1 IntroductionThe film “Scraping Therapy” reflects the difference of value and culture views between western society and orient society. China society has been receiving impact of Confucianism for thousands years. Confucianism is known as paying regard to human relationship and ethic. Piety, courtesy and localism are most important ethic. But in Western culture which is more emphasis on individualism, independence and equality. So conflicts in culture and value are unavoidable. These conflicts have shown in the story. In Chinese culture, physical punishment is commonly used by Chinese family. They think this will help to growing up. But in western society it is absolutely forbidden. Any abusing children were viewed as illegal conduct. As to show respect to friends, Da Tong Xu punished his own son physically in front of friends. But this was misinterpreted as violence by his foreign friends. This is a misunderstanding in culture between East and West.In this film, grandpa who had living in China for many years treated his grandson with a widespread treatment in Chinese folk named “Scraping Therapy”. This is a very ancient Chinese medicine therapy, and is handed down from one generation to another which has thousands of years of history in China. In the United States, this is an unfounded treatment. When the child gets sick, hospital is the only correct choice. Scraping Therapy in the story led to great conflict and misunderstanding. There are many other culture and value conflicts performed in the film, such as conflict between Chinese traditionalculture and Western industrial civilization, conflict of the education of their children’s daily habits and so forth. How to avoid the tragedy of the story? We must strengthen the East-West cultural exchange and learning, and only with respect to different cultures and inclusive will it be possible to avoid the culture and values of conflict.2 Comparison of Chinese and American values based on the movieChinese and Americans possess different values about success. At the beginning of the movie, XU Da-tong is rewarded as the best designer of video games by the company. When he is requested to make a short speech, he mentions that he would especially extend thanks to his boss and all of his colleagues. This is a typical Chinese speech made after being successful. They attribute their success to other’s help and cooperation. It is what Chinese people usually do on that occasion. In China, relationship plays a critical role in people’s lives. Many Chinese people get ahead with the help of their family background and friends. Therefore, they are used to extending their gratitude to other people even though their success has little to do with some of them. They seldom say that they succeed because of their own ability and hard work. Nevertheless, Americans hold different values in this aspect. Americans are more likely to express pride in themselves and their accomplishment rather than to express pride in their group, company, family or hometown.3 Family Education Conflict3.1. Chinese Family Education ViewIn China, when children do something wrong, parents will scold and beat children as a punishment. Chinese family education is famous for strictness. There are Chinese old sayings can show the strictness, such as “to feed without teaching is the father’s fault”, “spare the rod, spoil the son”, just as the words Datong’s father said: “打是亲,骂是爱(to scold and to beat a naughty boy is due to love)”. It is also common for parents, especially parents in the rural areas, to leave their children alone at home, Chinese parents are always busy with their jobs or farming, and there is not enough time for them to take care of their children, so they have to leave their children at home. It is not surprising at all in the rural areas to find children lying on the floor with fly flying around them. Nowadays, with the popularization of the television, it is safer and more convenient for parents to leave children at home.3.2 American Family Education ViewIn America, parents never hit their children for their mistakes .They do not think it will do any help to scold and beat them. It will be more useful to encourage them to stand up again than to scold and beat them, which will only discourage their confidence. And most importantly, it is illegal to beat children. In America, it is also illegal to leave their children alone at home.3.3 The Reason for Their Different ViewsThe reason for the differences between Chinese parents and American parents is that they each have different role orientation. Chinese parents consider their children as their own property. They think the children are affiliated to them. The children can only grow up under their control. Most of the Chinese parents play the role of arranging children’s fate. This kind of relationship is obviously unfair. However, American parents regard their children as free and independent individuals since their children are born. They put their children in an equal position. They pay much attention to the equal communication and respect children’s ideas and needs. In the processof their children’s growth, they give them guidance and help.1 Hence, Chinese parents have rights to scold and beat the children when they do something wrong and to leave them alone at home, while it is illegal to do such things in America.3.4 Family Education Conflict Reflected in Gua ShaIn Gua Sha, Datong’s son Denis hit his friend Kunlan’s son Paul, Datong asks Denis to apologize to Paul, but Denis refuses to say sorry to Paul, then Datong hit Denis on the face in front of the public. In Chinese eye, it is perfectly justified to do so because they think they do this for children’s good, and to hit children is to love them and to make them become a useful person. Chinese parents is always educating their own children first when they deal with the quarrel or fight among children, while American parents pay attention to the truth. That’s why Datong first asked Denis to apologize to Paul without finding who is wrong or right. However, in America, parents are just the children’s keepers. They can’t go too far scolding their children, let alone beat them. That’s why Datong’s friend Kunlan is startled when he sees Datong hit Denis on the face. There is another typical plot can embody the different family education views of Chinese and American. When Datong’s father stays at the station, and Jane is at work, Datong has to leave Denis alone at home in order to pick his father home. When Datong is on his way to the police station, he calls Jane. Here is the conversation:Jane: Datong, where are you? I called twice, and no answer.Datong: I was at the police station.Jane: What? What happened?Datong: Dad has a…Jane: Is he ok?Datong: Yes, he’s met up with an emergency.Jane: where is Denis? Is he with you?Datong: He’s home, I mean he’s sleep.Jane: You mean you left Denis at home all by himself?Datong: Oh, Jesus! You called home.Datong’s father: Datong, you are driving too fast. Isn’t it breaking the law?Datong: Dad, I left Denis alone at home. I’ve already broken the law. From the conversation, it is known that it is illegal to leave children at home.3.4.1 Different Views of Interpersonal RelationshipDealing with the interpersonal relationship, American culture pays attention to individualism, while Chinese culture pays attention to collectivism. The following statements by Ting-Toomey are very clear:Individualism emphasizes the importance of individual identity over group identity, individual rights over group rights and individual needs over group needs, which gives priority to individual, advocates individual benefits and individual freedom. Americans think that everyone has the freedom to doeverything he wants as long as what he does will not interrupt others’ benefit, and he will be responsible for what he does. In the contrast, collectivism attaches importance to “we” identity over the “I” identity, group rights over individual rights and in-group-oriented needs over individual want and desires. Collectivism promotes relational interdependence, in-group harmony, and in-group collaborative spirit. Not harming collective benefit is the precondition of what one does and what one says. When Chinese deal with the relationship of individual benefit and collective benefit, they think more of collective benefit. Sometimes, they will try their best to realize collective benefit at the expense of individual benefit. Chinese are always required to follow rules docilely and repress themselves. This kind of self-repression makes American scholars think that Chinese culture as I-less culture. Chinese culture emphasizes the full devotion to the collectivity and ignores individuality, while American culture gives a limited devotion to the collectivity. In Gua Sha, when Jane gave birth to Denis at the hospital, Datong did not accompany her at the hospital because he had a meeting at the company. This kind of choice is understandable in China, where collectivity outweighs individuality, but is unacceptable and unforgivable in American society. And this is not only the conflict between collectivism and individualism, but also the conflict in interpersonal relationship view.3.4.2 Family Conflict Reflected in Gua ShaFamily is the most basic element and carrier in the Chinese culture. Chinese family stresses the love of family and the love of consanguinity. They think that dog doesn’t eat dog(虎毒不食子),so when the Children Welfare Bureau accuses Datong of child abuse, he thinks it incredible and ridiculous. He says to his wife Jane, “A father loves his son. That’s the way where it works. Why do I have to prove my love, make up speeches? What the hell are we doing, Jane? It’s turning upside down. Everything is turning upside down!”However, it is acceptable in America, which is a place pays more attention to the truth and evidence. Filial piety is also a very important virtue in Chinese family. In the movie, Datong lies to the judge that he is the one who does Gua Sha to Denis in order to protect his father who is the real one does Gua Sha to Denis. He thinks that if he tells the judge it is his father does Gua Sha to Denis, he sells his own father out, and then he will not be a filial son. However, Americans will never understand the concept of filial piety in Chinese culture.3.4.3 Family Conflict Reflected in Gua ShaIn Gua Sha, Datong asks his friend as well as boss Kunlan to be his counsel in the hearing, while Kunlan is just a property right lawyer, who knows little about family law. Kunlan suggests Datong to find a professional family law lawyer, but Datong insists on asking him to be his counsel. The only reason is that Kunlan is his friend, and he trusts him. The following is the conversation between Datong and his friend Kunlan:Kunlan: …Family law is a very special land. It’s short time to ask acontinuous day of hearing so that you can get someone who is qualified. Datong: John, you know how much I love Denis! You’re best lawyer I know and my best friend. I mean who is ready to help.Kunlan: But I am just a property right lawyer, I knew little about family law. Datong: Denis is my best creation. I have a property right over him, right? They made a mistake, and all that you should do is to point it out and I can take Denis home. I’m counting on you!Take another example, in the second hearing, Kunlan tells the judge that Datong once hit Denis. Kunlan’s attestation lead the case to be taken over by the formal court, Datong is very angry and decides to quit the job, thinking that Kunlan’s behavior betrays friend. Look at the conversation between Datong and his friend as well as boss Kunlan:Datong: I won’t talk to you!Kunlan: I am so sorry. I’m trying to tell you. I couldn’t lie, they knew everything.Datong: I don’t have the time and intonation to hear you to justify your action.I just want to get my son home and get my life back.Kunlan: And that’s why more than ever you need this job!Datong: I consider you as my friend, but you sold me out. How dare you expect me to work with you again?Kunlan: I just told the truthIn China, loyalty to friends is very important, while Americans are more rational. They emphasize the truth and know exactly what they should do. In a word, Chinese friendship focuses on human feelings, American friendship focuses on truth and reason.3家庭教育冲突3.1。

《集体主义与个人主义——电影《刮痧》的中西文化对比分析(英文)》篇一Collectivism and Individualism: A Sino-Western Cultural Comparison Analysis of the Movie "Scraping一、引言电影《刮痧》作为一部反映中西文化差异的影片,深入地探讨了集体主义和个人主义这两种截然不同的文化观念。

跨文化《刮痧》Analysis the value differences between western countries and china from 《 Guasha 》

2010 级英本一班冯莹BC10110105Analysis the value differences between western countries and china from《Guasha 》The film “The Treatment Guasha” reflects the value differences between western countries and china. This is mainly reflected in the medical field value legal system value, education value and the relationship between friends to different value orientation of four aspects. So conflicts in culture and value are unavoidable. These conflicts have shown in the essay.First, Let we talk about the medical field value different. Guasha is the theme of the movie, and is also the movie character conflict. This therapy is common in Chinese folk, is one of Chinese traditional natural therapy. However, this therapy Method arrived to the United States, treatment produces blood became Datong violence on children’s Evidence, resulting in Datong slapped with a lawsuit, almost lost custody of children. Although many Chinese successful examples prove its scientific nature and the validity, and made a great contribution. The West also began to sit up and take notice of traditional Chinese medicine now, and get the qualifications in the foreign. But this treatment is still not recognized by the mainstream Western medicine, can be seen from the movie, from ordinary people to judge to know nothing at all, let alone its efficacy. The real problem is the lack of mutual understanding and communication.Secondly, we speak of western legal conception and Home education value. In the United States, children were as a separate individual, independence to enjoy their own interests, like adult with respect in the same way, the guardian’s responsibilityprovisions are very fine. Parents can not be without self-control ability of the children left home alone, not to abuse children, should respect children's privacy. But in the movie,at the celebration party, Xu Datong son Denis fought with his boss Quinlan's son. Xu Datong wants his children to the boss's son apologize, child refused, Datong smacked the child. The other side not only ungrateful, but that this move is cruelty to children. And in the film, when Datong was anxious to go to the police to take up his father, not take sleeping son with him, put him stay at home alone, and said " don't drop the children grow up ", this is often the case in China, and in the United States, this is considered a child abuse the behavior of this discipline and care children reflected the different attitude, reflects the western for child custody definition of the concept of different cultures. In the Hearing meeting, a hospital doctor catches up evidence which is his wife in the Operation room to give birth to a child, her husband suggest protected wife not child .The word that Datong does not respect the child 's right to life, a beginning not to want a child, even less likely to be fond of this child. This sparked Xu Datong's protest.Because at that time only allowed him to choose one of two persons, so he only does that in that case. In the majority of Americans, each individual is the one and only, everyone's right to life should be respected, no matter is not the unborn child or others. But the Chinese traditional culture is the core values of collectivism. In such cultures, groups of interest is much higher than the groups of individual interest, individual interest can even sacrifice when necessary.Third, is the relationship between friends to different value orientation. In the United States the dynamics of the community, friends are not willing to bear too much responsibility, social relationship is of the order of law, reason, and human. Chinese society is relatively stable, people generally reluctant to contact with strangers and contacts, friends pay attention to time as long as possible, obligations, the more the better. In the film, When Quinlan to testify in court do see Xu Datong hit his son , Xu Datong very angry, think Quinlan betray yourself, then quit, for Xu Datong this is "different, not terribly ". While Quinlan felt very wronged and puzzled, he thought he was just being honest, but he really saw the play Denis, and he also saw the Great Harmony in Denis back from “steak ". The difference between Chinesefriend views caused the rupture of friends. In conclusion, when we dealing with westerners, if the living environment on the other side, history, customs, taboos and know nothing at all, there will be misunderstanding and even conflict. The film shows many differences between Chinese and American culture. These differences do not indicate what kind of culture more advantageous, because every culture has its own advantages. Due to the cultural differences and misunderstandings is worthy of our consideration. A deeper understanding, adapted, changed and consciousness of the differences may promote a more effective communication between different cultural backgrounds.。

分析《刮痧》中的文化碰撞

分析《刮痧》中的文化碰撞

Cultural Clashes in Guasha11级英语1班陈菁菁3116405008One of the characteristics of culture is that culture is ethno-centric. The movie Guasha is a living presentation of this characteristic for that the intercultural communication in this movie provides the audience with a perceptual window through which American culture interprets and judges Chinese culture. It is the ethno-centrism of the American in this movie that leads to a subjective education of how Chinese culture conducts its daily business and therefore affected the confrontation of cultural clashes between these two countries. There are several cultural clashes in the movie as follows; The first clash is the cultural value of filial piety. Filial piety is the kind of value which applies to Chinese culture, but it does not apply to American culture. It belongs to cultural-specific value. In the movie of Guasha, during the first hearing, Datong Xu bear the responsibility of scraping Dennis for his father. When his American friend Benton Davis knows the truth and asked Datong Xu for reason, Datong Xu firmly answered: “Because we are Chinese.”From this, it is not difficult to recollect the impression that China, like most East Asian cultures, is highly collective while America is highly individual which can also be justified by Hofstede’s study of IBM that the U.S. ranked number 1 in individualism worldwide. The social value of the the individualism is to to speak their mind and tell the truth while for the collectivists, they have a built-in need to maintain harmony and avoid confrontations. Consequently, Chinese culture values more of filial piety while American culture puts more aspects on the principal of liability of fault. The second clash is the different opinions on the matter of keeping the adult or the baby under the condition of dystocia. During the second hearing, the prosecution counsel points out that Datong Xu’s decision of keeping the adult proves him to be an irresponsible father because he deprives of the right of the baby coming to this world, whereas Datong Xu thinks that there is life, there is hope, of which the connotation is that he has only one wife and once she lost her life he can never have a son. From this, we know that under the different social systems, Chinese culture tends to involve with more of human feelings while in American culture, the law-governing culture plays the major role. From the perspective that it is illegal to leave children alone at home, we can also sense the law-governing American culture.Third, the lack of Chinese medicine knowledge about Guasha of Americancontributes to the major clash between China and America. Guasha, as a traditional Chinese medical treatment, has a history of two thousand years. In the movie, Datong Xu repeatedly stresses that Guasha is based on the theory of Jing and Luo of the human body. It is an effective and common way in China to treat some light diseases. Not until his American friend visits China for a personal experience of Guasha and finds that Guasha leaves painful-looking marks that are not actually painful or harmful st all does the whole misunderstanding being settled down. The reason for this cultural clash may due to that the United States has a low uncertainty-avoidance need. Unlike high uncertainty-avoidance cultures which try to avoid uncertainty and ambiguity, American more easily accept the uncertainty inherent in life. Therefore when the authorities in the movie see the obvious painful-looking marks on Dennis’s back, they naturally internalized the unusual scene and do not trust Datong Xu’s explanation. The forth clash is the different priorities of cultural values. Similar as the features of collectivism and individualism, most East Asian cultures think highly of the relations among a group members while Western cultures prioritize the value of equality, freedom, and self-reliance. In the movie, the Chinese family goes through hell when their son is taken away by the child protection agency. Disregard of any other factor, we can intensely feel how depressed and helpless both the parents and the child are. For Chinese, family always stands in an irreplaceable position in their minds and it is the unity and completeness of a family that create the basic significance of a family. In other words, the love for a child is perfected and completed through family. Apparently, when the child protection agency takes the child away from his parents for the child’s own good, they fail to take care of the child’s psychological gap as well as the rest of the family members’ sentiments. The fifth cultural clash is the way of loving and educating children. In the film, the son of Datong Xu, Dennis beat the son of Datong Xu’s boss, Paul. In order to give his boss face, Datong Xu beat his own son in front of the public. The face culture is in effect no fresh and deeply entrenched in Chinese culture. According to Hofstede-Bond’s value dimensions, power distance refers to attitudes toward differences in authority. The face culture reflects that Chinese culture is of high power distance. Therefore Datong Xu as an employee has a great deal of respect for his boss. Contrastingly, his boss Benton Davis can hardly agree on Datong Xu’s behaviour of beating Dennis just for the sake of the so called “face”. This is because that American culture is of low power distance and hence both the employees and their superiors enjoy a more comfortable and equal way of getting along with. Another detail is thatafter Datong beat his son, he comforts his son: “I beat you because I love you,” which is obviously not precisely understood by his son because Dennis beat Paul again at school for the reason that he loves Paul. Chinese culture is of high-context culture orientation. Datong Xu is a traditional Chinese and when he says those words to Dennis he has an expectation that Dennis is able to understand the unarticulated communication, whereas he overlooks that the environment Dennis grows up and the education Dennis receives are based on American culture, which belongs to low-context culture. Therefore Dennis tends to understand meaning at one level only. The film Guasha penetrates to the cultural clashes between China and America from the perspective of a sentimental story of a Chinese family living in America, offers a profound thinking over the appropriate attitude and approaches to cultural clashes, and delivers the information that it is possible to overcome all the cultural clashes and show mutual respect and understanding for each other’s cultural values.。

从刮痧看中西文化差异1

论文:从电影《刮痧》中看中西文化差异Culture differences reflected in the film Guasha TreatmentAbstract: The story in the Chinese movie Guasha Treatment took place in the U. S.A. The movie shows us a legal conflict resulted from Guasha, a Chinese medical treatment of children. It seems that the story is a misunderstanding or a legal dispute, but actually, it indicates some cultural differences between China and the West .This paper tries to analyze these differences reflected in the film Guasha Treatment.Key words: Guasha; cultural difference1. IntroductionAs one of the most popular films released in 2001, Guasha Treatment made the culture differences between China and the west be a hot topic because of the sharp clashes reflected in the film. The film told the story about a young couple—Xu Datong and Jian Ning—who immigrated to Middle America, and had a son. They are wrongfully accused of child abuse because of American miscomprehension of Guasha—an ancient oriental practice that releases toxins from the body by scraping the skin with jade at relevant acupuncture points. In the later story, Datong suffered a lot. He was abandoned by his best friend and lost his job. He was forced to separate with his wife and his lovely son. And he had to sent his old father who came to America and intended to enjoy a good life with him back China. All of those clashes were attributed to his different culture compared with local people who he had to confront. And this paper will discuss the difference between China and the west based on the film Guasha Treatment.2. Culture differences2.1 Emotion and lawsThe concept of value is a order that people can not be avoided in social or cultural life. People's behavior rules, ways of thinking, cognitive criterion, social philosophy, deductive reasoning and evaluation ofthings, moral standards are so deeply restricted by their own different values. 【1】 As a immigrant who had lived in the United States for eight years , Datong is essentially dominated by the Chinese traditional values, for example, thinking highly of filial piety. As a result, Datong lies the court that it was himself who Guasha to his son, in order to protect his father. However, in America, if telling lies in court, people will be charged with perjury. When his good friend, Mr. Quinlin knows that it was not Datong but his father Guasha to Dennis, he is very shocked. According to American ideas, each person should not perjury, even if it is to protect his father, However as a American, Quinlin can not understand Chinese culture value system. In the Chinese culture, people will consciously or unconsciously deal with the problem according to traditional Chinese values. This is a reflection of the cultural unconsciousness.2.2 Friendship and obligationThe concept “cultural unconsciousness” is put forward by the Li ShuYi in 1988, which is said that it is one of the phenomenon of human unconsciousness formed in a certain social and cultural environment. It dominates people's behavior in a subtle way, and thus unconsciously, indirectly, carries out the dominant role by awareness. [2]As the existence of cultural unconsciousness, Chinese people tend to make it full of human interest even in the field beyond human emotions. Chinese people think that a good friend should “through fire and w ater without any hesitation”. In the film this concept also affects the behavior of Datong. However in American society, people are unwilling to assume more obligations of friends. In their mind, the order is a legal, reason and human feeling when they deal with a problem. Because Quinlin was his friend, Datong thinks certainly that Quinlin should be loyal to him regardless of any circumstances. So at the first hearing, Datong naturally thinks he can trust Quinlin as his own lawyer even though Quinlin isn’t major in that sector. However, after seen the bruise on Dennis’ back, Quinlin believed that Datong had “long-term punishment and neglect to the son “. He could not longer defend for Datong, because the West are often more rational than emotional. Even for friends and families they have to act according to law, which is the manifestation of Americans cultural unconsciousness.2.3 Children's educationIn the beginning of the story, Datong's son Dennis hit the boss's son Paul. Datong immediately calls Dennis to apologize to Paul, but Quinlan think that fighting is normal and there is no question of the apology. Datong fights his son in front of the boss because his son did not apologize tothe boss's son, and says: “Hitting him because he is my child, I beat him is to respect you. It’s to give you face” This is incredible for the boss; while Datong view that this is a performance of loving the son and respecting for the boss. According Chinese tradition, parents view children as their lives continue, hoping that children will amount to anything and achieve their wishes or be successful. Thus, in the views of the Chinese parents, some blame or beating on the children is one of love for their children, which are full of the expectation of their children to become useful. So we have thousands of years old maxim: “The lack of children's education is the fault of father”, “Children who don't suffer pains and curses will be not capable” and other ideas and concepts. In Western's eyes, this kind of behavior is very strange. West countries emphasize democracy and freedom, which are not only performance of national, racial, but also present in many families. In a West family, each member including male and female, regardless of age, is equal and each member is entitled to full democracy and freedom.2.4 View of faceAt the court, as a witness Quinlin said the fact that Dennis used to be beaten by Datong, which makes Datong feel very disappointed and angry, and even broke off with Quinlin who is both of his boss and best friend. In the nest period of dialogue, reasons for fighting his son are pointedQuinlin (boss): “I just told the truth! You should not hit Dennis!”Datong: “Why I hit him? Why? My own son! I hit him for showing respect for you! To give you face! Do you k now?”Quinlin: “What a mess China's logic, how can you hit the child to show face for me!”Datong: “incomprehensible!”Language is the representation of culture. The “mess” logic that Quinlin said can be quite understandable by Chinese people. So what’s th e reason of that mistake? Here has to talk about the concept of the Chinese people's face. One Chinese writer Lin Yutang said in his article《face and the rule of law》, “ Chinese people's face, not only for wash, it also can be scratched, and can be lose, and can be toured, and can be fighting for, and sometimes it seems to the be first meaning to struggle for face in life.”[3] Whether a person is rich or poor, superior or inferior people, face are wanted for everyone. Chinese people value the face in particular for a major consequence of that people are all living in an invisible web of relationships, in which there is no equality possibility, and peopleseem to agree that unequal relationship. [4]However, in the United States, this is a logic that just can not be understood, as Quinlan stated in the film.3. ConclusionThere is no denying the fact that we will confront many culture clashes during the, just like the film performed. At the same time, they are not the clashes that we can not avoid. In the film, Quinlin has made a through the way of coming to China and exper iencing what’s Guasha. As a consequence, successful intercultural communications can be taken if people have the willing to know each other's culture.[1] 许奋荣,美籍华人价值观取向的定位------评影片《刮痧》[J],中山大学学报论丛,2004(4)272-275[2] 任玉玲,透过电影《刮痧》看许大同的“文化无意识”[J],电影评介,2009(06):48 [3] 林语堂, 1954,林语堂散文集[M ] ,香港:香港世界文摘出版社[4] 黄鸣,从电影《刮痧》看中西文化冲突与融合[J],绵阳师范学院学报,2005(04):100-103。

电影《刮痧》中的中美文化差异

电影《刮痧》中的中美文化差异

电影《刮痧》中的中美文化差异一、5:47和56:24:Xu hit his son Denis because Denis hit the son of xu’s boss, at the middle of the film xu tells his boss that he hit his own son is only to show his respect to his boss John Quinlan, that time Quinlan feels puzzled “what a Chinese logic”, yes, American can never understand such a logic full of Chinese characteristic, because they respect every one including the children, they won‟t beat a child to please the boss, and there is no such a conception of degree between employee and employer, they feel everyone is equal, which is quite different from china. Connected to the second scene, the third difference I want to analyze is the care for the children. In America, people pay more attention to the right of children which can be seen from the law—leaving children alone at home is illegal, while in China it is so common that almost everyone may experience such loneliness. And Children Welfare Agency does work in America which shows the importance Americans attach to children‟s right. What‟s more, I remember a line “No one won the case, especially the child.‟ In my opinion, it also manifests the universal concern from the American public to the children.二、89:31和90:38in the film, more than there times, the people focus on the rule, the law, the procedure. At the Christmas Eve Xu wants to return back to his home pretending as a Santa Claus, what a pity, the security recognizes him andpersuades :you are always a good tenement, never causes troubles for me. And another scene is at the end of the film , the judge says :I have to follow the procedure.‟ However, in China people always have to ask for a favor (讨个人情)to do something, and later you have to pay back the favor (还人情).三、27:20和31:001.Gua Sha, Chinese traditional medicine a craft, in the long river of 2000 years of history, has remained robust health in China's vast territory to survive .However, there is nothing about it in American medical books. And the “经”and”气”Da Tong is talking about, can’t be proved scientifically. And Gua Sha is not recognized as a legal form of treatment.2.When the judge asked Da Tong:Did you do this Gua Sha to your son yourself. He answered:Yes,I did it myself. As a immigrant who has lived in the United States for eight years,Datong is essentially dominated by the Chinese traditional values, for example, thinking highly of filial piety. As a result,Datong lies the court that it was himself who did Guasha to his son,in order to protect his father. When his friend Mr.Quinlin knows that it was not Datong but his father Guasha to Dennis,he is very shocked.According to American ideas, each person should perjury, even if it is to protect his father. In the Chinese culture, people will consciously or unconsciously deal with the problem according to traditional Chinese values.四、41:30The nurse doesn’t understand what Datong did when his wife gave a birth tobaby.Datong said”save the wife, not the baby”.In Chinese traditional view,it’s a common sense留得青山在,哪怕没柴烧。

Differences between Chinese and AmericanCultures in GuashaWhen I was a freshman in college, my friends recommended me to watch a well-known film called Guasha for the first time. Now, I am a sophomore student and I am required to write a paper on cultural differences. So, I came back to review the movie from a multicultural aspect and I have many different feelings after watching it again.Guasha, the movie which focus on the differences between Chinese and American cultures, is the most successful one after Perking Men in New York in Chinese film industry. After years of hard work, Xu Datong, a Chinese immigrant to the US, h as finally achieved success as an outstanding video game designer. With hispromising career and loving family, he feels he has become a true American.Datong’s father comes over from China, and uses a traditional Chinese medical technique, called guasha, to treat Datong`s son, Dennis. Unexpectedly, an American doctor thinks the bruises on Dennis` back left by the guasha treatment are signs of child abuse, and the finger is pointed at Datong. In the court, Datong loses his mind and finally he loses the custody of his son. After seeing this scene, the audience, especially the Chinese, are shocked and think it is ridiculous and foolish. Why that something seems quite simple and easy to us can be difficult to understand and even misleading? The answer is culture difference. The film Guasha reflects the difference of value and culture views bet ween western society and orient society. Here are my new feelings.First of all, value difference in education. At the very beginning of the movie, Datong's son Denis quarreled with his boss' son while playing game and Datong give a slap to Denis and let him making an apology to show his respect to his boss. While his boss can not understand him and this even be an evidence of Datong's violence in the court later. Every one of us Chinese can understand Datong's behavior and it is definitely normal in China. In Chinese traditional notion, parents regard their children as personal belongs. They hold the views that now that they give birth to their children, it is undeniable that they have the right to educate even punish their children. They require their children to behave what they tell them and obey the rules. As Datong said in the film, he is Denis's father and he definitely loves him and it is no need to prove this. While in American, people believe children are the social wealth, so they have lots of communities and associations to protect children's tights and benefits, using social power to guarantee their health and sound grow up. In Chinese culture, physical punishment is commonly used by Chinese family. They think this will help to growing up.But in western society it is absolutely forbidden. Any behavior of abusing children was viewed as illegal conduct. The conflict happens on the usinglanguages between the different generations, the way of teaching their children. Of course, the main one is the Chinese traditional values and American ones.Second, the value differences in family and social relationship.. Family has played an important role in Chinese society for a long time. Emotion is another understanding level in this film. It includes the love between father and son, mother and son, grandfather and grandson and friends. But the main aspect is the love between father and son. There are two pairs of father and son in this movie. I still remember when Datong's friend ask Jian Ling why Datong conceal the fact and said that it is himself but not his father who gua sha for his son Denis. What Jian Ling answered shocked me, she said︰" Because he is a Chinese. " This reflect an important moral character in China―Xiao, which is also called filial piety in English. Chinese think Xiao is protecting their parents from any unfair and dangerous things, even if sometimes it will at the expenses of their own safety and benefits. Compared with most of Chinese, Americans pay more attention on themselves and they respect the truth.Third, value difference in traditional culture. Chinese society has been receiving impact of Confucianism for thousands of years. Confucianism is known as paying regard to human relationship and ethic. Piety, courtesy and loyalty are most important ethic. But in Western culture which is more emphasis on individualism, independence and equality. They tend to be egocentric. Guasha is a traditional treatment in China, but sadly it is rarely known in American. Thus, they can not understand this medical treatment. At the end of the movie, Datong and Jianning are teaching Denis to read some phrases in Chinese. It remind me of the great attraction of Chinese culture, Wherever you go, whatever you do, you should always remember you root/In a word, it is inevitable that there are many differences between China and American. As science and technology progress, the world gets even smaller and the communication between them is more frequent. Our country, China, should absorb the essence and does not eliminate the bad things and seek the common ground with other countries. Only in this way can our country become a more powerful. As for our college students, we should hold a objective view towards cultural difference and feel proud for our own culture.。

《集体主义与个人主义——电影《刮痧》的中西文化对比分析(英文)》篇一Collectivism and Individualism: A Sino-Western Cultural Comparison Analysis of the Movie "Shaving Gua Sha"In the realm of cultural studies, the contrast between collectivism and individualism stands as a pivotal discussion point, especially when it comes to understanding the diverse cultural backgrounds of the East and the West. The movie "Shaving Gua Sha" provides an interesting lens through which to explore these two contrasting cultural ideologies. This analysis aims to delve into the film's representation of collectivism in Chinese culture and individualism in Western culture, offering a comparative analysis of the two ideologies.Collectivism in Chinese CultureThe movie "Shaving Gua Sha" offers a vivid portrayal of collectivism in Chinese culture. This ideology emphasizes the unity and interdependence of individuals within a group or community. In the film, the protagonist's family experiences a series of challenges that highlight the collective responsibilities and obligations of family members towards each other. The protagonist's father's predicament of being accused of scraping "gua sha" on his son's back is a microcosm of this collectivist mindset. The family's response is not one of individual self-interest but rather a collective effort to resolve the issue and restore harmony within the family unit. This is evident in the way family members rallytogether, supporting each other, and even seeking help from friends and community members to resolve the crisis.Furthermore, the film shows how the family's honor and reputation are intertwined with that of their community. The collectivist mindset encourages individuals to prioritize the well-being of the group over their own personal interests. This is seen in the way the family is willing to go through numerous trials and tribulations to ensure that their father's name is cleared and their family's honor is restored.Individualism in Western CultureIn contrast to collectivism, individualism is a cultural ideology that emphasizes personal rights, freedoms, and individual interests. The movie "Shaving Gua Sha" also provides insights into this Western cultural perspective. In the film, the protagonist's journey to the US involves dealing with Western cultures that prioritize individualism. For instance, his attempt to explain his father's tradition of scraping "gua sha" is seen through an individualistic lens, emphasizing personal choices and practices over collective norms and customs. The courtroom scene, where the protagonist defends his father, highlights the emphasis on personal responsibility and freedom in Western society.Furthermore, in Western societies, there is a strong emphasis on individual success and self-fulfillment. This is seen in the protagonist's determination to prove his father's innocence through his own efforts and understanding of Western legal systems. Individualism also manifests in the way Western society often views family as anindividual unit rather than an interconnected whole, with each family member prioritizing their own interests and well-being.Comparative AnalysisThe contrast between collectivism and individualism in "Shaving Gua Sha" highlights the distinct cultural values and ideologies of China and Western countries. Collectivism emphasizes community, interdependence, and collective responsibilities, while individualism focuses on personal freedoms, rights, and self-interest.This divergence in cultural values has profound implications for social norms, behavior patterns, communication styles, problem-solving mechanisms, and social hierarchies. For example, when faced with a crisis or conflict, collectivist cultures tend to prioritize collective harmony and unity over individual differences or conflicts. Conversely, individualist cultures tend to prioritize personal rights and freedoms over collective interests or norms. The movie "Shaving Gua Sha" offers an interesting perspective on these cultural differences by showcasing how a protagonist from a collectivist background navigates through an individualistic society. Such representations offer valuable insights into understanding cultural exchanges between different parts of the world. In conclusion, "Shaving Gua Sha" provides a fascinating lens through which to explore the contrast between collectivism and individualism in Chinese and Western cultures. Through a comparative analysis of this film, we gain valuable insights into understanding these different cultural ideologies and their implications for social norms, behavior patterns, communication styles, and problem-solvingmechanisms. Such insights are crucial for promoting cultural understanding and bridging cultural divides in a globalized world.Furthermore, the film serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural exchange and understanding in bridging the gap between different cultural backgrounds. By acknowledging and respecting cultural differences, we can foster a more inclusive and harmonious world where individuals from different cultural backgrounds can coexist and thrive. In conclusion, the movie "Shaving Gua Sha" offers a compelling exploration of collectivism and individualism in Chinese and Western cultures. Through its representation of these contrasting cultural ideologies, the film provides valuable insights into understanding the diverse cultural backgrounds of the East and the West. Such understanding is crucial for promoting cultural exchange and bridging cultural divides in a globalized world. Ultimately, this analysis aims to foster a deeper appreciation and respect for the rich cultural diversity that exists in our world.。

跨⽂化交际:刮痧读后感(英⽂)Review of the Movie Gua ShaI. Summary of the movieThe story happened in a immigrant family in America. Da tong and his wife Jenny immigrated into the States and had their baby--Denis there. In order to take a good care of Da tong’s father, they decided t o live with him. The resource of the story was that the grandfather had a traditional Chinese therapy to Denis. However, the American doctor thought that Denis was suffered an extremely serious violence from his parents. So they looked for the lawyer and tried to protect Denis by sending him to the children’s shelter. When in the court, no matter how many words Da Tong explained to the judge, he couldn’t believe that Denis was just received a therapy and he couldn’t understand what Da tong has explained to him about the traditional therapy. Finally, Denis’s boss also his friend, went to China to acquire the knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine. After a short time in China learning the basic of TCM, he went back to America and showed the court what he saw and learnt about TCM in China. However, what he had done did not helped Da tong won the lawsuit. Da tong divorced his wife and was punished by the court that he could not see his son and went into their house without permission. Being suffering from a tough time missing his beautiful wife and beloved son, Da tong decided to give them a surprise on the Christmas. He dressed up at as Santa, and climbed into the house and finally the family reunited again.Actually this is a typical movie talking about the cross-cultural communication. Meanwhile, it also mentioned the parental love, romantic love and friendship. All this are of great importance in our daily life. But in my opinion, the cross-cultural communication is the representative aspect that we should pay much more attention to.II. Definition of cross-cultural communication“Cross-cultural communication (also frequently referred to as intercultural communication, which is also used in a difference sense, though ) is a field of study that looks at how people from differing cultural backgrounds communicate, in similar and different ways among themselves, and how they endeavor to communicate cross-cultures.”--Wikipedia From the definition we can have a clear sense that different cultural backgrounds is the main reason leading to the difficulty in cross-cultural communication. As we can see in the film Gua Sha, because of the huge between Chinese and American culture, it’s hard for people from the 2 countries come to a consensus in almost every aspects, especially in accepting Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). After watching the movie, I had a deep thought about the cross-culture, and I wrote this paper to illustrate some cross-cultural problems existed in spreading TCM to the world, and also give some solutions on solving these problems.III. Barriers of spreading TCMIn this part, I’d like to state the barriers of spreading Traditional Chinese Medicine. From my research on the internet and according to my own experience, I think the barriers can be divided into 2 aspects: Inner barriers and External barriers.i.Inner barriersWe often feel impossible that why the foreigners cannot accept our traditional culture. TCM is amazing. The fact is, not only the foreigners but also some Chinese could not accept TCM. So, one of the barriers on the way in spreading TCM is the insufficiency of publicity of TCM and the policy of the government. Then, the scarcity of the TCM talents is another problem. Because TCM is a complicated medicine system having its own philosophy idea, it’s hard for people to fully understand with it. Next, the inconvenient of taking the TCM also lead to the barriers. What’s more, to be practical, the payment of those TCM doctors’ is on a lower level, so fewer people like to go in for it.ii.External barriersBecause the westerns already possess a complete and effective system of western medicine, therefore it’s difficult for them to accept TCM as a way of treating diseases. Another extremely serious problem is the language barriers. TCM is the splendid culture originated from China, so there’s no doubt that Chinese has highly systematic professional expressions of TCM. While in the western countries (as most oriental countries accept the theory of TCM), they do not have such an comprehensive language of TCM, thus it would not be easy for them to understand the theory.IV. SolutionsIt seems to be the most exciting news that, recently, not only Chinese but also more and more foreigners were attracted by TCM. For the whole nation, it will be an unprecedentedly superexcellent opportunity to disseminate the traditional culture and to build up increasing communication with the external world. Here are some of the solutions may be helpful:i.Accepting the TCM TheoryIf we want to spread TCM to the world, the very first thing we should do is to accept it. Only when we Chinese can accept our own traditional culture, can we spread it to the whole world.ii.Acquiring basic Traditional Chinese Medicine TheoryAfter having a positive attitude toward TCM, we must possess a basic knowledge of TCM. We need to totally trust our own medicine system but not to destroy it by abusive and unsachlich words. Try to learn some basis theory may be an effective way to successfully carry forward TCM./doc/b6cbfa02e87101f69e319596.html ing proper translationApparently, language plays a very vital role in disseminating TCM. However, it’s usually hard for the translators or interpreters to find a proper way to express the TCM terms. So it’s our duty to dig out a better way and proper methods to translate TCM into other languages.iv.Develop integrated talentsBefore English became so popular, a phenomenon in the society is that those whohave a profound knowledge of TCM cannot speak English well and on the contrary, those who speak English well know nearly nothing about TCM. Based on this, to develop talents with both skillful language and profound knowledge of TCM will be the critical task for the education.V. ConclusionAs an English major studying in a Traditional Chinese Medicine college, I gradually find my advantages compared with the merely language learners and the TCM learners. It’s also a great chance for me to acquire the knowledge of introducing TCM to the world as well. What’s more, through the learning of western cultures and customs, I can have basic ideas of the westerners’logic of thinking and ways of speaking. Therefore, it will be helpful to communicate with them and to introduce TCM to them. As we all know, TCM is the most splendid treasure of Chinese, it is absolutely our compelling obligation to make it better known by the rest of the world. Back to the movie Gua Sha, it is noticeable that making TCM accepted by nearly all the people is still a long way to go. It is our duty to spare no efforts on trying hard to reduce the barriers on the way of cross-cultural communication. In this way, we must try every means to complete ourselves, not only on trying hard to be a skillful language speaker but also an excellent cultural disseminating envoy. By doing all of these, we can make a great contribution to the career of TCM, the promotion of cross-cultural communication and the prosperity of our country. (1250 words)。

刮痧观后感文化差异英文

刮痧观后感文化差异英文

刮痧观后感文化差异英文The ancient practice of cupping therapy has been a subject of fascination and intrigue for many across the globe. As a traditional Chinese medical technique, it has gained significant attention in recent years, particularly with its widespread adoption and adaptation in various cultural contexts. The cultural differences observed in the perception and practice of cupping therapy are a testament to the dynamic interplay between traditional healing modalities and the diverse societal norms and beliefs that shape their interpretation and application. One of the most striking cultural differences in the perception of cupping therapy lies in the degree of its acceptance and integration into mainstream healthcare systems. In China, where the practice originated, cupping is deeply rooted in the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) framework and is widely recognized and utilized as a complementary treatment option, often integrated seamlessly alongside conventional Western medical practices. Practitioners of TCM are highly trained in the art of cupping, and the technique is commonly employed to address a wide range of ailments, frommusculoskeletal pain to respiratory conditions. In contrast, the acceptance and integration of cupping therapy in Western healthcare systems have been more gradual and uneven. While some countries, such as the United States, have seen a growing interest and adoption of cupping as an alternative or complementary therapy, the practice has often been met with skepticism and resistance from the mainstream medical establishment. The lack of robust scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of cupping, coupled with the unfamiliarity of the technique within the Western biomedical paradigm, has contributed to this reluctance.Another significant cultural difference lies in the visual perception and interpretation of the characteristic circular marks left on the skin after a cupping session. In Chinese culture, these marks are often viewed as a sign of the therapy's effectiveness, indicating the successful release of stagnant energy or "qi" from the body. The presence of these marks is celebrated and embraced as a testament to the healing process. However, in Western contexts, these same marks are sometimes perceived with a sense of unease or even alarm, as they may be mistaken for signs of harm or injury, rather than a natural byproduct of the cupping technique. The cultural differences in the understanding and application ofcupping therapy also extend to the rituals and practices surrounding the treatment. In traditional Chinese medicine, the cupping process is often accompanied by the burning of herbs, the use of specialized tools, and the incorporation of specific acupuncture points. These elements are integral to the holistic approach of TCM, where the mind, body, and spirit are all considered in the healing process. In contrast, Western adaptations of cupping may focus more on the physical aspects of the technique, often stripping away the cultural and spiritual components that are central to the traditional Chinese practice.Furthermore, the societal perceptions and attitudes towards pain and discomfort also play a significant role in the cultural differences observed in cupping therapy. In Chinese culture, the temporary discomfort or redness caused by cupping is often seen as a necessary and even desirable part of the healing process, as it is believed to facilitate the release of stagnant energy and promote the flow of qi. However, in Western societies, where the avoidance of pain and discomfort is often prioritized, the idea of purposefully inducing such sensations through a medical intervention may be met with resistance or hesitation. The cultural differences in the perception and practice of cupping therapy also extend to the social and interpersonal dynamics surrounding the treatment. In China, cupping is often a communalexperience, with practitioners and patients engaging in a shared ritual of healing that is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions and values of the society. The act of receiving cupping therapy may be seen as a social event, with family members or friends often participating in the process together. In contrast, the Western approach to cupping therapy tends to be more individualistic, with the treatment often taking place in a clinical setting, with a focus on the practitioner-patient relationship rather than the broader social context.Despite these cultural differences, the growing global interest in cupping therapy has led to a fascinating cross-cultural exchange and adaptation of the practice. As more people from diverse cultural backgrounds are exposed to the technique, there is an opportunity for mutual understanding, appreciation, and the blending of traditional and modern healing modalities. This process of cultural exchange and adaptation can ultimately lead to a more nuanced and holistic understanding of the role of cupping therapy in the broader landscape of healthcare and wellness. In conclusion, the cultural differences observed in the perception and practice of cupping therapy are a testament to the rich tapestry of human experience and the diverse ways in which traditional healing modalities are interpreted and applied across different societal contexts. As we continue to explore and engage with these culturaldifferences, we may find that the true value of cupping therapy lies not only in its physical benefits but also in its ability to bridge the gaps between diverse cultures and foster a greater understanding of the multifaceted nature of human health and wellbeing.。

Scraping TherapyThe film “Scraping Therapy” reflects the difference s of value and culture views between westerners and Chinese. China society is influenced by Confucianism for thousands years. Confucianism is known as paying regard to human relationship and ethic. But in Western culture, people emphasize more on individualism, independence and equality. So conflicts in culture and value are unavoidable. These conflicts have shown in the movie.Conflict 1: Individualism and collectivismIndividualism emphasizes individual goals and independence, but collectivism advocates the inseparable relationship and dependence between person and person. China is a collectivism country, but America is an individualism country. In movie, actually the grandfather did Scraping Therapy to Dennis. But in the court, Datong admitted it without hesitation. This reflects the inseparable relationship and dependence in a family. Bonds between two family members are strong. When a family member is in need, the other will give him a hand by nature and sometimes even the help is illegal or against conscience. Those sacrifices will be made to help friends as well. Now in China society, people who are in same relationship networks still benefit from each other. There is another example explaining this character of a Chinese. In the court, Quinlan witnessed that Datong beat his son. Datong was angry and accused Quinlan that he had been treated Quinlan as his friend but Quinlan betrayed him in the court. As an American, Quinlan considered what he had done was totally correct and Datong was a friend of him. Americans always make a distinction between public affairs and personal affairs. They are just about principle issues. This reflects a different individualism value of friendship. Conflict 2: Chinese’s emotion and American lawIn movie, Datong brought Dennis off the welfare horse to airport because he wanted to make his father to have one last look at grandson before leaving America. On Christmas day, Datong Climbed water pipe to meet his family at the risk of his life. Every Chinese will be moved by the kinships in Datong’sfamily. But, all these are illegal in American law. This is against Chinese’s emotion. Chinese pay more attention to the emotion everywhere even in the law. But American attaches importance to the fact especially in the law. Their law involves so many areas and some of them are against the understanding of a Chinese. In China, parents consider children as parts of their own. Sometimes, they beat and scold their children for better education. But in America, parents are just children’s guardian and they have no right to beat and scold their children especially for minors. T o protect minors, American passed a series of law.
