Journal of Literature and Art Studies, July 2023, Vol. 13, No. 7, 492-498doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2023.07.003An Analysis of the Phenomenon of Creative Treason inGoldblatt’s Translation of FrogTANG Zhi-yuCollege of Literature and Journalism, Sichuan University, Chengdu, ChinaLiterary transl ation should not solely focus on “what to translate”, but also on “how to translate”, exte nding theperspective to the target audience and environment. It is crucial to recognize that translation involves more thanrendering words; it entails navigating cultural differences and facilitating literary communication during theprocess of language conversion. By comparing and contrasting Mo Yan’s work of “蛙” with Howard Goldblatt’sEnglish translation Frog from both the two aspects of language and culture and the four perspectives of alienationand naturalization, deletion and addition, processing of address and dialogues, symbols of animal cultural, thisstudy explores the phenomenon of creative treason in literary translation, and provides a specific and in-depthanalysis to offer valuable insights for the translation of Chinese literature. Keywords: creative treason, Frog, translation, cultural differencesLiterary translation is not only to convert one text into another, but also to make an accurate grasp of the cultural characteristics and ideological connotations of the original text, and make appropriate changes on the basis of faithfulness to the original text. The success of literary translation should not only focus on “what to translate”, but also on “how to translate”, expand the perspective to the receiving group and the receiving environment, and realize that the translation of words is only an appearance, but the essence is the cultural difference and literary exchange in the process of language conversion. It can be said that the translator gives a second life to the literary work, which profoundly affects the popularity of the work abroad. The English translation of The Frogs helped author Mo Yan take the Nobel Prize for Literature in one go, which is undoubtedly a great success, and its dissemination and acceptance overseas cannot be separated from the translator Howard Goldblatt’s second creation. This paper compares Mo Yan’s work Frogs and Goldblatt’s English translation, and specifically explains and analyzes the phenomenon of creative rebellion, so as to provide a reference for the translation of Chinese literature.Introduction to FrogFrog is a full-length magical realism novel written by contemporary Chinese author Mo Yan, first published in 2009. Spanning the 1950s to the beginning of the 21st century, the story is set against the backdrop of the ups and downs of rural fertility in New China over the past 60 years, and uses the experience of Wan Xin,TANG Zhi-yu, Bachelor’s degree, College of Literature and Journalism, Sichuan University.a female doctor’s aunt, who has been practicing obstetrics and gynecology for more than 50 years, to paint a picture of the arduous and complex implementation of family planning policies, revealing sensitive social issues while portraying a group of characters of different shapes and sizes. The novel was awarded the 8th Mao Dun Literary Award in 2011. Subsequently, in 2012, Mo Yan achieved a historic milestone as the first Chinese author to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature because of Frog. The English version of Frog was skillfully translated by renowned American sinologist and translator, Howard Goldblatt. Initially published in Australia in 2014, it later made its way to the UK and the US in 2015. Its publication coincided with its inclusion in the Washington Post’s prestigious “2015 Novels to Watch” list. This successful publication and distribution of the English translation significantly amplified the global appeal and popularity of Frog.Analysis of Creative Treason in the English Translation of Frog Creative treason was first proposed by French literary sociologist Robert Escarpit, who who explains in his book Sociology of Literature that “it is always an act of creative treason, but it is still treason because it puts the work into a system of references (linguistic, in this example) for which it was not originally conceived-creative, because it gives new reality to the work in providing it with the possibility of a new literary interchange with a larger public and because it assures not only mere survival but a second existence” (Escarpit, 1971, p. 85). From this perspective, creative treason in translation involves more than superficial changes to the language’s form; it also allows the translator to make decisions on whether to creatively adapt the text based on the cultural characteristics and ideological connotations of the target country, while remaining faithful to the original ideas and expressions.Howard Goldblatt, the English translator of Frog, possesses a nuanced understanding of Chinese culture, owing to his prior study experience in China. During the process of translating Mo Yan’s work, Goldblatt adeptly navigated the differences in cultural concepts, historical development, and ideological connotations between China and the United States. His flexible approach to translation garnered the approval and support of the original author, Mo Yan. The translation exhibits a noticeable creative treason, primarily evident in two levels: linguistic and cultural adaptations, including alienation and naturalization, deletion and addition, processing of address and dialogues, symbols of animal cultural. This scholarly and culturally sensitive translation not only showcases Goldblatt’s expertise but also contributes to an enriched cross-cultural literary exchange, further enhancing the global appreciation and recognition of Mo Yan’s masterpiece Frog.Creative Treason at the Level of LanguageAlienation and NaturalizationAlienation and naturalization, initially introduced by American translator Lawrence Venuti, are key characteristics of personalized translation. “Alienation” entails the translator adhering closely to the author’s expressions in the source language to convey the original content effectively. These two concepts are essentially opposite yet complementary. On the other hand, “naturalization”involves adopting expressions familiar to the target language readers to effectively convey the original content.(ST)

Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once.A team of researchers led by Priyanka Joshi examined the degree to which men and women relied on “communicative abstraction” to verbally convey their ideas and emotions. Communicative abstraction, according to the researchers, reflects the tendency of people to use “abstract speech that focuses on the broader picture and____26____purpose of action rather than concrete speech focusing on details and the meansof____27____action.” Interestingly, they found that men were far more likely to speak in the abstract than were women. To arrive at this____28____, the researchers examined the linguistic (语言的) patterns of men and women in over 600,000 blog posts written on websites. To do this, the researchers computed abstractness ratings for____29____40,000 commonly used words in the English language. Words considered to be concrete could be easily visualized, such as “table”or “chair”. Words that were more____30____to visualize, for example, “justice” or “morality” were considered to be more abstract. They found that men used____31____more abstract language in their blog posts. What is the____32____of this effect? The researchers suggest that power differences between the genders— that is, men having more power in society—might be a key determinant(决定因素). For instance, in a follow-up study conducted with a sample of 300 students, the researchers____33____power dynamics in an interpersonal setting to see if this would influence communicative abstraction. They found that participants in a high-power interviewer role were more likely to give abstract descriptions of behaviors than were participants in a low-power interviewee role. This suggests that communicating more abstractly does not reflect a____34____tendency of men or women butrather____35____within specific contexts.A) approximatelyB) attainingC) conclusionD) difficultE) emergesF) fixedG) ignoredH) legallyI) manipulatedJ) recommendedK) refrainingL) signalsM) significantlyN) sourceO) ultimateSection BDirections: In this section, you are going to read a passage with ten statements attached to it.Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.How to better work towards long-term goalsA) Hal Hershfield, a psychologist at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, wanted to know why people weren’t saving for retirement. Across the board, people are living longer. Logically, they’ll need more money to live comfortably in their post-work years. And yet, savings rates in the U.S. have gone down in recent decades, not up.B) To help explain this seemingly irrational behavior, Hershfield and his team scanned the brains of study participants while asking them to what degree various traits (特征)—like “honorable” or “funny”—applied to their current self, their future self, a current other, or a futureother. As participants answered, Hershfield’s team recorded which parts of their brains lit up. Unsurprisingly, people’s brains were most active when thinking about their current selves and least active when thinking about a current other. But the team found that participants’ brain activity while considering their future selves more closely resembled their brain activity while thinking about a current other rather than the current self.C) Put in practical terms, when thinking of yourself in a month or a year or a decade, your brain registers that person in ways similar to how it would register Taylor Swift or the mailman. Understood in that way, saving for retirement is the equivalent of giving money away to someone else entirely.D) In light of Hershfield’s study, one simple question arises: Is it possible to make our present selves give a damn about our future selves? The answers are anything but simple.E) Seen through the lens of the present self versus the future self, our self-defeating actions—like choosing to watch television rather than go to the gym—suddenly make perfect sense. We get to enjoy the very concrete, immediate benefits of our actions while someone else (namely, our future selves) suffers the hypothetical(假设的), far-off consequences. As a result, the decisions we make for our present selves often look very different from our decisions for our future selves. We believe that tomorrow will be different. We believe that we will be different tomorrow; but in doing so, we prioritize our current mood over the consequences of our inaction for the future self.F) Understanding our procrastination (拖延) through the lens of the present and future selves, we’re left with three possible solutions: The first is to force your future self to do whatever your present self doesn’t want to do. The second is to convince your present self that your future self is, in fact, still you. If the central problem is that we think of our future selves as other people, it follows that trying to identify more closely with our future selves will encourage us to make better long-term decisions.G) In a follow-up study, Hershfield wanted to explore ways to bridge the disconnect between the present and future selves and encourage people to save more for retirement. He and his team took photos of study participants, and then used image processing to visually age their faces. Participants were then placed in a virtual reality setting where they could look into a mirror and see their aged selves looking back at them. Participants who saw their aged selves said they would save 30% more of their salary for retirement than the control group.H) Whatever your long-term goals may be—getting in better shape, launching your own business, writing a book—thinking about your deadline in terms of days rather than months or years can help you wrap your mindaround how close the future really is.I) The third solution is to forget about your future self and use your present self’s love of instant gratification (满足感) to your advantage. While the two tactics (手段) above can be effective in making better long-term choices, in the end, you’re still struggling against human nature. Our brains are hard-wired for instant gratification. Instead of fighting your present self’s need for immediate rewards, why not use it to your advantage? When most of us set goals, we focus on long-term results we want to see—e.g., losing weight, getting a promotion, retiring in comfort, etc. While those visions of our future selves can be inspiring, when it comes to actually doing the day-to-day work, it may be more effective to reframe activities in terms of their immediate, or at least very near-term, rewards.J) Take writing this article, for instance. It’s easy for me to imagine how amazing it will feel at the end of the workday to have this article done. This isn’t just my opinion. Research partners Kaitlin Woolley of Cornell University and Ayelet Fishbach of the University of Chicago have made a career out of studying the differences between the goals that people achieve and the ones that fall to the wayside.K) “In one study, we asked people online about the goals they set at the beginning of the year. Most people set goals to achieve delayed, long-term benefits, such as career advancement, debt repayment, or improved health. We asked these individuals how enjoyable it was to pursue their goal, as well as how important their goal was. We also asked whether they were still working on their goals two months after setting them. We found that enjoyment predicted people’s goal persistence two months after setting the goal far more than how important they rated their goal to be,” Woolley said.L) This pattern held true across a wide variety of goals from exercising to studying to eating healthier foods. For example, people ate 50% more of a healthy food when directed to focus on the good taste rather than the long-term health benefits. Other studies have shown a greater uptake of exercise in people who were told to think of the enjoyment of doing the exercise now rather than future health gains.M) These findings suggest that when it comes to achieving your goals, enjoying the process itself is more important than wanting the long-term benefits. In other words, present self trumps (战胜) future self. Who says instant gratification has to be a bad thing? By all means, set ambitious long-term goals for your future self, but when it comes to actually following through day-to-day, make sure your present self knows what’s in it for her too.36. Our brains are genetically determined to satisfy immediate desires.37. Taken in a practical way, saving for post-work years is like givingmoney away to others.38. Research found that, as regards achievement of one’s goals, it is important to focus more on enjoying the process than the long-term benefits.39. Regarding our future selves as still being ourselves will help us make better long-term decisions.40. Savings rates in America have dropped in recent decades even though people’s life expectancy has increased.41. Researchers found that enjoyment rather than importance enabled people to persist in their goals.42. When making decisions, we give priority to our current frame of mind without thinking much of the consequences.43. People ate more of a healthy food when they focused on its good taste instead of its longterm benefits.44. As was expected, when people thought of their present selves, their brains were observed to become more active.45. Researchers found that participants who saw the images of their aged selves would save more for their later years than those who didn’t.Section CDirections:There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage.People often wonder why some entrepreneurs have greater success than others. Is it habits, connections, luck, work ethic or any other behavior?I believe the key to success is willpower. Willpower is the ability to control yourself. It is a strong determination that allows you to do something difficult. It is a behavior we are born with more than one we learn; however, it is possible to not only learn it, but also strengthen it with constant exercise.Willpower is just like a muscle; to keep it strong you need to constantly exercise it. People with a great amount of willpower have the discipline to develop positive, successful habits. Even with an incredible amount of talent, without the discipline and motivation to create positive habits, it can be difficult to achieve success.Willpower and habits go hand in hand. It is critical to create good habits and take the actions necessary to stick to those habits day in and day out for greater success. Almost half of our daily actions are part of our habits and not decisions, so once the correct habits are in place, you will automatically perform those tasks on a day-today basis. The best way to create and stick to a habit is to have strong motivation. It’s easier to change your habits to lose weight if you have a health issue and you want to be around longer for your kids, or if your business is something you’re passionate about. Having a valuable outcome associated with a habit will help you stick to that habit permanently. The art of self-control is one that most successful individuals have mastered. Self-control enables you to avoid behaviors that don’t contribute to your success and adopt those that do.Because there is a delayed satisfaction associated with self-control, it can be easy to get off track. However, if you work on sticking to those small positive habits one day at a time, it becomes easier to stay strong and achieve that delayed reward. Once a reward is achieved, it is much easier to continue sticking to your habits.46. What does the author say we need to do to strengthen our willpower?A) Keep it under control.B) Apply it continuously.C) Learn from entrepreneurs.D) Aim at success determinedly.47. How are almost half of our daily actions performed according to the passage?A) Out of habit.B) With determination.C) Like muscle building.D) By self-discipline.48. What will help people stick to doing something constructive automatically?A) Practising it on a day-to-day basis.B) Associating it with improving health.C) Possessing a reasonable amount of talent.D) Foreseeing the desired outcome it will yield.49. How does the art of self-control help us succeed?A) By allowing us to remain clear-headed permanently.B) By enabling us to alter our behaviors constantly.C) By enabling us to take positive actions.D) By allowing us to avoid taking risks.50. Why can it be difficult for us to maintain self-control?A) Most of us are not in the habit of exercising self-control.B) We may not get immediate rewards from self-control.C) Self-control tends to be associated with pains.D) Self-control only brings about small benefits.Passage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage.Today, most scientific research is funded by government grants, companies doing research and development, and non-profit foundations. As a society, we reap the rewards from this science, but we also help pay for it. You indirectly support science through taxes you pay, products and services you purchase, and donations you make.Funding for science has changed with the times. Historically, science has been largely supported through private patronage (资助), church sponsorship, or simply paying for the research yourself. Today, researchers are likely to be funded by a mix of grants from various government agencies, institutions, and foundations. Other research is funded by private companies. Such corporate sponsorship is widespread in some fields. Almost 75% of U.S. clinical trials in medicine are paid for by private companies. And, of course, some researchers today still fund small-scale studies out of their own pockets. Most of us can’t afford to do nuclear research as a private hobby, but birdwatchers, rock collectors, and others can do real research on a limited budget. In a perfect world, money wouldn’t matter—all scientific studies would be completely objective. But in the real world, funding may introduce biases. Drug research sponsored by the pharmaceutical (制药的) industry is more likely to end up favoring the drug under consideration than studies sponsored by government grants or charitable organizations. Similarly, nutrition research sponsored by the food industry is more likely to end up favoring the food under consideration than independently funded research. So what should we make of all this? Should we ignore any research funded by companies or special interest groups? Certainly not. These groups provide invaluable funding for scientific research. Furthermore, science has many safeguards in place to catch instances of bias that affect research outcomes. Ultimately, misleading results will be corrected as science proceeds; however, this process takes time. Meanwhile, it pays to examine studies funded by industry or special interest groups with extra care. Are the results consistent with other independently funded studies? What do other scientists have to say about this research? A little examination can go a long way towards identifying bias associated with the funding source.51. What does the passage mainly discuss regarding scientific research?A) Its foundation.B) Its rewards.C) Its prospect.D) Its funding.52. What do we learn from the passage about researchers like birdwatchers and rock collectors?A) They have little access to government funding.B) They can do research with limited resources.C) They can do amateur work in their own fields.D) They have no means for large-scale research.53. What would scientific studies look like in a perfect world according to the author?A) They would be totally unbiased.B) They would be independently funded.C) They would be responsibly conducted.D) They would be strictly supervised.54. What does the author say about companies and special interest groups?A) They try hard to pull down the safeguards for research.B) They make extra efforts to research their own products.C) They provide valuable resources for scientific research.D) They reap the most benefits from scientific research.55. What does the author think of research funded by industry or special interest groups?A) Its recommendations should be examined for feasibility.B) Its misleading results should be corrected in time.C) Its validity should be checked with additional care.D) Its hidden biases should be identified independently.Part Ⅳ Translation (30 minutes)Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English. You should write your answer on Answer Sheet 2.农历(the lunar calendar)起源于数千年前的中国,根据太阳和月亮的运行规律制定。

Regardless of the changing top quality of ChatGPT’s health and fitness tips, some men and women have essentially been its followers in the gym.John Yu, a TikTok content creator based mostly in the US, filmed himself sticking to a six-day fitness program of ChatGPT. He instructed it to give him a sample workout every day, tailored to which bit of his system he preferred to work (his arms, legs, and many others), and then followed the workout plan. While the exercise routines it came up with were being properly good, Yu claimed, “Strictly pursuing what ChatGPT provides me is a thing I’m not definitely fascinated in.”Lee Lem, a bodybuilding articles creator dependent in Australia, requested ChatGPT to develop a “first-rank leg day” plan. It recommended the appropriate kinds of exercises — squats(蹲姿), lunges, deadlifts, and so on — but the rest periods between them were much as well short. “It’s tricky!” Lem states. “It’s quite unrealistic to only rest 30 seconds between squat sets.”Lem hit on the core trouble with ChatGPT’s ideas: they fall short to consider human bodies. As Lem and Yu uncovered out, repetitive movements rapidly made peo-ple bored or weary. However, human coaches know how to blend their tips up. ChatGPT has to be specifically explained to.What everyone has in common was their choice to address ChatGPT’s education tips as entertaining ex-periments rather than significant athletic guidance. They all experienced a good knowledge of physical fitness. They all knew it is essential to address its responses skeptically. This doesn’t necessarily mean AI versions just can-not perform a position in acquiring fitness designs. But it does stress that they can’t be totally dependable. ChatGPT will improve and perfect its function of inquiring. For example, it may possibly ask users if there are any rou-tines they dislike. toward a science of translating = 翻译科学探索

toward a science of translating = 翻译科学探索Toward a Science of TranslatingTranslation is an important part of communication between people of different languages. It is a complex process that requires a deep understanding of both the source language and the target language. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the need for accurate and reliable translation services is growing. In order to meet this need, it is important to develop a science of translating. The first step in developing a science of translating is to understand the different types of translation. There are two main types of translation: literal translation and interpretive translation. Literal translation is a direct translation of the source language into the target language, while interpretive translation is a more creative approach that takes into account the cultural context of the source language. The second step is to understand the different methods of translation. There are two main methods of translation: machine translation and human translation. Machine translation is a process in which a computer program is used to translate text from one language to another. Human translation is a process in which a human translator is used to translate text from one language to another. The third step is to understand the different techniques used in translation. There are several techniques used in translation, including literal translation, interpretive translation, and cultural adaptation. Literal translation is a direct translation of the source language into the target language. Interpretive translation is a more creative approach that takes into account the cultural context of the source language. Cultural adaptation is a process in which the translator adapts the source language to the target language in order to make it more understandable to the target audience. The fourth step is to understand the different tools used in translation. There are several tools used in translation, including dictionaries, translation software, and machine translation. Dictionaries are used to look up words and phrases in the source language and their equivalentsin the target language. Translation software is used to automate the process of translating text from one language to another. Machine translation is a process in which a computer program is used to translate text from one language to another. The fifth step is to understand the different approaches used in translation. There are several approaches used in translation, including literal translation, interpretive translation, and cultural adaptation. Literal translation is a direct translation of the source language into the target language. Interpretive translation is a more creative approach that takes into account the cultural context of the source language. Cultural adaptation is a process in which the translator adapts the source language to the target language in order to make it more understandable to the target audience. The sixth step is to understand the different theories used in translation. There are several theories used in translation, including the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, the source-oriented approach, and the target-oriented approach. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis states that language shapes thought and that translation is a process of transferring meaning from one language to another. The source-oriented approach is a process in which the translator focuses on the source language and attempts to accurately translate it into the target language. The target-oriented approach is a process in which the translator focuses on the target language and attempts to accurately translate it into the source language. The seventh step is to understand the different technologies used in translation. There are several technologies used in translation, including machine translation, natural language processing, and computer-assisted translation. Machine translation is a process in which a computer program is used to translate text from one language to another. Natural language processing is a process in which a computer program is used to analyze and understand natural language. Computer-assisted translation is a process in which a computer program is used to assist the translator in the translation process.By understanding the different types, methods, techniques, tools, approaches, theories, and technologies used in translation, we can begin to develop a science of translating. This science will help us to better understand the complexities of translation and to develop more accurate and reliable translation services.。

A neuroscientist reveals how to think differently翻译

A neuroscientist reveals how to think differently一位神经学家揭示了如何用不同的方式思考In the last decade a revolution has occurred in the way that scientists think about the brain. We now know that the decisions humans make can be traced to the firing patterns of neuronsin specific parts of the brain. These discoveries have led to the field known as macroeconomics, which studies the brain's secrets to success in an economic environment that demands innovation and being able to do things differently from competitors. A brain that can do this is an iconoclastic one. Briefly, an iconoclast is a person who does something that others say can't be done.在过去的十年里,科学家们对大脑的思考方式发生了一场革命。

我们现在知道,人类所做的决定可以追溯到大脑神经系统蛋白特定部位的激发模式。

这些发现导致了一个被称为神经科学的领域,这个领域研究了大脑在一个需要创新的经济环境中成功的秘密,并且能够以不同于竞争对手的方式做事。

能做到这一点的大脑是典型的。

简而言之,偶像崇拜者就是做别人说不能做的事的人。

A Tentative Study of Different Translated Versions of Pride andPrejudice from the Perspective of Po[Abstract] Polysystem theory may explain some cases of literary translation. The article firstly gives a brief introduction to polysystem. Then writer attempts to study polysystem from its application to different translated versions of Pride and Prejudice.[Key words] polysystem theorytranslated literaturetranslated strategiesⅠ. Introduction to Polysystem TheoryPolysystem Theory is put forward by Israeli famous scholar Itamar Even-Zohar in the early 1970s. The theory is often used to guide the study of literature and translation. Polysystem Theory refers to the conglomerate of many literary systems, including the canonized literature form like poem and non-canonized literature form like children literature and popular literature as well. Zohar assumed that translated literature occupies the primary position and also the secondary position in the literary history. When translated literature stands on the primary position in a particular literary polysystem, there is no obscure boundary between translated works and original ones. What’s more, when a new literary model enters this particular polysystem, translation becomes a way of coining new words and introducing new expressions.Even-Zohar concluded three social circumstances in which translation would occupy the primary position: (1) when a literature is “young” or in the proc ess of being established; (2) when a literature is “peripheral” or “weak” or both; and (3) when a literature is experiencing a “crisis” or turning point(Even-Zohar,1978a:24; quoted by Gentzler, 2004:116). Except in these three circumstances, translation is thought to be secondary and is always relegated to a marginal position in the dynamic literary system. In such a situation, translators will often (but not necessarily always) adopt already established forms in the target culture to produce their works. As a result, the translated literature tends to adhere to the norms that the “higher” literature has already rejected. In spite of its marginal position, translations produced in this way may bring new ideas into the target culture without breaking the traditional forms of the target culture.Zohar holds the idea that the literary position of a nation decides the position of translated literature in a particular literary polysystem and different literary positions of translated works influence translation strategy to a great extent. According to the theory, if the main culture of a nation is on the primary position, translated literature is then on the secondary position. In this case, translators tend to adopt domestication as translation strategy. On the contrary, if the national culture occupies the secondaryposition, translated literature is on the main position. In such circumstances, foreignization is often the translation method. In other words, translation strategy adopted by translators has a lot with the national cultural position in the whole polysystem. When the position of the national culture changes, the balance in the polysystem will be broken. Therefore, translators will choose translation strategy again.Ⅱ. Different Versions of Pride and Prejudice and Their Translation StrategiesThere are many translated versions of Pride and Prejudice till now across the country. The author chooses Wang Keyi’s version in 1950s and Sun Zhili’s version in 1980s to explore the feasibility of polysystem theory. On the whole, the languages of the two versions are both clear and fluent and they have different characteristics of different times. The position of Chinese culture is different at different historical periods, and the different translation strategy adopted in different times can be explained according to polysystem theory to a large degree.According to the theory, if the main culture of a nation is on the primary position, translated literature is then on the secondary position. In this case, translators tend to adopt domestication as translation strategy. On the contrary, if the national culture occupies the secondary position, translated literature is on the main position. In such circumstances, foreignization is often the translation method. Wang Keyi’s version came into being in 1950s, when the new People’s Republic of China was just established. At that time, people all across the country were very proud of the victory. This atmosphere was filled with all aspects of their life, including the literary circle. Therefore, literary status in this period was in the main status. It is not strange for Wang Keyi to adopt the domestication as his translation strategy. Sun Zhili’s version came out in 1980s, when China got rid of the disaster of Cultural Revolution and got on the path to reform. Translators hope to take in the essence of foreign works and render faithful versions to reflect the original style to make up the vacant situation in the terms of injecting the foreign works. Therefore, literary translation turns out to be the primary situation. It is a natural result that Sun Zhili chooses foreignization as his translation strategy. In a word, polysystem theory can explain the translation phenomena to some extent.Let’s have a look at the following examples:例1:“If you mean Darcy, ”cried her brother,“he may go to bed , if he choose , before it begins-but as for the ball, it is quite a settled thing; and as soon as Nicholls has made white soup enough I shall send round my cards.”王科一:“如果你指的是达西,”她的哥哥大声说,“那么,他可以在跳舞开始以前就上床睡觉,随他的便好啦。
