoiled by people coming up and chatting to you,” he says.
“People assume that I just walk up and talk to strangers, which I don't, but it's been a great way to meet people you would never have normally spoken to,” Dunne says.
So if you ever end up using public transport in the West, why not say hello to the person next to you? Just make sure to check for a badge first.
8.How did Dunne encourage London passengers to talk with each other?
A.By putting up posters on the tube.
B.By advocating his idea on the media.
C.By offering passengers special badges.
D.By starting a dialogue with passengers.
根据第二段的“who has started a worldwide dialogue after giving out badges(徽章) with the wo rds ‘Tube chat?’”
9.How is Dunne's campaign getting along?
A.It has caught international attention.
B.It has become a worldwide campaign.
C.Most passengers have refused to accept it.
D.Wilson has made great efforts to promote it.
根据第二段的“Dunne and his ‘Tube chat' campaign have since been reported by media across the world, seeing TV interviews in Sweden,Brazil and the UK,as well as countless website, newspaper and magazine appearances.”
10.According to Michael Robinson, what should tube passengers do?
A.Hand in their feedback in time.
B.Walk up and talk to strangers.
C.Stop using public transport.
D.Enjoy the peace quietly.
根据第三段的“Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work. It doesn't need to be spoiled by people co ming up and chatting to you”可知,Michael Robinson认为乘伦敦地铁是人们上下班时享受安静的时刻,而不是交谈的时刻,故D项正确。
11.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Tube Chat or Not
B.Lonely Travel in the London Tube
C.Silence on the Tube
D.Tube Passengers Wearing Badges

The Swedish Academy that awards the Nobel Prize has apparently still been unable to contact Bob Dylan about his acceptance of the honour. On Thursday, Dylan gave a concert in Las Vegas and didn't mention the fact that he had just won the world's most honoured literary award. He didn't acknowledge it on Friday when he performed in Coachella, either. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, he said that he'd “absolutely” attend the ceremony “if it's at all possible”, and he finally called the Academy to accept the prize though later he wrote a personal letter to the Academy, which said he would not receive the award in person at the December ceremony in Stockholm. But what would happen if Dylan had continued to screen the Academy's calls?
JeanPaul Sartre is the only known winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature to have declined the award voluntarily; he had written a letter to the committee in
1964 asking not to be considered at all, but these were the days before email, and the letter arrived when they had already decided to give it to him that year. Sartre believed every individual is responsible for creating a purpose for their life. By accepting the prize, Sartre would have to associate himself with the institution that honoured him. “It is not the same thing if I sign JeanPaul Sartre or if I sign JeanPaul Sartre, Nobel Prize winner,” he complained. “A writer must refuse to allow himself to be transformed into an institution(名流), even if it takes place in the most honourable form.”
Other writers have declined it because they feared persecution(迫害). The Soviet writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn did not travel to Stockholm for his ceremony in 1970, because he was concerned that the Soviet Union would not allow him to return afterwards. The committee refused Solzhenitsyn's request for a public ceremony at the Swedish Embassy in Moscow, so he initially turned down the prize, but formally accepted it in 1974 after he was exiled (放逐).
But while it is possible to refuse to accept the prize money, it isn't possible to refuse the title. According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, Nobel Prizes cannot ever be returned.
On Thursday, Dylan gave a concert in Las Vegas and didn't mention the fact that he had just won the world's most honoured literary award.(第一段第二句)
12. Which word can replace the underlined word “screen” in Paragraph 1?
A.Ignore. B.Examine.
C.Abuse. D.Blame.
13. Why did Sartre refuse the Nobel Prize?
A.To keep things unchanged.
B.He thought ill of the prize.
C.To avoid adding weight to his name.
D.The committee's letter arrived too late.
根据第二段中的“A writer must refuse to allow himself to be transformed into an institution(名流),even if it takes place in the most honourable form.”
14. What did Solzhenitsyn ask the committee to do?
A.Help him travel to Stockholm.
B.Award him in Moscow.
C.Publish his works worldwide.
D.Protect him from being prisoned.
根据第三段中的“The committee refused Solzhenitsyn's request for a public ceremony at the Swedish Embassy in Moscow”可知,Solzhenitsyn曾向委员会要求在莫斯科瑞典大使馆颁奖,但被委员会拒绝了。
故选B 项。
15. What would be the possible result if Dylan refused the award?
A.The prize money would belong to him.
B.The award would be still listed in his name.
C.He would be forced to attend the ceremony.
D.Someone else would accept the title instead.
根据最后一段中的“...it isn't possible to refuse the title. According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, Nobel Prizes cannot ever be returned.”
Summer is a time to look forward to because there is no school to get you down. __1__ You just need to stay active, occupied, and have an open mind.
•Read if you feel bored.
Subscribe to a magazine or comic if you don't like books. Choose whatever ageapp ropriate book that interests you and start reading. __2__ In your backyard or on your balcony, on your bed or out by the lake. Reading doesn't have to be boring.
•Get caught up on schoolwork.
Not all of us are straight “A” students. Take this time to go to the library and review material for the next year in advance. __3__ No need to rush or stress out. It's just important not to forget anything you learned in the past year over the summer.
•Travel.
If you usually go on vacation in the summer, start packing now! Can't afford to travel far? No problem! __4__ Go on a road trip with your friends and family. Find out what's on the other side of that lake. Be creative!
• __5__
If summers are hot where you live, you can go to the beach with your family or friends. Also, some water parks have great discounts at times during the summer. But be careful, if there's a heat wave outside, you'd better stay out of the sun, or even go indoors.
A.Beat the heat.
B.You can read anywhere.
C.Spend a lot of time outside.
D.Do some exploration in your own city.
E.Since it's summer, you can do this at your own pace.
F.To have a good summer, you don't have to do anything expensive.
G.If you have an idea, no matter how ridiculous and crazy it may be, go to do it.
1.答案与解析:F 根据本空后的“You just need to stay active, occupied, and have an open mind.”可知,这里就怎样度过暑假提建议,F项中的不定式表示目的,“you don't have to do anything expensive”中的“don't have to”与后一句中的“just need to”相对应,且空后是对F项的具体解释,所以选F项。
2.答案与解析:B 根据本段的主题句“Read if you feel bored.”可知,本段讲阅读方面的事情,而选项中只有B项与该话题有关,所以选B项,且空后的“In your backyard or on your balcony, on your bed or out by the lake.”
this time to go to the library and review material for the next year in advance.”。
4.答案与解析:D 根据本段主题“Travel”和该空后面的“Go on a road trip with your friends and family. Find out what's on the other side of that lake.”
