2. Do you remember the name of your kindergarden teacher? I do, mine. Her name was Mrs. White. And I remember thinking she must be some older relation of Walt Disney’s Snow White, because she had the same bright blue eyes, short dark hair, red lips and fair skin.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look
at it and see there were so many mistakes. But no red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a “Good”! Writing in a careless and messy way would make my heart soar with happiness. But it worried my mother, so one day when she went in to meet Mrs. White for one of those parent-teacher meetings, she asked her why she didn’t red-pencil my wrong spellings of words or point out grammatical errors?
And my mother says Mrs. White said - The children are just beginning to get excited about using words, a bout forming sentences. I don’t want to kill that passion with red ink. Spelling and grammar can wait. The wonder of words won’t... And maybe she didn’t say it exactly like that. It was a long time ago. And what my mother gave me was the main idea of what she could remember. I added the rest. I grew up learning to use words with loving confidence like that.
It occurs to me that if Mrs. White had used her red pencil more precisely I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now. I look back now and think s he must have been a rather extraordinary teacher. And thanks to Mrs. White, I had no worries about writing what I meant even if I couldn’t quite spell it out.

Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem. Sharks, in particular, are “in” these days. Thanks to good public policy, killing sharks for fin soup is no longer cool.
The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks to die out, up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins. But we have started to reverse the trend, particularly in many areas of the United States and overseas where restaurants once proudly provided delicious shark fins on the menu.
In California, a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations. Overseas marketing and public efforts featuring posters on public transportation systems and TV ads have been underway for the past few years. These efforts all show signs of success, on both the supply side and the demand side of trade in shark fins.
Actually, stopping the killing of sharks is part of a broader movement to stop the killing of wild 019V UDITIS animals and the buying and selling of wildlife products. These products come from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos, besides killing marine life. Whether it is shark fin soup or ivory piano keys killing animals is big business. Thus, together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.

4. Encouraging children to think about the feelings of others improves their creativity, new research suggests.
The findings are from a year-long study with Design and Technology (D&T) year 9 students (aged 13 to 14) at two London schools. Students at one school spent the year following course-required lessons, while the other group’s D&T lessons used some thinking tools which are aimed at developing students’ ability to have empathy, whil e solving real-world problems.
Both groups of students were judged for creativity at both the start and end of the school year using a perfect test.
The results showed a significant increase in creativity among students who use the thinking tools. At the start of the year, the creativity scores of the students who followed the required curriculum, were 11% higher than those following D&T lessons. By the end, however, the situation had completely changed: creativity scores among the D&T group were 78% higher than the required-course group.
The researchers also examined specific types within the test: such as “emotional expressiveness” and “open-mindedness”. Students from the D&T group again scored much higher in these types, showing that obvious progress in empathy was improving the overall creativity scores.
Nicholl, Senior Lecturer in D&T Education, said: “When I taught Design and Technology, I didn’t see children as someone who would one day do good to society; they were people who needed to be ready to go into the world at 18. Teaching children to understand another person’s feelings and experiences is about building a society where we appreciate each other’s point of view. Surely that is something we want education to do.”

When I got home from school I told my mom the story. She said that it was good that I had tried to help but I should stop worrying about it because there was nothing more
