Some experts believed that the cooling climate during the Ice Age was to blame for their extinction.Scientists reported last week they had studied genetic data from 59 cave bears. Their bones were recovered from seven countries: France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Switzerland. From the genetic information, the scientists noted a decrease in the cave bear population beginning about 50,000 years ago. That is around the time of the arrival of Homo sapiens (现代人), or modern humans, in Eastern Europe. The researchers said they observed a sharp drop in the bears' numbers about 40,000 years ago. That coincides with(与……同时发生) the spread of Homo sapiens throughout Europe. The animals disappeared about 20,000 years ago. The cave bear lived in the Ice Age at the same time as other now extinct creatures. The bear was as big as a modern polar bear, but ate only plants. It appears often in prehistoric(史前的) cave paintings. There has been a scientific debate about what led to the extinction of the cave bear. Some scientists believe that the climate change greatly reduced the plants they needed, while others have blamed it on human activities, including hunting and taking over the caves where the bears gave birth and slept during winter. The bear's population remained largely unchanged for long periods before climate cooling, including during two noticeably cold periods and other cooling events.Homo sapiens appeared in Africa more than 300,000 years ago and later moved to other areas. The study offered new evidence that the arrival of Homo sapiens led to ruin for many kinds of animals across Eurasia, the Americas and Australia.1.How did scientists research on cave bears?A.By studying the bones found in some countries.B.By observing the paintings on the cave walls.C.By being told from generation to generation.D.By do research on the polar bears.2.When did the cave bear die out?A.About 50,000 years ago.B.About 40,000 years ago.C.About 20,000 years ago.D.More than 300,000 years ago.3.What can we learn according to the fourth paragraph?A.Sudden change in climate made cave bears die out.B.Cave bears couldn't adapt to the cold environment as quickly as possible.C.The loss of cave bears' habitats caused damage to their existence.D.Cold periods were very common thousands of years ago.4.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.Humans Are Perhaps Partly to Blame for Cave Bears' DisappearanceB.Homo Sapiens Hunting Kinds of Animals across EurasiaC.A Debate about Why Cave Bears Suddenly DisappearedD.Scientists Studied Bones Discovered in Seven CountriesB(2021河北邢台高一上期中,)It is widely believed that biodiversity (生物多样性) is promoted to save species. But in reality species exist only as part of ecosystems and cannot survive unless their ecosystems are protected along with the diversity they contain as much as possible.Protecting habitats is important for keeping biodiversity. In 2003, over 102,000 habitats covering nearly 19 million square kilometres, or 11.5% of theworld's land surface, were under some form of protection. Though this has been a great improvement since 1962, when just l,000 protected habitats were listed, it is still not considered enough to stop the ecocide that is endangering the world's biodiversity. For a number of environmentalists, protecting the world's 25 biodiversity hotspots(热点地区) is critical to saving habitats and species. But many hotspots are endangered already, having lost up to three-quarters of their original plants. The poor state of most biodiversity hotspots results directly from population growth and migration(迁移) into these areas. A study found that by the mid-1990s around 1.1 billion people had lived in these hotspots. Moreover, the annual population growth rate in these areas was 1.8%, higher than the global average of 1.4%. The PAI report concluded that human-related environmental changes would continue to put pressure on hotspots. Therefore, keeping biodiversity requires paying close attention to population size.Protecting hotspots is not simply a matter of putting up fences or employing guards. The best results will be achieved when local people are educated about the value of wildlife, and actually gain a share of the benefits from eco-tourism. Only then do they have a chance to see the benefits of protecting hotspots.5.What can we infer from Paragraph 1?A.The loss of any species can affect humans.B.Endangered species are paid more attention to by humans.C.Species can still survive when their ecosystems are destroyed.D.Ecosystem protection is as important as diversity protection.6.What does the underlined word “ecocide” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Ecosystem protection.B.Reduction in the number of species.C.Serious damage to habitats.D.Habitat protection.7.What's the direct cause of the terrible state of the hotspots?A.Population growth in hotspots.B.Migration out of these areas.C.Global warming.D.The global average population growth rate.8.What's the author's opinion on protecting the hotspots?A.It's simple to carry out.B.It leads to the increase in tourists.C.It's closely connected with local people.D.It suggests that the local people be well educated.Ⅱ.七选五(2020山东德州高一上期末,)China has made great improvements in environmental protection during the past 70 years. 1 Each species on Earth has a role to play in the ecosystem. In recent decades,a series of wildlife-protection movements has been carried out by the central government. 2 The giant panda and the crested ibis(朱鹮) are among these successful stories. The giant panda used to have a population of 1,114 in the 1970s. It now totals 1,864 thanks to 52 protection areas. 3 By the end of last year, seven of the nine released pandas had survived in the wild. 4 In 1981,only seven crested ibises were found in Yang County,Shaanxi Province.Since then, breeding programs have helped the population reach 2,000. China has even sent crested ibises to Japan and South Korea in recent years to help with the species' survival.5 Key projects will be continually carried out to improveprotection, including making the lists of wild animals and plants under State protection, and also fighting against illegal wildlife trade, which includes the ivory(象牙)trade.A.Another species was once thought to be extinct.B.Protecting wildlife is, without doubt, an important part.C.China will continue its efforts in the wildlife protection.D.People call for immediate protection of the remaining species.E.Scientists have worked to feed pandas and then release them into the wild.F.As environmental damage has increased, signs of change have appeared around the world.G.Several species in danger of extinction have made impressive progress thanks to the methods.1. 2. 3. 4. 5.答案全解全析Part 1 Warming Up, Pre-reading, Reading &Comprehending基础过关练Ⅰ.1.decrease 2.hunt 3.certain 4.contain 5.affected6.employed7.appreciateⅡ.1.are being protected from 2.in peace 3.pay close attention to 4.burst into laughter 5.dying out 6.in relief 7.in danger ofⅢ.1.protection考查名词。

Unit 4 Wildlife protectionSection ⅠWarming up & Reading—Prereading Ⅰ.阅读理解AGeorge Watford works at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) in New York City.He gets some unusual phone calls. One day,he got a call about a mou ntain lion living in a samll building.“We didn’t believe it,” Watford said.“But when we went out there, sure enough, there was a mountain lion sitting at the front window looking out at us”.The big cat’s owner knew that his neighbors were unhappy about the animal. He didn’t try to stop us taking it away.In one year, the ASPCA took in 9,459 different animals, not counting cats and dogs. That number includes a lot of rabbits and monkeys, but the ASPCA has also taken many other exotic (外来的) pets from people’s homes. These animals can’t be set free into the wild because they wouldn’t survive. The ASPCA tries to find homes for them in zoos or special areas for animals. It’s against the law to sell wild animals in New York City. Many buildings don’t even allow dogs and c ats,not to mention more exotic animals.Still, the ASPCA takes away most of the exotic animals not because of complaints (怨言),but because the pet’s owner needs help.A lovely baby lion or bear will finally grow up to be dangerous.“When they bite (咬人),it isn’t because they hate you. It’s because they’re wild animals,” said exotic animal expert Kathi Travers.Travers is quick to give speeches against raising wild animals as pets.Too often people think that caring for a wild animal is the same as caring for a dog or a cat.“To love an animal is not enough,”Travers said.“There has to be respect (尊重),and respect is not taking an animal, sticking it in a little cage, and expecting the animal to be happy.”语篇解读本文是说明文。

Unit 4 Wildlife ProtectionThe old Elephant House at the National Zoo in Washington D.C. has been renovated (翻新) to include a lot more space for the giant animals to play, rest and even take a shower. It has been renamed the Elephant Community Center, and it also offers a lot more for human guests.“It's a great place for elephants to socialize,”said Marie Galloway, who is the elephant manager at the zoo.The community center is designed to hold as many as 10 elephants. Although the zoo plans to increase the herd (象群), there are now just three elephants: Ambika, Shanthi and Kandula.Galloway said each animal reacted (作出反应) differently to the new space. Shanthi, 38 years old, walked right in and explored everywhere. Ambika, 65, was very cautious (谨慎的) the first day, not sure if the new space was safe. And Kandula, Shanthi's 11yearold son, had a funny way of dealing with the unknown. “He backed his way in,” Galloway said with a laugh.“The elephants are already enjoying throwing sand on one another,” said Galloway.People also have a lot more to do than in the old building, where they had few chances to learn about endangered species from Asia. There's a display featuring one of Kandula's old toys: a 750pound tire. Visitors can watch a video of him playing. There are several other handson activities, including a machine that compares elephant sounds and human voices. You also can make a promise to save the elephants.Lastly, “protection” is the message zoo officials hope visitors will take away from the e xhibition. “We're hoping people will come to ... and become educated,” Galloway said. “And take action to protect elephants.”Section_ⅠWarming Up & Reading —Prereading[原文呈现]HOW DAISY LEARNED TO HELP WILDLIFEDaisy had always longed to help① endangered species② of wildlife.

Farming and Wildlife ProtectionAlmost half of the world's 17,000 wildlife protected areas are being used for farming.A report says using land for agriculture is causing many kinds of plants and animals to disappear.Farmers must use better farming methods that provide food while protecting wildlife.Experts say ten percent of the land on Earth has been designed to protect wildlife.Yet these nature preserves often share common ground with farms in many poor countries. Many of these areas are where animal species are most at risk.Experts say many species,in preserves are dying out because of the agricultural areas that surround them. This is because many animals need to move to other places to survive. The limited space in nature preserves cannot fill this need. The lands that would be needed to increase protected areas already are being used to grow food for local people and support local economies.Experts say half of the animal species in the preserves could be lost because their populations are too small to guarantee their survival.[阅读障碍词]1.agriculture n.农业2.preserve n. 保护区v. 保持;维持3.species n. 种类;物种4.risk n. 危险;风险5.limited adj. 有限的6.economy n. 经济7.guarantee vt. 保证[诱思导读]1.What do you think farmers should do to protect the wildlife?2.Why do farmers in poor countries increase land for food?A.To provide animals with food.B.To feed themselves.C.To help other countries' farmers.D.To destroy the preserves.[答案] 1.Farmers should stop using protected areas to grow food.2.BSection ⅠWarming Up,Prereading & ReadingⅠ. 选择下列句中相应词组的汉语意思( )2.No one was injured, and we all smiled in relief.( )3.He is in danger of losing his job if he goes on like this.( )4.Umbrellas are commonly used to protect people from rain.( )5.Hearing the funny story, all of us burst into laughter.( )6.I had warned him of the possible danger, but he didn't pay attention to it.[答案]1-6 BCAFEDHOW DAISY LEARNED TO HELP WILDLIFEDaisy had always longed to help① endangered species(物种) of wildlife(野生动植物).One day she woke up and found a flying carpet(地毯) by her bed.“Where do you want to go?” it asked.Daisy responded immediately.“I'd like to see some endangered wildlife,” she said.“Please take me to a distant(远的) land where I can find the animal that gave fur(毛;软毛) to make this sweater.” At once the carpet flew away and took her to Tibet. There Daisy saw an antelope looking sad.It said,“We're being killed for the wool beneath our stomachs. Our fur is being used to make sweaters for people like you.As a result,we are now an endangered species.”At ② that Daisy cried,“I'm sorry I didn't know that.I wonder what is being done to help you.Flying carpet, please show me a place where there's some wildlife protection.”戴茜是如何学会保护野生动物的戴茜一直都渴望帮助那些濒临灭绝的野生动植物。

First, let me talk about the teaching material.Part1 the Teaching MaterialThis unit is to introduce to us the importance of wildlife protection. The reading passage is the center of this unit. It is made up of 3 paragraphs, that is, why we need wildlife protection, a good example of wildlife protection and what we can get from wildlife protection. The text is the most important teaching material in this lesson, which extends the main topic “wildlife protection” and contains most of the vocabulary and grammar points that students should learn in this unit.Part2 Teaching Aims and important and difficult pointsKnowledge aims:(1)to help students to understand and master the words, phrases and sentence patterns.(2)to know some basic information about the endangered animals and wildlife situation and protection.Ability aims:(1)To improve the students’ organizing and usi ng skills of English as the second language(2) To understand the main idea, to scan for the needed information and to grasp the detailsEmotional aims:(1)Help students understand the importance of the wildlife protection and make them be more active in the helping wildlife.(2)Develop students’ sense of cooperative learningTeaching Key Points And Difficult Points:Teaching Key Points:1. To help the students get a general idea of the whole passage, and some detailed information and language points as well.2. To understand the importance of wildlife protection and then do something for wildlifeTeaching difficult points :1. The students use their own words to express their own ideas.2. the usage of present progressive passive voice.Part3Analysis of the StudentsAlthough the students have the basic abilities of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, they still need many opportunities to practice what they have learned, to express their ideas, feelings, and experience and to develop their autonomous learning ability and cooperative learning ability.Part4 Teaching and Learning MethodsTeaching Methods:municative Language TeachingLanguage is used for communication. It’s learner-centered and emphasizes communication and real-life situations.b. Task-based Language TeachingA task resembles activities which our students or other people carry out in everyday life, Learners should be given opportunities to reflect on what they have learned and how well they are doing.c. Computer Assisted Language TeachingLanguage learning needs a context, which can help the learners to understand thelanguage and then can product comprehensible output, so computer has the advantages to make the materials attractiveLearning Methods:Task-based, self-dependent and cooperative learning.Part 5 Teaching ProcedureStep 1 Lead-in“Interest is the best teacher.” Therefore, at the very beginning of the class, I should spark the students’ mind to focus on the centre topic “the importance of w ildlife protection”I’ll show them some beautiful pictures of wild animals, such as lions, Tibet antelopes, monkeys and so on. Ask them what they know about those animals. The answers must relate to their present situation, such as die out, dangerous, decrease and so on.After this, the students will be eager to something about the endangered wildlife and this is the very time to naturally lead the class into Step 2.Step 2 Reading for information: skimming and scanningIn this step, I use Task-based Language Teaching method, which can give students a clear and specific purpose while skimming and scanning the context.Task 1 General ideaThe students will be asked to just glance at the title and the pictures of the passage, and then guess what t hey will read in the text. And they’ll be divided into groups of four to have a discussion. The purpose is to inspire the students to read actively, not passively. In addition, the task is to develop the students’ reading skill by making prediction and to encourage the students to express their thoughts in English and cooperate with each other.Task 2 Main idea of each paragraphCooperative learning can raise the students’ interest and create an atmosphere of achievement. Based on this theory, I divide the whole class into 3 groups to skim the whole text and get the main idea of each paragraph.Step 3 Reading for comprehensionThe purpose of reading is to get the correct and useful information. Students should not only have a high speed of reading but also have a correct understanding of details. Therefore the following practices on Page 27 can help check the situation.Step 4 Solving difficult language problems through readingIt’s important for language learners to learn important rules of grammar and use these rules to solve problems in reality. In the previous process of reading, the students must come across some difficult language obstacles, so it’s necessary for us to discuss and explain. This period of time belongs to students. They can ask any questions they come across in the process of learning. I’ll explain the questions and difficulties. The purpose of this is improving the students “questioning spirit” and dealing with the difficulties.Step 5 ConsolidationLanguage is learnt by communicating. It is my job to create an atmosphere for students to use the language. Here I design 2 activities1 Role readThe text is concentrated on the conversation between Daisy and Tibet antelope, elephant and monkey. Role read is a good chance to practice English in a cooperative learning atmosphere.2 DiscussionDuring making discussion, the students will deepen their understanding of the severe situation of wildlife and the importance of wildlife protection.1. Why is it important to protect wildlife?2. What must be done if wildlife protection is to succeed?Step 6 HomeworkAsk the students to write down their opinions about what they should do to protect the wild animals. The assignment enables the students to search various information resources, which can widen their view and continue to inspire their enthusiasm of learning.Part 6Blackboard design。

Significance of Wildlife ProtectionWith the rapid extinction of many wild species, more andmore people come to realize the great significance ofwildlife protection. Now people are realizing the problem in a new light thatwe protect ourselves through protecting wildlife. On the one hand, species of wildlife, as a critical joint of the ecological chain, helps to establish the ecological balance. If one species becomes extinct,it will disappear forever. What is more,it will inevitably result in a chain of wildlife extinction and the damage of the balance.Unpredictable disasters may occur. On the other hand, with the development of modern science and technology, man is just beginning to learn from wildlife. It is important for us to protect wildlife now before it is too late, because man has already polluted the environment seriously and threatened the existence of many wild species.Let's take action to protect wildlife.I have some suggestions.First, the governments should make laws to prevent them from being caught and killed.Second, the governments should educate people to love nature and protect it.Third, as for ourselves, we should take practical actions to protect our living environment.Learning to live in harmony with all wildlife is part of modern civilization.1.critical adj.决定性的2.establish vt.建立3.inevitably adv. 不可防止地4.unpredictable adj.不可预知的5.existence n. 存在6.harmony n. 协调1.List the importance of wildlife protection:2.What should we do to protect wildlife?【答案】 1.①Establishing the ecological balance.②Man can learn from wildlife.2.①Making laws;②Educating people;③Taking practical actions. 8.n. Unit 4 Wildlife protectionPart One: Teaching DesignPeriod 1: A sample lesson plan for reading(HOW DAISY LEARNED TO HELP WILDLIFE)AimsTo talk about endangered speciesTo read about wildlife protectionProceduresI. Warming up by learning about animalsLook at the photos below and listen to me telling you about the animals, the endangered animals. The Giant Panda is a mammal now usually classified in the bear family, Ursidae, that is native to central China. The Giant Panda lives in mountainous regions, like Sichuan and Tibet. TheGiant Panda is the symbol of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), a conservationorganization. Toward the latter half of the 20th century, the panda also became somewhat of a national emblem for China, and is now used in Chinese gold coins.Giant Pandas are an endangered species, threatened by continued loss of habitat and by a very low birthrate, both in the wild and in captivity. About 1,600 are believed to survive in the wild.Milu deer is a Chinese deer. It has a long tail, wide hooves, and branched antlers. Another Chinese name for it is “four unlikes,.〞because the animals were seen as having the horns of a stag, the neckof a camel, the foot of a cow, and the tail of an ass. These animals were first made known to Western science in the 19th century, by FatherArmand David, a French missionary working in China. At the time, the only surviving herd was in a preserve belonging to the Chinese emperor. The last herd of Milu deers that remained in China were eaten by Western and Japanese troops that were present at the time of the Boxer Rebellion. These deer are now found in zoos around the world, and a herd of Milu deer was reintroduced to DafengReserve, China in the late 1980s. They are classified as “critically endangered.〞in the wild, but do not appear to have suffered from a genetic bottleneck because of small population size.A tiger is a large cat famous for its beautiful fur of orange striped with black.Tigers live in Asia and are being very rare. This is due to people hunting themfor their fur and destroying the forests they live in.II. Pre-reading1.Defining wildlifeWhat does the world wildlife mean? The term wildlife refers to living organisms that are not in any way artificial or domesticated and which exist in natural habitats. Wildlife can refer to flora (plants) but more monly refers to fauna (animals). Needless to say, wildlife is a very general term for life in various ecosystems. Deserts, rainforests, plains, and other areas—including the most built-up urban sites—all have distinct forms of wildlife.Humankind has historically tended to separate civilization from wildlife in a number of ways; besides the obvious difference in vocabulary, there are differing expectations in the legal, social, and moral sense. This has been reason for debate throughout recorded history. Religions have often declared certain animals to be sacred, and in modern times concern for the environment has provoked activists to protest the exploitation of wildlife for human benefit or entertainment.2.Reading to the recordingNow turn to page 26, listening and reading to the recording of the text. Try to keep pace with the native reader, making your reading resemble that of the reader, in speed, in intonation and in pronunciation.3.Reading and transformingNow you are to read the text for information to fill in the form. What did Daisy see where she was?In Tibet in China Zimbabwe In thick rain forest4.Reading and underliningNext you are to read the text and underline all the collocations at the same time.III. Closing up by matching animals to five risk categoriesDifferent endangered species appear on different endangered species lists. And people who are trying to protecting animal use the following five risk categories to group the unlucky animal. Now in groups of four try to group all the unlucky animals found in China.。

Lastly, “protection” is the message zoo officials hope visitors will take away from the exhibition. “We're hoping people will come to ... and become educated,” Galloway said. “And take action to protect elephants.”
The old Elephant House at the National Zoo in Washington D.C. has been renovated (翻新) to include a lot more space for the giant animals to play, rest and even take a shower. It has been renamed the Elephant Community Center, and it also offers a lot more for human guests.
“The elephants are already enjoying throwing sand on one another,” said Galloway. People also have a lot more to do than in the old building, where they had few chances to learn about endangered species from Asia. There's a display featuring one of Kandula's old toys: a 750pound tire. Visitors can watch a video of him playing. There are several other handson activities, including a machine that compares elephant sounds and human voices. You also can make a promise to save the elephants.
“It's a great place for elephants to socialize,” said Marie Galloway, who is the elephant manager at the zoo. The community center is designed to hold as many as 10 elephants. Although the zoo plans to increase the herd (象群), there are now just three elephants: Ambika, Shanthi and Kandula. Galloway said each animal reacted (作出反应) differently to the new space. Shanthi, 38 years old, walked right in and explored everywhere. Ambika, 65, was very cautious (谨慎的) the first day, not sure if the new space was safe. And Kandula, Shanthi's 11yearold son, had a funny way of dealing with the unknown. “He backed his way in,” Galloway said with a laugh.
