The Internet is far more convenient and efficient than the written word or other conventional means of conveying meaning.Advertisements can bring convenience topeople’s lives.Modern means of transportation make it very convenient for people to travel far or near, thus saving a lot of time and energy.2)效率:efficient,efficiently,efficiency相关话题:计算机和高科技(high-tech devices)减轻了体力劳动(manual labor),解放了人类(liberate humans),让人们有更多的时间从事其他的事情(more time are spent on other necessary matters)等,例如:Advertisements build an efficient and direct link between manufacturers and customers.Modern science and technology make our lives more efficient. A phone call,an e-mail or a fax can all bring people closer and make the world smaller.3)节省和浪费:save time, save money, save space, economical, frugal, frugality; thrift, thrifty waste timemoneyspace,costly,time-consuming,lavish,例如:This will help them realize that it is not easy to make money and form the good habit of frugality. There are many other ways for people to knowcommodities,so it is a waste to invest large sums of money in making advertisements on TV.As for the young and middle-aged,they should make better use of their prime years instead of spending so much time raising pets. It’s a costly and time-consuming hobby. China is a developing country and many people are still below the poverty line. Some children of the right age inpoverty-stricken areas can’t afford to go to school.… will be great extravagance of time, energy and money.。

What are your opinions about the advantages and disadvantages of fast food?

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic Social Practice. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese:1. Social PracticeSocial practice is a bridge between their theory and reality. So, in recent years, more and more college students choose to take part-time jobs in or outside school. In the social practice, students are sure to learn more than their textbooks. Their participation in social practice might strengthen their sense of social responsibility. Their close contact with the working people might help them to apply their knowledge to the solution to the practical problem. But many teachers complain that there are fewer and fewer students who pay attention to their study. In my view, it’s an undenied fact that students break the balance between their jobs and studies, especially when they fall into conflict. But I think students should spend their spare time taking part-time jobs. Timely participation in social practice will benefit them all through their life.1. How to Keep Psychologically Healthy? One in four people will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year. When you fail to manage these problems, they are likely to cause various mental illnesses. The causes of mental health problems often vary a lot from one case to another. In today’s society, a good number of people are suffering from heavy pressure. Others lack communication skills. In addition, a lot of people are ignorant of psychological knowledge about how to keep mentally fit. There are a lot of ways to curb mental health problems and keep psychologically healthy. Firstly, find the real cause of your mental health problem and see whether you can do something to make a change. Secondly, learn to relax yourself and take exercise to release the pressure. Lastly, you may find it helpful to talk to your partner or friend about your problem, or seek support and advice from a psychological consultant.1. Aid Education in ChinaThere has been a hot topic recently about college students’ being encouraged to help children in the poor and remote areas.Generally aid-education is helpful in two aspects. First of all, it can broaden volunteers’ horizons in poverty-stricken regions. For instance, it is a golden opportunity for volunteers to experience a completely different life. In addition, college students have to adapt themselves to the harsh living conditions, meanwhile they can make friends with the children. In my view, the future of China’s education depends on the joint efforts of the society, the government and all the citizens. To sum up, we college students should take the initiative in response to the appeal for supplying help to children in poor regions.Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic On a Harmonious Dormitory Life. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given below in Chinese:1. On a Harmonious Dormitory LifeDormitory life is an indispensable part of college life. But sometimes the harmony in the dormitory will be disturbed in one way or another. As is known to all, a harmonious dormitory life is important to college students and benefits all the members. On the one hand, we can have a good rest and put our heart into study. On the other hand, we will have a good mood and enjoy being together. There are several ways to create and maintain a harmonious dormitory life. Firstly, you have to evaluate your life style and try to get rid of your dirty habits, if there are any. Secondly, when an annoying situation arises, you’ll just have to learn to tolerate each other and co-exist. Thirdly, you’ll have to share with each other and make good friends. In conclusion, we should try our best to build a harmonious dormitory life for the sake of good study and good life.1. Silence Is Not Always Gold“Silence is gold” is a popular saying in which many people have belief. To these people speaking too much is not a merit. However, if you always keep silent, you will probably miss many golden opportunities instead of obtaining the gold of silence.Last week I read an article written by an office lady. The company where she worked had two kinds of offices: cubicle office and window office. As a new employee she worked in a cubicle office together with twenty colleagues. Two years later she still worked there but some colleagues who came later than her had moved into the window office. She felt confused. One day one colleague told her that window office wasn’t obtained without request. But believing that she certainly gained one if she did a good job the woman had never asked for it.From the woman’s experience we learn that silence is not always gold. In the modern society one needs to speak his mind and speak for his own interests.1. Trying to Renew KnowledgeToday’s society is of knowledge economy age, in which new knowledge emerges much faster than ever before. Moreover, knowledge plays an important part in the whole economy. Therefore, everyone finds it necessary to renew his (or her) knowledge, otherwise he (or her) will be left behind the society. There are some ways to update knowledge. On the one hand, one can attend different courses at all types of schools, either part-time or full-time. On the other hand, self-study is, in a sense, a more convenient and practical method by which one can effectively renew his (or her) knowledge. In my view, I have primarily depended on self-taught method in the recent years. Although I am busy doing daily work, I still insist on teaching myself at night. In this way, I can not only keep up with the swift development of society but also apply new knowledge to my practical work, which benefits me a lot.1. Western Fast FoodFast food is becoming more and more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers. Today, nothing is more representative of the fast pace of modern society than fast food. There are several reasons for its popularity. For one thing, it is fast and convenient. Go into a fast food restaurant, and your food will be ready in a minute. Precious time won’t be wasted in waiting-in-line to order or waiting at your table for your food to arrive. For another, its popularity is also attributed to the clean food, the excellent service and the comfortable environment of the fast food restaurants, and American style. However, I think that fast food isn’t healthy enough because it doesn’t compose a balanced diet and is low in nutrition. Fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and we should turn to it only once in a while.1. Long HolidaysGenerally speaking, long holidays are good for us college students. On the one hand, we have a lot of time to study by ourselves and thus improve weaknesses and further develop strengths. On the other hand, we can take part-time jobs, which can make us realize responsibility and make ourselves better prepared for social life. But every coin has two sides. Some students fail to make good use of their time and they are addicted to various computer games. I am afraid that they are likely to ruin themselves in this way.As far as I am concerned, I will try to make the best use of my precious time.I will spend most of my holidays studying English for that I am very poor at it. In addition, I will take a part-time job as private teacher. By this means, I can earn some money and put my knowledge into practice as well.。

As for the reasons of excessively packaging, there are many factors contributing to it.It is conceivable that the excessive packaging has mainly arisen from the two following factors. For one thing, people in mounting numbers are inclined to send a variety of gifts to their relatives and friends, especially during the holidays, and decorated gifts sometimes are a symbol of good taste. For another, the dealers are in the purpose of making more money by packaging the products to the largest extent.Taking all the above-mentioned factors into consideration, it is quite urgent for us to takeeffective measures to cope with it. We consumers should basically concentrate more on the quality of the commodities rather than the packages; meanwhile, the government should also put restrictions on the excessive packaging. Only in this way can we guarantee the harmonious development of the market as well as ourselves.

For questions 8-10,complete the sentences with theinformation given in the passage.Small Schools RisingThis year's list of the top 100 high schools shows that today, those with fewer students are flourishing.Fifty years ago, they were the latest thing in educational reform: big, modern, suburban high schools with students counted in the thousands. As baby boomers(二战后婴儿潮时期出生的人) came of high-school age, big schools promised economic efficiency. A greater choice of courses, and, of course, better football teams. Only years later did we understand the trade-offs this involved: the creation of excessive bureaucracies(官僚机构),the difficulty of forging personal connections between teachers and students.SAT scores began dropping in 1963;today,on average,30% of students do not complete high school in four years, a figure that rises to 50% in poor urban neighborhoods. While the emphasis on teaching to higher, test-driven standards as set in No Child Left Behind resulted in significantly better performance in elementary(and some middle)schools, high schools for a variety of reasons seemed to have made little progress.Size isn't everything, but it does matter, and the past decade has seen a noticeable countertrend toward smaller schools. This has been due ,in part ,to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has invested $1.8 billion in American high schools, helping to open about 1,000 small schools-most of them with about 400 kids each with an average enrollment of only 150 per grade, About 500 more are on the drawing board. Districts all over the country are taking notice, along with mayors in cities like New York, Chicago and San Diego. The movement includes independent public charter schools, such as No.1 BASIS in Tucson, with only 120 high-schoolers and 18 graduates this year. It embraces district-sanctioned magnet schools, such as the Talented and Gifted School, with 198 students, and the Science and Engineering Magnet,with383,which share a building in Dallas, as well as the City Honors School in Buffalo, N.Y., which grew out of volunteer evening seminars for students. And it includes alternative schools with students selected by lottery(抽签),such as H-B Woodlawn in Arlington, Va. And most noticeable of all, there is the phenomenon of large urban and suburban high schools that have split up into smaller units of a few hundred, generally housed in the same grounds that once boasted thousands of students all marching to the same band.Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, Calif, is one of those, ranking No.423-among the top 2% in the country-on Newsweek's annual ranking of America's top high schools. The success of small schoolsis apparent in the listings. Ten years ago, when the first Newsweek list based on college-level test participation was published, only three of the top 100 schools had graduating Classes smaller than 100 students. This year there are 22. Nearly 250 schools on the full ,Newsweek list of the top 5% of schools nationally had fewer than 200 graduates in 2007.Although many of Hillsdale's students came from wealthy households, by the late 1990 average test scores were sliding and it had earned the unaffectionate nickname (绰号) "Hillsjail. " Jeff Gilbert. A Hillsdale teacher who became principal last year, remembers sitting with other teachers watching students file out of a graduation ceremony and asking one another in astonishment, "How did that student graduate?"So in 2003 Hillsdale remade itself into three "houses," romantically named Florence, Marrakech and Kyoto. Each of the 300 arriving ninth graders are randomly(随机地) assigned to one of the houses. Where they will keep the same four core subject teachers for two years, before moving on to another for 11th and 12th grades. The closeness this system cultivates is reinforced by the institution of "advisory" classes Teachers meet with students in groups of 25, five mornings a week, for open-ended discussions of everything from homework problems to bad Saturday-night dates. The advisers also meet with students privately and stay in touch with parents, so they are deeply invested in the students' success."We're constantly talking about one another's advisers," says English teacher Chris Crockett. "If you hear that yours isn't doing well in math, or see them sitting outside the dean's office, it's like a personal failure." Along with the new structure came a more demanding academic program, the percentage of freshmen taking biology jumped from 17 to 95."It was rough for some. But by senior year, two-thirds have moved up to physics," says Gilbert "Our kids are coming to school in part because they know there are adults here who know them and care for them."But not all schools show advances after downsizing, and it remains to be seen whether smaller schools will be a cure-all solution. The Newsweek list of top U.S. high schools was made this year, as in years past, according to a single metric, the proportion of students taking college-level exams. Over the years this system has come in for its share of criticism for its simplicity. But that is also its strength: it's easy for readers to understand, and to do the arithmetic for their own schools if they'd like.Ranking schools is always controversial, and this year a group of 38 superintendents(地区教育主管)from five states wrote to ask that their schools be excluded from the calculation."It is impossible to know which high schools are 'the best' in the nation, "their letter read. in part. "Determining whether different schools do or don't offer a high quality of education requires a look at man different measures, including students' overall academic accomplishments and their subsequent performance in college. And taking into consideration the unique needs of their communities."In the end, the superintendents agreed to provide the data we sought, which is, after all, public information. There is, in our view, no real dispute here, we are all seeking the same thing, which is schools that better serve our children and our nation by encouraging students to tackle tough subjects under the guidance of gifted teachers. And if we keep working toward that goal, someday, perhaps a list won't be necessary. 1.Fifty years ago. big. Modern. Some people, especially the younger generation, challenge the value of conventional libraries. When they need any information in their studies or work, they can turn to their computers for help. For this reason, they do not need to go to a library for borrowing or returning one or two books. While others, including most old people as well as scholars, value libraries. They love libraries because they can enjoy peace and quietness in an isolated spiritual world. And they can also have access to rare academic works needed for their studies in the libraries. In my view, conventional libraries are still available though there is still much room for improving. At the Age of Information, as long as knowledge is respected and cherished, libraries won’t extinct from our lives. On the other hand, libraries should not refuse the latest information technology, which will enable them to regain those young readers.【练习1】(观点对比型)(仿写)Computers in S tudents’ Flats1.

With the advent of the digital age, social media has becomean integral part of our daily lives. It has revolutionizedthe way we communicate, interact, and disseminate information. The influence of social media on interpersonal communicationis a topic of great interest and debate. This essay will explore the positive and negative impacts of social media on how we connect with one another. On the positive side, social media has made it easier for people to stay in touch with friends and family, regardlessof geographical barriers. It allows for instant communication through various platforms, enabling users to share updates, photos, and videos with a few clicks. This has beenparticularly beneficial for those who are far away from their loved ones, as it helps to maintain a sense of closeness and connection. Moreover, social media has also been a powerful tool for networking and making new connections. It provides a platform for individuals to express their ideas and interests, which can lead to the discovery of like-minded individuals and the formation of new friendships and professional relationships. However, the pervasive use of social media has also had negative implications for interpersonal communication. One of the primary concerns is the reduction in face-to-face interaction. As people become more accustomed tocommunicating through screens, they may lack the necessary social skills to engage in real-life conversations. This can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness, despite being constantly "connected" to others online.Additionally, the nature of social media can sometimes foster a culture of superficiality and instant gratification. The focus on likes, shares, and comments can lead to a preoccupation with one's online image rather than genuine connections. This may result in people prioritizing the quantity of their online connections over the quality oftheir relationships. In conclusion, while social media has undoubtedly made communication more convenient and accessible, it is essential to be mindful of its effects on our interpersonal relationships. It is crucial to strike a balance between online and offline interactions to maintain meaningful connections and to develop the necessary social skills for effective communication. As we continue to navigate thedigital landscape, it is imperative to use social media responsibly and to cultivate relationships that are based on authenticity and mutual understanding.。

How to Lose WeightA beautiful and healthy figure is everyone’s dream. However, not everyone can easily fulfill this dream. Overweight people often have to find precise ways to lose weight. For normal healthy people, weight is gained by taking in more calories than the body needs. Therefore,if you want to lose weight, you either have to eat fewer calories or find ways to use up more calories you take in. Dieting is probably the most popular way of losing weight, because when on a diet, you are taking fewer calories. However, the body needs many elements in order to stay healthy, and “fad” or starvation diets are bad because they are not nutritiously balanced. A better way of dieting is to keep track of everything you eat, either by your own careful choices or by buying, for a week at a time, the packaged meals sold by some diet companies. If you do not normally exercise, you should also begin sensible exercises for your age and lifestyle to help your body use up surplus calories. In short,a combined effort of reducing the caloriesyou eat and using up more calories than usual through exercises should help you shed off part of your body.。

For questions 1-7,choose the bestanswer from the four choices marked A),B),C)and D). For questions8-10,complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.Small Schools RisingThis year's list of the top 100 high schools shows that today, those with fewer students are flourishing.Fifty years ago, they were the latest thing in educational reform: big, modern, suburban high schools with students counted in the thousands. As baby boomers(二战后婴儿潮时期出生的人) came of high-school age, big schools promised economic efficiency. A greater choice of courses, and, of course, better football teams. Only years later did we understand the trade-offs this involved: the creation of excessive bureaucracies(官僚机构),the difficulty of forging personal connections between teachers and students. SAT scores began dropping in 1963; today, on average,30% of students do not complete high school in four years, a figure that rises to 50% in poor urban neighborhoods. It embracesdistrict-sanctioned magnet schools, such as the Talented and Gifted School, with 198 students, and the Science and Engineering Magnet,with383,which share a building in Dallas, as well as the City Honors School in Buffalo, N.Y., which grew out of volunteer evening seminars for students. And it includes alternative schools with students selected bylottery(抽签),such as H-B Woodlawn in Arlington, Va. And most noticeable of all, there isthe phenomenon of large urban and suburban high schools that have split up into smaller units of a few hundred, generally housed in the same grounds that once boasted thousands of students all marching to the same band.Hillsdale High School in San Mateo, Calif, is one of those, ranking No.423-among the top 2% in the country-on Newsweek's annual ranking of America's top high schools. The success of small schools is apparent in the listings. A Hillsdale teacher who became principal last year, remembers sitting with other teachers watching students file out of a graduation ceremony and asking one another in astonishment, "How did that student graduate?"So in 2003 Hillsdale remade itself into three "houses," romantically named Florence,Marrakech and Kyoto. Each of the 300 arriving ninth graders are randomly(随机地)assigned to one of the houses. But that is also its strength: it's easy for readers to understand, and to do the arithmetic for their own schools if they'd like.Ranking schools is always controversial, and this year a group of 38superintendents(地区教育主管)from five states wrote to ask that their schools be excludedfrom the calculation."It is impossible to know which high schools are 'the best' in the nation, "their letter read. Modern.

With a view to improving their image and comprehensive strength, many universities are rushing to build luxurious constructions. Some people are in favor of this trend, because the considerably more comfortable environment could let students apply themselves to academic studies. The others who hold the opposite opinion think it not only wastes money but also disturbs the normal teaching activities. Generally speaking, newly-built blocks help to meet the increasingly demanding requirements of the modern students. But with the breakdown of heaps of age-old buildings, their original historic significances woulddisappear. Most importantly, the trend towards luxury shows the commercialization of college education, which gives negative influence on students. Therefore, I strongly hope universities could attach more attention to the construction of specialties and improvement of their cultural connotation, attracting students by their excellent teaching qualities and research achievements.【点评】首段直接点题,说明现象;第二段分述人们对此现象各持己见;第三段陈述自己的观点,并提出建议。

an aching head I woke up half an hour later than usual. I was in such a hurry that,
when making an omelet, I got my fingers burnt and splashed the omelet all over the
A Most Unlucky Day
I had a streak of tough luck yesterday. Everything, it seemed to me, went wrong.
And I simply couldn’t understand why all the bad things happened to me in one single
day.
In the morning, as luck would have it, my alarm clock didn’t ring, and with

Suddenly a small girl ran onto the road from the left. She was chasing a dog
and she wasn’t paying any attention to the traffic. I immediately applied the brakes

and wise.
(One
(What was the setting),
I wandered around the park. To my delight, I found a few middle-school students
talking to each other in English in one corner of the park. I went up and spoke to

When I arrived at the park, I found, to my surprise, that there were so many

for my English class, because my English teacher is very strict and demanding,
and he gets angry whenever any student is late for his class.
After getting off the 7:40 subway, I raced all the way from the station to my
school, thinking it would be impossible for me to flag a taxi at this hour of the
floor of the kitchen.
Having no time for my breakfast at that point, I rushed out of my house with
an empty stomach and hurting fingers. I had intended to catch the 7:30 subway, but
An Early Morning Walk
One morning I got up very early, and everything around was very quiet. The sun
had just risen, shining brilliantly and everything seemed to be covered with a layer
day. At the corner of the street near my school, I abruptly bumped into a man and,
worse luck, broke the glasses I had bought for 500 yuan just last week. With scarcely
various activities. Some were doing morning exercises, some were playing badminton
and some old people were having their tea while talking to each other cheerfully.
(What was
one healthy and wise.
Walk”(1988.6.),2003年6月出现过包含记叙文的作文,即“An Eye-Witness Account of
a Traffic Accident”。
any time to receive or offer an apology, I just kept on running and running. At
long last, I arrived at the school only to find, with great sadness mixed with
1. 以“A Most Unlucky Day”为题,想想该怎么写。

Last night I was driving home from work. I had an accident. I was following behind
a truck, driving at about 30 kilometers an hour. I was watching the traffic carefully
An Early Morning
